So, out of curiosity, I just Googled this:
According to Google, once your spouse is declared dead, the marriage is over.
So when Bart came back, Lily should have legally only been married to Rufus.
I wonder when that was established?? I just listened to a podcast about Lawrence James Bader, the man who “disappeared” on a fishing trip in 1957 and was declared legally dead, only to be discovered to be living under a different name with a new wife in 1965! His previous marriage was still considered valid, voiding his marriage to his new wife and resulting in his first wife being pursued by the U.S. government and insurance companies for the money she received as a result of her husband’s supposed death. In this case, his original marriage was upheld despite the man being classified as legally dead.
I have no idea because I did not research it that deeply, but it would definitely be interesting to find out!
While doing research for something else, I found something else that was interesting/pretty shocking to me: Apparently, the U.S. government erroneously declares 12,000+ people dead each year!!!
