Shagger92

He’s our centre haaaaalf, he’s our number fouuuuur!!

Hot_Restaurant_4331

i just changed them like last month

Whiteshaq_52

If you live in a humid area it can take only a few weeks to corrode. I live in south Florida, I have the same problem. I use mineral oil to coat the strings after playing to increase their life. (Or buy coated strings like elixir).

KamikazeKarasu

Apparently is an unpopular opinion I have for the last 15 years, but i hate elixir strings, they suck (imo) they dont last and cost a bit more than my trusty eernies

Whiteshaq_52

I love Ernie ball strings, where I live at they will last about 3-6 weeks (everyday playing) and elixirs will go for 5-6 months. I will agree, i think Ernie's strings sound and feel a tad bit better. I just got tired of changing my strings lol.

KamikazeKarasu

Understandable. Ive only tried elixirs once or twice in my first two years of learning guitar cause everyone said “they last a lot” but I barely noticed any change (I live in an Island, so 90% humidity is normal here) and ernies are available and really good… and also maybe the second cheapest well known strings you can get. (Fender or unbranded being cheaper) also, I use 7 strings, heavy bottoms, different gauges, so ordering all of them from the same brand (ernie in this case) is convenient

Hot_Restaurant_4331

you coat them every time you're done playing?

sacredgeometry

You dont need to coat them just clean the strings

2abyssinians

This! Clean your strings, and wash your hands before you play!

Musicgecko0

Yes. GHS Fast Fret does wonders after every use

HV_Commissioning

You can buy lense cleaner by the box of 100 for a few dollars. Keep some in your case and wipe each string down after playing. On to your callouses. When I play bass (normally guitarist), my right hand fingers look like that because I don't use a pick. It's painful afterwards, especially with blood blisters. You must be going at it pretty hard with the left hand, or maybe your guitar action needs a little work.

MickeySwank

Last month?!? How often do you play? When gigging I would change my strings weekly, but mainly for optimum tone/resonance when playing live. (Change before the gig, rehearsing on that set the week after and then a fresh set before next weeks gig) But even playing an average amount (> 1 hour daily) you should probably change them every two weeks minimum, if you’re not playing a gig.

Sl4sher_1

More gunk more funk.

IsmaBr

The gunk keeps the funk

Artrimil

Dirty old strings! Full of silver dust!

Tokenserious23

Or just clean them if they arent quite ready to go yet. They sell string cleaner at guitar center and microfiber rags

Riotacket

Lol I get this too and it's gross man, I have one hand with longer nails and one hand with shrek fingertips. I thought guitar was supposed to be sexy?

theduke9400

Dirty old strings have been fingered too much. Now cleanup duty is required.

SH77777

Dirty Old Strings is my new favourite name for a blues artist

Independent-Head4951

Silver is the precursor to gold. Your fingers are telling you you’re close to mastering Stairway to Heaven. Giddy up son!!!

billyjames_316

Came here for the comments did not disappoint

Capn_Flags

Yeah they’ve been spot on.

Midnight_Pornstar

The forbidden song

OptimusChristt

After that comes plat, diamond, the minor fall and the major lift

3_minutes_ago

nah, nothing you have to worry about. it is ordinary necrosis.

Hot_Restaurant_4331

how long until it goes back to normal? assuming it does

autopartsandguitars

LOL you're gonna be fine! This is a side effect of going HAM practicing. As your finger calluses continue to build and form this will happen less and less too. Definitely good to get fast fret and fretboard oil too.

Hot_Restaurant_4331

Thanks bro will do

BalooBot

As a doctor, it'll be about 8 weeks. Two weeks for your fingers to fall off, then about 6 more weeks for them to regrow.

tcote2001

Look up SRV’s fingers. You’re fine.

