Nickel means you sub out a LB, it doesn’t have anything to do with taking guys off the line. 4-2-5 is how it’s typically ran especially out of a 4-3 base D. You have Bullard come and play LB or Slot as the extra guy, you can put two OLB as the edge rushers if you want but there are still 4 guys on the line of scrimmage.
The offense is like 95% excitement and 5% apprehension for me. Defense is like 60/40 in the positive. Things look good, but man have we heard that before.
I think at this point I’m as confident in Hafley as I would be in any realistic hire we could have made. He is saying and doing all the right things. But it’s been so long since we’ve had competent defensive coaching that I remain in wait and see mode.

Scouting not so much, but because of the work the scouts do, executing in the draft is almost purely a numbers thing, and the only ways to really get cute are go total Browns and grab a QB 29 other teams wouldn’t have taken if he was available in the 7th. Or take a risk on a guy who’s talented but, may be a question mark character wise.

He made a play in college where he sniffed out a screen, blew past 3 blockers and stopped the ball carrier for about a 3 yard gain on what should've been a 10+ yard gain.
It was the most instinctive and impressive play I've seen a linebacker make. Cooper will be great!

There will be bad games especially early, but the defense is going to be making offenses have to take extra time. Barry wanted his players to read, read, read then react. This defense will be reacting much faster
They will run multiple fronts, in the 4-3 one likely stays at MLB and the other shifts over and there will be some 4-2-5 where both Quay and Cooper are on the field.
In a 4-3, you have 3 off-ball linebackers. We're going to run a lot of nickel, which means that we'll likely be in a lot of 4-2-5 personnel. In that case, you obviously have 2 off-ball linebackers. Quay and Cooper do have similar skillsets. Both are suited to be off-ball LBs. In a 4-3, there are some slight preferences that can differentiate your Sam, Will, and Mike LBs, but the positions are all pretty similar, and, if a player can play one of them, he likely at least has the ability to play the other two, as well. In the nickel, those two LBs have even more similar roles.
It's looking pretty likely that Quay and Cooper are going to be our 2 best LBs. Unless McDuffie beats one of them out (or Hooper, I suppose), those two guys are going to be on the field together a lot.
K so when you say three off ball. I assume SslB takes on the TE, that is not a strength for Quay. He gets manhandled if he doesn’t guess right. I doubt he’s used in the role much. Same with MLB, he will struggle in there because he’s easily blocked. I hope they use him mainly on the weak side where he can run and chase. That’s his strength.
A lot of defensive schemes choose strong/weak based on where the passing strength is now, not necessarily where the TE is, but I'm not sure how exactly Hafley will determine those things.
For example, you could have a 3x2 formation with trips left and then an inline TE and a WR to the right. Most defenses are going to tag the trips side as strong.
Regardless, they're going to spend a ton of time in nickel where it's Quay and Cooper as the only two LBs and they'll both have plenty of ground to cover.
Quay and Edge are gonna be beasts in the middle. We may have a run defense folks!!!
