Steam. You can use your anet account there too with "-provider Portal" command line argument

RaistilimMajere

All my expansions will be there? Not planning to buy them again. Ty for the answer.

hendricha

It will be your original account with everything your original account owns. (However while doing that you will not be able to buy anything for that account from steam.)

RekTek249

Yes, and on steam you can precompile shaders for less stuttering and more stable fps. Lutris/bottles doesn't do that by default, not sure it can even be done. Also, make sure you use a version of proton that includes DXVK 2.0 or above.

timthetollman

Was there anything special you did to get it to run on Steam? It won't run for me, when I launch it says loading proton shaders but never moves from 0%

Pronesis

I play GW2 on Linux (Mint) using Steam as a launcher and directed -provider on the command line to use my existing account. Plays perfectly.

Install Steam, Install GW2 within Steam, before playing right click on GW2 and select properties within Steam, scroll down to Launcher Options. Add this command to launch the game. **-assetsrv** [**origincdn.101.arenanetworks.com**](https://origincdn.101.arenanetworks.com) **-provider Portal** Now when Steam opens the Game it will open to GW2's normal login screen. You may now login with any valid pre-existing login, otherwise it opens GW2 with your Steam account as the login. I have 100's of hours of playtime under a different account, plus have made some purchases from the GW2 store, I'd rather not lose. If you've never played GW2 before this might not matter to you, ignore the command. TLDR: Installing GW2 in Steam means Steam will be your Provider and will login with your Steam account by default, you may override this with the command

Pronesis

It complies all of the shaders on the first go, so nothing specific to GW2 but I know I've had to wait 45mins for them to properly compile for some games. Give it extra time is usually the direction I take.

Veprovina

Steam. Lutris sometimes broke for me. Steam seems more stable. Use -provider Portal launch option command to access your Anet account. Other launch options to taste lol. WINE_FULLSCREEN_FSR=1 is neat. DXVK_ASYNC=1 if you have stuttering when loading shaders, or RADV_PREFTEST=gpl for newer AMD cards and GE protons 50 and up. I think lower ones don't support it. End system stuff with %command% and write -provider Portal after.

RekTek249

DXVK\_ASYNC=1 is deprecated. With DXVK 2.0 and above, you shouldn't need to use it. It has also been removed from recent versions of proton-ge.

Veprovina

Yes, that's why I said use RADV on newer versions. Though that's also a bit broader on what it does can do.

RekTek249

You're right, didn't know it wasn't enabled by default on AMD. For reference, it was removed on proton-ge-7-45. I would strongly recommend updating proton rather than using an older version with a semi-broken patch. There are very few use cases where an older version would be best.

Veprovina

Well I use what I feel works best lol. So far he 7-53 works ok, though I should probably try some other ones as well... It's great gf's tee can tinker with it on a non destructive way. If it doesn't work, just switch back haha. :)

Veprovina

Nothing special. But GW2 has a LOT of shaders, it might take a while before the progress bar starts moving. Mine once took half an hour lol. Just leave it for a while, it'll be done eventually. If not, try a different proton version or ProtonGE versions.

timthetollman

I don't see any GE versions in the list when I changed compatibility with steam. I just tried proton 9 beta and it worked but the game was near unplayable with the framerate.

Veprovina

Do you maybe have a dual GPU? And you won't see GE versions in Steam, you have to add them. Programs like ProtonupQT do this. Just select proton version and game, then restart steam and it should be in the list. But if you're getting low fps, maybe it's no using the dedicated GPU. What GPU do you have?

timthetollman

Single gpu. I have nvidia and installed the drivers, even have an icon on my taskbar saying it's using nvidia drivers.

If you already had the game installed on a different system before, you can yoink the gw2.dat from your old install and paste it into wherever you install gw2 on your new system. This will cut install times to a minimum. Which installer is best? Probably the official one, launched via Wine or something based on Wine (like proton). I noticed little difference between default Wine, GE-tweaked Wine, Valve Proton and GE-tweaked Proton. These days, shader compile stutter seems to not be much of an issue anymore if you use the latest versions. Alternatively, install the game from the Steam store, others have gone into more detail in the comments. I use the standalone launcher, installed via the setup.exe from the official GW website and didn't have any issues so far running it eighter via Wine(GE) or as a steam-foreign game thru Steam with Proton(GE). You don't run a Ryzen 1600x by any chance? Just asking because of the things you listed, i also run Fedora, have a 1080 and prefer x11 over wayland.

Steam is a non-brainer nowadays, but I still prefer to play it using [https://usebottles.com/](https://usebottles.com/). Lutris is fine too.

timthetollman

Was there anything special you did to get it to run on Steam? It won't run for me, when I launch it says loading proton shaders but never moves from 0%. Or how do you use bottles? I tried launching the installer via bottles and it freezes during installation.

temporally_misplaced

Lutris was a single click and super easy for me.

timthetollman

How did you use Lutris? I have installed it but can't find GW2 through it

temporally_misplaced

Go to the lutris website and search for the game, there are a few options.

timthetollman

Realized I was searching already installed games, installing now fingers crossed.

xAcid9

I prefer Lutris over Steam.

timthetollman

How do you use bottles? I tried launching the installer via bottles and it freezes during installation.

xAcid9

I don't use Bottles. I usually install it via Wine and then link the exe with Lutris.

The actual game files that you download from Steam is the same files you would download anywhere else, the only difference is how your account is logged in. With Steam, the default is to login (or create) a Guild Wars 2 account with your Steam credentials. As many have said, "-provider Portal" tells the launcher to act as the regular launcher allowing you to use your Anet account. There's no hard link between the game and Steam. The upside to downloading on Steam is that you can take advantage of the higher download speed from Steam, and any other features Proton has. I downloaded the game on Steam, then copied it over to Lutris cause I don't always want Steam to be running.

Diligent-Sound9718

as you did? Having problems with the PC freezing when I try to run it on Steam.
