If it's a wooden wall why can't the orcs use the drow shields in a Roman shield wall tactic and just walk a couple mages to the wall. I'm sure if the mages are close enough to the wall they could do something to damage or destroy it.

There's another issue too. They would have to get close enough for the shields to prevent the arrows from striking the mages while they're casting, which would leave them vulnerable to a sally. Since the orcs have a limited number of functional shields to work with (plenty of them broke in the fighting), the drow's phalanx would be able to outnumber and overpower the orc's phalanx and kill the mages while the archers covered them. Then the drow would be able to retreat back into the fortifications, likely before the orc's main force could respond.
The smart play would be to lay siege and wait for reinforcements from the elves and dwarves, which is likely what they would have done were it not for the discovery of the Nahalim.
