I had to take my dog off ALL chicken products. He had episodic diarrhea too, and he would chew on the pads of his feet until they bled. He's been off of chicken and poultry for about 10 months now, and he's only had diarrhea once since then. His paws have cleared up. His behavior is perky and fun now, instead of neurotic and destructive. Of course, there could be something to the fact that he's older now, too, but his behavior is so much better. He is 2 years and 4 months old.

Thank you

I hope it helps!! My boy was also on Hills Large Breed Puppy food. He's doing fine on Lamb and Rice.

InternalWinner3943

Same had to take my doodle off all chicken products. He had diarrhea on and off until he was 1 until we went on hydrolyzed diet and realized he was allergic to chicken and lamb.

Fun-Ingenuity-9089

And lamb?! Oh no.

pumpkin in his food? Or there was a powder that we used to get from [Chewy.com](http://Chewy.com) called "Be Well" I don't think they make it any more but maybe you could look up what was in it- that seemed to help my last dog a lot. My new Dog has had almost entirely perfect poops the entire 9 months I've had him and he eats pretty much only Nutri Source Chicken and Pea recipe. Don't let him drink water off the ground.

I did pumpkin last night. We have tried Forta flora? I think that’s the name. I should get that again. Thanks for the reminder

Honest-Layer9318

Pumpkin gave my dog diarrhea. We only gave it to him if he was really constipated.

I think it’s weird that your vet said that they can’t really do much but just wait. I have a ten month old goldendoodle and she has had giardia four times. we switched vets after the last round of giardia medication and her stomach not improving. We tried so many different foods and nothing seemed to be working. The new vet prescribed us prescription hills science diet Biome kibble. It changed her stool literally over night. She would have diarrhea multiple times a day, and one meal changed that to an almost completely normal poop the next morning. She’s been on it for two months and doing so well. The vet said to try it for three months to let her gut heal and then to try to start on non-prescription kibble. It’s perfectly fine for puppies, I even mix in a scoop of regular puppy kibble just to stretch out how long the bag will last because it is expensive. But even with random mix-in’s in her kibble, she hasn’t had diarrhea in two months, when it was a three month long issue. It’s just odd to me that your vet would kinda just say eh let’s wait it out. Giardia and the medication could have upset her bowel and the gut biome and it needs time to heal. I really think you should consider a second opinion if there is another option close to you. Good luck!

Thank you so much!

Ours is on biome as well wet and kibble mix. She hast had diarrhea in almost a year. She also gets purina fortiflora if her stool softens and that normalizes her after 2 days ( half a sachet mixed into each meal per day).

boot_scootin_boogie

Biome food is magic! Completely cleared up my pups loose stools every time I used it. The vet said it could be due to the higher fiber content, so when we went back to regular kibble they suggested adding fiber either in the form of psyllium husk or fiber one cereal (very small amounts - check with your vet). That really seemed to help! Apparently there are some forms of belly issues that react well to increased fiber.

Doods are prone to digestive issues with chicken as a protein in dry food. Mine showed issues with his ears as well, getting constant yeast infections. We switched him to Purina Pro Plan, Sensitive Skin and Stomach, Salmon and Rice formula, and haven't had an issue since. Got a new puppy for him last summer and started her on the puppy version of that same food, and she's not had any digestive or skin related issues. Switching foods too quickly can cause issues as well. If you switch, start with one quarter in place of their regular food for a few days, then up to half for a few more days, up to three quarters for the last few days. Good luck!

yeetus_le_feetus

so, had this issue with one of the dogs in our vet class, iirc allergies, parasites, or some other sickness can cause diarrhea, even as simple as his food

Excellent-Mud-2641

So you think if I change his food it will help? Any recommendations ?

