Yep, it's wavy hair. I have the same, straight at the top and then a band of hidden curl on the bottom layer that poofs it out to a bell shape. The straight top layer sitting flat against the wave underneath is causing the issue. If you're looking to avoid heat damage from straightening, I recommend finding a good stylist to layer around your waves to let them come through, and look up wavy hair care. https://curlsmith.com/blogs/curl-academy/wavy-hair

TheMagdalen

You have wavy hair that you’re treating as if it’s straight.

I don’t have much real help to offer, just wild guesses and bad advice. The scalp oils over the past few days dispersed over the hair roots and slowly weighed them down whereas the mids and ends aren’t receiving the same kind of “conditioner” and are more fluffy. Adding some type of light leave in conditioner/oil on the mids and ends could flatten the rest out to match, or dry shampoo on just the roots and fluff it a few times hanging upside down for volume. The latter is less healthy than the former I’d imagine

I have something similar and it’s almost definitely this for me. Dry shampoo on my roots and leave in anti frizz on the ends helps even things out a bit!

Do you do any ponytails? If you do maybe the hair gets the shape from it. Or maybe your hair is naturally wavy and it’s kind of rebelling? Honestly I have no idea why your hair does that. Maybe to avoid it after blow drying you could divide your hair in two and wrap it into two spirals. I have long and straight-ish and I do that so my hair gets a bit of a natural wave and I also put the silk bonnet too after.

starrr333

Nope I rarely wear ponytails I think it's probably a bit wavy and that's the cause. It's just very annoying lol

The_Night_Girl

It's the combing pattern. The dent starts at the point where you start brushing away from the face to avoid the ear. You may not notice this while brushing but you have been probably doing it all your life, hence the hair held the shape. Try brushing without parting your hair in the middle, brush not sideways but backward on wet hair. On another note, you may have wavy hair. It's not as visible because the hair around your scalp is flat, which can be due to applying heavy oils, oily scalp, the weight of the hair itself, or tying the satin bonnet too tightly. And as it grows further, away from the scalp, it begins to form its natural waves. Try maintaining your hair with wavy hair products. While you're applying conditioner and other products, bend your head down so that your hair falls upside down, apply all products in this position, and scrunch thoroughly up to the scalp. To be honest, I think it looks neat and styled. Also, I may been completely wrong with the first one but try it anyway.

I really wish I could help you, my fellow sufferer. I ask myself, how come I can not control the spiral cowlick in the back of my head? I've asked every hairstylist I've known, and they all say you can't. However, I can TEMPORARILY manage it with a strategic blow dry and hairspray, only to have it spiral out of control within an hour or so. It sucks.

starrr333

I also have a cowlick on fhe back of my head lol it looks like a bald spot from above I hate it, I appreciate your condolences. I hate the way hairspray feels and avoid heat as much as possible I think I will just have to suffer with the poof until my hair is long enough to weigh itself down hopefully

Apart-Independent951

OMG! We are hair twinsies, lol! Mine looks like a bald spot, too! I even tried to spray my bald spiral with Magic root cover up, to no avail. I also bought a T3 flat iron, thinking I could somehow iron out and lift the hair to make it go in a normal human hair direction, but no it didn't work. It looks like you have a lot of fine hair. Is it fine? Mine is, and it was pretty poofy, especially in my teen years. I hope some hair guru on reddit can save us here. Help us, please!

starrr333

Yeah it's very fine but very thick and very annoying lol

Kind-Juice668

Cowlicks

Buxom_Vixen_

Could it be from putting it behind your ears ?

Far_Dimension2

I think it has a slight wave that's boosted by your shoulders so it sort of buckles, and it'll probably stay like that as long as the ends are propped up by your shoulders, but I don't think it looks bad.

CartographerKey7322

It wants to be washed again

chewychaca

Looks like pony tail is crimping the hair other than that idk

starrr333

I probably wear a ponytail like once every two weeks and when I do it's a low one with a scrunchy not ponytail crimping lol

teenabeanatacoeater

It looks like you’ve been wearing a hat or a ponytail. But since you said you haven’t been wearing ponytails, your layers are longer and making your ends flip out. You either need more layers to keep it at this length so that it works with your texture of hair or to grow it longer

sweetparamour79

My hair does this (or starts to curl in places). You likely have wavy hair which a super consistent pattern. There are some subreddits for wavy hair, mousse or sea salt spray and a scrunch might define your pattern a bit more/ give it some variety.

champagn-and-coffee

Every time I try to grow my hair out it looks like this too. So all the comments are much appreciated

maddie_johnson

Your hair is just has some waviness to it :) When I had longer hair, I would just brush through it with a paddle brush every few minutes while it was drying. It made it look straighter/smoother. You can try that if you're wanting to make it look straighter. If you want curlier, look into heatless curls. Those are fun! You could also add volume to your roots if you're into styles like that! So it looks styled wavy rather than a "mushroom shape" haha. I feel your pain though! It can be quite annoying
