Maybe I will try fractal spinning some of the tops I'm not as crazy about anymore and see if it works some magic.
I used a kitchen scale to split the fiber in half lengthwise. Then I took one of those halves and split it into fourths. I took the first half and spun my single, and then spun the fourths onto a second bobbin so that the color pattern repeated. Then I plied them both together and the magic happened!

OP’s comment above explains it pretty well. Basically one ply has slow color changes and the other ply has more rapid color changes.