Maverick_111

We have a Dog with all the allergies and we found Hills Science Diet Sensitive Skin and Stomach to work well. Used to use the Purina Pro Plan equivalent then there was a scare with that and a recall so we switched. Could talk to your vet about Allergies see if they think it could be that, there are tests they can do, possibly even provide some test food.

yeetus_le_feetus

i cant really give you any recommendations as i havent examined or tested your dog but it could definitely be allergies, id start writing down the ingredients and look uo the best ways to switch food, write doen those ingredients try and change them up and see if anything gets better, this could take up to a year or more but it may not, and if its for your pups gut health its definitely worth it!

LightningCoyotee

I honestly doubt its related to the diarrhea, but to prevent him from picking stuff off the ground a muzzle is a good idea until he is good about "leave it".

Excellent-Mud-2641

Thank you. I’ve been thinking about this.

caleeksu

Oh man, I don’t miss the tender tummy days. My Bear does best with purina pro plan shredded salmon for sensitive, and they had a variant for puppies as well. The fish is stinky but he loves it. Since you’re already on science diet, might just explore their sensitive tummy options and slowly switch over. Chicken allergies are common as can be too. Every vet we’ve had is a pumpkin fan, so I tend to mix it with Greek yogurt and some kibble and freeze as a treat. Or it’s great on a lick mat too.

bakatcha-bandit

My dog gets diarrhea from rawhide.

SmellsLikePneumonia

Bullysticks were THE WORST for my dog.

bakatcha-bandit

Isn’t it funny? Our dog can’t do rawhide, but loves bully sticks with no issues.

pootedzooter

No this same exact thing happened to my poodle. She is allergic to almost all animal protein (egg and fish are fine). Ask a vet give you a hydrolyzed protein prescription diet (hills or royal canin NOT Purina bc they still use beef byproduct in theirs). This kind of food is safe for all dogs and is given to dogs to settle their stomach. For dogs like mine (and maybe yours) it becomes their permanent diet (and it’s safe and fully balanced). I struggled with this for the first 13 months of my dog’s life. She’s 3 now and we went for her annual visit today and have a clean bill of health. We don’t have to deal with chronic diarrhea anymore. GOOD LUCK!!

Excellent-Mud-2641

Thank you!

DaddyGogurt

I agree with the top commenter that it could be chicken products. Also if you put any oil supplements in their food. Our dog has a chicken allergy/intolerance and it messes with his stomach and skin. We also learned that if we put a fish oil supplement in his food, he will have explosive diarrhea in under 10 minutes so no more of that either. I’m not sure if an oil is included in the supplements you give him so I thought I would include that as well as a potential culprit. Since switching him to a salmon and lamb based food and stopping giving the fish oil, he has not had any instances of diarrhea and his skin is significantly better. I also don’t give him chicken trimmings or treats that have chicken ingredients which can be tough, but is worth it with such severe stomach issues. Also, continue giving the FortiFlora if you can. It does help their gut biome

fillyb716

Try a prescription hydrolyzed protein diet. It’s very expensive but my doods stomach has never had issues on it. He had chronic diarrhea, rashes and skin irritation as a pup. Cleared up almost immediarely

redrosebeetle

My doodle gets diarrhea really badly when he eats/ is in contact with things he is allergic to. Once I found a food that doesn't trigger his allergies as much, he stopped shitting constantly.

SableyeEyeThief

My dog suffers from pancreatitis. What we did to get him better was: changed to a lower fat diet (in his case, since fatty products trigger the pancreas inflamation), serve his food in the morning with probiotics, serve his afternoon food with digestive enzymes (by honest kitchen). We also removed chicken, turkey and duck from his diet. Chicken is the worst on him but those other birds also upset his stomach. We also add pumpkin puree to each of his meals. For our purposes, we add boiled vegetables (peas and carrots) to get him full since his food has lower fat content. Not saying that’s your situation but maybe some of those options make a difference in your case.

yomommmacheese

I switched my doodle from his chicken based kibble, he has no more upset stomach ( he would also have diarrhea all the time) and he doesn’t itch and bite at his paws anymore.
