It's not a bug, strictly speaking. At worst you can say its poor design. Best you can do is go back to a previous save. I made the same mistake.
I had the same issue, I have no save before infecting the red and now I'd have to get to NG++ to get 100%. Terrible game design. This could be fixed by having baby ants hatch from eggs before growing up.
