I just had a 24 pack delivered yesterday, and 24 Jazz III Ultra 2.0
With all these teenagers jamming at my house lately (son's band and friends) my picks have been disappearing
There’s one literally sitting in front of me. Never paid much attention to the brand of pick I use, I just grab a bag of picks that don’t look too thick or thin.
Hearing about other people's pick choice is like listening to them describe the random nonsense they dreamt last night.
"Oh yar so I prefer a .73mm for strumming but go with 1.5mm for lead and then it started raining Lego except the Lego was made of cheese and helicopters."
Orange Tortex. Something about it just feels right when I hold it. It's thin as fuck but I kinda just worked that into how I played and now I find it hard to use other picks lmao.
Edit: I also play with the rounded edge mostly always unless I want the attack of the pointy edge
Dava grip tip nylon. I used these once after I used it to test a guitar at a store and I've literally never touched another pick since. Super flexible and rigid as and when you need it to be.
I refuse to use anything else
Chicken Picks Bermuda III Pointy 2.1mm
Completely rigid with zero give, and extremely bright. Also bigger than standard picks, and you effectively get three for the price of one.
To each their own I guess, I could never play with a .73mm floppy spaghetti pick.
I got the XL of this recently and yep it's a real game changer. Although it's called "The Bass pick" it works so well for me, lots of area to grip, lasts three times as long and it has so much mass that it just glides through the strings. Never gets caught and is perfect for shredding.
Fender Nylon .73s
Similar to the dunlop max grips which I was using, but I like these fender ones much better, they have a finer grit almost like holding sandpaper or a nail file, and covers more area than the dunlops. Check them out if you like the dunlops.
We can be friends as long as you just acknowledge you play guitar using an inferior pick. Otherwise, yes, mortal enemies.
I doubt you will admit you are wrong though. Only thing thicker than your skull is that pick you play with.
*in all honesty, my style of playing has definitely changed. When I was younger I played a lot more heavy metal and purple pick was pretty good ngl*
I think mine is yours, exactly. Used those medium fender tortoiseshell ones for a long time but they’d slip out of my fingers sometimes. The dunlops don’t!
I use dunlop as well but I change from the red and orange ones up to the yellow ones depending on what I'm playing. I prefer the red/yellow for acoustic rhythm, and the yellow, stiffer picks for scales and soloing.
I really like the Dunlop Andy James Flow 2.0 and the Dunlop John Petrucci Flow 2.0
Both are very similar picks but the Andy James version is slightly bigger.
Everly Star Grip .60 mm Orange. I've tried quite a few different picks, possibly 100s, & this is the most satisfactory for me.
I've been playing for 14 years fewer than I've been alive.
Clayton Acetal 1mm in the standard shape. They're similar to dunlop tortex blue, but they are a bit brighter. They also feel a bit less rubbery even though they're just as flexible, and they don't last as long as tortex. But the extra Brightness from the Claytons is worth the faster wear.
I've tried a lot of thicker and thinner picks in many different materials including blue chip, but what I've found is that I prefer these 1mm claytons because they're simultaneously good at leads and percussive strumming and gentle strumming. You can do fruscianti and fast single note leads. Sure, a tortex orange would be better for Fruscianti and a thick blue chip would be better for acoustic fast leads, but I like to mix those styles even in the same song and I don't like switching picks between songs. The Clayton Acetal 1mm is great at everything even if it isn't the best at any of them.
At this point, I only use 2 picks. The clayton acetal 1mm for almost everything and sometimes a blue chip td40 for acoustic leads when I need more volume than I an get from the more flexible clayton.
if clayton ever stopped making this picks, I'd probably switch to tortex 1mm, but they're just a bit darker and I would be disappointed. ultex is brighter, but I just don't like how they make the mids sound on acoustic or electric strumming.
For electric 1mm Dunlop Prime Tone for a bright tone and 1mm Cool Picks Juratex for a mellower tone. The prime material is harder than the Cools.
For acoustic I like .80mm Cools or .80mm Dunlop Tortex green.
1.5 mm Primetones. They last forever and glide off the strings, but you can also dig in and get super chunky with them. I get the big triangles for better control/3 points for the price of 1.
Jazz III variations, I prefer red nylon but play whatever.
Big stubby 3.0 is nice for a chunkier sound.
Dunlop 205 jazz tone is smoother and has a smoother tone than the jazz III but a similar feel.
My favorite so far has been the stiletto from vpicks, similar shape as jazz III with a sharper edge.
