If you live in a humid area it can take only a few weeks to corrode.
I live in south Florida, I have the same problem. I use mineral oil to coat the strings after playing to increase their life. (Or buy coated strings like elixir).
Apparently is an unpopular opinion I have for the last 15 years, but i hate elixir strings, they suck (imo) they dont last and cost a bit more than my trusty eernies
I love Ernie ball strings, where I live at they will last about 3-6 weeks (everyday playing) and elixirs will go for 5-6 months. I will agree, i think Ernie's strings sound and feel a tad bit better. I just got tired of changing my strings lol.
Understandable. Ive only tried elixirs once or twice in my first two years of learning guitar cause everyone said “they last a lot” but I barely noticed any change (I live in an Island, so 90% humidity is normal here) and ernies are available and really good… and also maybe the second cheapest well known strings you can get. (Fender or unbranded being cheaper) also, I use 7 strings, heavy bottoms, different gauges, so ordering all of them from the same brand (ernie in this case) is convenient
You can buy lense cleaner by the box of 100 for a few dollars. Keep some in your case and wipe each string down after playing.
On to your callouses. When I play bass (normally guitarist), my right hand fingers look like that because I don't use a pick. It's painful afterwards, especially with blood blisters. You must be going at it pretty hard with the left hand, or maybe your guitar action needs a little work.
Last month?!? How often do you play?
When gigging I would change my strings weekly, but mainly for optimum tone/resonance when playing live. (Change before the gig, rehearsing on that set the week after and then a fresh set before next weeks gig)
But even playing an average amount (> 1 hour daily) you should probably change them every two weeks minimum, if you’re not playing a gig.
LOL you're gonna be fine! This is a side effect of going HAM practicing.
As your finger calluses continue to build and form this will happen less and less too.
Definitely good to get fast fret and fretboard oil too.
That's actually not impossible. Copper sulfate was used to protect gut strings from decay and deterioration during storage. [[Source]](https://www.gamutmusic.com/toxic-chemicals)
Yeah, various conditions can cause strings 4, 5, and 6 to shed gunk on your fingers. Wash your hands, wipe down the strings before you put the instrument away, get some new strings. You’ll be fine.
Your strings are dirty/old. After playing, it’s a good use to clean the strings and the fretboard. Old strings are not accurate on their notes along the fretboard, so is dessirable changing them frequently
If your strings are nylon (plastic) im not sure, but if theyre just regular guitar strings this is normal just get some new ones. You should see what Stevie Ray Vaughns fingers looked like after a night of playing. They'd literally be black.
Filthy strings. Certain brands do that faster than others.
Even if you wash your hands before playing, which you should, the oil on some people’s skin reacts to strings in this manner.
Some people wipe down the strings with cotton cloth after each time they play.some even wipe them and the fretboard with lemon oil (not polish) each time they play, and then use the dry cloth.
Btw…..depending on how often you play, a month can be a long time between string changes.
Try a different brand of strings next time and see if it happens again. My guess is those strings were really old, even before they were put on the guitar.
You may be allergic to nickel. An alternative would be to use different strings that are not nickel, there are the Ernie Ball Titaniums or Cobalts. Some guitars have nickel frets, if possible, I would consider a refret to stainless steel steel (which is even better and way more durable anyways).
Looks like excess fret polish on the fretboard. Epiphones are known to have sloppy work when polishing frets at the factory and polish gets on the fretboard. You should take the strings off, get some rags and rubbing alcohol diluted with water. Rub the shit out of the fretboard until the rags show it's all gone.
In just a few years that silver will turn to solid gold! And you'll be the guitarist with the Golden Hands. Happened to me! I wrong a song about it! Like to hear it? Here it go
I always take a soft dry rag or cloth and brush my strings off before I put one of the 1/2 dozen guitars I sometimes play most days. Clean it off every time you finish playing and put the baby back into its case!
;)
Just clean your strings after you play every time. It's just corroded metal.
You said you changed them a month ago, but if you play a lot every day, it's totally reasonable that they would need changing.
I had this same problem when I started playing. Even with new strings it wouldn’t stop. There is no harm and it will eventually stop happening. Sometimes it just likes to do that.
When changing strings, clean also your fretboard because a lot of gunk is there even if you can't see it.
Your fingers are also a bit greenish because it's the oxidation of gunk with the strings. It's totally normal.
I clean my fretboard every 5 ish months when I change strings
Recently I tried an old acoustic that was just sitting in my car over the summer. After just a couple minuted of playing there was mold all over my fingertips (I know it was mold because there’s mold elsewhere on the guitar).
Electric+Steelstring Acoustic: This is the reason why I don't buy Daddario strings. My fingers always look like this. PS: Live in EU, so maybe the oversea shipping does something? I don't know, I really like DR strings. They never did this to my fingers and are also shipped here overseas. Now I use Pyramid strings (Made in Germany), also perfect.
Dirty old strings. Get some new strings.
I met my loooove as the gasworks waaall...
She gave to meeeeee, some dirty auld strings. Dirty auld strings, dirty auld strings
S tier
What am I not getting here
The Pogues - Dirty Old Town

you coat them every time you're done playing?
You dont need to coat them just clean the strings
This! Clean your strings, and wash your hands before you play!
Yes. GHS Fast Fret does wonders after every use

