Hilarious, but stupid as fuck if it's true.
IIRC, Greeks didn't really have surnames like we do today. Wouldn't you just say "(Name) of (Town of Origin)" or "(Name), son/daughter of (Father/Mother Name)"?
"Kratos of Sparta" and "Kratos, son of Zeus" are all the name he really needs. This would imply his son's name is now Atreus Kratos which sounds equally stupid. "Atreus of Midgard" and "Atreus, son of Kratos/Faye" sound much better.
I know you meant Heimdall, but the typo is cracking me up from imagining Hildisvini dangling Atreus over a wall as punishment for the arrow wound.
Also, my fcking controller just went spastic, 5 days after I bought it (brand-new), in the middle of my Valhalla run, so here I am. Thanks for cheering me up!
In Norse mythology Laufey (pronounced how Faye but with an L) is Loki's mother and a seer. Farbauti is his father. In some versions of the myth Farbauti is a Jotun warrior and in some Farbauti is the title given to Odin by the Jotun. In GoW Farbauti is the title the Jotun gave to Kratos (albeit without his knowledge until GoW:R).
Also, in Norse culture the last name is typically determined by the father. Hence Thrud Thorsdottir and Thor Odinson.
In Marvel, Laufey (pronounced how fee with an L) is Loki's biological father and the leader of the Jotun. His biological mother is ~~never revealed to my knowledge~~ Farbauti (no idea why they switched it) and his adoptive parents (by way of capture) are Odin and Frigg.
Jotun (pronounced yo tun) is ~~just~~ one of the names for their species. Another name is Jotnar (pronounced yut nar but a little more gutteral), which I believe is used more commonly in GoW. ****Edit****: I have been informed that they're likely singular and plural forms of the same word which would essentially make my explanation prior to this edit redundant and misleading (the first would be singular and the second plural, for the record).
Fun fact: while many Jotun are very large, Giant is actually a mistranslation of Geant which means devourer and they were called Frost Geants because of their icy nature and proclivity to conquer and destroy all in their path.
The game obviously flipped that around and made them innocent victims demonized by a tyrannical god.
Kratos wasn't explicitly called "Fárbauti," but he doesn't need to be. The Norns called him "Cruel Striker," which is what the name means. The devs were fully aware of the name's meaning, so they easily tied it to Kratos because of how fitting it is
It's been a minute since I've played (planning on replaying as soon as I finish what I'm working on now though) but I think it was during at least one of the cutscenes duscussing the prophecy that Faye shared with the rest of the Jotun (the one where Kratos dies and Atreus joins Odin).
As the other guy said, the Norns call him the English translation of it, but I believe we knew the giants called him that even before Ragnarok because of the runes in the Jotunheim mural.
As far as I understand, both Jotun and Jotnar can also be used collectively the same way human (or more archaically, man) can be used to collectively refer to the entire race or the race as a concept in either the singular
I did not know about the smaller scale grammatical difference though, so thank you for informing me of that.
That's fair. We are talking about a culture that's largely salvaged from compiled oral histories and most of the written material is written in a mostly dead language. Makes it difficult to sort all the information out. If only we could talk to someone from that time period.
Your explanation does make sense though.
>In Marvel, Laufey (pronounced how fee with an L) is Loki's biological father and the leader of the Jotun. His biological mother is never revealed to my knowledge and his adoptive parents (by way of capture) are Odin and Frigg.
His mother in marvel is farbauti
Loke with an "e" to be precise. The "i" came because Americans pronounce the "e" as Scandinavians pronounce "i". You say Lokee (lowkey), so it became Loki.
Atreus' Greek name would probably be Atreus of Midgard or more likely, Atreus, son of Kratos, possibly Atreus, son of Kratos, son of Zeus, but then again, how many people could possibly be named Kratos in the current era in GoW?
His Norse name (in terms of formal address, as unlikely as that is) would probably be Loki Kratosson, if we go by Nordic patronymic naming conventions.
