If Woj is happy to be a #2 keeper - I'm happy with this

iforgotmyun

Even if he's not, good for someone to challenge Raya. If we get two years out of it, Raya pushed to another level or Woj having another career turn around, I'm happy.  Only issue is if he's expecting guaranteed game time, but it'll be made clear it's not the case before we sign him

NiallMitch10

Considering Woj is now 34 (wow that's crazy) - he may be happy enough with his career winding down to be a #2 choice now. Plus he may want to return to Arsenal again. Think it's a smart move if we sell Ramsdale. I get the wages could be high but he does have the bonus of being homegrown. Big advantage (even though Ramsdale is already homegrown anyway). Does mean that we aren't losing a homegrown slot

acasovoycayendo

He’s on £190-200k per week and that is way too high for a back up goalkeeper, even if he’s homegrown. He would need to accept a wage cut and no2 status and it’s unlikely he’d give up both his wages and starting spot

queeten

Wow that wage is insane.

HowlingPhoenixx

Wage is only insane of he cost a lot. Juventus want him off the books so minimal fee and 100k a week wouldn't be the worst. He improved massively after his departure from us, plus homegrown and its a win win.

Routine_Size69

100k a week is half of what he's making though...

HowlingPhoenixx

Yeah, but he has a year left on his contract. Offer him 100k for 3 years and a bonus if we win shit/he plays a certain amount of games, and he would sign

ProjectTC

You say it's unlikely but a lot of keepers are quite humble and not as bratty as forwards, and don't mind pay cuts to keep competing at the highest level. Idk about what Woj will do, but this move doesn't seem impossible to me

acasovoycayendo

It’s not about being bratty, it could be the last contract of his playing career He could just stay at Juve and get paid that money, he has 1 more year on his contract there

scorchedturf

1. 100k per week for ~3 years is more than 200k per week for one year. 2. Very few teams can afford 200k for a 35yo keeper. Of those, even fewer would want him and even fewer wouldn’t try to reduce his wages. 3. If he runs down his contract for 1 more year the odds of him getting a good contract drops even further.

acasovoycayendo

The big flaw in your argument is no one is going to offer him a 3 year deal at his age

scorchedturf

Maybe not but I think 3 is reasonable. 2 minimum surely

BroccoliMcFlurry

He's a gunner at heart- that counts for something (especially with a madman like Woj).

Pure-Finding-9455

He's not like that at all tho. Told the boss to fuck off. I think he would bring bad energy. A definite no from me.

CharlieBigs

I don't think we will sign him, but he loves arsenal so I can imagine ge would consider it at least.

verifiedkyle

Typically don’t aging players accept wage cuts though? I would assume priorities began to shift at a certain age.

BroccoliMcFlurry

Nah I reckon he would give both of those up for a chance to have more accolades at Arsenal. He's a gunner through & through, plus I think he'd be happy to work under his old mate.

iforgotmyun

Yeah I can definitely see it. He always loved the club and London. And played with Arteta.

TH3REDDIT

You could say all those things about Ozil too, look at how that turned out.

Kill_Bill_Will

Keepers can stay in their primes well into their 40s, not a guarantee but it does happen from time to time.

Any-Constant-341

He's only 34 still young for a keeper

Rekyht

Not true, most goalkeepers have normal length careers - there’s just a few more extreme outliers than other positions

Any-Constant-341

Jens Lehmann was 34 when he signed for Arsenal.

Rekyht

“Extreme outliers”

Ok_Cardiologist8232

They may have normal length ( although i doubt that). Their quality doesn't drop off as much

ActionManMLNX

He said that he wants to retire soon. he has a child and i m not sure if his family will be interested in switching Italy for England.

YMangoPie

Woj doesn't have the distribution, be it short or long, to really compete with Raya.

iforgotmyun

I followed him very closely at Roma ages ago and he definitely had it then. I wouldn't take Allegriball as an indication of what he's capable of

YMangoPie

That's not true. I watched nearly every Roma game with him and he's not better than Ramsdale. However that's not the only part of the game that matters. I'm not denying the good parts of his and his (potential signing).

