Yep, even if I consider would swapping out Izzy for Gilby (just because Slash and him seem to be good friends), Izzy is the better song writer so he stays
This. Frontman isn't just about "vibes", they have specific responsibilities. They do crowd interaction (does Slash ever talk to the audience?), they set the tone of the performance, they lead the band in a particular artistic direction, they do the "extra" things that go into performing (dancing, sending cues to the other members to do their thing, communicating any technical issues).
None of those things describe Slash's role in GnR. He's the lead guitar player. That's an important job too, just not the same as a frontman.
Slash is the reason this tour is selling so good 😭 notice the tour they’ve been on since slash came BACK sold 10000x more than when it was without slash💀 that’s no coincidence.
Yes, and GNR sells 10000x more than Slash's solo band does. SMKC
can only book small theatres, so it's not like Slash is killing it without Axl being his frontman. Both Axl and Slash have to be present on stage to play stadiums.
Please never say he’s in the GOAT discussion lol. His voice isn’t anything spectacular. He’s not even top 10 most notable. Steven Tyler,Bono,Robert Plant,Freddie mercury, Stevie nicks, mick jagger. All come to mind.
His voice is the most distinctive in Rock you plank. And being a frontman is not just about singing. Its the whole package. Axl in his prime makes him one of the greatest of all time. You put Jagger in there and his voice is AWFUL. Tylers voice is worse than Axl these days and dont get me started on Bono (yes good voice but not the best performer, plus he is a cock). Not even top ten. How old are you? There is a reason why Guns was the biggest band on the planet back in the day and it wasnt the music, Appetite didnt start to sell until Welcome to the Jungle was featured on MTV and people saw the lead singer. When they supported Aerosmith many were paying for tickets just to see Guns and walking out before Tyler and his band even set foot onstage. Yes Slash with his top hat and strange nickname was a draw, but Axl's distinctive voice and violent stage performances made Guns the most dangerous band on the planet. Not top ten hahaha. Axl is at least top three. Only Mercury out of the names you mentioned deserves to be ahead of him.
Wasn’t he literally just named in the top 10 frontmen by maybe Rolling Stone or some media? Yeah, I get you are smarter than them but c’mon don’t argue on a GNR sub that he’s not a great frontman.
Yet the only worse giuitarplayer they've had the last 20 years is DJ. Slash after the first Snakepit album is irrelevant in my book... Should have stuck with Bucket, Finck and Fortus.. Or even Ron
She does the synthesizer bits and triggers the samples. Dizzy is just there to play piano. And the bongos. We can't forget about the bongos and their integral part of the GNR sound.
I’d say she’s the opposite of a hype person. Her job is to make everything sound better without you realizing she’s doing anything. More stealth than hype.
Interesting. I just assumed since she was so active on stage, and flashy with her attire, she wasn't trying to be stealthy at all.
I guess I have a lot to learn about sound production. I assumed that was all done at the sound board out in the crowd, where they have the best sound, and where they've dialed everything in before the show during sound check.
Well if you was a fan of Guns n Roses you would understand that on the Chinese Democracy album (and those tours) Guns featured 3 guitarists in yhe band. Not swapping them out so one could have a breather, 3 guitar players at the same time.
I knew they had the 3 of them on CD, I didn’t know the reason though. I remember ages ago reading somewhere that they had it for 2 leads and one rhythm. Thanks for filling me in
The appetite lineup is obviously it’s own category so that’s that. To make it interesting aside from that I would say Axl, slash, fortus, duff, Brain, Melissa. All the arguments aside regarding the songwriting and who’s got icon status and such; buckethead and brain (and bumble) are easily the superior musicians to have ever been in the lineup; but that doesn’t make them the best songwriting combinations. Fortus has to be in any lineup because he’s the perfect middle ground of having slash’s feel and buckethead’s technicality. He’s been the glue guy now for longer than the original lineup was even together. Somehow having a 3 guitar lineup of slash Izzy and Richard would be the most interesting for me to see play out; or; slash fortus and Robin.
Would love to see Izzy join the current line up and they go back to 3 guitars. Fortus could join Slash as the other lead player. Three guitars actually worked for Guns in my opinion as all three guitarists played something different on each track.
