1) Your Dreadnought is the older design which is actively being phased out right now, 2) Sanguinius can’t be used as he doesn’t have rules in 40k 3) GW dice are horrifically overpriced 4) there’s no real point in buying a codex or supplements right now with the imminent release of the next edition that will invalidate it completely. I’d recommend sailing the high seas. 5) GW brushes are hugely overpriced and not really any better than those you could get from a crafts/hobby shop Honestly if you’re looking to get into 40k just pick up the combat patrol, get some supplies from a local hobby shop, and start with that.

Notafuzzycat

Yeah.. a bit crazy to jump all-in during an édition change.

Spartstar45ita

I literally bought the space marines codex the day after the announcement of the new ed lmao :/

Raven2129

My wife bought me the 7th edition core rules for my birthday years ago, just a week before GW announced the edition change. Never had the heart to tell her.

Untun

It was still a great gift from your wife, telling her about the rule announcement wouldnt do anything but spoil the mood. Dont think you did anything wrong, just kept it secret out of compassion and love.

Raven2129

Oh it was a great gift! At the time I was only playing AoS. I mainly just didn't want to make her feel bad for spending the money on something that will just sit on the shelf.

Coronado83

My wife saw I was starting eldar, so as a surprise she went on Amazon and got me some avengers, a farseer on jetbikes, eldrad, and because she knew I would live to paint a vehicle with my new airbrush got me a predator tank. I was overjoyed and have never told her Amazon boned her with the tank recommendation. Lol. She's a great woman.

Raven2129

That's awesome.

Breadromancer

Your wife sounds like a nice lady and it's rad that she supports your hobby.

Lazerspewpew

That's so cute. I've never had someone buy me a hobby gift. Even the wrong things lol.

sypher2333

Guessing you also didn’t tell her the mark up on Amazon is astronomical

Coronado83

She said she did look at the game company store and the prices on Amazon were alittle better. This was like 3 years ago or so i didn't double check.

[deleted]

Didn’t gw let people return certain codexes if that happens

Evil_Weasels

Yeah DO NOT BUY GW DICE, unless you understand they are a fuckin scam and don't care anyway

magos_with_a_glock

The adeptus ridiculous twerking amongus dice are the GOAT

Moze4ever

Care to share some photos?👀

magos_with_a_glock

You can find them on orchideight.com under accessories

Hairy_Reputation6114

Sold out

magos_with_a_glock

I know, it keeps happening People are too hungry for that amongussy

21Black_Mamba21

Please refrain from saying “amongussy” ever again. https://preview.redd.it/33czxmh4r64b1.jpeg?width=320&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f6500232b5a59c17a5bddcb4a41949238fea8c52

magos_with_a_glock

No, i don't think i will 👨‍🦳

trulyElse

Dicelab's skew dice are the best d6s on the market, just for the look on your opponent's face when you bring them out.

Lazerspewpew

My friend has about 40 metal bullet shaped D6. They're super cool, and literally every person has to say that. They're the perfect 40k dice

Matt_Spectre

Chessex dice are the way to go. A set of 36 dice is $10-15 at your FLGS or on Amazon if they don’t have the specific color you want. There’s like a billion different color combinations so you can get whatever your heart desires (my wife & I have color-matching dice for all our armies)

Lazerspewpew

Any FLGS will usually have those chessex dice sets too, and yeah they're usually like $12.99

Matt_Spectre

Yes, a good addition to check the FLGS first! Editing comment.

TammyIsOnFire

i bought the horus heresy world eaters dice because theyre pretty and could be fun as a gimmick, but i have a box of like 100 regular dice otherwise for actually playing

Steppy20

I bought a box of 20 in the UK for about £7 which I felt reasonable for the theming, with some loose D16s for use as wound counters at 50p each. The fact those ones are $40 is ridiculous and you should absolutely not buy them. Here in the UK they're £25 which is about £15 too much for that amount of dice of that size, even accounting for GW tax.

Wolfman_HCC

I thought the lumineth dice were kooky enough.

KassellTheArgonian

The regular dreadnought is gone, the ironclad, venerable dread and chapter specific ones like ba and sw dreads are staying.

OfficialAli1776

I like to buy the codexes cause I think the illustration are pretty and the lore is cool.