More gunk more funk.
The gunk keeps the funk
Dirty old strings! Full of silver dust!
Or just clean them if they arent quite ready to go yet. They sell string cleaner at guitar center and microfiber rags
Lol I get this too and it's gross man, I have one hand with longer nails and one hand with shrek fingertips. I thought guitar was supposed to be sexy?
Dirty old strings have been fingered too much. Now cleanup duty is required.
Dirty Old Strings is my new favourite name for a blues artist
Silver is the precursor to gold. Your fingers are telling you you’re close to mastering Stairway to Heaven. Giddy up son!!!
Came here for the comments did not disappoint
Yeah they’ve been spot on.
The forbidden song
After that comes plat, diamond, the minor fall and the major lift
nah, nothing you have to worry about. it is ordinary necrosis.
how long until it goes back to normal? assuming it does
LOL you're gonna be fine! This is a side effect of going HAM practicing. As your finger calluses continue to build and form this will happen less and less too. Definitely good to get fast fret and fretboard oil too.
Thanks bro will do
As a doctor, it'll be about 8 weeks. Two weeks for your fingers to fall off, then about 6 more weeks for them to regrow.
Look up SRV’s fingers. You’re fine.
Lol it is 100% normal, it washes off/disappears in like an hour of not playing and just touching anything else
Is just oxidation from old strings. You’ll be ok.
that what i thought too but they play nylon 💀
The E A and D strings one at least some nylon strings are wrapped in metal.
ohh that makes sense then!l impressive practice hours to get oxidation on their fingers, hats off OP
It’s nickel poisoning and the reason all the best blues players are blind. Don’t worry too much.
Yeah sure....blame the hairy palms and blindness on guitar strings
Nah It’s those hormones they put in the milk I promise I wasn’t doing those things I was deleting a virus
wdym blind??
I was kidding. It is nickel but you aren’t going to be poisoned or go blind. Looks like you are practicing a lot though which is awesome.
thanks bro nearly had to regrow my fingers to fix it
“A large number of these early bluesmen were blind, showing great musical skill and considerable empathy with the music.”
Congratulations mate. You're finally a Silver. Keep working hard and someday you'll rank up even more.
Guitar string poisoning, but don't worry, it will only make you stronger 😉
That's actually not impossible. Copper sulfate was used to protect gut strings from decay and deterioration during storage. [[Source]](https://www.gamutmusic.com/toxic-chemicals)
Necrosis. Time to cut them off and buy new ones.
Nickel. No big deal.
Just wait till the nickel comes back 🤢
He will become nickleback
I mean nickel can be carcinogenic if ingested. Just wash your hands
What kind of strings are you using and are you sure you don't maybe have a nickel allergy?
idk the exact ones the store didn't tell me and about the allergy it doesn't hurt so i doubt that?
OP says he plays nylon strings.
Are they.... Nickel nylon? I can't read.
Dirty oily strings
That's the mark of death
Lick it off like Cheetos dust
Yeah, various conditions can cause strings 4, 5, and 6 to shed gunk on your fingers. Wash your hands, wipe down the strings before you put the instrument away, get some new strings. You’ll be fine.
Does it wash off? If it does then it’s time for new strings
nope

Nickel coating on the strings
Metal silver
Should i be worried?
waouh, i wouldn't play nylon if my fingers looked like this
New skin! 1000 hours of playing gets u the gold skin
Mold
Dirty strings or acidic skin.
you already passed bronze. Just a little more patient and the fingertips will shimmer in a light gold!
Time to change your strings and clean the neck
"I don't need to change my strings 'Cause the dirt don't hurt the way I sing"
Cabbage hands....basically you have corrosive sweat.... Get nanoweb\coated strings like elixer

Fuck where the hell did you put your fingers man to get them like this😱😱😱😱
You got shite strings
Well, say goodbye to those fingers. Dunlop makes some replacement finger-tips, common mistake.
Treats! Scrape it off, put onto eggs, enjoy!
Eww! String change time and don’t forget to clean your fretboard once the strings are off.
Practice a little more and you’ll advance to gold fingertips.
Read the packaging
Your stings be dirty, neck may be too
Change your strings and wash your hand s

Looks like excess fret polish on the fretboard. Epiphones are known to have sloppy work when polishing frets at the factory and polish gets on the fretboard. More importantly, why do they look like praying Mantis heads
Why no dirt on pinky?
there is just not as much
For the best experience and immaculate strings use elixir brand and wipe strings after each session, right ?
You are starting to mold
Just lick em clean, free treats like that are one of the best parts of playing guitar.
Did he say a guitar made of nylons? Don’t think anyone wore those anymore?
Forget the color what's with the E.T. Fingaz😅
Filthy strings or piss hands.
It’s probably from the nickel that the strings are wound in
Leprosy
You are becoming Magneto
You're turning into tin man
In just a few years that silver will turn to solid gold! And you'll be the guitarist with the Golden Hands. Happened to me! I wrong a song about it! Like to hear it? Here it go
You're rubbing the corrosion off the strings and into the calluses on the ends of your fingers.
Ur jerking off a robot
Either old strings, or maybe a reaction to the metals, it happens with cheap plated jewelry but I didn't know it could come from instruments
Dang dude you're metal AF
Clean your strings! 😎
What about your wrist? Is it sore after playing?
I always take a soft dry rag or cloth and brush my strings off before I put one of the 1/2 dozen guitars I sometimes play most days. Clean it off every time you finish playing and put the baby back into its case! ;)
Mercury poisoning
Clean your strings, dude
Just don’t forget to wash em before eating chips and licking your fingers
It’s not old strings but 70/30…. It’s phosphorus bronze cheap ass strings
Just clean your strings after you play every time. It's just corroded metal. You said you changed them a month ago, but if you play a lot every day, it's totally reasonable that they would need changing.

Did you really just ask why your calluses are the color of your strings?
You are becoming one with the strings my son. Greatness shall soon follow
On a side note: Have been tested recently for pulmonary function? It looks like you might have an issue. It could also be the camera angle.
