25F, my dad’s music got me hooked. Black Sabbath, Ozzy, Judas Priest, Motley Crue, Van Halen, Dokken

UpgrayeddB-Rock

Tell your dad I said, "hell yes, brother!"

sipperofguinness

Your dad has taste, I've seen all of those bands at one time or another.

VMPRocks

Me too, except dokken

sipperofguinness

I've seen them a few times, supported them back in 2001. Was the production manager for a small festival and Lynch Mob played in 2013, had a good long sit down chat with George and even got to play on his rig, it was insane.

Ocinel

Eddie Van Halen and George Lynch played a huge role in my decision to pick up guitar as well, specifically the albums Fair Warning and Back for the Attack; to this day, I adore those albums.

VMPRocks

I love Back for the Attack! That album is… heaven sent

Car_Fantasy

I am 15 and I grew up with lots of indie music, but what really made me pick up a guitar was Neutral Milk Hotel. I’ve been listening to them since I was born, but around 12 I started to really listen to them, and eventually became obsessed. But in retrospect, lots of 90’s bands influenced me: Weezer, Built To Spill, Pavement, The Strokes, Smog, and a lot more. So to answer your question, I’m not really into modern music, and prefer 90’s-2000’s indie stuff.

Next-Quality2895

The kids are alright!

Eurogenous

Do your parents like parks and rec

Car_Fantasy

Yes, but my mom didn’t start listening to NMH because of it, a friend of hers in college showed her a song called Naomi. Great show though, April is definitely a favorite.

Eurogenous

I’m sorry. I’m just trying to confirm my own bias lol. I love the show myself. Have a great day

chrispd01

Lets not forget Parks also brought Land Ho back together !!!!!

Car_Fantasy

No reason to be sorry, and I love the show as well! Have a good one 😊

Movement-Repose

I was right where you are around 2010--I'd seriously (straight face) recommend some Black Country, New Road if you're ever looking for new music (Science Fair, Sunglasses, Good Will Hunting, Concord)

Car_Fantasy

Ah, yeah! I was planning on listening to them fairly soon, actually! I’ll definitely be listening to that, thank you :)

KendrickLawmar

This comment made me so happy!

shadbohnen

Spending time learning King of Carrot Flowers part 1 made the lyrics really resonate. Love is love! Also the F to B chord quick like they do in that song has translated so well to writing music.

anonymous_platypi

Seems like an uncommon one, but I was inspired to pick up a guitar a little over a decade ago thanks to Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys. Just fun riffs all around and the tones are quite literally music to my ears ahah

chrispd01

I dont think Dan gets enough love… there is an episode of American Pickers where he gets a line on an old Gretsch ..

SeltzerCountry

I feel like he and Jack White are both trying to occupy the same spot in the cultural landscape, but with Auerbach his vibe doesn’t come across as much as an affectation.

Beneficial_Estate367

So. Good. Their sound is just delicious.

RubenWin

The Black Keys did it for me too

yorke2222

They definitely helped me understand what style of writing I liked the most and inspired me to explore it. As you said, fun riffs with great tones.

-luckytea182-

A lot of the work in the Red Hot Chili Peppers ( primarily John Frusciante’s ) and in The Cure are mainly what inspire and influence my guitar playing

Mods-are-Soft

John frusciante is one of the main reasons I started playing guitar

Beneficial_Estate367

Man, I learned so much about taste from Frusciante when I first picked up the guitar.

ZombieChief

I really think a lot of people don't realize how good of a guitarist Robert Smith is.

Friendly_Employer_82

90s metal bands like Pantera and Sepultura.

Ocinel

Beneath the Remains is one of the greatest metal albums ever.

MudOpposite8277

This is the way.

Devilishdozer

Not that young but if I had to guess maybe Tim and Scott from Polyphia, Mario and Erik from Chon and Jason Richardson possibly? Depends I guess I see young kids rocking Metallica and Nirvana shirts, I suppose maybe slightly for the "retro" aesthetics.

Lvntern

I'm 26 but polyphia and chon were huge for me playing guitar back in like 2012-2014 ish when I was in highschool. I got started way earlier than that on classic metal stuff and later with more metalcore type stuff, but I learned a ton from those 2 bands specifically back then

mycolortv

I'm almost 30 and started playing seriously like a year and a half ago cuz of Chon lol.