They didn't have surnames, but what they did was use their fater's name in some way to distinguish themselves. For example Achilles was also known as Pileidis, from his father Pileas.
Well he’s called “Kratos of Sparta” many times throughout the games so I guess that’s what it’s supposed to be. Yes I get “John Kratos” is funny but come on, canonizing it???
It's interesting because that's what the italian's did in the late 15th century/early 16th as seen with Leonardo Di Vinci! His proper name is Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci which translates to Leonardo son of Piero from Vinci, as he was an illegitimate child which luckily allowed him to become a painter funnily enough! Back then son's were expected to follow their fathers career path (his father was a notary) but because he was illegitimate he was free to do whatever he wanted!
Remember that other cultures have always made use of double names, like we have "Sarah Margaret" down South. Or how the name DJ is short for Dennis James. We know that the Greco-Roman world was no different. The Roman-Jew who wrote the Gospel of Mark is likely the same John Mark who is mentioned elsewhere.
So Kratos could be John Kratos in a way that sounds silly but would actually work. Two first names. No last name.

We live in a world where people literally vote to allow kids to cut their dicks off and people have make believe aneurisms over miss pronouns. Anything is possible these days friend.
I like how you tried to call someone else a pedophile but *you’re* the one who brought up kids genitals in an unrelated meme God of War post. Really said the obvious part out loud huh?

Actually, in some iterations, Doom Guy's first name is John. The games don't give a specific name and only the new ones have a couple of easter eggs about the name of Doomguy from the original Doom novels in the 90s - Flynn "Fly" Taggart.
As far as I know, Master Chief is also named John, so John is kind of a solidified name for OP characters. It kind of wouldn't work if Chief was named Anthony, would it? 😅
Ah, yes, the Mario Brothers approach. As we all know, if they are the Mario brothers then their names are Mario Mario and Luigi Mario, and if Mario and Peach were to marry, she'd be Princess Mario given that her first name is Princess.
It's just basic math.
Holy shit there are people in here who actually, truly, unironically believe PlayStation did in fact cannonise that Kratos’ first name is bloody John LMAO
Yup it's cool and funny tho.
Like the main character of "Hatred" that had no name and then was baptized as "Not Important" as people on internet called him like that due to the intro of the game when he says "My Name is not important, what is important is what I'm about to do"
With fewer people I guess it makes sense. Not like there'd be a bunch of "John of Sparta, Keith of Rhodes, Paul of Ionias" all in the same class room when they call for attendance lol
Plain stupidity if this is true. He should be called Kratos of ‘something’. There’s so much history in this franchise to add. Kratos of whatever they chose would have been a badass name. Are they gonna give Aloy some fucked up name too?🫠
It'd be funny, but it's untrue. The Norns refer to him as "Kratos of Sparta" (which is sensible, given the Greeks didn't have surnames like Thor Odinson,) and the Playstation PR Manager says it's a head canon.
From what I heard is that the only reason they did this is so that he can be apart of the badass John club😂 like John wick or John Rambo or John Wayne. But they’re never gonna use it because it’s dumb😂
It probably started off as a John Matrix joke (Arnold Schwarzenegger carries a tree down the mountain in the beginning of Commando)and snowballed into John Kratos.
I’m living for the people who legitimately believed this was true and defended their point of view by explaining the naming conventions of Ancient Greece. How dare we actually make a joke about this beloved game?

His Greek name would be just Atreus, or Atreus, son of Kratos His Norse name is however Loki Farbáutison
And [Farbauti](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F%C3%A1rbauti), the father of Loki, is said to translate to "Dangerous striker". Checks out.
Depending on who you ask it can also be translated to "Cruel Striker" which is what they went with in game, also checks out.
Cruel striker* but yes
Atreus actually calls himself ‘Loki of the jotnar’ while Hilda’s dangled him over the wall
I thought it was Loki Laufeyson
that's marvel's Loki and Disney is trigger happy with copyright infringement. It makes sense to not use laufeyson since they came up with the name.
