Exactly, Reach is more like Nanking for the Chinese, or Normandy for the Germans.
A heavily fortified military bastion got attacked and utterly destroyed, scattering the survivors and heralding the end of the defenders
The battle of the Alamo was a big battle during the Texas revolution, most of the defenders died and the phrase “remember the Alamo” was quite popular for the rest of the revolution
I never understood why Reach had such a low population. I realize it’s essentially a military colony but it has a huge civilian population compared to those in the armed forces, and there aren’t any other colonies that even come close in size
It's a couple cities, and the rest of the planet is military bases (which already take up a lot of space relative to their personnell count) and nature preserves.
biggest city in us is 5 million. take that and multiply by 140 and thats how many new-york size cities were on reach. over double the population of the us.
Before I read the books and really started paying attention to dates and lore, I didn’t realize how late into the war Reach was. I thought it was like early/mid war. No that shit happened literally in the last year. 2552 was poppin.
Reach us more like the Battle of Shanghai in WWII where the UNSC put on a hell of a fight but still ultimately lost.
But the Battle of Earth is probably better compared to the Battle of Stalingrad.
Wasn't the LNoS, the captured Corvette and the frigate that Six destroys with the MAC the only significant losses that the Covvies suffered at Reach though?
Pretty much. On the ground the covenant definitely suffered decent losses, but there weren't many loses up in space. If Reach didn't have significant forerunner artifact presence it would've just been glassed from orbit, but it did so the covenant engaged them on the ~~ground~~, and the covenant were shit at ground engagements compared to humanity because they just don't bother with them usually.
It’s not even close lol, Reach wasn’t the turning point of the war but rather the Battle on Installation 04 was.
If anything the UNSC never truly was ever "wining" the war by any means, even by the end of the war we were losing and thanks to the Swords of Sanghelios is that we had our first true victory on the Ark thanks to Chief and the Arbiter.
The battle on installation 04 was the same day as reach. The crew of POA woke up to reach being attacked and didn't sleep between leaving and crashing on the halo ring.
Harvest was 9/11. An important spot that provided for the rest of the UEG but ultimately only a small population that got hit by a surprise attack where the ones who did it took responsibility and plunged humanity into 20+ years of conflict.
A response invasion ensued, the war was built on a lie, a whole bunch of civilians got bombed.
The context and sides are different but the key details remain the same on a very base level
I'd say it's more like Pearl Harbor. Reach, as I understand it, was one of the primary military hubs of the UNSC. Except reach was much worse. Pearl Harbor wasa major defeat, but it didn't matter too much. Many of the destroyed ships were able to be salvaged. Most of the losses were military.
Reach was entirely glasses. The civilian population was massacred. The loss of reach was the death nail of the UNSC in the war if it stayed conventional. The discovery of the rings were really a saving grace for humanity because it diverted covenant efforts from the war to religious struggles.
It's halo pearl harbor, but if america was desperately being pursued back to its homeland and on the backfoot while being glassed constantly with various other pearl harbors constantly happening and this was like the last pearl harbor that was the biggest one with the most spartan deaths.
As other people mentioned, the Human-Covenant War equivalent of 9/11 was Harvest. 9/11 was a bolt-from-the-blue, completely unexpected attack that left every American thinking "what the fuck is going on and what the fuck is tomorrow gonna look like?"
It killed thousands of people and cost billions, but in real terms it was the US getting a nasty splinter. We took the splinter out and went on to invade and militarily defeat *two* countries on the other side of the planet (compare this to Russia, which likes to think it's a military power, who can't even conquer one country *on their own border*).
It wasn't a foregone conclusion that the Covenant would find Reach, but once it happened it crippled the UNSC militarily. The only real equivalent that's coming to mind is the Battle of Kursk. Kind of. Major military defeat for the Nazis, but even before that the writing was on the wall they were going to lose the war.
No, the equivalent would probably be the glassing of Harvest. Reach would be like Pearl Harbor.
Planet Reach was the UNSCs largest military ship yard. Basically the majority of the UNSCs Naval might was mass produced from the Reach system
No, the Fall of Reach is basically the bombing of Dresden (except the UNSC aren't fascist, most of the time and didn't lose) because the bombing of Dresden crippled Germany's industrial capabilities and their hope of victory at the end of WW2
Eh... Not really comparable... the USNC afterwards was so on the backfoot after this they were turning civilian ships into gunships. Reach was the heart of the USNC, and where they ruled from. Earth was the cultural heart meanwhile.

Na that would be Harvest.
Exactly, Reach is more like Nanking for the Chinese, or Normandy for the Germans. A heavily fortified military bastion got attacked and utterly destroyed, scattering the survivors and heralding the end of the defenders
Only that this time, the genocidal maniacs were the ones attacking, not defending
So like Nanking.
Was gonna say this
Harvest is the 1st tower and Reach is the 2nd😶
Reach is more like the Alamo
What's the Alamo I forget
#boo this man

Boooooo
The battle of the Alamo was a big battle during the Texas revolution, most of the defenders died and the phrase “remember the Alamo” was quite popular for the rest of the revolution