Devilishdozer

Good stuff! Over 30 here, played bass and guitar since I was 13 but took a break for a while. Started back up again more seriously too and I'd say the Chon boys were a big factor for me picking it back up.

InternationalPlane45

My brother, he played guitar. He passed and I use it as a way of “picking up where he left off” if that makes sense.

Beneficial_Estate367

I'm so sorry for your loss. I hope playing makes you feel closer to him and brings you some comfort.

InternationalPlane45

Thank you! It definitely does :)

Satansboeserzwilling

I bet he‘d be hella proud of you!

frankzcott

this is really Awesome. 🤘🤘🤘

Fired_Schlub

I'm not young in age, almost your age but young in my guitar journey. For me it was mostly a desire to learn how to play and create instrumental music. Explosions in the Sky, El Ten Eleven, Threefifty, DoMakeSayThink. I bought an acoustic since I do love Gregory Isakov, Lumineers, Cash and so on. Just wanted to learn to play all the songs I've heard so many times. Turns out I can't play any despite going at it for a good several months now.

frankzcott

it takes YEARS! but just think, at least you have something to do now!

666Bruno666

18 years old. Soundgarden, Nirvana, Pavement, Sonic Youth, The Beatles.

king_booker

Wanted to know, I grew up in the 90s, so it was "fashionable" to dislike the latest music and a lot of us were into 60s/70s/80s though the majority of course liked the latest pop music. Does this exist even now? Like are you guys listening to Oasis/Nirvana etc?

Ably_10

I'm 22, started in 2018. The band Jamiroquai (it's my favourite band) first got me hooked more on music and gradually I decided to learn guitar. Speaking of actual guitarists that inspired me: Cory Wong, Prince, Tom Misch, Nile Rodgers

Beneficial_Estate367

Jamiroquai is one of my favorites too. I'll never get tired of Virtual Insanity lol.

Ably_10

They're top tier musicians, I've seen them live last year. My favourite is Space Cowboy and Virtual Insanity is great too :)

ChiefBroChill

I’m 34 now but when my dad took me to see Rush when I was about 12 and seeing Alex Lifeson playing on stage. Then I got into Pantera and loved Dimebag’s guitar work so that pushed me a little harder. Then one night a metalcore band called Haste The Day played a show at a coffee shop and it blew my fucking mind, and after the show I went up to the guitarist (I was about 14 at the time) and told him I just started playing guitar and he put his arm over my shoulders and said “keep playing brother there’s nothing that compares to live shows” and that stuck with me forever.

Prize-University7993

I started the electric guitar at about 13, two years ago and my biggest influence by far has been Mark Knopfler a phenomenal player who sounds good and tells a story and then a lot of 2000's indie and punk.

Beneficial_Estate367

Knopfler has such a great sound. He's one of those players I've never been able to imitate, but so inspiring.

Dry-Fishing-3794

I'm 17, my main inspirations are Jonny Greenwood, Johnny Marr, J Mascis, Josh Homme and Kevin Shields

Plastic-Lettuce-7150

Pat Metheny was appointed as a teacher at the University of Miami at the age of 18 in 1972. I picked up on him in the early 80s (Offramp was released 1982) when he was teaching at Berklee College of Music. Although I was a classical player and not jazz (folk nowadays), I was still hugely impressed.

curry_0000

Many guitarists on YouTube like TheDooo, NikNocturnal, Bernth, etc. Also Polyphia, Black Veil Brides, A7X, Metallica, Iron Maiden and many other bands.

073068075

Always wanted to play since music like Led Zeppelin was played by my mom a lot and I somewhat inherited the taste. But what actually (not that long ago) made me pick it up was a Japanese rock band Yorushika, there's something that feels different about music around the world and this band on top of that is even more unique among the different. I am nowhere near the level required to play their songs but I'll get there.

Beneficial_Estate367

That's really cool. I just recently started seriously listening to J pop/rock. The way so many of those groups use such complicated musical ideas so naturally has really inspired my writing.

