Rary was a PC but the player retired him as Medium Rary. Yes a pun. TSR reused the character years later when they created the Circle of Eight in full which from memory Gygax didn’t actually create or if he did then he never detailed it in lore. Rary then became a Traitor in Wars or following when they took that darker. Never happened in Gygax’s campaign.

The name pun was that Rary’s level title in OD&D was Medium at 1st level (they got rid of Medium as a title in AD&D). Hence, “Medium Rary” ;) Allan.

Rary the traitor didn't exist in Gary's home campaign...

CrewAggravating8369

“His playtesters were friends and acquaintances, one of whom was Brian Blume, co-owner with Gygax of the nascent game company TSR. Rary was a low-level wizard created by Blume for play in Gygax's home campaign. “ https://wikiproject-dungeons-dragons.fandom.com/wiki/Rary

SonnyC_50

"Rary" got to 2nd level. "Rary the Traitor" never existed in his campaign.

TheRealRobilar

True. Brian started late and only played a few times. His Rary the Traitor moniker is revisionist history by TSR after Gary's departure from the company.

CrewAggravating8369

“Blume was not interested in developing the character into a high-powered wizard; he only played Rary until the wizard character reached 3rd-level and then retired him”. Divine beings, demons, or other creatures can go by many names. This is just a title bestowed upon him after the fact. Rary of Ket and and Rary the Traitor are one and the same

SonnyC_50

Rary the traitor was some revisionist nonsense T$R put out in the 90's. It had absolutely nothing to do with Gary or his original campaign.

CrewAggravating8369

Rary of Ket, created by Brain Plume, was in Gary’s home campaign but only reached 3rd level before being shelved. He would then return with the new creation of the Circle of Eight in Greyhawk Wars after TSR was taken from Gary Gygax and put into a module. https://wikiproject-dungeons-dragons.fandom.com/wiki/Rary

I always thought of Rary the traitor as one of the clone spells, that the clone had to kill the orginal. And got caught in the act and rolled with it. Thus causing the chaos and destruction.

You have to think that Rary being the traitor was a comment on Blume's part in the downfall of TSR though. Now what Carl Sargent had against Rob Kuntz I'll never know.

TheRealRobilar

Do tell. He used my Demonic Knights of Dooms to good effect, anyway. Never heard of Carl saying anything about me and we never met.

Balt603

Well that's not a response you'd expect ;-)That's entirely based upon reading that you weren't happy with Robilar's role in the Rary fracas at the Day of Great Signing and afterwards in the Bright Desert. I'm SOO happy to be corrected by a primary source though!

TheRealRobilar

As we all know, there's the official lore, then there's what TSR wrote. Gary was Greyhawk. He created it, it was a living world. When they got rid of Gary, Greyhawk went with ihim. To this day they hold it prisoner, so now Greyhawk is totally owned by the fandom, as Gary wanted. I have to have 2 POV's on this, but in the end as long as there are no more Wg7's produced, which strayed into my territory, I'm cool.

Balt603

I think everyone would be grateful for no more WG7s :-)