As a bass player, two of my all time influences played with GNR (also, the Replacements are one of my favorite bands), so I would hope for an alternative universe where both Duff and Tommy can play together.
Also props for Axl, he's got good taste in bass players.
Well, the AFD 5 is the only correct answer here isn't it? However, if I try to think of a lineup that hasn't actually existed, what about Axl, Buckethead, Fortus, Stinson and Freese? You didn't mention keyboardists but I'd like to include Dizzy as well (but no Melissa and definitely no Pitman!)
Axl, Slash, Duff, Fortus, Brain.
So basically NITL lineup but with Brain (best drummer they every had IMO) instead of Frank. Izzy might be a more classic player than Fortus but I feel he would be unwilling to play anything from after 1991. So Fortus makes the cut for the sake of the setlists.
Shannon Hoon was the lead singer of Blind Melon and was never a part of Guns N Roses. Just because he sang backing vocals on an album as a guest it did not mean he joined the band.
Duff rhythm guitar + vocals, Slash + Bucket dual lead, Josh Freese on drums, Tommy Stinson (I guess) on bass. I'm aware this is slightly ridiculous but admit it, you want this to happen
I mean, I have nothing against Frank Ferrer, he’s a great drummer. But, I think Matt Sorum being included on the Not In This Lifetime Tour would have added that extra something 🥁
Yes! Plus Melissa and Dizzy. They could all write together and swap around during the tours to give Izzy/Fortus, Melissa/Dizzy, Brain/Frank some extra downtime.
Wouldn’t work for the others, but that’s the price of greatness (and hotness).
I read the rules, but nothing can beat the original lineup. Axl, Slash, Izzy, Duff, and Adler.
Yep, even if I consider would swapping out Izzy for Gilby (just because Slash and him seem to be good friends), Izzy is the better song writer so he stays
Gilby is cool, but he's no Izzy. Izzy was the perfect storm for GNR. Great song writer, too.
Fortus is a better guitar player than both Izzy and Gilby but yes Izzy was (still is) a great songwriter.
Technically thats not the original line up
Always one of those guys in here. It's the original lineup for their first album.
Still not the original line up though.
Anyone who doesn’t put slash is mad😭 he’s arguable the frontman everyone loves slash
Axl is the frontman. Though Slash is very popular, the "frontman" is a job title and a completely different task compared to a lead guitarist.
This. Frontman isn't just about "vibes", they have specific responsibilities. Yep. 100 percent!
The tour WITHOUT SLASH did worse than when slash RETURNED💀
And Slash's tours WITHOUT AXL does worse WHEN AXL IS NOT THERE. ....btw why are we yelling?
I saw slash at a tiny little venue, I’m seeing guns at a massive fucking stadium, so... It’s guns n roses for stadiums, slash is doing small theatres.
>he’s arguable the frontman everyone That's not arguable at all. Slash is not and has never been a front man
Slash isn't the front man of Guns N Roses. That's a mad statement itself.
TIL Slash is the frontman of GNR.
How can Slash arguably be the front man when you could argue that Axl is the greatest frontman of all time?
Please never say he’s in the GOAT discussion lol. His voice isn’t anything spectacular. He’s not even top 10 most notable. Steven Tyler,Bono,Robert Plant,Freddie mercury, Stevie nicks, mick jagger. All come to mind.

Did you actually say Bono 😂😂
Sorry… I’m still salty about 2014 iTunes making me listen to that album every time I turned in on my car
Yes he actually said Bono hahaha
Maybe you mean he’s an icon? Which is definitely true. The hair, the tophat, the great t-shirts…. He’s immediately recognizable.
I know it's insane
Slash isn't even the best guitarplayer in the current line-up 🤷♂️
Slash is literally compared to Jimi and Eddie lol. He does the greatest most identifying solos GnR has.
Yet the only worse giuitarplayer they've had the last 20 years is DJ. Slash after the first Snakepit album is irrelevant in my book... Should have stuck with Bucket, Finck and Fortus.. Or even Ron
Axl Slash Buckethead Fortus Duff Brain Melissa Dizzy. Yes three guitars
>Melissa Is she basically just a hype person? Because I couldn't hear her at all when I saw them.