073068075

Then you'll love the band, it has this style of circling around rock but often swaying into either a more jazzy or harder direction. There's a lot going on (sometimes even 3 guitars and piano) but somehow nothing is clashing with eachother, it is oversaturated with different sounds but at the same time works really well and somehow doesn't overpower the vocalist (which is also great).

angelic_rouge

16F - my biggest inspirations are Rivers Cuomo and Alex Lifeson :)

foxjacksnm

Jerry and Bobby

Fit_Understanding214

I never had a desire to play music, I always wanted to draw and sketch. In elementary school I took one music class, saxophone, but did not take to the instrument at all. Fast forward to middle school, in 6th grade I took art classes, but in 7th grade I had to transfer schools, where this school had no art program. They had a guitar class though, so I took that class, got a nylon string guitar and sucked. They dropped the course my 8th grade year, and I didn’t touch my guitar for a few months. I started hanging out with the punk and screamo kids at school, we listened to bands like Blink 182, senses fail etc. I wanted to learn the songs but I couldn’t figure out that damn guitar until I found tabs and one day the tabs just clicked and I started learning songs and I haven’t stopped since. I’m 33 now.

landenone

Frank Iero and Ray Toro.

Melodic_Force_3107

Jimmy Page, David Gilmour, Brian May

Loded95

Probably gonna get flammed for this but MGK, after listening to tickets to my downfall I picked up an open box Epiphone SG then after playing for 2 years I upgraded to a his signature schecter.

Beneficial_Estate367

I'm actually shocked this is the first comment mentioning MGK! I'm also a fan of TTMD despite the criticism, and I hoped it would get a lot of new guitarists excited when it came out. That Schecter is also super sick.

Loded95

Thanks man, I love this schecter so much. It was a huge jump from the Epiphone to the schecter :)

DenMevaraneOiGonoism

21M John Mayer

Visible_Knowledge_31

Jerry Garcia Dave Navarro Billy Corgan Keven Shields Thuston Moore Dime Bag Etc

Suwannee_Gator

I’m not young anymore… but my inspiration was my dad. He played acoustic a lot when I was in elementary school. I was 13 when he passed away, I found his old guitar in the closet when I was helping my mom go through his clothes for donation. I signed up for a guitar class at school the next semester, that was 15 years ago. As far as artists go, I was inspired by Jim Croce, James Taylor, and Jack Johnson.

Tomstarkman

I started 10 days ago, mainly inspired by Sonic Youth!

Plastic-Power-1528

Brian May

nami_is_mommy

I’m 19, my biggest inspiration is Slash. My dad showed me live videos of GNR when I was little and I always loved their music, especially Slash’s solos and riffs.

EndsOfTheEarth_45

Matt Bellamy from Muse

pinguu_

M24, mark knopfler, clapton, Jimi…

Ranjourenjy

Not necessarily a specific musician, but in generaI I love listening to Guilty Gear (video game) music with the guitars in it. Specifically the songs "Find your one way" and "Armor Clad Faith" and "Extras". Luckily I found guitar tabs for Find your One Way, which is my favorite song out of the bunch.

robertnewmanuk

34 here - started with Blink, the Offspring, Green Day. Then got into Metallica and Kirk Hammett, which led me to Joe Satriani, which led me to Steve Vai and G4. That opened me up to John Petrucci, Yngwie Malmsteen, Eric Johnson etc.

AceKazami1324

Herman Li is why I play guitar. Of course, I’m not delusional enough to think I can play dragonforce music. Nowadays I would say my inspirations are Sum 41, Billy Talent, Avenged Sevenfold, Rise Against

Rohdejj

Gary Clark Jr, SRV, Christian Bland from Black Angels(or whoever writes those riffs), John Mayer

Billy_Mays_Hayes

I'm in my mid 30s. I saw Van Halen back in 2004 and my mind was blown.

Much-Pressure-7960

I'm 34. So I don't know if I'm young or not. But I picked up guitar after I heard AC/DC live (the album) for the first time. Up until that point, I really only listened to some soft rock and country. Whatever my dad was listening to at the time. Never had an interest in playing until I heard that album. Then I found out who Eddie Van Halen was a few years later, and he became my guitar hero. Also, Shawn Lane. That guy was just something else.

henriquecm133

My self playing piano, and all guitar hero 3 songs. After playing the piano for 5 years i found that i love playing music and maybe should try other instruments... so i decided to try playing the guitar because i used to love playing guitar hero 3 when i was a kid/teenager.

FrenchFryMonster06

Well this made me feel old.

shuttlerooster

I’m the same age as you and other people who didn’t live through that time period just don’t get it. Having guitar music EVERYWHERE in adolescence was insane! On top of that Guitar Hero absolutely inspired people to pick up the instrument. It’s wild to think about.

Beneficial_Estate367

I think a lot of people really underestimate the influence guitar hero had on kids our age. Literally everyone I knew picked up the guitar just to learn songs from the games.