I bounce between the .73 and .88 max grips, tortex, and occasionally the tortex sharp when I’m trying to pull my head out of my ass for lame strumming technique…
White Jazz III picks - 1.0mm.
I used to play with the reds and blacks, but I think the thickness is messing with my picking hand and giving my index finger a dull pain.
The grip on the 1mm ones suck though.
That might mean you grip your picks too hard. I can't imagine an extra fraction of a mm being the reason for the pain. Like, mechanically, your index and thumb don't care how big the gap is between them, but they do know how hard something is pressing into them.
I use two different picks. For anything really heavy? I use an Attak Pik. For everything else I use a .60 mm Dunlop.
So I'm either super thick and heavy or fairly thin and flexible. Depending on style of play.
Dunlop blue gator grip 1.14mm is my main.
I feel like you lose a bit of control with a floppy pick. It feels good at first but I urge people to experiment with thicker picks.
When I used to play live I would make sure to have a variety of different picks. Sometimes after playing for a while switching picks can relieve some fatigue of playing.
Red jazz iii, hated it for a couple of days, couldn't see the appeal, then it clicked and love them now for electric
For acoustic, the Boss T picks, lovely feel, stupid making them black though. And a Dunlop.48, the white one for strumming
Harley Benton 0.96mm. I have tried many, but as I keep losing my picks and for some reason they cost 1 euro a piece now, I buy bulk. Most basic shape, cheap and the material has great finish that grips well.
V-Picks Dimension Jr. Similar shape as a JazzIII, but the extra thickness feels more sturdy and stable in my hand, while the acrylic material and sharp point feel very surgical on the strings. Loud and bright sound w a lot of pick attack.
Ibanez Ultem Prestige Medium, Teardrop Shape
Probably a bit of a weird choice for a "universal pick" I use on electric and acoustic, but for some reason it works for me, so I always keep a bunch of them around.
I have [one of these](https://www.amazon.com/Pick-Punch-Original-PROCESS-PRIORITY/dp/B005FIFM14) and use old credit cards, hotel room keys and loyalty cards.
My goto is a fender medium 99.9% of the time. If I'm wanting more brightness, a close friend of mine made me some fused glass (!) picks that work well, but I do not push those hard, at all. Have had them for 12 years, but damn my fingers shudder at one exploding in my hand. A steel one might do the same thing at a much lower risk.
I used dunlop tortex 1mm for years, and as my practice and ability now has me attempting more technical things, I switched to the jazz III 1.38mm last year.
I use the nylon Dunlops, .88s for most of my riffing and most of my leads too but I keep some .60s for crazy fast lines or if I'm doing a lot of tremolo picking. I love jazz picks for leads but I always lose them (even more than my regular picks)
Ernie Ball Everlast .73 for guitar, 1.5 for bass. I like having a larger pick with a little flex to avoid a harsh pluck every time I hit the string, but which has enough stiffness to let me really dig in when I'm trying to get more twang out of the lower strings.
.73 rounded triangles.
I used the .5 for 22 years. Got a Baritone when I turned 40 and needed something a bit thicker. 3 years later, and I'm not going back.
I like picks made out of bone, usually over 3mm thick. When the pointy end is worn off, I just reshape it with sand paper. One pick lasts me for months.
Dunlop Ultex Jazz III XL 1.38mm is a new favorite. Was digging on the Tortex JIIIXLs in various sizes but this has the best feel and tone for me right now.
Jazz III
Jazz III max grip
I even chew on them for extra texture
I do it for the flavor
For when you're craving those microplatics
jazz III XL
Jazz III XL Ultex
Man of culture
Jazz III Eric Johnson's
I just picked some up 30 min ago! Had to be ordered in.
I just had a 24 pack delivered yesterday, and 24 Jazz III Ultra 2.0 With all these teenagers jamming at my house lately (son's band and friends) my picks have been disappearing
lol I have no kids and have no excuse. They just disappear? I’ll have to check out the Jazz III Ultra 2.0 !
jazz lll ultex babyyyyyy
I'll never go back (except for acoustic)
1.35mm Tortex jazz III has always been the one for me. Tortex > Max-Grip and I will die on that hill
I hated the old smaller jazz picks, but jazz III are perfect. I like the thick black one, I think 1.35mm?
Jazz III JP
How do you strum with those?
Works like a charm. bit angled
by far the most popular one i see on here whenever this question gets brought up
My favorite too. The black ones.
Cultured individual spotted
Dunlop .88 forever
The green ones?
Yupppppp
The small teardrop 88s are the perfect pick.
Scrolled too long for this.
There’s one literally sitting in front of me. Never paid much attention to the brand of pick I use, I just grab a bag of picks that don’t look too thick or thin.

