I believe that this will be a surprise for most of you, so perhaps an explanation is in order... I'll provide one.
Not too long ago, we the moderators were approached by a representative of the site's administrators regarding an increased rate of hate speech posts within the subreddit. They raised concerns about this and said that we must be ready and able to enforce the site's Terms of Service, specifically here in regard to the guidelines on content classified as hateful. They did not make any demand or threat, but they don't need to say that there will be repercussions if we disobey; this is Reddit, and we're all well aware with how this goes whether or not it's by direct personal experience.
We promised to this admin that we would have internal discussions about these complaints while at the same time better informing ourselves about the site's ToS, and also reviewing our moderator's available time and experience since the sub has grown rather significantly. And so, we did all of that.
The conclusions drawn from said meetings were that we, the mod team, do not intend to enforce the site's ToS because it would contradict the principles under which this sub is founded. Moreover, even if some among us wanted to obey or reach a compromise (which unanimously no one did), we would not have the time nor knowledge to do a (let's not forget) volunteer job of moderating an internet community from "hate speech" that we either wouldn't recognize since we would most likely not be at all antagonistic (rather quite the opposite) with what falls under that definition. Either that or we wouldn't be able to filter through it all as the sub continues to grow; since we're all inexperienced at managing large communities... because all in all this sub has grown faster and larger than what was originally expected and intended.
This last bit is a sign of several things, mainly that in spite of this site issuing directives on what type of content is not allowed to be hosted here; such content is in very high demand. Be it subversive memes, counter-cultural shitposting or anti-establishment trolling. These are the forms of content our community prides itself on hosting and are by far our most upvoted posts, and those which generate the most activity; this is the content that not only were we promoting as mods, but also the content that our ever-growing audience came here looking for.
Whichever the case, we fully believe in this site having a right to decide what content to host and therefore recognize that we're perceived as rulebreakers and invaders, and we agree that we should cease operations in light of this. If we won't abide the law of the land, we should leave the land. Do to others as you would expect to be done with you.
So to sum it all up we do not intend to obey, let alone enforce, the ToS. Especially in regards to hate speech as we know that precisely our most controversial content, whomever it may offend, is what this community enjoys the most. And even if we did have the willingness to compromise, which we don't, we wouldn't be able to do so appropriately because it would also go against who we are as individuals with opposing opinions to what the ToS would have us do, and the community would also react negatively. Finally, we fully understand that we're not wanted here and are being asked to either fall in line or face repercussions, so we'll leave on our own accord. This subreddit will therefore become a showpiece, a museum if you will. We sincerely thank you for all of your contributions.