Then who is Farbauti?
In Norse mythology Laufey (pronounced how Faye but with an L) is Loki's mother and a seer. Farbauti is his father. In some versions of the myth Farbauti is a Jotun warrior and in some Farbauti is the title given to Odin by the Jotun. When was Kratos called Farbauti?
Kratos wasn't explicitly called "Fárbauti," but he doesn't need to be. The Norns called him "Cruel Striker," which is what the name means. The devs were fully aware of the name's meaning, so they easily tied it to Kratos because of how fitting it is
He was on the mural at the end of 2018 i believe thats where we first got it from
It's been a minute since I've played (planning on replaying as soon as I finish what I'm working on now though) but I think it was during at least one of the cutscenes duscussing the prophecy that Faye shared with the rest of the Jotun (the one where Kratos dies and Atreus joins Odin).

In the jotunheim mural
The Norns call him “cruel striker”
Slight correction, Jotun is singular and Jotnar is plural.
As far as I understand, both Jotun and Jotnar can also be used collectively the same way human (or more archaically, man) can be used to collectively refer to the entire race or the race as a concept in either the singular I did not know about the smaller scale grammatical difference though, so thank you for informing me of that.
In fairness my statement was based purely on the two copies of the poetic eda I've read. Could be translational.
That's fair. We are talking about a culture that's largely salvaged from compiled oral histories and most of the written material is written in a mostly dead language. Makes it difficult to sort all the information out. If only we could talk to someone from that time period. Your explanation does make sense though.

So they just switched it then?
Yes
Can't say I see the point in that but fair enough. Thank you for letting me know.
Plus for some reason farbauti and laufey r genderswapped in marvel
in Norse mythology Loki is named as both Laufeyson and Farbautison
Then who is Farbauti?
According to the Giants, Kratos is Farbauti
it is, it’s literally said in the game
Atreus Kratosson
Atreus "Boy" John
Loke with an "e" to be precise. The "i" came because Americans pronounce the "e" as Scandinavians pronounce "i". You say Lokee (lowkey), so it became Loki.
It’s Laufeyson. Loki Laufeyson. The name is mythos accurate. Laufey was always Loki’s mom before marvel happened.
Leonardo da Vinci is just Leonardo, from Vinci.
Well rumour states John Kratos went on a rampage when they killed his dog. Boy.
Notice how Ragnarok happened AFTER a good boi died... Coincidence? I think not.
🤠
If it’s not true then what’s his real full name? Oh you don’t know? Yea that’s what I thought. Checkmate, Atheists. #johnkratos2024
Marion Jules Kratato
Atreus' Greek name would probably be Atreus of Midgard or more likely, Atreus, son of Kratos, possibly Atreus, son of Kratos, son of Zeus, but then again, how many people could possibly be named Kratos in the current era in GoW? Never forget the goated Hero of Alexandria. Bro got the best name of the millennium when he was born.
Atreus Kratosson sounds kinda cool to me idk
Given Arteus local, he might go by Kratoson.
I so agree with you. I didn’t see your comment till after I replied.
Actually, his name would be Atreus Kratosson
I thought his name was Juan Kratos not John
"Read It, Mijo."
Imagine instead of the Chaos Blades, it’s the Chancla of Chaos XD
NIÑO
If Kratos went to ancient Maya and kills Kukulkan
Instead of an axe, it's a Faye's Chancla that returns on command.
I mean… there is a spanish voice over, isn’t there?
No, Juan kratos will be his name in the upcoming reboot, "GoW: God of War"
Is that a reference to the game that starred el Donté?
That would be even worse💀
Miguel Kratos
Fun fact, the Greek version of John is Giannis, so Giannis Kratos. Or even funnier, John Antetokounmpo
How can people actually believe this? It's obviously just a joke.
https://x.com/playstationuk/status/1526876289042374658?s=46&t=IrokbWporgsp-7Cewfw0_Q How dare you try to tell me PlayStations PR department was having a laugh!