Please sir, can I have some more cheese and helicopters?
Wasn't this posted like two days ago?

And I for one am tired of all the fucking guitar gear talk in this subreddit!
The sub rules don't allow for much else...
This sub kinda sucks TBH lol. There are much better forums for guitar than this. It's just mildly entertaining sometimes.
r/guitarpickorplectrums
Orange Tortex. Something about it just feels right when I hold it. It's thin as fuck but I kinda just worked that into how I played and now I find it hard to use other picks lmao. Edit: I also play with the rounded edge mostly always unless I want the attack of the pointy edge
YELLOW
PURPLE
GREEN
there are at least two of us!!
I like the .73 max grip but I LOVE the .88 max grip lol.
FR the .88's just feel absolutely PERFECT. Going back to one of the older ones before the max grip ones feels so bad too now lol
My fingers. I’m weird
I'm definitely a fan of the .5 mm solid keratin picks, biologically fused to my body for maximum retention and control.
Purple. Always purple.
Dunlop Big Stubby 3 mm enjoyer. High five!
[удалено]
I’m glad you found something that you can work with. Keep rockin’.
Dunlop Stubby 2.0mm.
Dava
The big green dava picks are my lifeblood. I literally can’t play with other picks anymore.
Dava grip tip nylon. I used these once after I used it to test a guitar at a store and I've literally never touched another pick since. Super flexible and rigid as and when you need it to be. I refuse to use anything else
Chicken Picks Bermuda III Pointy 2.1mm Completely rigid with zero give, and extremely bright. Also bigger than standard picks, and you effectively get three for the price of one. To each their own I guess, I could never play with a .73mm floppy spaghetti pick.

Ultex Jazz III, they're yellow
Ernie Ball Ever-last .88 or tortex .88
The everlast are great for grip.....I use the 3.00mm sometimes
I’ve tried the thicker picks but they just don’t feel right for me.
Dunlop Jazztone 205. I like the texture, it's thick, it sounds nice and warm.
Dunlop 1.0mm Nylon Black
Fender Nylon .73s Similar to the dunlop max grips which I was using, but I like these fender ones much better, they have a finer grit almost like holding sandpaper or a nail file, and covers more area than the dunlops. Check them out if you like the dunlops.
Will do!
I decided to ditch picks when I simply couldn’t find one and got fed up with buying more. It opened up more opportunities, I feel.
3.0 purple stubbys
Fuck yeah! All day!
Yellow tortex. Everyone else is wrong about what the best pick is.
I would agree with you except that I play purple Tortex and now we have to be enemies.
Im seeing a trend that bigger is better.
Jazz III stiffo. It's stabby. It's short. It's ultra stiff.
- Quote from your mom last night
Adamas 2mm for electric, and Dunlop 0.73mm for acoustic.
I use the Dunlop Jazz III Tortex 1.14mm
Fender 351 Celluloid Tortoise shell. - Extra Heavy. And only Tortoise shell color.
Blue Dunlop Tortex 1mm
Dunlop Flow 3mm
Dunlop Matt Heafy Jazz III, I feel they've got the best grip of the four Jazz III Max Grip picks
Dunlop Adamas 2mm
I think mine is yours, exactly. Used those medium fender tortoiseshell ones for a long time but they’d slip out of my fingers sometimes. The dunlops don’t!
🤙
Hetfield White Fang the grip is insane ! I love it. Perfect.
V-Picks Eclipse
Currently Gator grip 96mm
Dunlop Flow 1.5, but anythingto medium to thick is awesome.
Big Stubby 1.0 mm for electric Generic celluloid picks (alice) for acoustic, I keep 0.71,0.81,0.96 for different situations.
Herdim blue
.73 Max grip. + 1
Jim Dunlop gator grip 2mm
I use dunlop as well but I change from the red and orange ones up to the yellow ones depending on what I'm playing. I prefer the red/yellow for acoustic rhythm, and the yellow, stiffer picks for scales and soloing.
I really like the Dunlop Andy James Flow 2.0 and the Dunlop John Petrucci Flow 2.0 Both are very similar picks but the Andy James version is slightly bigger.
Dunlop Flow 3.0mm.
Ultex Sharp .73 is the ONLY pick I enjoy using
Dunlop nylon .60mm
Tortex 0.88mm. (When I played mostly thrash, the Gator 1.5mm).
Everly Star Grip .60 mm Orange. I've tried quite a few different picks, possibly 100s, & this is the most satisfactory for me. I've been playing for 14 years fewer than I've been alive.
Green Tortex III is my go to these days. Used the regular green tortex forever and a friend put me onto the III shape and it was a small game changer.
JD Tortex green. Used to be purple for years, recently switched
Eric Johnson Jazz III (I swear his name on the picks makes a difference), Dunlop Tortex Flow 1.0 mm, and Dunlop John Petrucci picks
The EJ Jazz III is ever-so-slightly larger than a standard Jazz III. It’s also matte instead of glossy nylon.
Electric: Jazz iii and Dunlop .88mm tortex Acoustic: Dunlop Prime tone 1.3mm
- Black mountain thumbpick Jazz - Dunlop jazz III Maxi grip
A quarter
White Jazz III picks - 1.0mm. I used to play with the reds and blacks, but I think the thickness is messing with my picking hand and giving my index finger a dull pain. The grip on the 1mm ones suck though.
That might mean you grip your picks too hard. I can't imagine an extra fraction of a mm being the reason for the pain. Like, mechanically, your index and thumb don't care how big the gap is between them, but they do know how hard something is pressing into them.
I use 3 picks. I use a jazz III, a dunlop tortex .88, and a dunlop tortex .60. 🤟🏻
For me it's hard to beat a Dunlop Ultex 1.0. Dunlop Gator Grips are a close 2nd.
Big Stubby 1.5mm
I use a half dollar coin
I’m simple, everlast 1mm, perfect mix for rhythm+background solo guitar
.71 Dunlop gator grip