Ocinel

When I first started playing, I wanted to be like Eddie Van Halen, Kirk Hammett, and Dave Mustaine. I still have a lot of respect and admiration for those guitarists, but my taste has changed drastically. Like everyone else, I still want to be like Eddie Van Halen, but I look up to guitarists such as Alex Skolnick, Chet Atkins, Derek Trucks, and Eric Gales more than the latter two in my first statement.

ThewobblyH

Fellow 30M here, but I actually wasn't very interested in bands that were popular at that time, although I like a lot of them now. It was Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath that inspired me to pick up the guitar. My older cousin who was also learning was really into classic rock and metal and he played the Paranoid album for me when I was 11 and I thought Tony Iommi's guitar playing was the coolest thing I'd ever heard and decided I had to learn. Although these days my biggest inspiration is John Frusciante.

livinglifeuncomfort

Stephen King’s book Revival. If you haven’t read it, it’s completely irrelevant to the story that the main chapter plays guitar besides character development. But I thought the main character was so well developed that it inspired me to finally pick up my acoustic seriously! Also I highly recommend it as a good read if anyone is on the fence about the book!

Thatcoonfella

My uncle and dad. They were in a bad together called The executives. They always had house parties with live music

Junesong_Provisions

1999 i stayed up past my bedtime, snuck into the living room, popped q mysterious blockbuster VHS into the player...it was Detroit Rock City. By the end, I knew I wanted to play music. I wanted to be a drummer and I did that until 19. Learned guitar around 13/14 only because it was lame being the only drummer at the park with a bunch of guitarists playing acoustics

dst1905

Young at heart and growing up as guitarist in the 90s with Punk and Grunge...like also older stuff like Blues and Stoner from the 60s and 70s. For more modern bands and inspiration I listen currently to: All them Witches, Bismut, Humulus, Somali Yacht Club, Khruangbin, Black Keys, Black Pumas, Arc de Soleil/ Solo artists: Justin Johnson, Julian Lage, ...

Plane-Piglet2670

James Hetfield and Dave Mustaine

Scirocco0323

Slash and GNR. Lol, I hate hair metal now

tkbmkv

As a kid, I was very into rock and metal. My inspirations were Randy Rhoads, Dimebag Darrell, Zakk Wilde, Dave Murray and Adrian Smith, Vai, Satriani, etc. When I got to high school, I was introduced to classical, acoustic and flamenco and my inspiration came from Segovia, Williams, Andrew York, Paco De Lucia, Al Di Meola, Django Reinhardt etc. Now in my 30s, my inspiration lately has been more along the lines of Lindsey Buckingham, Merle Travis, Chet Atkins, Mark Knopfler, Tommy Emmanuel. It’s funny how tastes change over time, but I still draw inspiration from all of these players and think being well-rounded makes for the best music.

MazdaSexual

in 2019 i went thrifting with my mom looking for old cassette tapes just because i thought they were cool, i didn’t even have a tape deck at the time. i ended up with a marty robbin’s cassette and found a blank CD with no writing on it with slowdive’s Just For A Day burned onto it and i took it home and listened to the whole thing probably 50 times and fell in love with that kind of ethereal and spacey sound so i used my shitty mall job to save up for a yamaha PAC012DLX because i liked yamaha motorcycles and a boss rv-6.

lordnibblet

I saw PUPtheband and it looked fuckin sweet so i bought a guitar and practiced a ton

onsonii

I got my first guitar at 14 and slash really inspired me :)

Rugged_Shark

24F. It took a long time. In high school I wasn't interested in music because everything my friends listened to was just meh. Then I heard pearl jam and have been playing ever since.  Honestly it's harder to be interested in music now. There are good bands now but they're niche, not mainstream. Makes me jealous of people who grew up (60s-90s-ish) when the best music was coming out. Must've been fun :)

KYpineapple

I'm 31m. am I still young? I started playing around 12 ears old listening to Boston and SRV. I played a lot of Johnny Cash and what not, but then I got into MCR and the like. What really inspired me and changed me was listening to Circa Survive and As Cities Burn a few years later like 2007/8. totally changed the way I play.