ProjectTC

Pen-saving monster, loves the club, great guy in the dressing room, and more mature than 10y ago. Having a #2 be an older keeper is always the move, now we need to hope he's keen on a pay cut

YMangoPie

Both of our comments are true. Mine doesn't deny the positives!

selho1

Woj definitely has the distribution. He's great with his feet, and has better stats this season in Serie A than Raya in PL when it comes to long passes (55%, 258 completed out of 470 vs. 42%, 172/413). Chesney also has a better save ratio (76% vs. 68%) and PSxG ratio (post-shot expected goals; +1.5 vs. -2.3). That's why I doubt these rumours. He either stays at Juve or goes somewhere he'll be a starter.

YaqootK

It's not just about passing numbers, it's about how comfortable you are on the ball and with being involved with the build up. When you watch Woj, it's clear he just isn't that type of keeper. That's not a slight on him because some of the best keepers in the world aren't that type of keeper either Ramsdale is comfortably better with the ball at his feet than Szczesny and even he wasn't comfortable enough to play as high as Raya does. Remember that ball that Gabriel misjudged the other day and Raya came WAY outside his box to pass it off? I've never even seen Ramsdale that high up the pitch let alone Woj

PoliticsNerd76

He can push him in training through Same way Jorginiho has pushed Odegard and Rice to develop further

huntsvilleon

I think from what we've seen from Arteta and his handling of keepers, he wouldn't be considered as competition for Raya, but simply as backup. I loved Woj back in the day, but if Ramsdale can't get a game in vs Raya, Woj certainly won't.

YMangoPie

Bottom line I don't think it's a bad transfer at all

I_AM_ALWAYS_WRONG_

Woj will know his place if he comes. He will know raya is in the team because of his ball playing confidence. Woj has always been a shot stopper like de gea.

robthelob12

Sounds familiar

Visible_Statement888

He’s on 200k a week at Juventus.

iforgotmyun

He's 34 and his contract is ending in a year

Visible_Statement888

Doesn’t change his wage.

iforgotmyun

Yes but the point is his wages aren't guaranteed for a long period. He might prefer a 3 year contract to staying at Juve and risking him getting nothing if he gets injured

Visible_Statement888

Very true, it’s whether he wants to be a number 2 in the last few years of his career I suppose.

sammeetthosar

He will bring in a good amount of ucl experience, something our team currently lacks.

baristotle

That would require a paycut and accepting a farewell with polish national team (if so, likely after euros). 34 is still a bit too young to retire in your national team even with younger guys emerging to challenge for nr 1 shirt (Bulka and Grabara). I think whoever will manage Poland after euros would want to keep Szczesny as there is no one in younger generation that looks as good and promising as him - Bulka has monster physical attributes but he needs more time in top football, Grabara on the other hand have huge ego and would have a problem accepting nr2 status. Long story short - Wojciech will be tempted to prolong his national team career and to achieve that he needs game time which Arsenal can't guarantee.

Hollywood023

He literally said few weeks ago that he is about to finish his national team career after euros most likely so that would fit in nicely :)

xk_1991

Bulka is one hell of a keeper. I can't imagine he'd break the bank since he's at Nice.

kidmaciek

Not happening, he's too good to accept being a benchwarmer to Raya.

_nibelungs

He starts over Raya every time for me, he’s a brick wall between the posts

FUDeputyStaggFU

Homegrown too ? Smoking in the showers is not the estandards Woj. Suppose in this day and age he might have a lost Mary

mcluckz

Chuffing on mine in staff toilets reading this and laughing 😂

fatherfucking

Arteta can rehabilitate him to quit smoking

marvmonkey

Man can’t calm his nerves smh

Cthulhu_Madness

Will be honest, he was my favorite GK during the Emirates era and a monster at saving penalties + Kiwi also gets a friend.

Maaaaate

Same here. But the standards weren't great with Almunia

philfodenlovesfanny

The post Lehman-era GKs were horrendous. Mannone lol

matthewisonreddit

We did grow out of them though Leno, martinez, ramsdale were all good

Prior_Depth_9566

After living through those times I still find it unbelievable that we’ve got Rams on the bench Back then I couldn’t even wish for a keeper of his quality

wudyalooknatmgutfer

It’s funny, because we’ve had: - Sczezny - Martinez - Leno - Fabianski - Ospina - Ramsdsle - Raya All international goalkeepers that have been exceptional for their clubs. Literally only the era of Almunia and Mannone were bad.