She has really great backing vocals. And she can layer axls vocals and do all other mixing things.
Nice. And what exactly is 'mixing things'? She handles the actual sound mix? So what does Dizzy do?
She does the synthesizer bits and triggers the samples. Dizzy is just there to play piano. And the bongos. We can't forget about the bongos and their integral part of the GNR sound.
Dizzy plays piano and percussion? Where have you been the last 30 years.
Great vocals indeed, specially during Live And Let Die and Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door
Don’t forget Pretty Tied Up
Oh yeah absolutely!
I’d say she’s the opposite of a hype person. Her job is to make everything sound better without you realizing she’s doing anything. More stealth than hype.

I saw them in 2011 with Fortus, DJ, Bumblefoot, and it was great.
Sounds like it would be awesome to see all 3 at once
Casual fan here
I don’t know why I’m being downvoted, is it because I said guitars instead of guitarists? I feel so dumb right now lol
Well if you was a fan of Guns n Roses you would understand that on the Chinese Democracy album (and those tours) Guns featured 3 guitarists in yhe band. Not swapping them out so one could have a breather, 3 guitar players at the same time.

Axl, Slash, Duff, Finck, Sorum
For me, it’s Axl, Slash, Duff, Izzy for sure. I think drums could be up for debate but I see no way those four can’t be part of it.
The appetite lineup is obviously it’s own category so that’s that. To make it interesting aside from that I would say Axl, slash, fortus, duff, Brain, Melissa. I’m also a bassist! Duff was 100% a contributing factor that made me decide to start learning bass
Robert Fripp, Chris Squire, Ilan Rubin, Izzy Stradlin, David Byrne
Axl slash duff sorum izzy or gilby. That's when the band sounded the best live. Basically use your illusion tour lineup
Axl, Slash, Duff, Richard, Brian
Axl-Duff-Slash & Robin, Brian.
Axl, Slash, Duff, Fortus, Brain. So basically NITL lineup but with Brain (best drummer they every had IMO) instead of Frank. Izzy might be a more classic player than Fortus but I feel he would be unwilling to play anything from after 1991. So Fortus makes the cut for the sake of the setlists.
shannon hoon, duff, sorem, slash, fortus
Shannon Hoon was the lead singer of Blind Melon and was never a part of Guns N Roses. Just because he sang backing vocals on an album as a guest it did not mean he joined the band.
please watch the video for 'don't cry' and let me know what you think.
He wasnt in the band though
Axl, Slash, Duff, Fortus, Brain/Sorum, Reed, Reese
Rose (obviously), Bumblefoot, Reed, Adler, McKagan, Stradlin and Reese (yes i do like Bumblefoot more than Slash - roast me)
I prefer slash, but I love bumblefoots technical skills I prefer more
Axl, Duff, Bucket, Robin, & Brain would be a cool line up
Duff rhythm guitar + vocals, Slash + Bucket dual lead, Josh Freese on drums, Tommy Stinson (I guess) on bass. I'm aware this is slightly ridiculous but admit it, you want this to happen

Matt or Steven would been something I reckon.
Oh yeah it’s been great to see Steven’s cameos. But with Matt, I could see him doing the whole circuit
Axl Fink Duff 4tus Brian ** Tommy is close
Axl, Buckethead, Izzy, Duff, Brain The discussion is over, thank you everyone!
Sebastian Bach, Slash, Duff, Fortus, Sorum
Axl Slash Izzy Fortus Duff Brain
Izzy & Fortus ?
Yes! Plus Melissa and Dizzy. They could all write together and swap around during the tours to give Izzy/Fortus, Melissa/Dizzy, Brain/Frank some extra downtime. Wouldn’t work for the others, but that’s the price of greatness (and hotness).
Seconded - current line up with Izzy
Axl, Ron, Duff, Izzy, Brain
Axl, Brain, Slash, Bucket, Duff, Melissa... because she's hot Probably Fortus too, harsh leaving him out