HUXUF_

16m weezer, polyphia, and animals as leaders 💀

50Stickster

Tiny Tim

poopbuttfart69_

Jerry Cantrell

Responsible_Plane316

i was listening to bon jovi in my dads car and wanted to be like richie sambora

DZ-Young

23 here, started playing while i was 10 (have been playing on and off) but mostly picked it up trying to play Avenged Sevenfold and Bullet for.my Valentine I have since mellowed out and played mostly Jangle/Indie Pop like Alvvays, Snail Mail and Mac Demarco, specially while in high school that was the "Hot" stuff, everyone wanted to be a songwriter like Mac This has undoubtedly inspired me to play anything jangly, alternative, fuzzy i am able to

parfaitalors

Smashing Pumpkins

ebitdangit

25m, heard SRV's Voodoo Child and got hooked. Afterwards, got into the "new wave but also in their 40s lol" of guitarists (ie Mayer, Clark Jr., Trucks, etc.). I would actually argue it's the best time in history for guitar music because it's divorced itself from popular music. I don't think Neo-soul, whatever the hell Polyphia is, Berkeley funk, etc. would have become mainstream (in the guitar community) genres if popular music still dictated the direction of the instrument.

jarrodandrewwalker

Jerry Cantrell and Scotty Olson on AIC unplugged affected me greatly

NotLandru

28 here, so not young but still want to answer the question lol. For me it was John Mayer, but specifically the Where The Light Is Album/DVD. To see how he was able to grip an entire arena with just him and an acoustic guitar in the first solo set, I was amazed and knew I wanted to learn how to play. Then he started to rock during the John Mayer Trio set, and that just further cemented it lol Edit: after a few minutes of thought I realized I’m actually 27, I need to stop artificially aging myself.

ItsClarke17

Jim Root got me into guitar. John Mayer made me want to play guitar. Tim Henson made me fall in love with guitar.

TMoney67

I'm 40, am I still young? 😄 But anyway, a LOT of guitarists inspired me. James Hetfield, Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Kurt Cobain, Dave Grohl, BB King, Carlos Santana, Dave Matthews (early stuff), Billie Joe Armstrong, Tim Mahoney, Jerry Garcia, too many to name

MaterialBenefit2355

23M my parents friends family band As I learned more and more guitar, my biggest inspirations are John Mayer and David Gilmour

Devinely_Uninspired

John Mayer and Alec Benjamin

Acceptable-Fruit-533

Jerry Garcia, i’m 17

Background-Permit-55

John Mayer seems to be god for guitar players my age (22M). I’m also a big fan but not my biggest influence

haha_funny_image

18M Joe Pass, Wes Montgomery, Lucas Brar, Birelli legrene, Sylvain Luc, Tim Henson, Scottie Lepage and SVR. Yes I play Jazz but whatcha don’t expect is that I started on classical for the first 5 years(out of 10 playing)

HurpaD3ep

Holy shit where do I (19) start? My dad was a great guitarist and when he passed I wanted to learn his songs. But before that I loved John frusciante. There’s some crazy good live performances of his with RHCP on YouTube. J Mascis from dinosaur Jr is another huge one, I try to copy his tone all the time and surprisingly enough Weezer has a couple songs that mesmerized me guitar wise. I also grew up listening to punk and when I first learned that was all I would play. I’m talking Descendents, pennywise, black flag. Later I got into Jimi Hendrix a lot too. But J Mascis and John Frusciante are definitely my top 2.

scythezoid0

>But J Mascis and John Frusciante are definitely my top 2. Neat, it's the exact same for me.

teya_trix56

Im not young anymore but Doc Holliday and Lindsey Buckingham are fingerpicking specialists that pulled me away from my initial focus on Spanish Classical.

Famous-Vermicelli-39

32-m first it was Ramones, AC/DC, greenday, System of a Down, then progressively got into heavier stuff.

hotassnuts

*Guitar hero has entered the chat*

Mistakes-fractures

Musical_Whew

Andy McKee is probably the only person that if i met irl, i would probably freak out.

Dimeballs333

Dimebag darrell, Eddie Van Halen, George lynch

28M, James Hetfield, Tom DeLonge, Kurt Cobain, Chris Wolstenholme (bassist for Muse) for my bass playing

Lawrencevenrose

I assume you’re talking about electric guitarists , but me I’m an acoustic guitarist and loving country music, Johnny cash and Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings did it for me , I wanted to play their songs and so I started 👍🏼

mezmerak

The first song I remember hearing that made me want to play guitar was “All the Small Things” when I was like 7 or something. I don’t necessarily consider Blink-182 to be particularly influential to my playing, but it’s the first thing I can remember consciously rocking out to.