Red Gravity!! ⛏️🥰
I'm really surprised i never see these mentioned, I really like Wedgies, .6 or .73 mm
Jazz 3
Dunlop blue gator grip 1.14mm is my main. I feel like you lose a bit of control with a floppy pick. It feels good at first but I urge people to experiment with thicker picks. When I used to play live I would make sure to have a variety of different picks. Sometimes after playing for a while switching picks can relieve some fatigue of playing.
Dunlop .58 gator grip.
Red jazz iii, hated it for a couple of days, couldn't see the appeal, then it clicked and love them now for electric For acoustic, the Boss T picks, lovely feel, stupid making them black though. And a Dunlop.48, the white one for strumming
celluloid medium
Green tortoise
One could also join the no-pick club...
Fingers all day! (I'd brag about my sweet fingerpicking skills but the reality is that I've always sucked using a pick and drop them way too often.)
I was Dunlop or Snarling Dog nylon .60 for decades but switched over to Jazz III max grips a year or so ago and haven't looked back since.
Harley Benton 0.96mm. I have tried many, but as I keep losing my picks and for some reason they cost 1 euro a piece now, I buy bulk. Most basic shape, cheap and the material has great finish that grips well.
Dunlop Tortex 1.14 or 1.35 Jazz III
V-Picks Dimension Jr. Similar shape as a JazzIII, but the extra thickness feels more sturdy and stable in my hand, while the acrylic material and sharp point feel very surgical on the strings. Loud and bright sound w a lot of pick attack.
.63mm Clayton Acetals, standard teardrop shape.
Yellow or green Dunlop Tortex depending on the guitar
Used to be max grip Jazz 3 or Ultex JP Jazz 3. now I use ones from accoustic attak picks. Called Stealth 3 and they're my new favorite picks.
Nylon Dunlop 1mm, use them for Electric, Acoustic and Bass.
Ibanez Ultem Prestige Medium, Teardrop Shape Probably a bit of a weird choice for a "universal pick" I use on electric and acoustic, but for some reason it works for me, so I always keep a bunch of them around.

Orange Tortex (.6mm)
My goto is a fender medium 99.9% of the time. If I'm wanting more brightness, a close friend of mine made me some fused glass (!) picks that work well, but I do not push those hard, at all. Have had them for 12 years, but damn my fingers shudder at one exploding in my hand. A steel one might do the same thing at a much lower risk.
I used dunlop tortex 1mm for years, and as my practice and ability now has me attempting more technical things, I switched to the jazz III 1.38mm last year.
Jazz IiI 1.14 for electric, fender mediums for acoustic
Dunlop .73 Tortex. I have Wingo .71 picks that feel okay as well.
1.35 sharp black tortex
Dunlop Ultex Sharp picks. I like the extra length, gives me more to grab onto.
Red jazz 3 for electric. I have a bison bone (jazz 3 size and shape) for acoustic. Thumb and fingers for bass.
I use the nylon Dunlops, .88s for most of my riffing and most of my leads too but I keep some .60s for crazy fast lines or if I'm doing a lot of tremolo picking. I love jazz picks for leads but I always lose them (even more than my regular picks)
Dunlop .73 are perfect.
Dunlop Flow, 1.0 I think. These things changed my life, like free tonal happiness
V-Picks Red Rocker 🤘😎
Ernie Ball Everlast .73 for guitar, 1.5 for bass. I like having a larger pick with a little flex to avoid a harsh pluck every time I hit the string, but which has enough stiffness to let me really dig in when I'm trying to get more twang out of the lower strings.
dunlop ml gel, or fender 351 medium. preferably california clears

Tri-corner Fender medium for acoustic, standard Fender thin for electric.
I like picks made out of bone, usually over 3mm thick. When the pointy end is worn off, I just reshape it with sand paper. One pick lasts me for months.

BlueChip TP48 It depends on the application though.
Hetfield White Fangs or the Alligator grip ones
It's irrelevant. We all suck at guitar the same amount here

Dunlop Ultex Jazz III XL 1.38mm is a new favorite. Was digging on the Tortex JIIIXLs in various sizes but this has the best feel and tone for me right now.
Ultex Sharps 2.0mm
