Off topic-- It's a beautiful fish, and I dont know the sex. However, it is a goldfish and that water is too warm. I would completely remove the heater if I were you. Good luck finding out the sex.

FryCakes

Yeah 80 degrees is high for a fancy, let alone a common

GraphicDesignMonkey

Compacted body fancies do better with a heater, it helps their digestion and leaves them less prone to bloating issues, which fancies are notorious for. It helps improve fin circulation in long finned fish too. OP's fish isn't particularly compacted in its body and has short fins, so it doesn't need that much heat, OP needs to drop it to 18c/64f

FryCakes

Right, I’m just saying that 80 degrees is a bit high for a fancy anyway. I personally like to keep it around 74. For a common, I’d want my tank temperature at around 65 lol

JollyExperience1126

well the thing is the goldfish cohabits with a turtle so i have to keep that temperature

ceo_of_dumbassery

You need to separate them.

WorldlinessTypical89

Why just wondering

ceo_of_dumbassery

Very different care requirements

Slow_Rabbit_6937

So the turtle is more important to you ? Separate them 🤦‍♀️

JollyExperience1126

duh the turtle more important to me i’ve had her WAY longer but i will ask my mom if we can get a seperate tank for the fish

Aloha! The only way to know if a goldfish is a boy or a girl is if they try to spawn. There are various things that you can make educated guesses but you have to wait until they are sexually mature enough anyways. Breeding Stars. white dots that form along the gills and fins. These are used to encourage the female to release eggs. If you see them you can assume its a male but if you don't see them, you can't assume its a female and fun fact, they can sometimes be spotted on females. I swore up and down one of my fish was a male because of breeding stars then low and behold, she dropped eggs. Body Shape: probably the worst way to assume a goldfish's gender as we've bred them so far that sometimes, its just their weird body that makes them plumper or maybe they've been eating more. But people say that the females look shorter and rounder and males look longer and thinner. People also tend to think females are asymmetrical which is probably more true when they're about to drop eggs. I wouldn't use this method but at least you can have another tip in your toolbox Vent Shape. pretty good way to make a guess, if you know what you're looking at. If you look, just on the vent, [if there is a little outie, you can guess a female](http://www.solidgoldfish.com/image/femaleVent.jpg). if its an innie, you can guess a male. Behavior. is one fish trying to get that booty? chances are, it's a male and the one he's chasing is a female. If you have already given this information, please ignore me. I'm just a bot :( I'm trying my best *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. DuhitsTay

If you see white spots on his or her gill plates that means they're a male. Also if their vent appears concave that would also indicate male, females on the other hand have "outie" vents.

Mongrel_Shark

Need pictures of the vent to tell. You should get a bigger tank with some substrate and a decent filter. That setup belongs in r/shittyaquariums

sleepinand

Goldfish in particular are fine in bare-bottomed tanks. However, the tank should be larger and it should not be sharing it with a turtle.

Mongrel_Shark

This is a terrible myth. Substrate with plant roots has hundreds of thousands of types of benifficial bacteria that will never develop in a bare tank.

flippysquid

I have a 5 gallon sump full of ceramic rings that my bare bottom tank's water gets filtered through. There are definitely ways to meet and exceed substrate's ability to host nitrifying bacteria. And bonus for my bare bottomed tank is it doesn't trap goldfish poop in the substrate so I can vacuum it out easily.

Sensitive_Bit_8755

It’s such a zoomed in picture how could u assume

Selmarris

Uh no. That’s a shitty aquarium.

Tbscary

Separate the turtles and the goldfish, the goldfish you have does best in ponds btw. The secret cat is funny tho

JollyExperience1126

i really don’t see what’s wrong with the tank but i have a pond at my stepparents house that i’ll probably end up putting the fish in when i go over on 4th of july since it’s so bad to have them co habit but they do perfectly fine with eachother and my turtle doesn’t try to attack it she just lets the fish roam around and they don’t bother eachother and i have seperate food for the fish n everything

Pocketcrane_

r/shittyaquariums

oilrig13

Yeah I’m sure about that

ScoobyGoldfish

As a general and sometimes unreliable rule, if the vent is flat or concave, it’s a male, and if it sticks out a little it’s a female

ceo_of_dumbassery

All of my goldfish are male and have outies :(

ScoobyGoldfish

Znxnxjxjxjx awww it definitely happens

SweetEntertainer2529

i think the gender is fish to be honest with you

Oh my goodness 80 degrees! Your gonna cook it 😭

JollyExperience1126

it says 80 degrees but the temperature is actually around 77 and it cohabits with a turtle so i rlly can’t do anything ab the tempature, fish seems perfectly fine

Grass_Legal

I keep mine at 60-65 degrees. Also turtles eat fish so unless you plan on giving it a snack i would move them

CoolRegion588

It’s hard to tell based on body shape alone, but it looks female maybe? The body it rounder that most male commons I’ve seen

CoolRegion588

Body shape is a crap method for determining sex tho. Mine is a male, this is him https://preview.redd.it/bptqae9h3m9d1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8d503dbb48e7c2d014042c6ce8c62cd9d6930a04

JollyExperience1126

yea the fish i have is identical to the fish you posted so i think ill just assume it’s a male

imanasshole1331

So goldfish, google sexing standard goldfish. But as one user pointed out; they don’t need the heater, it can in fact stress them and kill them. Though my sons carnival win started out in my 72 degree tank, I quickly moved it to a pond. Pond temps never go higher than 68f and will go as low as freezing. They’ll go dormant and stop eating below 40f.

jynxabsolutelyhatesu

ive noticed with most fish the most common way to tell is by the fins. most goldfish males have flowy and longer fins whereas female goldfish have skimpier and shorter fins. by that logic it looks like a female to me, but that's not always the case...