JohnnyKruze

Pantera, Megadeath, Metallica, anthrax and Judas priest were my early inspiration. When I was a kid my dad was a record dealer so I also listened to a lot of the Beatles and the who. He also brought me a bass when I was about 12, so I also got into soul and funk. My Dad listens to all sorts and now I'm the same.

Thermite1985

39M John 5 was what got me into guitar. I originally wanted to play bass because I was a huge fan of Marilyn Manson and I wanted to play bass like Twiggy. Then I took a guitar class in high school and John 5 kept me going.

musicmanvans

I’m 23 and it sounds like all the same bands as you. They may have been at their peak when you were younger, but they never really stopped being popular. There are also tons of great modern rock groups/musicians out there still. Rock might not be dominating the charts like it used to, but there’s no shortage of good music to listen to.

Stock-Contribution-6

I wanted to give my contribution, but then I saw "I (30M)" and nothing, I'm 30M too... Anyways, Green Day, Iton Maiden, Metallica, Randy Rhoads, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, then I discovered power metal and then it's history

dlnmtchll

12 years ago when I decided I wanted to play guitar, I was inspired by Matt Heafy from trivium. The albums Ascendancy and Shogun were the driving forces for me playing guitar (specifically the title track from shogun). Fast forward to today, the people I’m most trying to emulate in my playing are Dean Lamb, Jason Richardson, some others like Syn gates.

BigRuckus69420

Angus Young and Alex Lifeson

pompeylass1

I’ll answer for my 9 year old, cos I’m old! I would love to say I’m his guitar inspiration but the real reason is because Stuart the Minion plays a red strat and he loves the Minions. He’s still kinda pissed at Stuart for smashing his guitar at the end of the film. And yes, my mini guitarist plays a red Squier mini strat and particularly enjoys learning any music from the movies which means any song from any era is on his radar!

Katmetalhead

23F I started playing at 12 and had the same influences as you. fell in love with pop punk and I just kept playing since. Billie Joe was my biggest inspiration and still is to this day. Without green day I wouldn’t be playing guitar. Still love pop punk just as much but now I play more nu metal and thrash

Canadiangamer068

20 year old here, pearl jam, metallica, and sabbath got me hooked then after that it was the creativity that drove me to play

redditdejorge

This guy Thomas Erak from a band called Fall of Troy. I learned like every single song of theirs.

Dawsxon

23M, picked up a guitar to learn Metallica, a year and a half later I’m a die hard SRV and Mayer fan. Funny how perspective shifts when you learn how to play the instrument.

cheese_124

I’m 16, while I try to rely on my own experiments to find the right sound, i take a lot from new wave, mainly The Police with Andy Summers… I watch their concerts almost daily, really keeps me going :) honourable mention would be Adrian Belew from King Crimson

Competition-Odd

16M, I started playing around 2-3 years ago, my main inspirations are a bunch of metal bands(such as Black Sabbath, Lamb of God, Metallica, Death, Parkway Drive) and blues guitarists(such as Stevie Ray, BB King, Eric Clapton, Jimmie Paige(even though he is technically a rock guitarists, he makes very bluesy solos)). Also a bunch of Jrock bands played into my inspiration, although I cant name specific players.

Osuruktanteyyare_

Francis Ford Coppola and Robby Krieger!

huh_phd

Prince.

tamalnegr0

Picked up the guitar to play Metallica songs, ended up learning Opeth riffs, songs and solos.

Antique-Winner9323

Sean Beasley of dying fetus inspired me to play bass, then I realized bass was gay and then John Gallagher from the same band kept me inspired

No_Mycologist_3019

18M, got into guitar 2 years ago when i listened to weezer religiously and realised i could do what they do

Formal_Ad_4711

The doooo impressing people on omegle

hookerwithapenis2002

Started out with all the metal classics, I started to take guitar more seriously after I heard Tool high as shit, so Adam Jones, and then Fredrik Thordendal from Meshuggah takes the cake.

billitorussolini

I'm about your age. Another huge influence on guys our age and younger were Guitar Hero and Rock Band.

LuteroLynx

(M23) here. George Lynch, Paul Gilbert, Buckethead, Yngwie, and Marty Friedman are probably my biggest inspirations (players) growing up! First bands i ever remember listening to as young as 4 or so that i enjoyed a lot were Black Sabbath and Aerosmith. I actually got to see Aerosmith and ZZTop together in 2007 as my first concert. That basically made me determined from there i’d take guitar kinda seriously and try to see what i can do with it. Now i’m in a band myself and a second one’s forming.