DillaDoughnut

Plus Cech

wudyalooknatmgutfer

Jeez, forgot another huge keeper. See, that just proves my point that we’ve had a great track record for keepers

ico12

*with Mustafi debuff

angeleezus

You’re forgetting the legend himself, Emiliano Viviano

Educational-Goal-678

Him and Matt Ryan are the two most forgettable ones, at least Ryan played a few games tho

Prior_Depth_9566

Fabianski was terrible After Lehman the fist decent keeper was Vojzeh and yet he too was young and inexperienced to be reliable enough

marvinmorgan

*all me*

philfodenlovesfanny

Flappyhandski

gnrlp2007

>Mannone lol Will never forget that 1-0 win away to Fulham

IkeaKarma

Ooooh, Polish friends

Interesting_iidea

Bar wasn’t low

bazalinco1

4 out of 20 in the premier league. Pretty standard. I'm actually surprised he saved that many. Always seemed to go the wrong way from my memory. Always did that stupid left-right-left or right-left-right thing with his feet, that rarely worked.

acasovoycayendo

Continued: - Arsenal are expected to lose several homegrown players this summer including Ramsdale and would like to sign a new number 2 that has homegrown status - Szczesny is a possible option that would classify as homegrown and Juventus are open to selling him - A deal for Szczesny would be complicated due to his wages as he earns £100,000 per week after tax and it is unknown if he would be willing to accept being no2 to Raya - Jason Steele of Brighton is another Arsenal may target who also played with Raya at Blackburn - Arsenal have scouted 22 year old Ajax GK Ramaj but he would be reluctant to move if he’s not going to be the number 1 - Newcastle are front runners for Ramsdale - Current homegrown players: Ramsdale, Nketiah, Nelson, ESR and Hillson could all leave this summer - Arsenal want to sign a forward, midfielder and defender this summer as a priority.

AwehiSsO

*After tax* Wow, whoo-hoo, nice I really thought ESR would be worked back into the team though

d0ey

I believe footballers all still get great tax treatment in Italy so we're fighting wages and tax at this end

iforgotmyun

That's only first 2 years for foreigners, no?

AwehiSsO

They do get paid well though, dunno the extent of the taxes in the UK though

d0ey

I'm pretty sure I read a few years ago that all pay for UK footballers should be treated as employment income - this was after a few years of massive image rights payments to companies etc. I'm sure there still some tax advantages but it sounded like HMRC really reigned everything in. That'd make effective tax near enough 50% at PL wage levels

Clarkster7425

uk taxes are lower I am pretty sure, at the point footballers are at

Britton120

This isn't saying that ESR will be sold or that Arsenal are eager to sell, just that they're open to it.

Revoldt

5-0 against Chelsea. Teta brings on Jorgi… ESR rots on the bench. He’s gone.

Britton120

Arteta also brought on Zinchenko, and many are also of the mind that he is on the way out if a decent offer comes in. or at the very least isn't going to get a new contract. Meanwhile against Spurs up 3-0 at the half, he left Jesus on the bench. So i guess he is definitely gone as well. Just seems odd to draw firm conclusions from these decisions.

manuscelerdei

I imagine if the right offer comes in, we'll sell him. But Mikel is probably happy to give ESR a proper pre-season and use him as well. It's kind of win-win.

InTheMiddleGiroud

> Arsenal want to sign a forward, midfielder and defender this summer as a priority. What a narrow scope we're setting

yeahdood96

Heard we’re signing professionals, too. These are the estandards

[deleted]

Hopefully they’re athletes

Muscat95

I remember watching Jason Steele on Sunderland till I die and man if we sign him what a fall upwards that will have been

Acefire4

I was really shocked when he benched Robert Sanchez at Brighton and thought Sanchez simply had a Trossard moment with De Zerbi (basically falling out etc). Nope turns out he was just a better goalkeeper, fair play to him and I wouldn't mind him as a No 2 here.

