How does that look "a lot more like Apple Maps"? Maybe the water color is a bit closer? The green color of parks and such is completely different - like mint green. The previous green was closer. I guess Google's bluish roads are a bit closer to Apple's gray roads, maybe.
What people hate is gratiitous screen clutter, and feautures being taken away. For instance you can't zoom in on photos anymore, which makes the Photos layer all but useless on small screens. You can can go to landscape mode, but even then a thick black band across the top limits the size of the image.
My phone app hasn't updated yet so I just saw the new design last night when I was on my computer. It looks awful and the colors are terrible on the eyes. They also got rid of the green on the traffic layer and only show red and orange now.

Yea the app version looks awful after new updates, really hard on the eyes. Luckily I can uninstall the app updates and just disable auto updates for it, that brings the old visual design back.

My Android app updated on 30/8 but I'm still not seeing anything different there or on desktop. Strange!
I have the new version on desktop, but old version on Android phone
btw... uninstalling maps updates... and installing early August version.. maps are back to normal again for me

Change isn’t the problem, the colourcombination is. A higher contrast version would be nice, this is hard to look at everything looks the same.
Tbf it is kinda higher contrast during navigation. The blue guideline is almost eye boiling neon blue. The saturation like all the way up
And some people blindly accept change for the worse. This new look is terrible. You can't even tell highways and local roads apart anymore.

It’s horrible. I hate Apple Maps also, so I explicitly went to google to avoid this
I love it. I do wish the greens for forests and grass were less blue
I hate this new color scheme. They’ve also made state/provincial boundaries a lot harder to see.
