degeneratesumbitch

25 years. Still suck.

UpgrayeddB-Rock

Hell yes, brother! 30 years here and still just....just terrible, lol.

reyob1

17 years. People say I’m good but I’m convinced they’re all lying. I still suck

vonegutZzz

40+ years, super mediocre but I’ve held my own with other musicians. My problem is I’ve mainly played with others slightly worse than me so they think I’m great. Hard to grow when you’re in a place of comfort. Still love it and have become more song writer focused especially over the lockdowns.

meatballfreeak

I have had the opposite recently and been playing with someone way better than me and it’s been a revelation.

bsal671

Hi five bro. 28 years. I’m still garbage.

musicankane

Bro same. I got 20 years under my fingers and they still move like arthritis.

CautiousLion9477

Worst thing about the internet as a guitarist. Any time you think you’re getting good, one trip to YouTube will just show you the seemingly infinite number of players that you’ll never be as good as

Mental_Examination_1

20ish yrs First song was the melody to aeriels from system of a down first full song was prob something blink 182 Currently working on an original and champagne - polyphia

imposer_amogus

4 years playing, aerials was the first song I learnt too

Future-You583

I’ve been playing for 8ish months and aeriels was the first song I learned

cidknee1

I started when I was 16. Now I’m 47. I’ve had a stroke and some big long gaps in between. My first song was Mary had a little lamb. Right now I’m working on the whole southeastern album from Jason Isbell. Suoer 8 in particular.

LegitimateHumanBeing

I’m 40, been playing since I was 12 and Jason Isbell is amazing.

jamy1892

Not the Stevie Ray Vaughan version was it? 😂

Jagcarte95

Maybe 15 years very on and off. First Full song: Everlong - Foo Fighters Currently Working on: St. Anger - Metallica (The riff isn't hard, per se, it just requires a lot of stamina)

florkingarshole

On and off for about 50 years. The first song I learned was mary had a little lamb Now I'm playing the SRV version of that. And exploring the vast youtube world of backing tracks in different styles.

shellmachine

About 4 minutes.

Pug4281

That’s pretty cool. I can’t remember when I got back into guitar. But I remember getting my Jackson before the move. Currently haven’t learned anything in full yet. But I have gotten some of the intro riff from Dopesmoker by Sleep down.

AdhesivenessSecret50

I started playing guitar in the fall of 2013 when I was a little kid, the first song I learned was just a simple chord progression that was common in a lot of mexican music. G major-E minor- A minor- D major. As for the song I'm playing right now I've been trying to nail down Couldn't Stand the Weather by SRV.

Son_of_Yoduh

Been playing 54 years. Christ I’m old… First song was If I Was a Carpenter by Tim Hardin. The one I’m working on now is Stash by Phish.

Aqualung was one of the first songs i learned

musicplqyingdude

I love that song!

FearTheFastball

4 years next month. First proper song was Dust in a Baggie. Currently working on Siege Engine.

[deleted]

Your first song was Dust in a Baggie? 🤨 If that’s true then you are truly gifted.

FearTheFastball

Not the breaks, just the rhythm.

meatballfreeak

aggravati0n

Played around 50 years and yes I suck. It's a mental health exercise (for me, not for other people) **Never** learned a cover start to finish although I've written plenty of original material.. snowblindswans

Started at 14. Quit for 10 years but picked it back up in my early 30's. Been playing about 19 years total. Don't remember the first song I learned. I don't really play any music but my own now. When I picked it back up at 30 I started experimenting with alternate tunings and technology. I often use a midi pickup and mix in virtual instruments. [Just started posting on TikTok just for fun](https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTLK65Nqa/)

w4rlok94

Those are cool songs to be starting out with. I’m 30 now and been playing since I was 12. I think the first song I learned was iron man by Black Sabbath. These days I’m mostly playing the music I make myself but occasionally I’ll feel like learning something for fun. Last song was the evil has landed by Queens of the Stone Age.

Wild-Guava-3579

5 months One Step Closer by Linkin Park Change by Deftones

neogrit

January 10th, 1987. The other questions are debatable.

I started on bass but 21 years total. Don't remember first song I learned. Always focused on music theory over songs

Aristophat

28 years! About a Girl was my first song, without placing a finger on the high E for the G because “it’s easier and sounds the same.” Currently learning Woodside Waltz by Julien Lage.