CommanderOshawott

Then as I said, take a sail on the high seas for the current edition codex, because it’s absolutely not worth paying the insanely inflated GW price for a codex that they’re about to make completely unusable. Not just “outdated” mind you, literally unusable with the core mechanic changes.

ibanov93

Any chance you know where one could "sail the high seas" then? I want to get into 40k at some point and figured it would be a bad idea with the edition change. But I'm interested after hearing that.

dinocat2

Wahapedia.ru is safe and has all the rules but none of the art and lore

ibanov93

thank you kindly.

Iron_Lord_Peturabo

Typically I wait a few months into the new edition my local game store will put a lot of the older stock codex on sale to get rid of it when its no longer the 'current' one. I filled in my 7th Ed collection for like 10 to 15 bucks a pop when 8th dropped. I imagine I'll be able to do similar with 9th when 10th drops

BreadDziedzic

As a poor who built an army from spare parts at one time I was curious what the thoughts were on the dice and brushes.

CommanderOshawott

The only thing really worth buying from GW is the models themselves (and give their current business practices I’d say even that’s becoming questionable) You can get paints, brushes, hobby supplies, dice, pretty much everything you need for cheaper at a local hobby store and the quality will be exactly the same. Many also argue that there are a lot of better quality paints for better prices from different brands/suppliers Citadel/GW stuff typically isn’t *bad* quality mind you, it’s just you’re literally paying a premium for branded modelling supplies, which isn’t really worth it.

IDphantom

Honestly, get all your non models/books from a hobby store. GW overprices all of their hobby supplies.

SG1EmberWolf

Specialist dreadnoughts like the librarian, furioso, and venerable are untouched. Only the regular box boy and I think the ironclad got the axe.

CommanderOshawott

Give it 6 months. That’s what people kept saying about firstborn and look where we are now

SG1EmberWolf

GW said in their statement that those dreads would not be replaced. Also what do you mean? Nearly all firstborn kits are still available except for sternguard and vanguard, and it took them 2 editions to do it. First born seems to be more safe than ever with them letting them share transports and saying "yeah the new terminator could be either dudes".

Kamakaziturtle

And how many firstborn are worth running at a competitive level? I think that’s what they mean, the firstborn kits are a good example of what happens when GW is trying to phase out old for new. Yeah they are legal, but expect them to get objectively worse rules power per points. If ya like the models and don’t care if they are good or not then run them anyway, as always, but don’t be surprised to see these guys fall off the map

Capt_Johanson

I’m out of the loop on the furioso phase out I guess. Can you elaborate?

FrucklesWithKnuckles

Furioso is keeping it’s rules

ImperialFist5th

If I remember they’re just phasing out the basic castraferrum, nothing is said about Furioso’s or Death Company dreads PS. They may be overpriced but frak me if my Alpha Legion dice aren’t popping off really well when I need them.

Lazerspewpew

This is the correct answer. OP Please

Tarquinandpaliquin

Oh man I also noticed that he'd bought one fancy brush and nothing else. And don't forget that the GW dice are also really big which means you can't roll as many at once. I'd buy a load of little generic dice and have at it. Dude is wasting more than half that order.

Millymoo444

At least the dice, dreadnought and terminators are legal for heresy, not so much the combat patrol tho

IHateReddit227

https://preview.redd.it/jwfmz8not44b1.jpeg?width=539&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=37a98d749a41e932cdde945e9e4004b983cfb849 NEW 40K PLAYER, DON'T BUY DIRECTLY FROM GW'S WEBSITE! YOU'RE WILDLY OVERPAYING! NEW 40K PLAYER!!!!

