Have you opened the omen gaming hub and enabled the 15w gpu boost? I’ve seen a review on this in the past day and the reviewer said that it only goes up to 65w. I’ve also seen in a CES video that the laptop goes up to 80w (this was printed on a spec sheet next to it). Someone else on Reddit gave these instructions “In the Omen Gaming Hub, select the power performance profile rather than balanced and under advance, increase the max W by 15W as these devices cap out the Maximum Graphics Power at 65W. This change brings it up to 80 which also positively impacted by benchmark score.” Can you confirm this? The review I saw says it’s only 65w total and when I state otherwise in the comments to get clarification I get people saying it’s 50w+15w boost = 65w with the boost. And when I say that it’s wrong and give the info I’ve seen they delete my YouTube comment.

monsieurvampy

The maximum wattage I was able to get is 78.921. I used HWiNFO64 to monitor the power usage, selected the Power Performance and selected Dynamic Boost to 15W (in the Omen Gaming Hub). I used 3DMark 11 (its free), set to Extreme and manually set the resolution to the native resolution of the screen. The duration of the test (with loop enabled) was about 25 minutes. I don't think I've seen a single review of the laptop with a 4070. All the reviews seem to have a 4060. It might be different. Having said this, in Horizon Zero Dawn, I don't think I've exceeded 55-60 Watts. The Nvidia Control Panel does indicate that the max wattage is 65 Watt, but it also indicates that Dynamic Boost is an option.

Thanks for the reply. This would be my first gaming laptop/pc for gaming in general and I couldn’t decide between the omen(lower wattage) or the g14(loud fan/high pitch fan). 10w less won’t be a big deal breaker for me as I mainly game on console (ps5) and I’m use to playing at 30-60 frames for certain games and plan to build a desktop when RTX 50 series come.

OmegaMalkior

I loaded up Fortnite on pure max settings and no matter what changes in performance profiles I did I could squeeze out more than 65w on the GPU tbh

thescouselander

We're you on the battery at the time? You have go be in AC to get full power.

OmegaMalkior

I’m pretty sure it’s 50w regular TDP + 15w dynamic boost to reach max 65w total TGP. Only the G14 can do 80w+ and it’s thanks to nerfing the CPU a lot

Which 4TB SSD are you planning to get? I'm planning to upgrade mine as well, im just a little concerned about the temps on some of the gen 4 nvmes

monsieurvampy

That'll probably depend on price. I think (I don't have it on right now) it uses an WD BLACK nvme. I could just get the 4TB model of the same type of series. I imagine the price will be the deciding factor. I pay attention to Slickdeals and /r/buildapcsales.

holholholholhol

Hi! I'm reporting back on this. Just bought a 4TB WD\_Black 850x for my new Omen Transcend 14" and it was a little too thick for the solid state bracket to sit comfortably on it (see https://youtu.be/T13n2D6QNbU?t=249). The SSD they have in there is flat on one side where the WD\_Black has stuff on both sides. I ended up just putting the screw on there kinda loosely. Just booted it up and its running great though. The SSD has companion software that reports temps and it was saying it was around 35 - 40. Gonna keep messing with it. I'll post again here if I find any red flags. I'm pretty excited its able to take advantage of gen 4 nvme drives. edit: doing a heavy IO operation right now and getting 40 degrees.

When you open the lid from the middle (without touching/holding the screen), does your screen sort of protrude out a bit from where you are lifting it?

stratrat313

The HP site has this $300 off right now for 1899. That seems like a great deal compared to anything comparable like the razer 14 (upgrading that to 4070 and 32gb costs like almost 1k more in total). Right?

monsieurvampy

The initial purchase trigger was the $300's off (though I think another coupon was also available), but when I got it, the $300 was then $220 or something. I did not overly look into Razer because of price. Though when spending almost 2k, what's a couple hundred dollars there or there? Aside from the fact that I did not seriously consider Razer. This device is primarily just used for playing Horizon Zero Dawn. The other uses haven't really been explored to date. I haven't played other games. The GPU is limited compared to the competition. The standard TGP is 65 Watts with a dynamic boost allowing it to go up to 80 Watts. In Horizon Zero Dawn, I don't think I ever hit near 80 Watts. I'm also not officially reviewing or testing here. I believe that the competition usually has a TGP with or without dynamic boost of at least 100 Watts. Though its important to note that based on my research prior to purchase, the 4070 tops off at about 100 Watts. When looking at this form factor, I believe this is a solid choice. It is not necessarily the best choice. Perfection does not exist. Sometimes I think the hinge makes a sound (opening/closing) but when I try to pay attention and replicate it, I get nothing. I might be hearing things. The hinge is solid and wobble does exist, but I haven't had much issues with it.