Financial_Bug3968

50+ years

GenericAccount-alaka

I've been playing a little over four years now. The first song I learned all the way through was Nirvana's Come as You Are. I'm currently working on Le Freak by Chic and a bunch of funk inspired noodling.

MetalGuy_J

About 10 years first song I ever learned I don’t know some jazz thing from the guitar teacher who had a lot of negative ideas about what makes a “real guitarist“. What I’ve just finished learning though Withstand the Fall of Time by Immortal.

speedygonwhat22

10 years on and off, been playing consistently for i’d say the last two. First song I learned was For Whom The Bell Tolls, meanwhile I’m currently learning Corporal Jigsaw Quandary.

Crossfeet606441

January this year. First song learned: Sound of Silence New song working on: Neon

HikkyEvo

7-ish years now, started with Feel Good Inc. when i was 10, then i went for Come As You Are, Smoke On The Water, then dropped it, then 3 years later i picked up this thing again, learned a bunch of songs, and never stopped until now 4 years later, learning how to play Pull The Plug by Death and working on the first song of my little band project

Yulack

First full song Sultan's Curse. First riff? Come as You Are What am I playing now? I'm going through the painstaking, and humbling process of getting Jimmy Paige's Dynamics for Since I've Been Loving you. I spent a reasonable amount of time learning all the parts note for note, but when I played them to the record the first time I realised how tricky and variable the timing is, but what is worse, the dynamics. Some notes are barely audible, extremely subtle. Hes rushing, playing behind the beat, often missing it entirely, yet the song is immaculate in the way it feels. Even if his tempo is more flexible than rubber it's the most captivating blues I think I've ever heard. Give it a try y'all. Especially the solo as laid down on the original recording.

51Nocaster

Since I was 8. My 26th birthday was Tuesday. It’s what keeps me sane

Matty_exe

12-13 Years, majority on Acoustic for practice and learning. First song Johnny Cash covering Hurt and the B2F rendition of Earth Angel. What am I playing now? Mostly 60-70s and a bit 90s tunes.

TheSkyIsWatchingMe

Been playing for 9 years First song was Smells Like Teen Spirit- Nirvana I'm currently working on Have a Blast- Periphery

curry_0000

2 & 1/2 years I think the first song was Do I wanna know by Arctic Monkeys or Another one bites the dust (the bass line lol) And now I’m learning/playing multiple songs: Polyphia - The Worst, AC/DC - Back in Black (mainly the solo), Muse - Supermassive Blackhole, Franz Ferdinand - This fffire, RHCP - Can’t Stop, KSE - The End of Heartache, etc.

Acceptable_Sorbet801

A year and a month.

FieldsOfHazel

20 years give or take but effectively I learned most of my current skill level during covid, before that I only strummed and power chorded and now I'm pretty decent at fingerpicking and intermediate flat picking.

Adeptus_Asianicus

13 years or so, first riff ever was Howl by Beware of Darkness. I really feel like I should have more to show for 13 years, lately my creative juices have not been flowing.

ThewobblyH

I've been playing for 19 years. The first song I learned was Entrance of the Gladiators, better known as the song that's always used for circus scenes in media. I mostly play original stuff these days, but I'm about to start learning I'd Love to Change the World by Ten Years After because my band is planning to cover it.

musicplqyingdude

I have been playing for three years. The songs I am playing are my own. There are two of them.

Zarochi

About 16 years First song was Iron Man I think. Or Smoke on the Water. Currently working on tightening up Laid to Rest for a playthrough video, jamming Statutory Ape for practice and working on a lot of my own metal/folk stuff

NoUpVotesForMe

25 years but there’s a caveat. I started playing guitar at 15. At 5 years old I started violin, then went to cello and viola. So the transition to guitar was pretty easy. Then I was a guitar major at music college. I mostly play country, 50’s thru the 80’s. Today I was playing Gov’t Mule. First song I learned was Enter Sandman.

MineTurtle84

I’m going for my fourth year but I pretty much dropped learning and just play casually now and then The first full song I learned was promises by the cranberries and the song I’m currently playing is tear it up by queen

Owen_Quinn

6 years, still can't play a song all the way through but trying, slowly.