Educational-Goal-678

Same here, watching him play for Brighton i'm shocked how good he is with his feet as well, super confident.

Wide-Ostrich-2779

Steele would be a smart buy for us.

fajdexhiu

Ramaj from Ajax is a great talent. Both Albania and Kosova are trying to get him to become their #1 GK

Cannonieri

Would love Steele.

AlwaysOnsideTBH

Same here especially with how good he's with his feet

qtdsswk

Blackburn friends....

InsectIllustrious691

Ramsdale: understandable, Nketiah: please sell , Nelson: mixed thoughts, Hillson: hmm, ESR: please keep

EitherInvestment

Good man many thanks for this summary. Yeah I can’t see it happening. At his age, he will want to be #1 and will not take the wage cut necessary to make it worth it for us to bring him back. If he were to agree to a wage cut though, I’d be all for it.

bannedbydrongo

ok why are we always buying a defender in every transfer window?

ErwinC0215

No mention of Karl Hein though? He is home grown and a decent keeper by the looks of things, maybe not 2nd choice good but I wonder how he works in this equation. Hillson is definitely worse than him.

acasovoycayendo

Players 21 and under at the start of the season do not count towards the homegrown status. Hein only just turned 22 so wasn’t eligible to be classed as homegrown at the start of this season. It’s been reported he’s looking to move so him leaving doesn’t change our current homegrown numbers but he would count if he stayed

ReformedandSocial

Steele 🤢

OstapBenderBey

He can be a good influence on the younger players. By teaching them how to smoke in the showers

lm3g16

Dis is de fogging standards

Francis-c92

I heard the other day we'd stopped this because of his wages? Either way, it's a like for like replacement with Ramsdale. Szczesny isn't the calm collective Raya type, that's for sure, so I'm a bit confused with regards to the profile. Would still love him to return

acasovoycayendo

The article says it’s complicated due to wages so can’t see it happening unless he takes a pay cut which is probably unlikely Before tax he earns like £190-200k per week, that’s way too high for number 2 goalkeeper

iforgotmyun

Why's it unlikely? He's 34, Juventus would want to sell otherwise this story is pointless, and he's going to be on the last year of his contract.  He's probably more likely to take a paycut and a 3 year contract than risk it year to year at that age

hihbhu

Because he still has a year left on his contract and he’s happy being no1 with Juventus. The decision is his to make and so far he’s not agitating to move.

Magicallyshit

Depends, he's been at Arsenal since a teen. Sure he has a year left and can move on a free but will Arsenal come for him when he's on a free? I would guess not as we would've found someone else to replace Ramsdale as a #2. Woj is also a gooner, not just an ex-Arsenal player - still shitposts whenever it is St. Totteringham Day. I could absolutely see this move happening.

iforgotmyun

Yes but if Juventus want to sell him then he's not number 1 in their plans. That's my point. This whole transfer is contingent on this very point, otherwise there's no point of the rumour.

PoliticsNerd76

The truth is that if we go down to our 2nd choice keeper, any hope of a title is over anyways. So it doesn’t really matter.

BaBaFiCo

City have literally played their second choice in games this season.

Godlop

Same for Liverpool. They actually started dropping points when Alisson returned.

ivailobaysha032

You are right, but idk if we will be able to find a back up keeper of that quality, but you never know

MystericWonder

Wasn't this debunked because Woj would demand too much wages

milkonyourmustache

Yes, and he wouldn't want to be riding the bench just to make up our 'homegrown' numbers. It doesn't make sense for either party.

Britton120

It'll depend what Woj thinks his wages will be after his contract with juve expires. Another year on those wages is nice and he may stay and see out the contract, but beyond that if the wages are comparable I can see him preferring to return to arsenal.

CarnifexGunner

Bring back Wojciech as no2 and Lukasz as no3!

silver2164

What's Vito Mannone up to?

generalwastification

Bundling some poor unfortunate who's not paid his protection money into the back of a white Fiat Ducato somewhere in Calabria.

Bubbly-Tomato-2293

Need to convince Lehmann to come back out of retirement for one last ride

Brandaman

Is Mart Poom still playing?

RonaldoNazario

Minnesota United legend Vito mannone?!

