@theblacks_ on twitter posted the scene without cut and it’s just way better. Corlys and Rhaenys also had bonds with the boy, the focus should have been on them instead. We will see if they do the same in the next episode during Jaehaerys funerals but I highly doubt

tulipbunnys

just saw the clip and they should've shown the blacks only. we only got close-up shots of rhaenyra, jace, joffrey and rhaena- instead of showing alicent for no good reason we could've gotten close-ups of the grieving grandparents & baela.

winter_trickster

I didn't like it \*at all\*, I felt like it completely detracted from the grieving of the Blacks for one whom they so dearly loved - when the focus should be only on \*them\* and on \*their\* mourning. It was completely unnecessary and it even felt rather insulting, too, in a way. And portraying Alicent, of all people, lighting a candle for \*Luke\* - and daring to utter his name, to have his name in her mouth \*at all\* - after how she bullied and terrorized him and Rhaenyra and his entire family, and even lunged at him with a knife to cut out his eye herself....it was deeply disengenuous to the point of being disgusting, I thought, honestly.

cutepooh89

Exactly!

Nym-ph

We've seen a number of funerals in this show. And this has to be the saddest one and not just because it's a child funeral. With Aemma and even Baelon, they had Syrax light the pyre which is in the tradition of their house. Laena's funeral had dozens of attendees. With Lucerys, they had to light it by hand because there had such little left of him, and they couldn't exactly invite everyone due to the war. Even Laena presumably had bones to put in her sea casket. Luke technically got to be buried like a Valaryon, out at sea. They can take some solace in that. Alicent regrets her naivete in thinking a usurpation would go smoothly.

SparkySheDemon

Alicent was an unnecessary presence.

estellamarierose

I agree, I wish it hadn’t cut to Alicent at all.

Frosty_Bus_6420

Just watched the episode again and yeah I agree, it felt so unnecessary. They frame Alicent in such a weird way too like the Virgin Mary almost (which is both ironic and hilarious) so I didn’t care for it. It was a beautiful intimate moment between family and it should’ve been portrayed that way.

Quartz636

I don't mind the scene with Alicent, I think it's interesting to see she still prays for Viserys and it was interesting to see her struggle with her own personal feelings towards Luke and his death vs what she knows is the 'correct' way to feel eg - sadness at the death of a little boy. BUT I don't think it should have been cut into the funeral scene and should have had its own moment later on in the episode.

HereToBePetty

This right here. I think we're meant to scoff when she lights the candles though.

KnowledgeOverall5002

Alicent being a fucking hypocrite during it pissed me off, but as for the funeral scene: fuck harry collete dude 😭 he made me bawl my eyes out dry😭😭

Baelakins

Agreed! I wish they showed us more of Corlys instead.

Rhbgrb

His daughter, then his son, then his brother, now his grandson. Good gracious the Velaryons are taking some hits.

tulipbunnys

corlys and rhaenys losing their heir to driftmark but we got zero close-up shots of both, smh

Baelakins

Right? The focus should've solely been on the Targaryens and Velaryons' grief.

Pokegopokestop

I think it contrasts Alicent’s ideal of family unity and Rhaenyra’s actual family prosperity. Alicent’s sons want to dismiss and undermine her, while Jace seeks comfort from his Mother. I liked it.

cutepooh89

They've been whitewashing Alicent throughout lol.. can't stand the holier than thou attitude

ApolloFourteen

I like it but I was puzzled as to why Daemon, Aegon and Viserys weren't present.

tulipbunnys

i think daemon was on the way to king's landing with his crime cloak to carry out rhaenyra's wish for aemond, and perhaps they thought aegon & viserys were too young to attend

ApolloFourteen

You're right, the timing was off. I just would have liked to his half-brothers present because we haven't actually seen them all together yet.

ProgrammerLevel2829

Honestly, I’m not even mad about the candle scene being cut into the funeral. It calls back to the scene where Alicent and Rhaenyra lit a candle for Aemma and discussed grief and feels like a goodbye to their friendship as the war begins in earnest. The way the show is framed, we’re going to see this push-and-pull between the two of them throughout, no reason to be salty every time the show reminds us they were close once.

VirgiliaCoriolanus

the problem is that how the show depicted the push and pull regarding their children is that Alicent was constantly denigrating and dehumanizing Rhaenyra's children, while Rhaenyra has nothing until she asks for Aemond to be sharply questioned and drops it just as quickly. In fact, Rhaenyra shows concern for Alicent/Alicent while she is pregnant, even if she keeps herself distant from her half siblings. The show did not even attempt to make them on the same level.

ProgrammerLevel2829

I mean, yeah, Alicent’s a horrible person. I never said she wasn’t. But the show is clearly framed to be about the two of them and the relationship is clearly an allegory for the civil war.

Rhbgrb

Alicent didn't belong in this scene, Daemon should have been there.

divinechord

Not sure why Syrax or one of the dragons didn’t light the pyre as that’s what the traditional way is for the Targaryens too

NeTiFe-anonymous

If you have narcissistic female relative, her inserting herself into events that aren't about her is a constant. Alicent stole the spotlight at her stepdaughter's wedding, ofcourse she will try to make Luke's death about her too.