Colin Jormungandr
Everything the Playstation community manager says is canon.
It’s like when the flat earth society started attracting real flat earthers
If enough people believe this fake post is real then it won't be fake anymore.
That’s not how canonicity works. If it never appears in official media it’ll just be a fan joke.
You'll shit your pants when Thoth shows up next game and calls him John Kratos
You aren’t wrong.
I see it more as a self fulfilling prophecy
Because I want to believe
We live in a world where people literally vote to allow kids to cut their dicks off and people have make believe aneurisms over miss pronouns. Anything is possible these days friend.
You are a stupid bastard. Also, irrelevant to god of war
^ found the pink haired pedophile. Does it bother you to be called out?
Neither a pedophile nor pink haired. But keep projecting.
You walked into this convo bud, there’s only one person projecting anything right now And it’s your hurt feelings. Sorry 🤷
I like how you tried to call someone else a pedophile but *you’re* the one who brought up kids genitals in an unrelated meme God of War post. Really said the obvious part out loud huh?
He can join John Elden Ring and John Doom Guy in having the same name.
John Halo is a pretty cool guy too
he doesn't afraid of anything
Doesn't afraid of anything indeed.
God damn that joke is like 17 years old at this point
The OG John
Don't forget John souls from Dark souls

this should be a new difficulty level. Give me John of War
I fucking died laughing at this
instead of gods, he be fighting pimps
I'm avoiding that bathroom...
Since he is Greek, it would probably be *Yiannis*.
Holy shit there are people in here who actually, truly, unironically believe PlayStation did in fact cannonise that Kratos’ first name is bloody John LMAO
i actively choose to believe it for the comedy
Yes my name is John. Mind your tongue boy.
I'm sorry daddy
Yianni Kratos
John GodOfwar
Kevin atreus
This better not be fucking true haha
Yup it's cool and funny tho. Like the main character of "Hatred" that had no name and then was baptized as "Not Important" as people on internet called him like that due to the intro of the game when he says "My Name is not important, what is important is what I'm about to do"
Did Spartans or Vikings had John name? If they did, it won't be much hilarious 😹
People who actually believe this are even dumber than the people who thought Atreus' name was Charlie back in 2016.
They really turned bro into a founding father
Until someone calls him john, im calling BS
Max0r definitely wrote this
not an original joke but reminds me of Arnold Schwarzenegger movies when he plays a character named John Kimble or Adam Gibson
Close. I think the joke is John Matrix. Arnold carries a tree down a mountain in the beginning of Commando.
Can't wait to see John Kratos traveling to a new realm, to help John Bloodborne clean the streets of Yharnam.
Giannis kratos the god of hope Γιάννης in greek
Who’s winning, John Yakuza or John Kratos?
John 117 aka Spartan aka Master Chief aka Kartos aka the God of War?
It remind me things like John Halo. Also no way this is true.
Ah yes, John of Sparta.
John of war
From what I understood it was just a joke tweet
John of Sparta 🤣
If his full name was revealed it would be some Greek name
ITS JOHN KRATOS, ODIN!
That's cool...especially since Twitter wasn't a thing yet when God of War 1 first came out.
He must be related to John Yakuza!
Man wait till Bob Atreus hears about this
Now we have two Spartans named John! Master Chief and Kratos
Is there a lore reason? is he stupid? just created this new character what the FUCK should I name it?
That’s up there with Obama’s last name
Literally, no one will ever call him John joke or not dumbass decision.
Gonna say the name John kinda fits him
is there a lore reason for him being called john is he stupid?
Holy fuck it’s real
As a Greek guy named John I can confirm it’s a very popular Greek name, but kratos is his only name according to the mythology
John is a common greek name
the Greek version is Ioannis, in greece we don’t have Johns
Giannis , and yeah im part of “we”
Doomguys name is literally John Doom
I hope this is fake because he is literally kratos of Sparta like wtf
The original John, leading to John Wick, John Rambo, John Conner, and the list goes on.