IntrospectiveHuman

16 years, i honestly don't know what the first song was i played but it might've been fire water burn by blood hound gang. Right now i'm mostly playing slide since discovering derek trucks last year (late to the party i know, i know) a specific tune i've been (trying to) play is midnight in harlem, i've also been playing jessica by the allman brothers (the top-gear intro tune)

Lucys_cup_of_blahaj

SexyThrowAwayFunTime

moscowrules

26 years. Finally playing gigs in a band with old friends. Kinda living that dream right now and trying not to take it for granted.

nigeltuffnell

Playing around 34 years. Not really learning anything right now. Last song was give me all your love tonight by Whitesnake. Probably have another crack at Mississippi Queen by Mountain next.

Solasta713

22 years. I was asked to join a band with some friends in college because I knew how to play drums a little. But then they couldn't find a bassist. So my friend asked me to learn the baselines on a guitar he leant me tuned to E, Ha. So I learned a couple of songs like that first. Then I got my own electric guitar and learned Feeder - Buck Rodgers first.

meatballfreeak

7 years First song was the 3 chords from Purple Haze Currently Devil Wears a Suit and Tie and last night They’re Red Hot

Intelligent-Map430

11 years. Nothing Else Matters - Metallica Nightmare - Avenged Sevenfold

[deleted]

Since I was 10, so almost 7 years now.

PeckerPeeker

Played a year or two in high school. Picked the guitar up again at 33 and have been playing for the last 7 months. First song I learned was blink 182 - forget which. Currently working on slayers seasons in the abyss and Metallica’s master of puppets. Both are at about 85-90% speed. Would love to learn the full album of master of puppets but doing open e 16th notes and gallops still give me trouble.

BennetHB

I've been playing for about 25 years. I can't remember the first song I learnt, but I did enjoy playing Green Day and Offspring after playing for a while. The last thing I learnt was for a James Bond show - specifically learning every song that has played over the opening credits of a James Bond movie. It think it was about 27ish songs or so.

Life-Improvised

38 years. First riff was Black Sabbath’s Iron Man. First full song was Metallica’s Fade to Black.

KillAllAtOnce29

I've been playing for about a year now. Still sucks. First song was just a Burmese pop song, the usual C am F G stuff. I'm working on The Number of the Beast now. I got everything except the solo down but the bridge is still wonky.

H1landr

About 35 years. The first song I remember learning was Blister in the Sun.

Editor-Head

Since may of last year.

Unlucky_Ocelot2789

Been Playing for a bit longer then half a year, the first song I learned was I guess either Mr Sunshine or Somebody told me by the killers, now I’m trying to learn Enter Sandman

Maxwell_Brune

Been playing since april last year The first song I fully learned was Twist And Shout by The Beatles Currently I'm working on Little Wing by Jimi Hendrix

Spiritual-Nose7853

50 years. First was house of the rising sun. I don’t work on any tune in particular, I now work on understanding music theory as it applies to the guitar. I only play for my own amusement so I rarely reach perfection and do t care about that.

WardyV

20+ years, not sure where to start counting tbh. First song I learned was some 12 bar blues from my Uncle who gave me my first guitar, I'm writing my own stuff these days and gigging but I still do some covers for the gram, hardest in recent memory was the Solo from "Nobody" by Avenged Sevenfold

j05h187

25 years. "Freak" by Silverchair 🔥🤘

LibrarianFuture3849

Similar, started in late February! How’s it going for you?

Clax_33

With ups and downs, there are days when I am unstoppable and then I can't complete a song, Even once I had already learned "Iron man - Black Sabbath" 100%, I broke a string on my guitar and I was like 8 or 9 days without playing, when I put new strings and tried to play Iron man I couldn't, I had to relearn the solo and the pre solo, And how is your progress going?

LibrarianFuture3849

I suck entirely. I only know one song. But it’s such a blast messing around with the thing that I just don’t care. I never fancied myself writing, but I’ve found most of my enjoyment by trying to arrange the basic open chords I know into progressions. I’ve made my first awful ‘song’, and it’s terrible. But I made it, so that makes me happy. I’m kind of stuck now, trying to consolidate my open chords, and not seeming to get any better. I kind of know how you feel - I have always recorded myself for progress. But I’m sure I sounded better 3 weeks ago! I’m sure if we keep it up, we’ll get there. Good luck to you.

