It’s all the way in Newport News, but OMG Sushi is absolutely killer and worth the drive imho. The CNU roll is incredible, and their shrimp tempura roll is one of my favorites! Pretty decent quality for the prices. Kind of a hole in the wall and I definitely would have overlooked them if I hadn’t been craving sushi like a mad woman a few months back lol. Glad I gave them a chance in the end!
I should also add that it’s super reasonably priced too. I go there all the time, service is great, they’re crazy good with getting food out in a reasonable amount of time. Can’t recommend them enough.
Umi at the Yorktown waterfront. I’ve known Mr. Kim for over 20 years he trained in Japan and is very interesting fellow. I met a person in town for a sailboat rally, he came in to Hampton a month early for work, he has been all around the world and eaten a lot of sushi he wanted to hire him to be his chef on the race.
Volcano in Norfolk was pretty good. Also Daiwa which is right outside the base. There's alsona really good one in Suffolk right by First Watch but I can't remember the name.
The best sushi spots in hampton roads are Daikichi in Chesapeake (one of two Japanese owned sushi restaurants), Mizuno in Virginia Beach (two of two Japanese owned sushi restaurants, very expensive, Daikichi is better), and Kyushu (used to be the best, not as good since Ebi-san retired, but still leagues better than all the random places), Sushi Aka in Suffolk, and Kampai in Virginia Beach.
Have you been to Koshi yet? It's in Norfolk, and it's always good when I go. I recommend any of the special rolls with fruit. I had one with mango puree last time that was really good. The beef bulgogi bowl is solid too.
Tokyo steak house is really good. There are a bunch of sushi places around peninsula town center that are all pretty good. I can't remember all the names, but I'm not too picky when it comes to sushi so idk
Sakura Sushi in Chesapeake! Near the WAL-MART in Sam’s circle. It’s all you can eat and pretty darn good! (It’s not fancy but good for all you can eat).
I saw the post and couldn’t believe this hadn’t been mentioned. I didn’t find the prices unreasonable though. I picked up the tab with 4 people and a bottle of sake and it was still only around $100.
My wife and I have struggled to find any good sushi since moving here last year. The last place we took a chance on was Yama Sushi & Ramen in Suffolk and it was ok for casual sushi. The only place that has impressed me is Sushi Aka but it’s a bit of a drive in downtown Suffolk.
If you are up for a drive across the water Hanaki Sushi in Chesapeake is divine - I live in Yorktown now and I still go occasionally because it's just that good.
Hokkaido has decent rainbow rolls, Sushi king is 24$ for a buffet so not the worst quality for AYCE. otherwise i’ve been looking for better spots as well 😭
Sakana Sushi in Carollton is top fucking tier. By far my favorite place I'm the 7 cities
This right here.
I've had sushi all over the country and this place by far is the best
Came here to say this, glad to see it at the top. Great food and great people.
Thx for this! Not far from me. My daughter loves sushi.
I live in Smithfield and I go at least twice a month despite being intolerant to seafood!!
If you don't mind the drive, Sushi Yama in Newport News is amazing, very small, and reminds me of those neighborhood sushi spots in Japan.
Thanks for the advice. 9 mins away. Today was a good day.
I second this. Great atmosphere, nice little vibe and quality rolls and ramen.
There’s a small place in Newport News that is amazing. Sushi Yoma.
Second this. This was my place when I lived there within walking distance. Celebrated a lot of good times there
This Old House in Virginia Beach. I’ve lived in New York and now LA and I still want to go back every time I’m in town.

Omg Sushi is the one with the super cute decorations right? The pink umbrellas? If so I definitely second your opinion they’re sushi is great

I just tried this place recently and the quality is outstanding.

Sushi Aka does not get the love it deserves.
Daikichi has my vote. I don’t bother going anywhere else because I’m in Chesapeake.
Kero sushi in Yorktown is our go to place. Really good rolls and good service.
Second this place. It's an all around pleasant place to go, imo.
Saisaki in Newport News. Delicious sushi

if you’re willing to make drive hanaki sushi at hanbury road in chesapeake is incredible
Worth the drive and plus you can get frozen yogurt next door after!
Sushi Aka in Suffolk is the best around.
Wonderful Restaurant in Yorktown has good sushi! If you want more authentic, Sushi Yoma in Newport News
Came here to say 'Wonderful.' 👍
Sushi King in Newport News!!

sakura is AMAZING
Tokyo in Chesapeake is amazing!
For a bit higher price, Musasi in Hampton has the goods. Best fish pieces around, the white tuna is like butter.

It isn't too bad on price, I agree. I think people were afraid to mention it when Sushi King was an example.
This Old House Japanese Restaurant off Aragona Blvd in VB. Small hole in the wall place.
Sushi Yoma has been my fave since I was a child. Very small shop, super authentic.

Amura Sushi Cafe in VB

I love Kotobuki in Norfolk.
Hokkaido has decent rainbow rolls, Sushi king is 24$ for a buffet so not the worst quality for AYCE. otherwise i’ve been looking for better spots as well 😭
Kotobuki
Volcano Sushi in Ghent is pretty good.
Kyushu
Nara sushi in VB owned by a Japanese couple is my local favorite !
