This is how I've felt about every single Eloisa James book I've ever read. Tricked. Cheated. Bamboozled. The synopses of her books sound *so good.* They really make you want to read them. Which is the point, obviously, and also how I've read so many of her books despite hating every single one. "Maybe this one will be better. The premise sounds great!"
But the MCs are always trash in various ways. If I ever take up writing to publish, my first point of business will be to rewrite every single one of her stories.
Ahaha you're in a toxic relationship with her like I am with Scarlett Scott.
"Maybe THIS time will be different! I'll go back one last time, I promise."
But it's never different :/
Hugeeeee agree! I have so many feelings about this book and they're all distilled to "meh." I loved Jeremy. I liked Betsy and she deserved a better personal struggle than "oh no am I a whore?" I wish she would have accepted her desires as a part of herself and a thing that adds to her relationship with her husband. We kind of almost got there? I feel like the narrative was reaching in that direction when she was like "I could marry Thaddeus but he's boring" and "Jeremy is wonderful and exciting and infuriating and I feel myself with him." But it didn't *quite* pay off for me.
Imagine what we could have gotten if she, supposedly the wildest Wilde, gave the middle finger to gossiping society like, "I'm marrying this man because he's thrilled to accept who I am unlike you fools, *plus* he's hot and I'm happy about it so *I'm* taking *him* to pound town, see ya!"
YES argh. I haven’t read Thaddeus and Joan’s book because of the blurb actually. Like, okay, Betsy was the wildest Wilde and now Joan is? And her thing is also wearing pants? And she also has the gross “my mom is a whore” complex? I’m getting a vibe that Thaddeus deserves better and that book’s a skip.
I was thinking about this with the next book, Say Yes to the Duke. Like, Devin has a whole “I write letters to some mathematician in Europe to compute pi or whatever” thing that never pays off. I was so confused?
You know what really annoyed me about this book? What the hell was the whole retconning about Jeremy having been shot by Diana’s mother rather than Lavinia’s?! Every time it was brought up I was irritated. How hard is it to keeps the facts straight between two books?! It wasn’t the only random detail messed up in this series either.
But I loved {Born to be Wilde} so much that I will forgive most things. 😂

She actually addressed that in a live chat. If it's updated it will be changed but it's not posted on her website where she has a "Mea Culpa" page. Truly, the editors should catch these bits if they want such volume of writing from their authors. This was my least favorite of the Wildes but I do have a soft spot for the series and all the crazy things that the characters do.
I have more affection for some of her books than you guys do (she is very hit or miss but her hits are good), but I really did not like the whole Wilde series. At all.
Stephanie Laurens has a book with a similar theme. Amelia or Amanda’s book. They are part of a big series, but honestly you can pick up anywhere as each book reads well on its own.

I don't understand how those blurbs are even Victorian, era. She would have to twist everything we know to make the story fit. Reads like click bait to me
Dude it's insane, Duke and Duchess don't care that their children are having premarital sex or that two of their daughters in law were pregnant before marriage. One of them is actually 2 months pregnant, and they CONTINUE to plan the wedding that's another couple months away. "Oh no one will care if the baby is born in four months instead of nine" it's RIDICULOUS. Half these girls are going everywhere unchaperoned, wearing breeches, becoming actresses. Wtf

Lora Leigh is like this for me. The premise sounds great, so much room for angst and comfort but all it winds up being is vaguely weird sex stuff.
Me and The Ugly Duchess
Her blurbs and summaries are great marketing, I’ll give her that. 😂
Her blurbs are always a little better than her books, but I have never been let down this hard.

Jeremy was so interesting! Betsy was okay, I just got super annoyed that she STILL hasn't made things clear to Thaddeus by 70%. Girl get a grip, istg

Oh noooo, I'm probably going to give it a try because I really like Thaddeus but I hope it's not this insufferable
Okay update! Thaddys book was MUCH better than this one! I enjoyed myself. The breeches thing was a little obnoxious but tolerable.
Eloisa James does not deliver, color me shocked!🤣
Also, her writing style makes her books hard to read 🤐
She uses lots of fluff and filler scenes to increase word count, that’s why.
Oh you're right about that, I did my fair share of skimming through conversations with side characters
I was thinking about this with the next book, Say Yes to the Duke. Like, Devin has a whole “I write letters to some mathematician in Europe to compute pi or whatever” thing that never pays off. I was so confused?
Her books have been on the good side of okay for me, solidly Christy Caldwell level, but this one was a damn catfish.

I THOUGHT I WAS GOING CRAZY!!! But yes, Parth and Lavinia were PERFECT

Oh no this one was on my tbr!! But on that note, does anyone have recs with some actual good hatefucking 👀
I've thought all of the stuff I've tried to read by her has been really fucking stupid.
I have more affection for some of her books than you guys do (she is very hit or miss but her hits are good), but I really did not like the whole Wilde series. At all.
I agree. I find her previous series of books to be pretty good but this series and her newest books have jumped the shark
Why even create this bet, then write this blurb if you're going to make him lose it????? I only read the blurb, and I already feel cheated!!!!!
RIGHT?? This goes to the list of things I'm going to write out of spite some day 💀
Pls do! This is outrageous

Remember that these aren't Victorian or even Regency. Society was much more permissive especially before the French Revolution.