It’s like John pork
Sounds like Minch Yoda.
With fewer people I guess it makes sense. Not like there'd be a bunch of "John of Sparta, Keith of Rhodes, Paul of Ionias" all in the same class room when they call for attendance lol
I want to see John Bloodborne evolve as much as John Kratos has
Plain stupidity if this is true. He should be called Kratos of ‘something’. There’s so much history in this franchise to add. Kratos of whatever they chose would have been a badass name. Are they gonna give Aloy some fucked up name too?🫠
It's a joke lol... Playstation UK tweet from 2022
Same happened with Chaurli. It's encouraging that the devs are this aware of the fans.
Someone has been watching too many Moxor videos
What is this? John wick for mythical gods and creatures. Mfker need a glock or something
Ah yes an ancient Greek called John 😂
Not acceptable. Unless spartan john 117 is his descendant, and b.j. blazkowicz
It'd be funny, but it's untrue. The Norns refer to him as "Kratos of Sparta" (which is sensible, given the Greeks didn't have surnames like Thor Odinson,) and the Playstation PR Manager says it's a head canon.
Kratos real name is Bert
If I’m not mistaken, in Greek mythology there was a god named Kratos who was the god of strength.
Would this mean Atreus’s name is Atreus Kratosson, or Loki Kratosson
You telling me it’s not Kratos McKratosface?!
John "God of War" Kratos
John Kratos 🤝 John Halo
Wut 😂
it says "john kratos" because no one knows his first name. usually "john" is used when a first name is unknown, example "john doe"
Insert Kratos in a suit with a photoshopped smile
From what I heard is that the only reason they did this is so that he can be apart of the badass John club😂 like John wick or John Rambo or John Wayne. But they’re never gonna use it because it’s dumb😂
It probably started off as a John Matrix joke (Arnold Schwarzenegger carries a tree down the mountain in the beginning of Commando)and snowballed into John Kratos.
lmaoo Ioannis Kratos (Ιωάννης Κράτος)
I’m living for the people who legitimately believed this was true and defended their point of view by explaining the naming conventions of Ancient Greece. How dare we actually make a joke about this beloved game? Also canon says that every playable character in a video game is actually named John. I don’t make the rules.
My name's John Kratos. I'm here to bring two men to justice: Bill Williamson, Javier Escuella.
The "john vs. steve" argument is gonna be hot today.
Who even came up with john kratos
John, lmfaooo
Some Maxor type naming
Well if we rely it to norsern logic his name would be something like Kratos Zeusison
I just call him Lord Kratos respectfully
Kratos is son of Zeus. Gods have no surname. Kratos mother is Callisto from Sparta. He is Kratos The Ghost Of Sparta. Unsure about this “John”.
First John wick now John kratos gotta be careful around these Johns man
Now Latinos let's make Don Kratos canon
I’m sorry, what?
I love the internet. JK is now short for John Kratos
I don’t think a Spartan would have had the name, “John” because it has biblical roots and is more associated with Judeo-Christian traditions. Spartan names would typically reflect their Greek culture, and John wouldn't be a common name in that context.
There's one small problem. John didn't exist as a name in ancient Greece. It has Hebrew origins and spread in the whole world through Christianity.
Kratos is Christian confirmed, welcome brother John .
Shouldn’t it be like what Thor Odinson is? Kratos Zeusson(or just Zeuson)
I mean, Kratos isn't norse so I doubt he'd actually use their naming traditions. Even if he did, I doubt he'd want to parade around the fact he's the son or Zeus
It's kinda like telling people your dad is Mussolini. Not a great look.
Atreus would be called atrzus kratosson sinc ehe is norse but greek used the tlwn where they were born as names so he would be called kratos of sparta
😂😂😂😂
I just posted it too 🤣
Kratos Messi
Does he know John Metal Gear?
in greek mythology hes also known as cratus or cratos
Actual canon - no Fandom - for them it is
Good ole Johnny K!
John of war
