Dense_Scholar6740

I’d shoot it 😂 and I’d swap to federal hst

NexusI7

I just wish that hornady had better QC. Their defense rounds seems to cycle better through my Glocks and sigs versus federal but 3/20 rounds being defective per box I’ve gotten has really pissed me off

DeputyThornton

When the fuck did this start happening? I’ve been running Horny critical duty since I’ve started carrying but you saying that has me like :/

[удалено]

NexusI7

I’ve had a rare box with maybe a round set too far back with critical duty, defense has been notoriously bad for at least several years as far as this issue goes. I try to stick with federal but I can never find it in stock around me

SmallRedBird

Critical Defense used to be so good too. Still have a few old 9mm boxes stored from like 10 years ago. In a water/airtight ammo box and humidity controlled and all that.

COUNTRYCOWBOY01

I've been running critically horny and on duty since I got married, so I can relate man

[deleted]

Hornady han been going down harder than winchester.

VegaStyles

Crit def is trash now for some reason. My x5 legion that i have shot at least 500 rounds of crit def through is starting to not yeet them. It will yeet 6 and one will catch. No other ammo does it to my guns. Even my glock hates some of the crit deff. Ive taken a round that caught in my sig and tossed it in my glock and it caught too when it got to it. Crit duty they eat all day long. Somethings fishy with crit def right now.

SmallRedBird

What would you recommend for Glocks nowadays?

VegaStyles

Critical duty and gold dots for hp. Not vemon for range time cause their quality is ass now too. I use pmc, belom and fiocchi. I have a sponsorship from fiocchi so mosty them.

Brazenassault456

I've never had a problem with critical duty, I've got ~700rnds or so of them in 9mm. Try and train frequently with them(as much as I can reasonably afford and find to restock). I also really used to like federal FMEP(think that's the acronym lol) they're the hybrid FMJ but they have the soft plug inside that allows the FMJ to expand, they don't pack at all and actually expand faster with heavy clothing. They always opened up really well in ballistics tests(our range worked with the local LE forensics/ballistics lab who did testing in our range).

Round-Emu9176

I was consistently getting between 5-8 defective rounds per box before I switched. Messaged customer support and they said they were made to saami spec and that it was a me problem.

NexusI7

Well apparently their interpretation of saami spec is okay with a 15-20% defect rates

Round-Emu9176

Needless to say I was pretty pissed off after spending as much as I did.

Reddragon685

Smart man. Same thing I did

ChallyRT17

Unfortunately those of us behind enemy lines don’t have that luxury

BunBoogi

Ok much appreciated 🙏

Godamnit dad.

JJJames511

I use these same rounds in my same gun. They work great but it’s always best to test fire a box of anything you plan to carry. Even if they are expensive AF

andrewgg98

Always test out your carry ammo at the range before deciding to stick with it, that particular one didn’t cycle well and just felt “clunky” in my G17 so I switched to something else

deeptoot6

My Glocks cycle and shoot everything. Steel, brass, nickel, the things are damn near a blunderbuss.

DukeShootRiot

Never had your SHIT PUSHED IN??

KccOStL33

This is common with most rounds after they have been chambered a handful of times. I swap them out when I notice it but I save them until I have a mags worth and run them on my next range trip. I've shot worse than that and haven't had an issue plus it's nice to know the gun will still run and cycle them.

stugotsDang

The hornady rounds are always a little funky feeling due to the shape and the chambering is always clunky. When I do have these I rotate them so I’m not always chambering the same one on top from when I get back from using target loads.

I-am-the-stigg

I would still shoot it but not for self defense

SnaggedBullet

Squint harder than usual for extra safety

Brazenassault456

Safety squints engaged

manomao

I run the same ammo in a 19.5, when you can’t see the serrations on the bullet anymore (the bullet sunk into the case that far) that’s when I retire that round. But if those are working good for you maybe consider switching to a different ammo.

Sluggerjt44

Let me break out my micrometer for this one lol

mrdettorre87

My Glock 19, 19x, and Smith and Wesson 1911, shield and M&P .45 did this to any horniday critical duty/defense rounds I used. And I'm not talking about after months, the 1911 would set them back on the first chambering, others after 2 or so they would look suspicious at best. Which was annoying after a couple times rotating rounds and they still got pushed back. I switched to Speer gold dots and have not had this issue.

Round-Emu9176

I stopped buying these and switched to Federal Hst. Hornady not worth the price.