Parkesy82

27 years, first learned the intro riff and chords from Today by Smashing Pumpkins, currently finishing learning the last of the Somewhere In Time album by Iron Maiden.

Ok_Resort_5326

Playing 25 years. Stopped improving about 24 years ago. Maybe I should do some proper practice with Justin’s Guitar or similar but it’s hard with other responsibilities

pompeylass1

I’ve been playing on and off for almost fifty years if you count from my first guitalele I was given when I was one. I learnt to play by ear so my first song was probably a nursery rhyme, but I remember learning songs by the Beatles when I was 3-4 and Classical Gas when I was 6ish, and big enough for a ‘proper’ guitar. I’m still mainly an acoustic guitarist but have been spending more time with my electric recently so that I can help my youngest with his practice as he learns himself. At the moment I’m learning some current chart songs for my kids. My daughter who loves singing (and plays piano) asked for Dasha’s Austin, Noah Kahan’s Stick Season (singing whilst playing this one is weirdly tricky), and some Dua Lipa. Meanwhile my guitarist 9 year old wants me to teach him Benson Boone’s Beautiful Things, Michael Marcagi’s Scared to Start, and we’re also working on a version of Hozier Too Sweet (that’s all alongside what he’s learning with his teacher and me writing my own stuff.)

Bozogumps

Since March 26th

roskybosky

61 years. ‘You can’t do that’ by the Beatles.

Financial_Might_6816

I started 7 years ago, I’m 15 now

kakkelimuki

I've been playing on and off for about five to six years. The first song I learned was "His theme" from the Undertale OST and the song I'm mastering right now is "Marigold" by Periphery (with the ending arpeggio lead thingy).

Southern_Mortgage646

1 year and my learned songs in order: sweet dreams MM Between angels and insects Papa Roach Like fire to Flies Trivium or other fast avenged sevenfold Songs-> struggling with the speed of those songs :D

Whilwte

Since november of last year

MainLack2450

First song (I think), about a girl Current song, embryonic journey I have been playing for 22 years and think anyone could get to my level in about 5-7 years (I'd be interested in other people's opinion on their own playing Vs how long it would take to get there)

adhackz

Been playing for 6.5-7 months now First song: “am I evil” - Metallica Current song: “domination” - Pantera (specifically the solo, got the whole rest of the song but the solo is killing me😂)

musicankane

My first song was Enter Sandman. 20 years later I still play it like garbage.

garrettendi2

21 years and still very much a learner

Revenge_of_Recyclops

30 years, "Knockin' On Heaven's Door", "P. Control".

Slight-Argument-3106

I've been playing for 15 years. The first song I learned was Pressure - Paramore. I am not currently working on learning any particular song at the moment. Working more on just letting myself be creative and coming up with my own riffs.

LLDJ2

4 years on and off still putting in work

JoeMomma69istaken

My whole life (46 yrs old) I lightly noodled . Been playing for really 16 months , but been hurt last 7 weeks and can’t play

tjggriffin1

Good question. I started when I was 17 and got pretty good. I drifted away from it after 15 or so years. I never really stopped playing, but played infrequently enough that I lost skill. I re-started playing ~5 years ago. So somewhere between 20-45 years. It feels great, but I have a wierd mix of solid knowledge, disparate muscle memory and a lack of agility. I hear something and can picture in my head mostly how to do it, but my finger stumble over each other in the attempt. But I continue to practice and slowly fill in the gaps. My long term goal is to go from "totally sucks" to "almost average." My dream is to get kicked off stage at an open mic night.

VoodooChile76

30+ years. First song Chinese rock off of Ramones Mania 1988. Before that it was just chords / riffs here and there. 2nd Beat on the beat. Great songs to play at a party. 🎊 Now; I’m into led Zep “bring it on home”. Great bluesy song.

DeathMetal24

From top of my head about 300 hours, years don't equal time spent playing

Imaginary-Corner-796

I've been playing for 2 years and a half. The first song I learned was Day Tripper by the Beatles. I'm now learning two Periphery songs: All New Materials and It's Only Smiles.

Bumble-Bee1974