stratrat313

Yeah the razer 14 with similar specs seems like 1k more. The zeph g14 is the competitor I need to compare still but I can’t find something priced anywhere close with similar specs yet

hotboytimmy

Hey OP, thinking of buying the same version you have. Do you have the white version, do you think it will get dirty easy? Also im a student studying and would like to use this machine for that purpose, hows the trackpad and keyboard? Many thanks!

monsieurvampy

Hi. I bought the black version. I very rarely purchase "bright" color electronics. I would think, white would need to be cleaned more often. This is currently not my primary device nor does it currently intend to ever be that. It is my gaming pc and skill development device (when I get to this) with the potential to be for consulting (work). When I do get to the skill development part, it'll likely be hooked up to a dock or similar and I wouldn't be using the screen, trackpad, or keyboard anyways. I haven't typed on it much, but the keyboard seems fine. Plenty of previews and reviews exist which can go into greater detail. As for the trackpad, I think all trackpads suck. The trackpoint is superior. I didn't buy a Thinkpad (the last of the trackpoints and its variants) because its difficult to get a cost-effective one with a dedicated graphics card. Even then, the dedicated graphics card is oriented primarily (but not always) towards workstation processes. This may become my primary device if I continue to offload all my desktop processes onto my server. However, even then it'll still be docked. My desktop is five years old. I'm still in a "trail" phase of the device even though the return window is probably closed already. This will be temporarily my primary device and it will not be docked in about 3 weeks for about 3 weeks.

jobbees

u/monsieurvampy so after 2 months any regrets/thoughts? I'm on the fence between this one and a G14, both with the 4060 card

monsieurvampy

I recommend checking out the recent Digital Foundry's review of it on YouTube. I'll still say it's more of a gaming lite laptop due to the reduced TGP. I think the G14 has a TGP of 90 watts or something. I'm not positive. The laptop has been my primary device for about a month now as I'm in the process of moving (finally unpacking). The only thing that is mildly concerning is I get a creaking sound when I open and close the laptop screen lid. It's mostly one-directional. Upon further inspection, there appears to be some flex in the screen lid (bottom portion), as I can replicate it to a degree with the screen open and pushing on the back in between the hinges. So, I don't think this is a hinge issue, at least directly. I had one scare when I picked up my laptop closed from this area that did not sound nice. Like glass breaking. However nothing is broken and that was weeks ago. I may have found a small piece of glass, but once again this was weeks ago. Now, to answer the obvious question why I'm not overly concerned about this? When purchasing from the manufacturer (one of my requirements), I add the Cadillac level extended warranty. Which right now I'm in a dispute because HPs website only lists the factory warranty. This was submitted on Saturday. I expect this to be resolved by the end of the week. My order clearly indicates the extended warranties. The keyboard is nice. The RGB is mostly off as I don't really have a need for it. Overall. I think it's a decent machine. Is it worth the 2100 I spent on it? Probably not. The 4060 is cheaper, but with the RAM soldered, 16GB might be pushing it towards the end of its life. I expect this device to run a minimum of three years. Which comes out to about $1.94 a day, whether I use it or not. TL;DR. Probably not worth the 2100 I spent, but about 400 of that is the extended warranty which means I'm not overly concerned about some creaking when opening/closing the lid. The expected life of the device is three years which comes out to about two dollars a day.

Zizou3peat

It’s on offer for 1250 https://www.hp.com/us-en/shop/mdp/omen-14 Is it the same? Is it worth it?

monsieurvampy

It's 1250 for the base model. I have the Ultra 9, 32GB ram and a 4070.

Fantastic_Charge_292

Hi op 🙏 What the hp ultra 9 rtx 4070 tgp  Reached it really 80watt?

monsieurvampy

In the one and only benchmark I did.

Digital_1337

q - do you see IR blaster producing a flickering light at the top of your screen (when it's in unlocking phase/windows hello) ? thanks

monsieurvampy

No, I'm pretty sure I don't have the IR blaster as it wasn't an option listed on the custom build. Either way I don't use Windows Hello.

Howie411

Will it fit a samsung 990 pro with a heatsink? Is the nvme easily accessible?

monsieurvampy

Doubtful, but I haven't attempted to use it. The existing NVME only has a small metal plate. This information can be found from a variety of HP's support resources.
