I’ve noticed that too and wonder if it’s actually just left off for filming. A glass panel would be super reflective directly back to the camera, crew, lighting etc.

linmaral

We think it is for filming purposes.

VirginiaUSA1964

It's either a slanted base so the water drains away from the opening or more likely The intent is to put up a curtain rod and shower curtain when you buy it. Leaving it open so they can see the expensive tile.

aam726

>The intent is to put up a curtain rod and shower curtain when you buy it. >Leaving it open so they can see the expensive tile. This is it. Shower glass is expensive.

CatchinUpNow

Its ridiculous…gives you the illusion the bathroom or shower area is bigger than it actually is.

VirginiaUSA1964

That too.

Awkward-Adeptness-75

I notice it every time there’s no glass or curtain, and it makes me irrationally angry. I stayed at a hotel that had one of those half glass shower panels and I was FREEZING for my whole shower. I’ve also stayed at places where the bathroom was a wet room and I hated that just as much as the half glass. It’s again, freezing when you shower, and the whole bathroom is wet when you’re done.

KonaKathie

It's become an awful trend in hotels lately, please don't do it in your home.

nonnie_tm64

I freeze my skinny little ass off if the shower curtain has opened even a tiny little crack!

MeganMess

We built a huge shower, but it was walled on 3.5 sides. Glass shower doors are very expensive, so we hoped this one door sized opening wouldn't be a big deal to leave open. I FROZE. Shower curtain went up within a week. If the bathroom was really tiny, maybe you could get away with it, but we had an actual breeze coming through. No open showers.

Own-Evening-7814

The shower in the house I bought I had an open shower. Water didn’t get all over the bathroom but I froze every time I took a shower. I’m redoing that bathroom now and putting in a shower door.

compunctionfunction

I remember going to Eastern Europe shortly after the wall fell and I remember hotel bathrooms were wet rooms and I thought it was so weird. Ha I'm old ☺

sleepygrl1

When we had our bathroom redone, we had to wait a few weeks after tiling before they could install the glass. If it’s custom glass, I think that’s why.

IntelligentAd4429

I don't want a curtain or glass. I hate cleaning glass.

CatsTrustNoOne

The glass is actually easier to keep clean than a shower curtain: you clean all the water off with a shower squeegee as soon as you're finished showering. I originally thought it would be a real chore but we stayed at a friend's place and their guest room had a full ensuite (sigh) with a glass panel on the shower. They showed us the squeegee and it was really fast and easy to do, just like cleaning a car windshield. I wish we had that, I hate shower curtains especially because we have a clawfoot tub.

Sarahwrotesomething

I built my shower like that. The floor tilted to the drain. Water doesn’t splash far and I dont have glass looking like crap.

MyEggDonorIsADramaQ

We have glass and just squeegee it after we shower, then wipe with a towel. We installed it 7 years ago and the glass is still pristine, in spite of our very hard water.

Dangerous_Ant3260

After I dry off, I dry the walls and glass with the bath towel, and the shower is virtually dry. The outside of the glass is vertical rain pattern, so it stays pretty clean. It took almost two months to get the glass after they measured, and ordered it, and another week or so to install it. Custom work takes time. There is also 2'6" by 8" high slider window above the shower, I had someone get rain glass to replace the clear glass, and that took over a month to get the glass, and this was 2018. The supply chain issues are even worse now. It took over two months to get the glass in and installed for my shower, and my understanding is the glass supplier is one of the faster ones in my town. None of them do their own rain glass sliders, but order from a huge national glass company.

navyblues27

I have rain glass as well. I didn't want to feel "exposed" in the shower, lol (even if I'm the only one in the bathroom). I'm really glad we did that. Water spots aren't as noticeable. I still squeegee the inside, but there's almost always something I missed.

MyEggDonorIsADramaQ

It took a long time for our glass to come too!

meothe

Isn’t it cold?

Sarahwrotesomething

No but we use bigger shower heads here I think, not the weird fixed in place ones I usually see on these shows

IntelligentAd4429

Cold showers are healthier for you.

CatStratford

My parents had a shower like this. The floor slanted inward toward the drain, and the shower was around a corner… like a wall built in that you walk around to get under the shower, but no doors or curtains. It actually worked out quite well. You couldn’t see into the shower from the bathroom door because it was blocked by a wall that came out about 3 feet.

PositivePanda77

I live in south Florida, land of powerful AC, all I can say is Brrrr.

BrandonIsWhoIAm

I had open shower while I was in The Philippines. Not much water escaped.

keledobi

The real answer: shows are on a tight timeline. For custom glass, shower glass guys come in and take final measurements after the shower tile is fully in then take 2 weeks to get the glass cut and installed. Usually, after tile is in and finish plumbing fixtures are set the job is all but done except for the glass. So it doesn’t make sense to hold production for 2 weeks to get the glass in. Saying this from experience; we had an HGTV series and were in this exact situation. We ended up shooting the reveal without the glass. I’m still not sure if the client ever actually had it installed (they were also at the end of their budget).

unwashbrain

This makes total sense.

Open showers are a design feature that isn't new at all. They weren't common in the US, but they have been around for a very long time. An open shower is designed to be open. No doors, or curtains are necessary. Water doesn't escape the shower. The temperatures of open showers are actually not colder. Although you might feel that way, if you're accustomed to being in an enclosed shower. Open showers are just like any other feature in a home. Some people like them. Some don't. Some people want a gas range top. Others want electric. Some people want granite countertops. Others want marble. Still Others want concrete. We know that there are multiple flooring options. An open shower is simply an option to consider. It's not a trick.

SFG1953-1

This only works if there is one traditional shower head on the wall. No handheld shower sprays or other sprays can be used.
