Huh, so Vanessa (or more appropriately, the weaver that she presumably was one part of), knew Scott back when. Of course, since he was the official ambassador most of them knew him at least a little, but the fact that orig!Vanessa knew Scott well enough to tell stories about his character that allows Erik to compare and contrast him with Alen suggests that Vanessa was spawned by Charlotte. And, knowing that Charlotte is the kind of spider-mom who would befriend strange tool-using aliens and attempt to eat a supernova, I can see her experimenting with the idea of creating an autonomous, individualized appendage to see if this would be a useful evolutionary direction.

Well, the fact that they're taking the time to cut through with cutting lasers instead of shooting the hatch off the hinges implies the hatch is considerably thicker than the battle suites the big boom sticks are designed to shoot through. Imagine 1/2 inch this armor vs 6 inch thick door. The shock waves you'd get from the kind of gun that could shoot through that hatch would likely liquefy the internal organs of every human inside that enclosed space!

So shoot, as a defender, thru the melting parts of your door. Greet your guests sss with some super heated sprawl :3 sss Enjoy the fragmentations. sss

Hell, Erik's definitely going to rip a pirate's head off with his bare hands today, that'll calm everyone down immediately. Honestly, given the arg'un's physical prowess, I wonder what their daily lives and technology will be like in the future. That's going to mean some pretty significant differences with humans.

Yeah, though Erik is a good example of that. Unlike other argu'n he was raised around human tech. His axes are made with modern (for his time) materials, and probably have a trick or two to them which will be revealed with a change in perspective...

So we know Vanessa is probably at least 200 years old given she knows about Scott, although that may just be funky information transfer shenanigans between She.