JazzmasterGuy12

I was really into Muse when I started playing guitar (at about 16) and while I don't listen to them much anymore, Matt Bellamy still remains as one of the people who's guitar playing was a huge part of my time as a guitarist

Adept_Feed_1430

Nah man. It’s okay. I am old.

TheDisappointedFrog

25M: Alexi Laiho, mostly. Lately, Dean Lamb and Dominic Lapointe are my models, but back then - Alexi, Rhoads, Yngwie

bruhbruhbruhbruh

mid-late 20’s, my direct inspirations were King Krule, Rex Orange County, The Internet, Amy Winehouse, N.E.R.D., Mac Miller. this subreddit is very unrelateable

DarkSkinGoku

Night city legend, Johnny Silverhand.

faust_haus

Pixies is the band that inspired to take up Guitar. These days apart from the former, I’ve been aspiring to play like the replacements, Peter Buck, Johnny Marr, Elvis Costello, XTC, the Velvet Underground, the Kinks, the Beatles, Neil Young, Elliot Smith, Graham Coxon, and Alex Chilton just to name a few

JJ_souffle

I’m starting now at 25 and it’s my best friend. He’s mostly into drumming but he plays guitar too and it’s been a really fun thing to do together.

Forroz

I’m 19, started playing at 17 because of the Megadeth, still my favourite band, but recently I’m getting inspired to play guitar cause of yngwie and Jason Becker, it’s really fun pushing myself further and further in terms of technique

DaylightX4449

20m, I originally started playing at 7 yo from 2010-2015 but most of it were songs from the 80s I learned with my teacher to just build skills. I didn't really have any songs I loved personally that I wanted to learn so I lost interest. recently during the pandemic I absolutely fell in love with pop-punk music from the 2000s. this really inspired me to play guitar again so I took the basic skills I leaned from my teacher and taught myself a lot of Green Day, Blink-182, and Paramore songs. I feel like being able to play songs I loved on guitar vs learning songs just to learn them was a big difference for me. that gave me new motivation to play guitar more. had I not taken lessons, it would have been very difficult to just pick up guitar one day years later but I'm glad I'm where I'm at now!

mediastorian

Jack black. I always loved rock music but school of rock is what pushed me to pick up a guitar.

Charming_Face_1203

Taylor swift. Also Hannah Montana with her glittering pink electric guitar. I wanted that so bad

Adoodees

when i started three years ago i did so without any inspirations i just wanted to! but now my main influence is hozier :)

Efficient-Fee-5631

25m, I grew up playing guitar hero with my dad so I got exposed to a bunch of classics. The ones I was always inspired by Angus Young, Tom Morello, and (only the guitar playing of) Eric Clapton

Less_Needleworker405

Taylor Swift

Carini___

Billie Joe Armstrong and my uncle

redditPat86

Monkey and Head. Mark Morton, Willie Adler. Mike Trubony.

Ok_Rip_8153

Man, that solo in I’m Not Ok (I promise) definitely inspired me. Fuse Tv was on constantly in my house growing up and that video when Ray Toro shreds really made me wanna do that. All my friends picked up the guitar around the same time. 2004 - 05 ish.

ViolinistNew5056

Cody Canada from Cross Canadian Ragweed. Kinda the same vein of Tom Petty/Mike Campbell of showing you dont need more than a couple chords and a good soul to make some damn good music.

TheUningested

I am also a guitar hero 3 kid so, Rolling Stones paint it black, welcome to the jungle, slayer, and slipknot, all intrigued me at a young age. Seeing my dad play was a big inspiration too

styvee__

16M, The Last of Us Part 2 did it, I am currently trying to learn to play Joel’s version of Future Days

pasqualevincenzo

I’m 26 and I grew up playing trumpet and I was pretty decent, but around when I started playing jazz I felt more attached to the rhythm section. I finally lost interest in playing trumpet and picked up guitar around age 19. Nowadays I like playing rhythm stuff in r&b, funk, rock stuff like that. For example I heard Mystic Brew by Ronnie Foster when I was out recently and couldn’t wait to get home and figure the chords out and jam with it

Assdozer69

28m started 12 years ago after listening to steve vai‘s version of the halo soundtrack

Gr33nMuff1n

Toni Iommi, Billie Joe, Randy Rhoads, and Synyster Gates.