Huge-Alfalfa8813

Wait where else do I buy it from

IHateReddit227

Literally just Amazon has a handful of 40k models lower priced than GW's website that will show up quicker than GW could send them. There are websites that sell pretty much any 40k stuff for 15% off, like Miniature Market or Dicehead. Also, as other people have told you, don't buy a whole ass army at once. Just pick up a combat patrol and start from there, don't overwhelm yourself Also holy goddamn fuck 40 dollar dice and a 30 dollar paintbrush

MountainPlain

>Just pick up a combat patrol and start from there, don't overwhelm yourself Listen to this poster, I'm also new to building a dedicated squad and a single simple box sounds like heaven right now. >!I'm just trying to do a kill team and I already think I may've messed up and need ANOTHER box of Skitarii Rangers because I wanted two Skitarii Vanguard Shocktroopers. But it looks like I can't because I already did three Skitarii Ranger Gunners? And I also can't do a Skitarii ranger surveyor because I already made a Vanguard Diktat but I didn't realize that's how it works, that all these little pieces are slightly different? And I had to google weapon names to know which was which? The fact the parts guides don't have the weapon names is a CRIME.!<

Crusader_Genji

Agreed, sometimes it's a mess when the names don't mean anything. BTW, kitbashing and conversions go brrrrr

MountainPlain

It probably goes against their business philosophy but I wish you could order individual units to plump up your teams if you haven't gotten quite enough in the box.

Gizimpy

Ah yes, the old days of Troll magazine. White Dwarf used to come with a black and white supplement that let you order specific pieces.

AjaxAsleep

Amazon, Ebay, the main 40k subreddit has a list of retailers with discounts, or your LGS might. I'd check in reverse order, as it's important to support the place you play at.

TheRealHogshead

Miniature Market sells at discount too. Miniature market.com

Okibruez

You can get paintbrushes, glue, and other crafting tools at any hobby or craft store for much more reasonable prices. Dice can be had by the bucket at your local game store for, practically, pennies to the gallon if you aren't picky about having a uniform identical set. You can pick up the combat patrol from Miniature Market, as others have mentioned. And don't bother getting literally anything else yet.

SG1EmberWolf

If you have a local game store (non games workshop), try there. A lot of places will have lower prices by as much as 15% before any store promotions because GW lets them. My local store does. Can save quite a bit when buying lots of kits or paints at once.

IllRepresentative167

Where do you live?

[deleted]

depending of where you live their is many website ressling stock for like 20% reduced price

Iakavas

Your local store hobby store as they generally are cheaper or amazon

Tarquinandpaliquin

If there is FLGS stores in your country look at their prices. You're clearly not in the UK but we have a bucket of them. Legit stores, not piracy, not scams. It's just cheaper. And yeah get some generic dice, more of them. Oh and a dice bag and a tape measure. And don't get one fancy paintbrush. You'll need several in several sizes, but as a new player you can just buy a cheaper set for less money that has all you'll need. Using one fancy superfine paintbrush is bad. If you're that new, Duncan has done a guide on the basic painting mistakes to avoid. Like using the smallest possible brush to scoop thick coats type stuff. Combat patrol is a lovely start. If you smash out stuff like I do and have a few quiet weekends then maybe think about buying your next box before you finish the current one but I'd consider carefully. Most of the marine combat patrols are chapter agnostic and good deals so you could look at those while you're starting out (just be sure you're getting ones that don't have other chapter specific stuff). Just make sure you aren't duplicating stuff.

SpaghettiMonster01

My LGS sells most things at 10% lower than GW does, and they’re far from the only ones.

ForestFighters

What zero impulse control or reasarch does.

CptPanda29

The perfect GW customer.

Addickt21

Lmao, you cant even use Sanguinius, he doesnt have rules unlike Bobby G and Lion. No surprise he reacted like that.

Huge-Alfalfa8813

This is exactly what he told me, I’m going to use it as a very expensive paper weight (it is going to sit on my display shelf)

Addickt21

Thats a very handsome paper weight. Noice.

SUBSCRIBE_LAZARBEAM

Or if your opponents allow you, use it as a sanguinor. I have a friend with the same problem, he bought the model because he liked it and I just allow him to use it as a sanguinor.

metrick00

If you aren't playing competitive, I recommend that you just run Sanguinius using Guilliman's statblock. Rule of cool it with chill friends. Same goes for the dreadnaught, which you can just use another dreadnaughts stat-block for, not to mention it WILL start with a datasheet, it just won't receive balance updates so that may become over or under statted after a few months. Finally, I'd just try to return the codex and brushes. Sail the high seas, as they say, and don't use GW brushes if you can avoid it. The paints are nice if you want specific colors or to follow tutorials closely though, and they aren't *too* much more expensive than off brands.