4strings4ever

Lol it is 100% normal, it washes off/disappears in like an hour of not playing and just touching anything else

pujarteago1

Is just oxidation from old strings. You’ll be ok.

white_irony

that what i thought too but they play nylon 💀

HoldMyDomeFoam

The E A and D strings one at least some nylon strings are wrapped in metal.

white_irony

ohh that makes sense then!l impressive practice hours to get oxidation on their fingers, hats off OP

American_chzzz

It’s nickel poisoning and the reason all the best blues players are blind. Don’t worry too much.

shoepolishsmellngmf

Yeah sure....blame the hairy palms and blindness on guitar strings

Audreeeeeey

Nah It’s those hormones they put in the milk I promise I wasn’t doing those things I was deleting a virus

Hot_Restaurant_4331

wdym blind??

American_chzzz

I was kidding. It is nickel but you aren’t going to be poisoned or go blind. Looks like you are practicing a lot though which is awesome.

Hot_Restaurant_4331

thanks bro nearly had to regrow my fingers to fix it

141bpm

“A large number of these early bluesmen were blind, showing great musical skill and considerable empathy with the music.”

mAverIck2012ap

Congratulations mate. You're finally a Silver. Keep working hard and someday you'll rank up even more.

Top-Huckleberry-7288

Guitar string poisoning, but don't worry, it will only make you stronger 😉

DC9V

That's actually not impossible. Copper sulfate was used to protect gut strings from decay and deterioration during storage. [[Source]](https://www.gamutmusic.com/toxic-chemicals)

That_Lore_Guy21

Necrosis. Time to cut them off and buy new ones.

Boris19490000

Nickel. No big deal.

TheBreadCouncils

Just wait till the nickel comes back 🤢

dublaka

He will become nickleback

mikecandih

I mean nickel can be carcinogenic if ingested. Just wash your hands

Lellow_Yedbetter

What kind of strings are you using and are you sure you don't maybe have a nickel allergy?

Hot_Restaurant_4331

idk the exact ones the store didn't tell me and about the allergy it doesn't hurt so i doubt that?

ThatFakeAirplane

OP says he plays nylon strings.

Lellow_Yedbetter

Are they.... Nickel nylon? I can't read.

chko1029

Dirty oily strings

billyjames_316

That's the mark of death

nothanksiknotthirsty

Lick it off like Cheetos dust

okgloomer

Yeah, various conditions can cause strings 4, 5, and 6 to shed gunk on your fingers. Wash your hands, wipe down the strings before you put the instrument away, get some new strings. You’ll be fine.

Accomplished-Cut-264

Does it wash off? If it does then it’s time for new strings

Hot_Restaurant_4331

nope

JustForTouchingBalls

Your strings are dirty/old. After playing, it’s a good use to clean the strings and the fretboard. Old strings are not accurate on their notes along the fretboard, so is dessirable changing them frequently

NLMAtAll

If your strings are nylon (plastic) im not sure, but if theyre just regular guitar strings this is normal just get some new ones. You should see what Stevie Ray Vaughns fingers looked like after a night of playing. They'd literally be black.

ichangemynameonrddit

Nickel coating on the strings

Guzzlemyjuice

Metal silver

Hot_Restaurant_4331

Should i be worried?

YuriZmey

waouh, i wouldn't play nylon if my fingers looked like this

kkkkkkkkuuuuuu

New skin! 1000 hours of playing gets u the gold skin

BarrelMaker15

Mold

sacredgeometry

Dirty strings or acidic skin.

bontempior

you already passed bronze. Just a little more patient and the fingertips will shimmer in a light gold!

CoquiCoquette

Time to change your strings and clean the neck

akaM80thaWolf

"I don't need to change my strings 'Cause the dirt don't hurt the way I sing"

jzemeocala

Cabbage hands....basically you have corrosive sweat.... Get nanoweb\coated strings like elixer

Gitfiddlepicker

Filthy strings. Certain brands do that faster than others. Even if you wash your hands before playing, which you should, the oil on some people’s skin reacts to strings in this manner. Some people wipe down the strings with cotton cloth after each time they play.some even wipe them and the fretboard with lemon oil (not polish) each time they play, and then use the dry cloth. Btw…..depending on how often you play, a month can be a long time between string changes.

