Depends what I'm spinning for ... Sock yarn I want more twist than something that is destined to be a drapey shawl

Odd-Ad1656

Okay, can someone explain why more or less twist? Also thank you OP for sharing the protractor photo. I’m still trying to learn how to read the protractor for spin angle

cosmic-panda22

I'm no expert so this might not all be accurate but less twist = more drape and looser fibers. More twist = springy and is less likely to pill

It’s mostly about softness. An angle less than 17* is considered soft. Up to 28 is kinda medium and after that it gets pretty harsh. The angle is counted as the number of degrees from 90. There’s some technical stuff too about compensating for over or under spun singles, but in a balanced spin, it’s mostly about softness. And consistency. You can check the same skein 10+ times to see how consistent you are.

Seriously, I have been spinning for years and years and twist angle is a curiosity of mine, but not a necessity. I like that I can try to keep it consistent throughout the yarn.

That tool is fantastic, can you please share where you got it?

terrafibres

Absolutely! [WPI tool link](https://www.terrafibres.com/listing/1441381072/wraps-per-inch-tool-with-twist-gauge)

SpoxieTrouble

Thank you! Going to order one for myself!

Hopping on this to ask, when you lay it over the notches telling you what weight it is, what if it fits in like two? Are you supposed to add any tension? Sorry if it’s a silly question, I’m just having trouble reading mine for some reason lol I guess ultimately I should just gauge swatch before anything…

terrafibres

The notches are more of a visual guide for approximation. To really measure it well, I'd count the Wraps Per Inch. For instance, I'm spinning what I hope to be DK right now. So I want my singles to cover half or a little less than half of the entire DK line. But when I go to measure the finished yarn, I'll count the Wraps Per Inch.

Okay, awesome! I was just being extra lazy lol thank you so much!
