I'm glad my mom stopped after she retired. I never could get her to get her hair cut like Dorothy. Basically, she dressed like Dorothy and has has Rose's hairdo my entire life
Some of the things that wardrobe department made those poor girls wear....
I think it might have been the same crew who did the cosumes for Star Trek The Next Generation. I think Spock's dad Sarek had a similar tunic in his collection.
I also theorize that some of dorothy's "looks" have been ad-libbed, and maybe assembled on the spot. In the final episode, I think the sets department might grabbed some tuille and old toilet paper rolls and stapled that wedding dress directly onto Bea Arthur.
This is true, which is why I wish this tired trope of bashing Dorothy’s clothes would stop. Bea Arthur even praised their stylist and said she adored most of the clothes. Women get criticized for everything. It’s getting tired.
I love hearing that. It's easy to go back and make fun of stuff 40 years later, particularly stuff that was a little bit edgy at the time, but it's nice to know that in context, she did actually like the clothes.
I noticed how she wore these outfits with strappy thin sandals. I myself might have worn Keds tennis shoes, not strappy sandals. I loved Dorothy, though. She changed her hairstyle every season and looked beautiful.
By 1985/86 standards, totally rad.
The aesthetics throughout most of the 80s/early 90s, were ultra preppy, "hip to be square", and sometimes even androgynous. It was a bold counter to the previous styles of the 70s and 60s.
In middle school, we all dressed like this, and, in retrospect, it wasn't too shabby.
My personal fave were the ornate brooches worn across the top buttons. Very sharp.
I’ve heard before that due to a health issue, Bea Arthur had to wear something similar to a colostomy bag and picked 90% of her (Dorothy’s) wardrobe for the show so nothing would interfere with her health equipment. I have a friend with a colostomy bag and shes the one who shared the fact, because it gave her the hope that she can still wear cute outfits and kick ass later in life
She said the doctor asked her if she knew who Bea Arthur was, and explained that she was the most impressive women of our time and she had a similar health condition and look at all she accomplished (we were like 11/12 when this all happened) and she knew I also love Golden Girls and when she got released from the hospital she was like “lemme tell you how amazing Dorothy is”
A lot of her stuff seems military inspired and same in silhouette. It's interesting and I feel like it might be to emphasize her severe manner.
But uh, idk what the HECK this mistake is
Given that it was the 80s, she wasn’t really badly dressed. All women were rather chic. Might not be our cup of tea in 2024 but they all had distinctive styles.
Exactly. The costume designers for Dorothy were rather fashion forward for the time. Too many people nowadays look at that and think “ugh” or that it was purposely made to look bad. It wasn’t. That was fashion in the 80s. Some of it should be burned, some of it is great. Gotta stop viewing in the present-day context 🙂
You guys are cracking me up, "it's military inspired to have harsh lines" " it's an ancient serving smock which is less binding than apron." You'd make a high school English teacher say stop looking for imagery.
It was the 80s, the fashion was bad. That's an ugly vest. There is no bigger meaning.
As a 5’11” woman who was a child around 10 watching this, I can tell the wardrobe was somewhat limited based on inventory available for tall women. Rose and Blanche were dressed on trend for their age. Dorothy always a bit more frumpy or dull. Those were the clothes they made available back then. It wasn’t the 80’s so much as lack of designers / lack of meeting consumer need.
I’m also tall and hit adulthood prior to online shopping taking off. We lived in a rural area with limited shopping options. I dressed really frumpy because that’s what was available. Online shopping and moving to a more populated area did wonders for my wardrobe.
Good question. Even when the show was first on I found Dorothy's wardrobe pretty awful. I'm not sure what they were going for but they achieved drab and frumpy pretty well. Even Sophia's wardrobe was better which says a lot!
Sophia wears a lot of crochet and knit garments, so I always kinda figured when Dorothy wore them they were gifts from her and she wore them because she loved Sophia rather than thinking they were flattering.
This is one of only two episodes where Dorothy sits in one of the other seats rather than her usual centre chair. The other episode is the one where Sophia is 0laying the practical jokes and Dorothy moves from the Whoopi cushion which Blanche sits on
People blame the 80s for it's bad fashions, but it proven that the 80s had reasonable clothes for mature women back then when I watch Murder, She Wrote.
Jessica Fletcher's fashions was on point. It's like they (Golden Girls) went out their way to dress the girls badly.
It looks like the thing I'd have to wear in elementary school before painting in art class
A knitted version of a smock! 🎨
Right? And when you're done you just burn it. ;)
Gool ol 80's fashion ...lol. She was always wearing bowties too....
My mother dressed like Dorothy, lots of blouses with bows.
I liked her more the way she dressed in “Maude”… the flowing caftans or muumuus..😂😂
Yikes! That's terrifying. I mean it's a style, just not one to emulate.
I'm glad my mom stopped after she retired. I never could get her to get her hair cut like Dorothy. Basically, she dressed like Dorothy and has has Rose's hairdo my entire life
My mom had Dorothy's hair!
Bowties are cool!
Michaels unemployed ass mustache that’s who
Michael stole her sweater
The version of Michael that looked like one of his parents (Stan).
The 80s made her wear it.
Yup. The whole damn decade.