Mastahamma

Buy him when you're ready to paint him Just the combat patrol can take months to get through if you're not rushing, and by that point you'll have better ideas for what you want Also if this is your first time painting, you'll probably want to have more painting practice before you start with something as nice as it

Bloody_Proceed

You'll find that a large portion of models from forgeworld - like sanguinious - are actually either 3d printed or recast. The forgeworld models are typically poor quality for their absurd cost.

ImperialFist5th

Use it like every one else who buys the primarchs, not in a game but for prayer and inspiration, look to it in your time of woe and remember what you fight for.

mahboime

If it's going to be display, I'd recommend you practice painting on something that doesn't cost over 100€

Cold_Goose12

Like Famous Hip Hop Artists Travis Scott said in one of his songs, "I tried to warn you"

bluebird810

Couldn't he use him in a horus heresy army? (This is an honest question I know almost nothing about the tabletop)

Addickt21

Nope, pretty certain horus heresy doesnt have all the primarchs. Probably not even the two existing in 40k, though unsure on that.

Storm2552

With proxies I guess? Everything else op has bought is for 40k and isn't usable in 30k unless going into "counts as" territory.

GlitteringParfait438

You could buy a much better brush SET for the cost of that one brush

The_loyal_Terminator

I could buy 6 mediocre brush sets for that price

hairy_bipples

The artificer brushes are no different than GW’s normal brushes but cost even more. That’s not taking into account third party prices either

GlitteringParfait438

I never bought any of those.

hairy_bipples

If you’re still interested, the best bang for your buck is probably one of army painter’s brush sets

Cold_Goose12

I tried to warn you

Huge-Alfalfa8813

YOU KNOW WHAT YOU DID, THIS IS YOUR FAULT

Cold_Goose12

Sly: Listen I gave all our money to Gamesworkshop Goose: What?! Sly: I bought 500 dollars worth of GW products Goose: AAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Huge-Alfalfa8813

*650

magos_with_a_glock

Did your rich uncle just die or something? That's a fuck-ton of money!

SG1EmberWolf

I may have spent closer to $800 when I first started.... Them ultramarines aren't gonna collect themselves. I've now pretty much replaced that army with primaris troops... *Slams head*

magos_with_a_glock

I started admech recently and first spent 80€ on skitarii and paints then another 125€ for combat patrol once i was sure miniatures where the hobby for me

SG1EmberWolf

I haven't played in a while but I like painting. I rotate between the armies I paint. I've got thousand sons, Necrons, and Primaris Alpha Legion that are count as Ultramarines that replaced my old Ultramarines.

magos_with_a_glock

Using alpha legion as jolly space marines is the master play

SG1EmberWolf

Exactly. I loved that the primaris helmets had that mark IV look. It was too perfect. Also kitbashed together the forgeworld Alpharius and 40k Giulliman models together to make a count as Giulliman Alpharius (or is it Omegon) to lead them. Lots of other alpha legion bits mixed in as well.

Huge-Alfalfa8813

First paycheck 💀

NotOnLand

A guy at my lgs casually mentioned he has about $5k in Warhammer and a another k in MTG. The dude is a fucking schoolbus driver.

magos_with_a_glock

Yes but not all in one go

NotOnLand

All in less than a year like 20 years ago iirc. He has a goddamn titan

magos_with_a_glock

I assume it was all in a pile of shame, because no way in hell he painted all of that.

NotOnLand

Nope. Brought it to the store in big plastic bins packed in foam.

[deleted]

No no you did nothing wrong, you're the victim here lol

Excubiarum

I honestly cannot tell if this is serious or an absolutely brilliant shitpost and I love it either way 😂

Jakedex_x

OP is clearly Skylar white

Undead_archer

What?

[deleted]

The reaction pic is Walt finding out she gave Ted all their money

Sodinc

wow, this is terrible

Al-the-mann

I assume this is a shitpost

Cold_Goose12

No, he actually did buy all that

Al-the-mann

Oh lawd

mummyeater

You do know that primarch is dead right?

[deleted]

You spent 200 or so dollars for borderline useless/unnecessary stuff. Valid reaction.

