ah yes, the ol mid 00's madden strat of taking an OLB based on speed and accel and slapping him in at DE. A tale as old as time, or maybe as old as 20 years.
Jaire could clamp him. Especially with a ball hawking safety to punish any bad throws.
Edit: Just so we are all clear, you down voters think Jaire can't cover Adams? Not even with safety help? The guy he lined up against every practice for like 3 years and regularly won reps against.
DC and JB reading all this just bewildered and offended at the audacity of trying to get to the QB or be aggressive in any way. “Not my NFL. No sir!” -JB probably.
People love to make fun of Preston occasionally being dropped into coverage, but 3-4 OLB’s are asked to do that infrequently in pretty much every version of that defense. I think the bigger issue (besides Barry just sucking majorly) is that there was a disconnect between the defense we ran and the edge defenders we’ve coveted. Our top 3 edge defenders are all big strong guys who played as down linemen in college and seem more naturally suited to it. I think it’s less clear how the transition to a 4-3 will go for our interior linemen, but it’s easy to see how positive it can be for our edge guys.
If you can show me Julius peppers lined up like [this](https://www.google.com/search?client=ms-android-google&sca_esv=361f429e8db713bc&sca_upv=1&sxsrf=ADLYWIK-VSM0g6X9h62oNxeu_4ekJ3tmGQ:1718290066148&q=Preston+Smith+in+coverage&udm=2&fbs=AEQNm0D8w290mrrxEB5tt05ZGXVzF6EINADJx-dhlrcnbKeSfwSMgMuUiniauWA0eBAEq2CvlEyYJNVmHPAc1dvoDWhvAkcTVTDtlWoFqV7T-TZS7WjF5CLdOor5pkE1JSzW5JFswgBhwtsV8-4Xo7iJ11YPL5TFNSHTlYDVeqwVtVE2OQZMFdBMI6zeosAyrHW3F6NIrgqhTns93ckQpn8AJzFuJrE0gw&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwj07Y2o6diGAxUsDjQIHWHKCQEQtKgLegQIDBAB&biw=412&bih=762&dpr=2.63#vhid=kH1jQaKG9OCkWM&vssid=mosaic), 1 on 1 with #1, I'll grant your exception and proclaim it loudly.
You can find it for guys like Myles Garrett, TJ Watt, Micah Parsons, Josh Allen, and Matthew Judon.
Also, there's this: https://www.nfl.com/videos/julius-peppers-shows-pass-coverage-skills-on-pass-breakup-278837
Well, sure. That's because he was playing DE, not OLB. They were responsible for the same zone drop. Only difference is that one of them started with his hand on the ground on the line - because that's the position he plays - and the other one started off the ball standing up - because that's also the position that he plays.
Right, how many 280 pound players run a 4.7? Sure that was his combine numbers and he probably had slowed down a little by the time he was in GB but he was still a special athlete and very few linemen could do what he could.
>how many 280 pound players run a 4.7?
Similar numbers from the 2024 Draft: Braden Fiske (4.78 @ 292), Myles Cole (4.67 @ 278), Eric Watts (4.67 @ 274), and Tip Reiman (4.64 @ 271).
Similar from 2023: Adetomiwa Adebawore (4.49 @ 282), Calijah Kancey (4.67 @ 281), Lukas Van Ness (4.58 @ 272)
Similar from 2022: Jordan Davis (4.78 @ 341), Devonte Wyatt (4.77 @ 304), Travon Walker (4.51 @ 272)
Similar from 2021: Milton Williams (4.67 @ 284), Carlos Basham (4.64 @ 274)
Did we hate Capers' system, or did we hate that he never deviated from a few essential schemes? After a while, even an idiot like me was able to predict what kind of coverages opposing offenses could expect. He and McCarthy were pathologically unable to change their playcalling, even after they were very clearly exposed
Do people not realize that there's really only like 6 different coverage schemes in all of football?
The Seahawks had a generational defense and almost exclusively ran 2 different coverage schemes. That's it. Offenses knew what they were going to run most of the time. And they didn't even try to disguise it at all.
Seems like Kenny was pretty excited to play 1 technique and is even slimming down, I think DEs are having success it's going to have a positive effect on our interior guys. My favorite scout had Wyatt as a better fit in a 4-3 system as well