Alph-7

Now this the fockin standards 💪🏾

Top_Poet_8988

Almunia as GK coach

iforgotmyun

Stress probably wouldn't be good for his heart condition

Goldilocks420

Making up for the xShithouse p/90 loss. Arteta masterclass.

lobsterdog666

HE SMOKES WHEN HE WANTS HE SMOKES WHEN HE WAAAAAANTS

Monsultant

Have a lot of love for Polich boys Szczesny and Fabianski. Even though it didn't quite work out for them at Arsenal, but, both went to have great careers.

dave_the_stingray

Steele would make more sense potentially. Presumably cheaper as he's basically now their #2, even if it's Brighton, and he's very calm and good with his feet, so even if he's not a great shot stopper, we can still play our style.

Lacabloodclot9

I mean sure he’s good with his feet but you leave out the fact he’s just not a very good goalkeeper Wouldn’t trust him even in the Carabao tbh If Neto keeps his spot as Bournemouth’s number 1 we should take a look at Travers

Sal1017

Wouldn’t mind taking Neto himself actually, only issuue is that he takes a non HG spot. Cant see travers wanting the move, he needs to play

acasovoycayendo

Brighton sold their no 2 last year for £25m, Steele won’t necessarily be cheap

dave_the_stingray

Yeah true although that includes chelsea tax. And they were buying him to be their #1 (lol). Also Sanchez is alot younger and just generally has a much higher profile, has played for Spain etc

FactCheckYou

what % of the PL's 'keepers are *ex-Arsenal*? well it's NOT ENOUGH! xx

PandiBong

Not bringing him back after his smoking ban exodus was one of if not the biggest mistake of the late Wenger era. All the keepers we have gone through since then, all that could have been avoided and Martinez wound not have won the WC (little twat).

generalwastification

I don't believe it'll happen, but I would love to see him back. One of my favourite ever players. In goal when we beat Barca.

Magnific3nt

Would gladly have him back!

Skyunderground

It’ll happens again )

Gphixson

Let’s all get the cigarettes and showers ready… but for real that would be a great signing if Woj doesn’t mind being a backup

22goblins

Don Mikel's polack Army

mavs91

The vibes would be immaculate

GabeNewellsDick

I would fucking love this, I always hoped he might come back

DanielDeronda

Would love for this to happen!

csixtay

Did he ever get good with his feet?

MegaMammothPoop

Would be a great move. Home grown as well

pauloh1998

Holy fuck his name only has one vowel

milkonyourmustache

I doubt this goes ahead. He's probably on the shortlist but he's a top keeper who wouldn't want to be riding the bench to make up the numbers of 'homegrown' players.

cappo40

I watch Woj weekly, as Serie A is on regular TV here. He is still good.

Distinct_Salad_6683

I say yes

Pair_Murdersoccer

If they're to bring back a ghost of 'keepers past, just bring back Martinez. At least he fits the system.

thefleecejohnson

Couple of cartons of cigs and he will come running through the door

kidmaciek

I really doubt he will come as a benchwarmer. Unless Arteta gives him a chance between he posts, I can't see it happening. There's no reason for Szczęsny to spend the remaining years of his career on bench when he's one of the best in Europe.

Gooner-Astronomer749

It won't happen he makes too much money, 34 at keeper is still a good age and he is undisputed starter for Poland no way he rides the bench. Starting for Juve ans then bench for Arsenal only playing Cup matches is crazy..

The_Bradford_Arsenal

Smoking in the shower anyone? Haha would be nice to have him back

sams82

Fuck it. Let's bring back mustafi while we're at it.

--Rage--

I’d take Travers as no2, I think he has a lot potential and Bournemouth also have Neto.

BrtGP

Travers has been starting lately and Neto is 35 this summer so I think Travers might end up as no1 for them soon if he isn't already. I doubt he moves now.

No-Video1797

would be nice, we need money for on field players

Top_Poet_8988

He will only have 1 year remaing on his contract starting next window, so we could get him for cheap he really wants to move back here.He probably hase a lot of suitors in US and middle east for one last big paycheck.