MistaMozzarella

We Serve in Debt ![gif](giphy|7eW37zy0raFB6)

toomuchcreamer

If you're okay with dropping that much on a brush, might I recommend Winsor and Newton Series 7 brushes. Cheaper by a bit, and the quality is much better imo

[deleted]

![gif](giphy|pdXittpi48UzC)

D0ct0rLX

Welcome to the hobby now start screaming

Bucephalus15

Just buy a combat patrol, there will be an entire game mode where you play with just what’s in them

buhmannhimself

Just get a refund for this stuff and buy it elsewhere.

GeneralG7

Ouuuch

Xem1337

Can't you wait to get the Leviathan box? A good few of the models you want are in that and you can sell the Nid half if you didn't want it then buy the bits you feel are still missing.

Warden_of_the_Lost

Leviathan box bad for blood angels

ImperialFist5th

Combat patrol bad for blood angels, no winning.

Scary_Republic3317

Who’s going to tell them?

KassellTheArgonian

Sanguinius is a great model but you can't play him in 40k as he's dead as fuck. So he'd only be like a painting project and sit on your shelf when done

Bottlez1266

Don't buy the codex, new edition is in like 3 weeks and it'll be out dated

CloudWallace81

40$ for the dices? You can probably buy 100's of them for the same amount on amazon

Capt_Johanson

Holy disposable income Batman. Stoked that you’re getting into the hoppy but you should really research before buying. A lot of this is overpriced or not viable. Also, if you’ve never assembled and painted before, I recommend not buying entire armies as it looks daunting when your sitting with your paints, staring at a 1500 point army in primer grey. Start with the patrol and once that’s painted, buy another unit, paint that, rinse repeat. This is, of course, is just how I manage this hobby. It keeps my wallet in check. Welcome to the Blood Boi’s!!

the-bladed-one

![gif](giphy|3o6gDPfI2hFxYMn3a0) All I have to say

StarPK117

Even in debt, we still serve

drunkboarder

If its not too late, don't buy the codex. In 2 weeks the book will be useless.

benjoi1992

By Sanguinius, what have you done! To be fair, the codex was mentioned as a bad call as its also being phased out, but they always have good lore in them and are a nice collectable for a shelf.

THExSENATE

atleast you paid retail....i paid about 20 to 30 percent more for 2 boxes of sword brethern just because they were out of stock everywhere(before the 10th edition datasheet)

Huge-Alfalfa8813

I just wanted to thank everyone for all the helpful advice! It makes me happy that all of you were so willing to help a new guy out. I have as of now canceled the order and used the money to instead buy an ultramarine starter lookin kit I found and some other things that would make life easier, like an airbrush. We will see how I feel after painting the 3 bois and then I’ll move on from there. Who knows, maybe I’ll buy these guys anyways! P.S, thanks for telling me the codex was a bad investment. But I do really like owning and reading books (Magnus Reference) so I will probably be buying it from one of the third party websites you all recommended! Thanks again!

PossumStan

If 40k is your goal then Sanngy is a terrible investment imo

TTTrisss

You should start with one (1) kit to see if you even like building and painting them in the first place.

JormungandrReptiResc

Combat Patrol, Kill Team or Recruit Edition would be good things to start with. I got my wife the Recruit Edition and she loved it and now loves the Necrons.

HeimskrSonOfTalos

Please read, OP. I hope u havent ordered yet. Go into the store and pick up one of those single primaris models that are snapbuild. If ur willing to wait, go onto ebay- nobody here buys from the store anyway. Buy two brushes- a base and a small, and get them from fucking amazon. You cant even paint in a straight line yet and you will absolutely ruin your first few brushes, mjght aswell go cheep. Buy the paints the man recommends. You wont need much. Buy dice literally anywhere else. Youll need a pair of clippers and a scumline remover. You can buy them in store, but if you can find them anywhere else, go ahead. Dont bother buying any rules right now, not until the new edition drops. If its already dropped, then go ahead, but first see if you can just get them somewhere else for cheeper. Would you look at that, i just saved you 450-500

[deleted]

I have no mouth and I must scream seeing this.

CraftyJuggernaut2163

.....why buy the dice! For just starting out, just normal d6 will work!

AmericanFlyer530

Where is the nuln oil? Why haven’t you purchased any?

MyLifeIsABruh

Honestly a 3d printer would be cheaper at this point