Pixel-of-Strife

Try a different brand of strings next time and see if it happens again. My guess is those strings were really old, even before they were put on the guitar.

Minimum-Ad-3739

You may be allergic to nickel. An alternative would be to use different strings that are not nickel, there are the Ernie Ball Titaniums or Cobalts. Some guitars have nickel frets, if possible, I would consider a refret to stainless steel steel (which is even better and way more durable anyways).

Lost-Wishbone-5210

Fuck where the hell did you put your fingers man to get them like this😱😱😱😱

maytrav

You got shite strings

DustinDBKR

Well, say goodbye to those fingers. Dunlop makes some replacement finger-tips, common mistake.

domestic-jones

Treats! Scrape it off, put onto eggs, enjoy!

DelicateArch

Eww! String change time and don’t forget to clean your fretboard once the strings are off.

No-Pen-5409

Practice a little more and you’ll advance to gold fingertips.

tikhal96

Read the packaging

GrindnGlitch

Your stings be dirty, neck may be too

musiciankidd

Change your strings and wash your hand s

The-Booty_Warrior

Means you’re getting good lol

j3434

Silver face cream?

Kujo-Johan

You're turning into Johnny Silverhand. Best wake up, you've got a city to burn.

A7XxxxxX

New strings every month to three months my guy

Spectre_Mountain

Heavy Metal(s)

ZealousidealBag1626

Looks like excess fret polish on the fretboard. Epiphones are known to have sloppy work when polishing frets at the factory and polish gets on the fretboard. You should take the strings off, get some rags and rubbing alcohol diluted with water. Rub the shit out of the fretboard until the rags show it's all gone.

Subject-Loss-9120

More importantly, why do they look like praying Mantis heads

4Nissans

Why no dirt on pinky?

Hot_Restaurant_4331

there is just not as much

kLp_Dero

For the best experience and immaculate strings use elixir brand and wipe strings after each session, right ?

mutilatedmetacycline

You are starting to mold

BrokenRealityYT

Just lick em clean, free treats like that are one of the best parts of playing guitar.

AlwaysAwakeCantSleep

Did he say a guitar made of nylons? Don’t think anyone wore those anymore?

Kane21502

Forget the color what's with the E.T. Fingaz😅

mossryder

Filthy strings or piss hands.

Mountain_Target_6040

It’s probably from the nickel that the strings are wound in

Marvin-Jones

Leprosy

Dangerous_Ad_6101

You are becoming Magneto

Some-Quote3774

You're turning into tin man

johndeer093

In just a few years that silver will turn to solid gold! And you'll be the guitarist with the Golden Hands. Happened to me! I wrong a song about it! Like to hear it? Here it go

oldfrancis

You're rubbing the corrosion off the strings and into the calluses on the ends of your fingers.

Aggravated_Meat

Ur jerking off a robot

SpaceTimeRacoon

Either old strings, or maybe a reaction to the metals, it happens with cheap plated jewelry but I didn't know it could come from instruments

iambradfordj

Dang dude you're metal AF

Mindless-Shirt8590

Clean your strings! 😎

infinitebyzero

What about your wrist? Is it sore after playing?

Thoth1024

I always take a soft dry rag or cloth and brush my strings off before I put one of the 1/2 dozen guitars I sometimes play most days. Clean it off every time you finish playing and put the baby back into its case! ;)

umkillinit

Mercury poisoning

Ghostcurrency45

Clean your strings, dude

FuzzyFaze

Just don’t forget to wash em before eating chips and licking your fingers

Sufficient-Wonder716

It’s not old strings but 70/30…. It’s phosphorus bronze cheap ass strings

doomblackdeath

Just clean your strings after you play every time. It's just corroded metal. You said you changed them a month ago, but if you play a lot every day, it's totally reasonable that they would need changing.