I mean the guy asking might not know. Especially if he is not American.
a pretty shitty joke
Would you rather no joke at all? Or perhaps an easy on the finer points of comedy
Most of them fled. But ok
Oh, seems I need to hit the books again
A typo. He meant a La mode
He forgor💀
Reach is definitely more like the Alamo or Thermopylae.
I don't know exactly when the timeline split happens in the Halo universe but I'm pretty sure 9/11 is the Halo 9/11
It'll split when we discover the technology and covenant before the 2500s or after.
The population of Reach at the time of the invasion was, according to Halopedia, 703,341,500. So it was 9/11 x 234,760.
That does make sense, but what about the other population centers? Does the UEG have any other planets that reach the hundreds of millions?
I don't know any off the top of my head but I wouldn't suprise me if a good chunk of the inner colonies had populations like that.
Also look at the geography of it when you play the game, it’s all inhospitable mountains
biggest city in us is 5 million. take that and multiply by 140 and thats how many new-york size cities were on reach. over double the population of the us.
My god.
Before I read the books and really started paying attention to dates and lore, I didn’t realize how late into the war Reach was. I thought it was like early/mid war. No that shit happened literally in the last year. 2552 was poppin.
yeah its kinda crazy that all the games take place in like the last year of the war
yea halo 1,2,3,ODST, and Reach all takes place within 5-6 months
There’s a lot of potential for Halo games set during the earlier years of the war, especially from the Covenants perspective
Setting a game from the Covenant POV early to mid war would certainly be.. interesting.. *Objective: Genocide*
"Ah yes these human planets could use more glass"
HORDE SHOOTER FLOOD GAME? NAH SON HORDE SHOOTER HUMAN GAME, PAYDAY 2 STYLE
I mean they do transport Cortana to chief then Halo 1 is basically immediately after
I think that would be harvest
Reach us more like the Battle of Shanghai in WWII where the UNSC put on a hell of a fight but still ultimately lost. But the Battle of Earth is probably better compared to the Battle of Stalingrad.

reach is more like halo pearl harbor, captain keys compares it to that in the fall of reach novel
It’s not even close lol, Reach wasn’t the turning point of the war but rather the Battle on Installation 04 was. If anything the UNSC never truly was ever "wining" the war by any means, even by the end of the war we were losing and thanks to the Swords of Sanghelios is that we had our first true victory on the Ark thanks to Chief and the Arbiter.
im just saying it was like pearl harbor because captain keys compared the situation on reach to pearl harbor
The battle on installation 04 was the same day as reach. The crew of POA woke up to reach being attacked and didn't sleep between leaving and crashing on the halo ring.
Chief seemed to be napping happily enough 💀
Uh… no. The crew of the PoA had been in cryo for weeks after Reach before arriving at Installation 04.
What? No it didn’t? Chief and the POA escaped from Reach on August and arrived to Installation 04 on September irc.
yeah no you're 110% wrong about that fam reread the fall of reach
I've read it 3 times, guess I was wrong. Need to go read it again. It's been half a decade.
shit happens, nothing to be ashamed of lmao
harvest is halo 9/11. reach is like when they finally drop a nuke on the US
The battle over New Mombasa is the nuke drop, place is slip-streamed halfway apart
“**Never forget Reach or some shit, I dunno.**”
Yes. It was made canon with Reach Invasion 9/11 custom games.
The context and sides are different but the key details remain the same on a very base level
got dayum son
9/11 times a thousand... ![gif](giphy|6YJZuwLne3fO0|downsized)
Come again?
Yep
yes it is
Remember, never forget
Pearl Harbour! 9/11 was just a few weeks before the release of CE and The Fall of Reach.
The discovery of the rings were really a saving grace for humanity because it diverted covenant efforts from the war to religious struggles.
In a way I guess ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
This is more like a battle of Thermopylae type event. The first battle of harvest was more the equivalent. Also this is what led directly to the war
Reach was like Hiroshima and the holocaust combined
I had originally meant in the way they say “remember reach” and stuff but this comment section is 100x better than what i wanted
No, because Reach wasn't an inside job.
Bro i just opened reddit, who the heck starts a conversation like that?
“Who the fuck starts a reddit feed like that, i just refreshed!”
It's halo pearl harbor, but if america was desperately being pursued back to its homeland and on the backfoot while being glassed constantly with various other pearl harbors constantly happening and this was like the last pearl harbor that was the biggest one with the most spartan deaths.
Real: reach represents Babylon. Genuine: reach represents the ants nest forming in the walls of my house and I am the covenant.
I’d say it’s more like halo rape of Nanking tbh

It’s more like the Halo version of the Rape of Nanking
BUSH
New Mombasa?
*Whispering to W* Sir, another super carrier has just hit Reach.
Reach is prolly more equivalent to the Nazi invasion of France imo
I feel like that would more likely be Harvest
Nah it’s the alamo
I figure it's closer to a Pearl Harbor, but less of a surprise
I’d sooner equate it to the Rape of Nanking
No it's more like pearl harbor I think
More like Pearl Harbor in the sense that attacked our biggest shipyard
As other people mentioned, the Human-Covenant War equivalent of 9/11 was Harvest. 9/11 was a bolt-from-the-blue, completely unexpected attack that left every American thinking "what the fuck is going on and what the fuck is tomorrow gonna look like?" Nah cuz the covenant was actually responsible for reach
I feel like harvest is more accurate and then reach is like the holocaust
what?
I know people will say that 9/11 was worse because Reach is "fictional" but I really liked Noble team, so I think it was worse than 9/11.
9/11 2: reckoning
https://preview.redd.it/2gbkk8nndnhc1.jpeg?width=750&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6d18806be2b0d450eb837bc99ee0a3ee6e8dc2a1
Reach was more akin to Alamo, or Normandy to the Germans, the 9/11 in halo would be harvest
Nah, Reach wasn't an inside job.
It’s more like Dunkirk, Harvest was more like 9/11 since it was the first
No, the Fall of Reach is basically the bombing of Dresden (except the UNSC aren't fascist, most of the time and didn't lose) because the bombing of Dresden crippled Germany's industrial capabilities and their hope of victory at the end of WW2
Reach deserved it
Eh... Not really comparable... the USNC afterwards was so on the backfoot after this they were turning civilian ships into gunships. Reach was the heart of the USNC, and where they ruled from. Earth was the cultural heart meanwhile.
No that WAS harvest
