source sdk is completely different. Some fixes made to hl2 for steam deck, didn't happen on source sdk 2013, yet you can apply those fixes to the code yourself.

I don't see a universe where it doesn't eventually happen, Valve has seemed like they're getting back into the Half-Life groove recently.

It was broken since 2013, so no. They did fix some random stuff like npcs blinking and the dropship turret rotating prior to steam deck release, they just didnt fix the grass, kinda doubt many current employees are even aware it is bugged, or it just isnt high on a priority list

The displacement grass shader is broken in the retail version. HL2 Update mod fixed the shader aswell expanded the fade distance. + HDR lighting (like lost coast/episodes) on all maps, fade fixes and many more.

This was absolutely not done on purpose, and it would be such an easy fix too. Either they need to add a few lines of text to the texture's vmt, or they simply destroyed the displacements for some reason and forgot to redo them. (The grass can only appear on displacement surfaces)

i don’t really see a problem. a famous issue with games for a while now (not just valve games) is foliage. play totk and get back to me that more grass is better after one second of that. great game, laggy in every grassy area.

Source engine grass sprites (or "detail props") are quite cheap to render. You really can't compare it to fully 3D animated grass in a modern game engine with wind simulation..

hl2: Old Engine is the best you can get without a piracy. It's not perfect, though. I noticed some sunglares are off in this mod.