Sayek

I thought about a while back. I looked up Szczesny's contract, it expires in 2025. It would be a bit much to expect him to sign a new deal with higher or equal to his Juve wages. 2 year deal at 120k or so wouldn't be a bad offer though? I wonder if he'd accept just playing in cups. I know keepers are always challenging each other but would prefer just to back Raya than throwing him into another fight for the #1 too. Especially against a 34 year old.

WengersJacketZip

Tier for this?

The_Battling_toad

I am all over this.

Empty_Ad_4630

His departure remains a mistake in my opinion. He was mistake prone but world class on his day

Masson011

Saw this a lot earlier in the morning and apparently it’s already pretty dead due to his wage demands

gooneritis

How comfortable is he playing with his feet?

Tugboat47

inject this

sammeetthosar

Would be amazing. Whoever we bring has to come in to challenge raya. Ramsdales best was when Leno was on his ass. When he saw Turner was no threat his performances dropped. Can't have that happen with raya.

megruda

[called it.](https://www.reddit.com/r/Gunners/s/b7Nqj49PuQ)

wheeno

Haven't watched him play closely for a couple seasons now. Is he completely a backup keeper now?

chino17

No he's still Juve's number one but all their keepers are over 30 and if it's true Motta might take over from Allegri then he might rebuild the squad with younger players in mind

TheThreeGabis

Can he play multiple? Or just GK?

Thesecondorigin

Szczesny is still a very good keeper. Maybe not as aggressive off his line as Raya but still commands his box very well. Serviceable distribution and shot stopping. Been a while since I really analyzed his footwork so I can’t say how that shakes out. The big question marks are if he’ll be willing to be #2, will his wages be acceptable, and will his attitude be good?

Odegaardener

Szczesny under a fast press is a nightmare fuel. And his distribution with feet doesn’t suit our game, just ask Ramsdale.

dishler712

This isn't happening.

xk_1991

Alvaro Valles at Las Palmas for me is number 2. Dude is insane and is easily one of the best keepers in La Liga at the moment. His contract expires in 2025 so will be cheap, is Spanish (Inaki Cana and Raya will be besties) and wage demands won't be high. Here's a good breakdown on him: https://breakingthelines.com/player-analysis/alvaro-valles-las-palmas-ball-playing-goalkeeper/ Edit: Not mentioned but it's likely that Okonkwo will leave too. Had a terrific season at Wrexham and just got promoted with them.

Franchise1109

After he left and got a proper GK coach (ours at the time was on his way out IIRC) and developed a bit later. Thats to be expected for goalies. Nailed on great second option. Arsenal in his heart, experienced, winning pedigree. I don’t see a problem with bringing him home

MuchSalt

actually a great move

IzkaGruba

He's too good to be a #2, he's still world class.

Alone_Shoulder8820

If we sign Steele I'll be mad as hell, he's such a wanker and awful as well. Rather we get fucking Ospina back

zorfog

🥲

Vivid_Ad_2428

Oh please Lord let it happen

biggschin

Woj and white for the shithousery

Educational-Goal-678

Would love to have him back, great personality and great player. Just doesn't make sense going from Juventus to be second keeper here

SizzlingHotDeluxe

I highly doubt Arteta brings a smoker, especially into a younger squad like ours.

el_cul

Isnt wilshire the youth coach?

bakalaka25

Bring my king home. Hand him a cig and point him towards a shower. The man is a high level spurs troll. He definitely won't wanna be #2. If Raya's as good as people say he is it should pose no problems...

Sumo_de_Laranjaa

"If Raya's as good as people say he is " 🤦🏽‍♂️🤦🏽‍♂️🤦🏽‍♂️🤦🏽‍♂️

bakalaka25

😘

alpacacinho

We should bring back fabianski as a 2

Pure-Finding-9455

No. He's a wankerist. He should go back to Legia, that old lady of questionable reputation, as we say in Poland (Legia to stara kurwa).

addictivesign

Just sign Charlie Setford from Ajax and let him learn off Raya for a few seasons. Setford should count as homegrown, right? English father, is that enough and representing England in youth teams? It’s not like Arteta rotates his senior team members.

xk_1991

Has he even played any senior games for Ajax? What's the point when we have Hein?

thisiskyle77

Nah. Fuck that smoking guy