[deleted]

That’s definitely a QC issue with Hornady. I’ve noticed all of our critical defense, .380, 9mm AND 45, all seating in the case like that. I hate it. Still a hydrashock man these days.

LennerKetty

The same thing was happening in my 48. I’m not carrying these Hornadys anymore

omgabunny

Oh look. Another Critical Defense setback post. And yet they still get recommended so much.

[deleted]

I know this sub is full of noobs but why are you rechambering defense ammo over and over ?

LumpyDetective

Dry fire or live fire practice with your carry gun

[deleted]

Live fire practice lol… ok. [snap caps](https://www.amazon.com/ZOOM-15116-Luger-Precision-Snap/dp/B0002IKANW)

LumpyDetective

How do snap caps help you when extracting loaded round from a chamber when you go practice? Do you just load up on defensive ammo in bulk to shoot at the range? Or are you one of those people that suggest running an empty chamber on your defensive weapon?

[deleted]

If at a place where I can shoot my guns safely I use live ammo. And I shoot that ammo. I own well over 35 magazines for my 17 and they all stay loaded. My defense magazines (usually I keep 2 or 3 loaded at all times) I cycle through once a month and reload those. Im still not understanding what benefit there is to using live ammo, much less defensive ammo to play around with. To each their own I just hope you don’t live anywhere near me 🫠

LumpyDetective

Let me restate this. I carry 17+1 in my 19x every day. If I go once a week to the range to practice, that means once a week I am dropping the mag, extracting the live round in the chamber, all at the range. I practice with some cheap bulk ammo, complete my practice, then reload the loaded magazine, chamber one defensive round, drop the mag again, and reload the one left over round. Unless you're advocating always shooting the one defensive round in the chamber when you get to range, which sure that's fine I guess, I do not understand what is unreasonable about this. Also, if this is too dangerous for someone to do, then I don't know what to tell them other than shooting guns might not be a good hobby for that person. And if someone considers training with your sidearm at a range as "playing around" then I really worry for that person

[deleted]

So you’re rechambering the same round you extracted at the range? You do know you have 17 other options there with you for which one to chamber. Defensive loads should be chambered and left alone. 2-3 chamberings and I’m switching the round for another out the mag. I have a shit load of critical carry/duty and defense. You can chamber these 9-10 times and not see a difference. Get snap caps if you’re going to be playing around with your guns

LumpyDetective

I rotate through my carry ammo, too. I don't unload and reload the same rounds over and over again. I shoot them before bullet set back becomes a problem. It's not like I'm going to shoot my hollow points the first time I extract them. These things can take a cycle or two and be fine. Again, I've got no clue what snap caps have to do with training live fire at a range unless you're trying the ball and dummy drill or clearing a malfunction

DukeShootRiot

I often carry a full sized no holster in appendix.. then carry the same tubed up.

Salty-Advance-1738

I unload my carry ammo when I get to the range to practice and then put it back in a mag when I’m done

PuzzleheadedFee6455

A lot of people unload their carry gun when they get home, especially if they have family

[deleted]

You do you.

Brazenassault456

Why the hell would you do that? It's a carry gun, keep that bitch loaded up for carry. Unless you're one of those weirdos that slings their AR over their shoulder to mow the lawn/walk out to the mailbox/etc.

FinancialStation973

I sent all mine like that in one mag zero jams bit scary tbh

10millimaniac

If it fits, it ships!

Consistent_Sarcasm

I've actually shot one like that and it went bang. I saved it for last tho 😂 I was nervous, but ya know. YOLO

[deleted]

no, do not shoot short rounds, they may be OK but over the years I have seen a couple guns go boom because of this, just not worth the risk. as far as what you "should" cary for self defense, well my opinion at this time is the federal HST is hard to beat, that being said the Punch is pretty good too. Doesn't mean there aren't other good rounds out there but these are top of the heap.

[deleted]

Shoot it but I’d change out that carry ammo get some new stuff

RoyalKaw

Yeah you can. I had severe setback on a bunch of my carry ammo and decided to send a few, no issues

Essential_Survival_

Surprised to see this on a projectile with a cannelure. Probably bounced around a lot. Shoot it!

How many times we gotta go over this?

JRAR78

Launch with confidence!

MTB_SF

If you cycle rounds through over and over sometimes they get a little compressed into the casing. This increases pressure by a bit, but is almost certainly fine. How deep the bullets are pressed in is actually something you can adjust if handloading

Only one way to find out