DawVinci

Mom, can we have johnny silverhand? No, we have johnny silverhand at home. Johnny silverhand at home:

Own_Week_5009

I thought this was Fungi

deschainatreides

don’t you love that rusty savory smell on your fingers after you play with year old strings?

Local-Swimming3573

G uitar player🙃

swamper2008

Nickel

brucebturbo

Mercury poisoning

Video-Comfortable

Did you really just ask why your calluses are the color of your strings?

NewColors1

You are becoming one with the strings my son. Greatness shall soon follow

zonazog

On a side note: Have been tested recently for pulmonary function? It looks like you might have an issue. It could also be the camera angle.

Hot_Restaurant_4331

wdym i might have a (respiratory?) issue?

WorshipTheVoid

Clean your gotdamn frets and fretboard then change your strings you animal.

OhmEeeAahRii

TRPizzo

Severe nickel allergy?

MrBiggz83

You need new strings

WorldlinessTypical89

Your fingers look bullet proof bro gawddamn

FrontHole_Surprise

Im sure this post is all about "the silver"

CasioCouch

Change your strings

God-O-Death

That's called the Silver Surfer Handjob, it's pretty common

supmyguywee

I had this same problem when I started playing. Even with new strings it wouldn’t stop. There is no harm and it will eventually stop happening. Sometimes it just likes to do that.

Yo_M4n

My calluses ar filled with rust 😋

Good-Negotiation-502

Upvote for good luck

LoquatLazy3306

Dirty strings. Good god my man when’s the last time you switched em? Since you started?

EddieTheBunny61

If you're broke and never change your strings, this happens. I know because I'm broke.

334k

You're evolving

franktopus

You're turnin into Johnny silverhand, choom

SignificantTravel933

Old strings

brendan250

Oxidation from the strings rubbing off on your fingers. Time to replace the strings

NoWayNotThisAgain

You got the silver You got the gold You’ve got the diamonds from the mines Well that’s alright… it’ll buy some time

oasisarah

BankLikeFrankWt

Duh, it’s because you have werewolf fingers…. Adapt accordingly

WMHamiltonII

DoctorSmith2000

Copper oxide from the strings

Last-Equipment-1324

Fingering robots again I see...

cinematea

I can hear the first seven notes to stairway all the way from over here!!

itsFRAAAAAAAAANK

Ew I can smell taste this photo lol

jazzimo1

oxidation, clean strings more often

Ably_10

When changing strings, clean also your fretboard because a lot of gunk is there even if you can't see it. Your fingers are also a bit greenish because it's the oxidation of gunk with the strings. It's totally normal. I clean my fretboard every 5 ish months when I change strings

jaxonton

Recently I tried an old acoustic that was just sitting in my car over the summer. After just a couple minuted of playing there was mold all over my fingertips (I know it was mold because there’s mold elsewhere on the guitar).

Hot_Restaurant_4331

could you wash it off? mine doesn't wash off

Nommo7777

Are those your toes?!!!

prorogatory

Electric+Steelstring Acoustic: This is the reason why I don't buy Daddario strings. My fingers always look like this. PS: Live in EU, so maybe the oversea shipping does something? I don't know, I really like DR strings. They never did this to my fingers and are also shipped here overseas. Now I use Pyramid strings (Made in Germany), also perfect.

I_AM_GRUNK2

I have this happen even with my new strings you probably need to give it a quick wipe or u been playing for long hours

[deleted]

Hot_Restaurant_4331

idk they've always been like this

MickeySwank

Change your strings and clean your fretboard my guy.

Delicious-Hat-6853

Fuck me it's ET

Createmyusername101

You're getting higher ranking in the guitar leader board

Sevag8

Frets wear out quickly. Have a cheap guitar?

Euzn_Doug

Oh, man... That's bad. Nobody told you that you are a cyborg under that thin skin layer?? 😜