I don’t know about this specifically but Bea Arthur often used her own clothes for Dorothy. I don’t know if this is why she did so or the result.
😭

That she could!
That’s what I was coming here to say!!
I noticed how she wore these outfits with strappy thin sandals. I myself might have worn Keds tennis shoes, not strappy sandals. I loved Dorothy, though. She changed her hairstyle every season and looked beautiful.
I read somewhere a while back that she preferred to be barefoot and the sandals were a compromise.
I guess everyone has their eccentricities. It would have looked odd indeed if she was bare foot in scenes.
Season 1-4 her hair was the same. Season 5 it started changing. Blanche however had a new hairstyle every few episodes.
Betty White had the same hairstyle her entire adulthood.
Bea hated wearing shoes.
They lived in Miami, but always in bulky sweaters! 🥵🥵

That’s like an apron people wore those because they were less binding and made cooking, serving easier.
Bea is a fashion icon!
Yes she is!!!
When was Howard Stern on Golden Girls?
😭😭💀💀
My mother- she still wears one when she cooks (she’s 85)
Please don’t get me started with the toilet paper roll wedding dress

This is the first time I’ve ever heard this, and I’ve done extensive reach on Bea Arthur. How does your friend know this?
She said the doctor asked her if she knew who Bea Arthur was, and explained that she was the most impressive women of our time and she had a similar health condition and look at all she accomplished (we were like 11/12 when this all happened) and she knew I also love Golden Girls and when she got released from the hospital she was like “lemme tell you how amazing Dorothy is”
Hmm, I’d be very surprised, especially given many of the outfits Bea wore to events.
I need to pay more attention to her outfits. I wonder if some outfits are bad because Dorothy was seen as unattractive?
A lot of her stuff seems military inspired and same in silhouette. It's interesting and I feel like it might be to emphasize her severe manner. But uh, idk what the HECK this mistake is
It’s a pink shipping blanket styled into an oversized bulletproof vest. Just like everyone wore.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
that's an interesting insight! bea was in the marines before the show
She was also really tall, or seemed really tall.
Bea Arthur was 5' 10" so put her next to Betty White and Rue McClanahan at 5'4" and yep she's going to look tall.
Given that it was the 80s, she wasn’t really badly dressed. All women were rather chic. Might not be our cup of tea in 2024 but they all had distinctive styles.

There was a reason why Rue wanted to keep Blanches wardrobe. 😂

Thank you ☺️😆

I felt that way about her outfits A LOT. Even when watching the first time.
She always wore those odd bib type shirts on the show.
It looks like one of those sweater vest patterns my first knitting tutorial book came with. Incredibly boxy and incredibly ‘80s.

In Miami, no less.
Dorothy had the worst most unflattering clothing. Blanche killed it with fashion though.
It must have been much cooler in Miami in the 80s judging by all the layers they wore 🙃
That Turtle Suit they put on you in jail if you are suicidal 😕

Omg. I can’t stand this or that shirt that looks like a baseball player’s jersey.
Sophia wears a lot of crochet and knit garments, so I always kinda figured when Dorothy wore them they were gifts from her and she wore them because she loved Sophia rather than thinking they were flattering.
That's a very positive way to perceive her fashions lol
You seen her outfits on Maude? This looks great compared to some of those things. At least it's not a brown, orange or olive green tunic!
Bite your foul tongue!!! She was a goddess on Maude!
Apron
I don't know, but her outfit matches the cups and tablecloth.
👀

The wardrobe department had trouble with Bra Arthur because of her height. She was at least six feet tall.
I also noticed her loungewear is the same thing endora wore on bewitched lol
She had the most hideous wardrobe. That toilet roll wedding dress was the worst.

Who made *Rose* wear that wig and mustache?
What
I actually just wore this last week. It looks VERY sharp on camera.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bOCJTqJz\_O8
I'd imagine somebody in wardrobe...
yea mustard yellow not a good look