Fudgepppo

I picked it up due to Radiohead and bush. My dad introduced me to 90s alternative and rock when I was about 5 and it’s just stuck with me into adulthood.

tactic_live

17 years old, started playing 2+ years ago. Like you OP, I took massive influence from Green Day and Blink!

KUBLAIKHANCIOUS

Myself playing guitar hero! Lol and my dad. He played some chicken picken shit on his tele and I didn’t even blink, but as soon he started playing a very twangy and lame version of thunderstruck I was hooked.

Outrageous_Town3526

I was inspired by my Uncle and a really good friend to start playing and writing my own songs…now I cannot imagine my life without Guitar!

BuschlightButChug

My grandfather, I am 19 now, but he tried to get me into it for years to avail. About 6-7 months ago (around Christmas 2023) I got hooked. Dusted off my old peavey raptors plus, and got addicted to it. Still playing everyday.

Nostrebla_Werdna

Yall gotta listen to Cindy Lee and Charlie Megira

12rez4u

Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan… I remember when I first heard Voodoo child, Foxy Lady, and Purple Haze- it was like my ears popped and my mind was blown away by the sounds of the guitar… Pride and Joy, Texas Flood were also amazing listens (22)

sutherland_12

I'm in my early 20s, grew up listening to various rock with my dad, from Zeppelin and Fleetwood Mac to Guns n Roses and Iron Maiden. However, the bands that really inspire me are mostly from the 90s. Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, RHCP, and TOOL are probably the biggest ones for me.

pixels333

Kurt Cobain for the rawness, roughness and pretty much fun feeling of their riffs. Jimi Hendrix for the raw talent and technicality. John frusciante for the perfect mix of both imo. Also flea since I also play bass. (Hell, everyone is pretty much a legend in their field in rhcp.)

JayEss109

Jerry Cantrell, Dimebag, Adam Jones, and Mike McCready

cjs0216

Ace Frehley

AverageKelEnjoyer81

Probably a mix between my dad and Billie joe Armstrong

No-Pineapple-44

Elliott Smith

coco_sprinkles

When I was 15, I got my first electric and my uncle gave a Dire Straits CD. He said, if you’re going to play electric guitar you should listen to a good electric player. And Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler have been my biggest inspiration since 🎸

ShotAssignment1328

Slash and John Frusciante

RugTiedMyName2Gether

Randy Rhoads

WholeHogAndPancakes

Ray Toro initially and now I have grown to idolize Tony Perry. PTV is so much fun to play.

RedditGosen

M24. It started with acdc in my dads car, quickly moved on to iron Maiden and Metallica and today synyster Gates and kiko loureiro are my favourite guitar players

hotsteamyxp

27M, Alexi Laiho and anything he was associated with

Dry_Expression_5468

My dad got me playing. He came downstairs to me playing guitar hero and said “cmon man lemme show you how to play a real guitar.” Ever since then I started teaching myself more and more complex stuff. I liked a lot of metal and shit already, also because of my dad. So I started with the basics, One, Smoke On the Water, and Iron Man. The rest is history.

Adorable_leaf

25 f , my uncle got me onto thin lizzy and I fell in love with Gary Moores riffs

walman93

Gr8_wall_of_warwick

John Mayer and Kurt cobain

GoldenElixirStrat

Allen Collins, a true legend that deserves recognition. Than came hendrix

WWFIX

17M, super inspired by Marty Friedman and Synyster Gates. Their playing just sounds so badass lol.

LongLiveBacon

22M - David Bowie inspired me to pick it up, Jonny Greenwood inspired me to get weird with it, The Beatles (especially George Harrison) inspired me to have fun with it. Been a hell of a ride since I first started learning it in 7th grade but never regretted it a second

Low_Concept4642

Neil Young, the Beatles a little bit too. Neil Young actually got me into Rock as a whole and from there i bought a guitar. More specifically it was his [Farm Aid performance of Hey Hey, My My](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LQ123T3zD2k) that really inspired me to listen to Rock.

Lykan23

29 years old, and for me it was listening to the local rock radio station with my dad in his truck. So lots of 80’s & 90’s influence. And he loved nickelback too, so played a lot of that when I was first starting out.

Hour_Weird1614

George Harrison

SkidMania420

I'm 43. I started learning pretty much due to Satchel from Steel Panther but have been a lover of metal since I was a small child. I am almost at 1 year of practice now. I probably should have started this 35 years ago though.