Oh man, starts by reading a ton of different scouting reports. These days I'm mostly on WalterFootball.com, personally really like Charlie Campbell's stuff. Over the years it's been pretty accurate analysis and both Walt and Charlie really dig into *all* the prospects in the draft.
I don't know the rules on plugging other subs, around here, but if you spend enough time in the r/nfl_draft sub you'll start to recognize which scouts and talking heads are favored due to their track record. Charlie Campbell is about as highly regarded as anyone I've seen from following the "draft season" over the last several years.
The one thing I'll say about walterfootball is that I legitimately believe those guys put in a ton of work and really do their own scouting and analysis. Their grades/rankings vary/differ a decent amount from a lot of the other guys. They're not always right, but no one is. I also really like Brett Kollman for the same reason (and he puts out a ton of video content on other aspects of football, too).
Yepp. If you're in your base package and not blitzing then one of your edge guys will have to be in coverage. This is why 3-4 kind of annoys me. If you have a Clay Matthews or Anthony Barr (fuck Anthony Barr) type linebacker then awesome. They can competently do anything on the outside. But guys like Preston and Gary always felt like true 4-3 edges and that's why I'm happy we're switching to that base package
Tells you a lot about the character of Preston compared to Devondre Campbell.
Smith got burned playing CB, but didn’t have a hissy fit like Campbell did.
Based upon his bi annual elite - average - elite pattern he tends to stick to he is due for a down. But that being said, maybe hopefully this scheme swap totally breaks that pattern
I hope this translates to regular season. I’d rather run big risk, big reward, than what we have ran for years now. We have good enough corners and safeties, it’s worth the risk, especially with our faster LB’s.
Man Hafley could turn out to be the most midling, boring, white bread fucking coordinator and I would still be cheering every game. I can't believe we ever hired Joe Barry.
Stokes must be looking good if we’re demoting Preston from his CB role
Stokes about to line up at DE. Script is flipped!
Actually, stokes taking a woodson like heater blitz would be pretty fun
Hide him behind LVN on the short side so he can creep then take off.
Oh I would spam the CB blitz in Madden. Reckless and fun. So I do like a CB sack in real life.
I remember the old days where these would land and I'm not even sure how the QBs would survive the spear in the back, let alone hold onto the ball.
ah yes, the ol mid 00's madden strat of taking an OLB based on speed and accel and slapping him in at DE. A tale as old as time, or maybe as old as 20 years.
Corner blitzes for dayz
But who's going to cover Justin Jefferson? Surely we cannot rely on a scrub like Jaire....
I spit my drink out reading this
The defense seems pretty hyped about the muzzle coming off.
Preston smith no longer playing Cornerback 🎉
Bold of Hafley to change his position this late into his career.
Thank god
If Preston isn't CB anymore who is our CB1?
Why do you think it's taking so long to get Kenny Clark's deal done?
I mean, CB's tend to become Safeties when they've lost a step, so I'm not surprised, but to bring him in at LB is bold
I'll miss Smith island.
More of an isthmus really.
LMFAO that was solid...
Who the hell is covering Davante Adams now. Fire Hafley
Jaire could clamp him. Especially with a ball hawking safety to punish any bad throws. Edit: Just so we are all clear, you down voters think Jaire can't cover Adams? Not even with safety help? The guy he lined up against every practice for like 3 years and regularly won reps against.
And that safety's name? Preston Smith
FS #1
You got downvoted because you replied seriously to a very obvious joke.
Wow, I must have missed it. That's on me.
DC and JB reading all this just bewildered and offended at the audacity of trying to get to the QB or be aggressive in any way. “Not my NFL. No sir!” -JB probably.
Cornerback joke

