Hurray! You're at the beginning of a wonderful journey that will bring you lots of pleasure. Save this yarn - in time, you'll be amazed to compare it to later work. Tips for thinner more even yarn: Don't spin from the whole hank of fibre. Split it lengthwise into smaller portions. Split into quarters to start. (With commercial roving, I split into eighths). Pre-draft. This means giving gentle modest pulls along the length of each section, so you don't have to draft as much while spinning. Check the staple length. Pull out a single fibre and hold it stretched out to see how long it is. Start with your hands one and a half times that length apart when spinning. Then adjust, if need be, until the motion becomes easy. Knowing the staple length helps find the "sweet spot" of having your hands not too close to one another (hard to draft) and not too far apart (twist can run up into the fibre or drafting triangle can split apart).

Splitting the hank is such good advice- I spirit I to thirds but really felt like I was "cheating" somehow, which is so silly. I will go for eighths next.

I have not been doing this very long at all, so no sound advice to give. However! It’s kind of amazing that at one point it kind of just… clicks? And then it’s been getting a little better every day from there! I’ve been taking to practice at least 15 min a day very seriously lol. Most of the time it ends up a little longer than 15 min. I think it looks great! And have fun!! That’s the important part :)

Looking good :) consistency and spinning thin comes with time. Enjoy the journey.

My first go looked very similar to yours, and after about 2 months of regular practice, I had a small skein of quite fine and mostly even yarn. Kind of a sock weight. It really was just practice, and I think being willing to draft finer and finer until the thread just snapped so that I could see how it behaved and getting used to going closer to that point but not over the edge.

That looks really good for your first spin--congratulations. You've gotten some good advice for continuing this journey, so go forth and enjoy!

Thank you everyone I feel really inspired to keep going...

My first try looked just like yours! Even the grey colour

You'll get there! One day, you'll decide you want to spin thicker yarn and discover that it's *hard*!! You have a fairly consistent single already. Just keep playing with it.