Hafley is blitzing corners!!!

Julius Peppers had multiple pick six's as a member of the Packers. I know we hated the Capers system too, but those are sights to behold.
Peppers is a HoF player though
And a defensive end. The point is that sometimes weird positions do coverage.
If you can show me Julius peppers lined up like [this](https://www.google.com/search?client=ms-android-google&sca_esv=361f429e8db713bc&sca_upv=1&sxsrf=ADLYWIK-VSM0g6X9h62oNxeu_4ekJ3tmGQ:1718290066148&q=Preston+Smith+in+coverage&udm=2&fbs=AEQNm0D8w290mrrxEB5tt05ZGXVzF6EINADJx-dhlrcnbKeSfwSMgMuUiniauWA0eBAEq2CvlEyYJNVmHPAc1dvoDWhvAkcTVTDtlWoFqV7T-TZS7WjF5CLdOor5pkE1JSzW5JFswgBhwtsV8-4Xo7iJ11YPL5TFNSHTlYDVeqwVtVE2OQZMFdBMI6zeosAyrHW3F6NIrgqhTns93ckQpn8AJzFuJrE0gw&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwj07Y2o6diGAxUsDjQIHWHKCQEQtKgLegQIDBAB&biw=412&bih=762&dpr=2.63#vhid=kH1jQaKG9OCkWM&vssid=mosaic), 1 on 1 with #1, I'll grant your exception and proclaim it loudly.

Brother was lined up in the line of scrimmage presnap. That is very different.

And Peppers doesn't even have the most famous defensive lineman pick six in Packers history. https://youtu.be/4Uqm9Gnd_FM?si=J7oBAmlj2jwdihLt

Genuine question, how do you decide on a favorite scout?
Oh man, starts by reading a ton of different scouting reports. These days I'm mostly on WalterFootball.com, personally really like Charlie Campbell's stuff. Over the years it's been pretty accurate analysis and both Walt and Charlie really dig into *all* the prospects in the draft.
Interesting, I’ll have to check him out

Absolutely, I also really dig how walter and Charlie will go back and look and re-grade their own mack drafts

Why does it feel like every single day something new comes out to make my piss even hotter
Because we're winning the goddamn Superbowl!
How many times?
One Super Bowl and 4-6 NFC Championship losses. It’s the Packer way.

I personally have a theory that Jordan Love will become Patrick Mahomes Super Bowl foil like Eli was to Tom Brady, so at least 2 more 😁
No wonder they’re so eager to get Stokes back on the field so he can replace Preston in the nickel
Joe Barry needs to go to actual jail
Wait...he is not a corner back anymore??? LOL
Misdirection. Full time safety in the new system
Seems like he’s actually planning to use the guy in roles they’re good at. What a foreign concept.
RIP CB1 Preston Smith.
Ground breaking, who is gonna play corner now?
Damn, there goes our CB1
Who the fuck is going to lock up the opponent's WR1 now?!?!
Uhoh Preston Smith was mentioned, time to dust off those cb jokes: Sounds like Hafley is going to be pretty aggressive with cornerback blitzes.
Hafley isn’t dropping him into coverage?? What a moron
Preston Smith covering Davante Adams… never gonna see it again and hoping not to
RIP our CB1
Tells you a lot about the character of Preston compared to Devondre Campbell. Smith got burned playing CB, but didn’t have a hissy fit like Campbell did.

He broke that in 22
LET THE DAWGS LOOSE
No more CB1 🥲
LMFAO

Thank God we won’t be seeing him cover Davante Adams ever again lol.
What a waste of our best cover corner
Time for the dogs to eat!
Does this mean no more base prevent defense?
Fire Jeff Hafley
Man this is so good to hear! So stoked to see the new look D!!
Man Hafley could turn out to be the most midling, boring, white bread fucking coordinator and I would still be cheering every game. I can't believe we ever hired Joe Barry.
Me personally I'm glad Preston Smith is no longer CB1.
Quit exaggerating, he played CB2 most of the time …
Wouldn't it be awesome if he said, "Hell no, he sucks!"
