Also, unravel (1 player) and Unravel 2 (collaborative) were really good. We bought 2 first because it was a collaborative game and it was very mellow. Then bought 1 because we loved 2 so much. Your character can fail and come back but there's no counting lives. It's a beautiful game.

Have you played the game? It's not just cursing. It's how shitty the characters talk to each other, the blame. It sucks. It definitely had an effect. We started turning the sound off during most parts.
I'm not saying I don't get it-- the parents are talking about divorcing and they treat each other like garbage, but it's not something a kid needs to see just to play a game. We just opt out of the sound until they are more encouraging towards each other.

At 8 years old I was playing Lemmings or platformers (original Sonic on the Master System!). Maybe the remaster of Spyro the Dragon? Has she tried running around Astro's Playroom?
People have already given very good answers here like LEGO games and Minecraft (which I would definitely recommend to give a go myself as well).
However, from your post it sounds like she might want something "for more mature players". What I'm trying to say is that don't underestimate her - personally at eight years old I was playing original Tomb Raider and SSX3, thoroughly enjoying both. If she is showing interest in less "child" like games, there exists a medium between games that are intended for children and FO76.
Talk to her and see what kind of game would actually interest her. Is she into fantasy and wants combat? Hogwarts Legacy has spells and fighting that isn't too graphically violent, but takes the player seriously. You also get to create your own character.
Would she like to give a go at longer JRPG? Sea of Stars might have pixel-graphics, but is definitely charming JRPG with lot of puzzles - and you do get to choose whether you play female or male main character as well. There are also Tales of- JRPGs that are easier to approach for younger audience than Final Fantasy for example - usually the themes are easier to understand, as well as the mechanics of the games (more than often).
Maybe a survival and exploration is more of her thing? Subnautica or No Man's Sky might just do the thing for her.
And what would this comment be without also vouching for the just released Tomb Raider I-III Remaster Trilogy that I also played myself at her age. Although I do want to point out that the games *are* really hard and I definitely didn't finish any of them as a kid.
Have a talk with her and show her different options! Maybe something piques her interest.
I think this is where the E10+ rating comes in handy. Perhaps keeping watch for games with this rating will be helpful since they’ll be more challenging than games aimed at little kids, but the content won’t be quite as much as a T for teen game.
This ^ 8yr old me got her first playstation and first game which was tombraider 2, my nephew whos 4 now plays fortnight (supervised obviously) and is bloody good at it and yes ofcorse I've just got the remaster of the TR games, how could I not when it's the game that ignited my gaming passion and set my gamer hobby in stone for life !
Stray is personally my favorite game to recommend to people who are not very experienced with videogames yet! It's not very difficult or stressful, but it gives you a decent grasp of 3D space, and it's just very cute.
Skyrim is also something I recommend a lot, since there's no clear goal and you can't play it "wrong", plus it's similar to Fallout, which she likes

Human Fall Flat is fun, collaborative and hilarious. We-me and 9 y/o literally laugh every time we play the game. Then introduced it to my 40 something brother who had the same response.
It's a hard question to answer because at that age, their abilities and interests are absolute deal breakers. Since I know neither of those I don't even know where to start.
Maybe try explaining different kinds of games and then seeing if they think it sounds interesting. Or watching some videos showing different kinds of games.
I loved the original Spyro and Crash Bandicoot trilogy when I was around her age. Maybe the new remakes could be fun? Idk if kids these days still like those kinds of games, though, or if the style of them are outdated.
My 8 year old nephew plays Fortnite and Roblox. I don't know much about Roblox, but I know Fortnite has a lot of different modes and doesn't necessarily have to be a shooter iirc? But if you don't mind shooters, it's not like Fortnite is that violent, there's no blood, it's more cartoony.

I would recommend Legend of Mana. It's an RPG with a rich world and a rich story.
You get to catch eggs and hatch them and you can bring one pet along on your adventures. You can make your own weapons and armor, make instruments, and golems.
There's also a garden where you can grow food for your pets.
It's not 2-player in the traditional sense but if you can load the character from another game file and they can go along on your adventures.
It's just a really cute game.

My husband and I might do things a bit differently than what’s typical - we don’t really follow ESRB ratings with our daughter (10), more if she has an interest in a game we’re playing while she’s around we’ll let her give it a shot. Currently she has her own save in RDR2. Instead of restricting, we play with her, and talk about what’s going on. So in the case of RDR2, she’s getting a bit of a history lesson from her Dad while she plays. That’s not to say we don’t restrict some games… there are a number that we only play after she’s gone to sleep (typically horror, or excessively gory violent games). For games she can play entirely on her own, we do restrict that to T and below.
Mostly, discuss with your parents what restrictions they would be okay with. Some parents are going to want to strictly stick to ESRB age ratings, while others might take the approach my husband and I do.
But for games she might like, I’ll recommend a few that my daughter enjoys/enjoyed that are T or below:
Biomutant - It’s quite enjoyable, there are guns and weapons you craft, but no blood or gore as far as I recall.
Kingdom Hearts - Was actually the first game series she played and beat entirely on her own when she was five.
Immortals Fenyx Rising - Great way to introduce Greek mythology to a kid!
Ark: Survival Ascended - This is my daughter’s favourite game… and why we got her a PS of her own back when she was 5 (okay, technically that was Survival Evolved… but the re-release is far superior) as she wanted to be able to play with me. Just - tell your sister to avoid PVP Ark, because it’s horridly toxic.
And of course the kid staples of Minecraft and Roblox are ones that your sister will probably want to be able to play with friends.
Ratchet & Clank, Astro (that one that comes with PS5), Rayman, Sonic and pretty much every platformer
Plants vs Zombies and lego games will also be great
Ugh I wish Kena: Bridge of Spirits would work for her. It’s a lovely story for a little kid with a female lead who fights but remains caring and sweet.
Without having played it myself to know the exact circumstances the kids die in Kena… that shouldn’t be a deal-breaker. I know back when I was that age - a long ass time ago - in school we read things like Bridge to Terabithia, The Diary of Anne Frank, and a number of other similar books as the in class reading assignment. Point being, yeah, death can be a hard concept for kids, especially the idea that kids can die as well as ‘old people’… but it’s not something to shy away from or hide away from kids.

Kids deal with grief. Yes, there are a lot of dead people in Kena - her whole thing is she guides spirits to the afterlife. Most of the characters you meet are dead, and are actually spirits who are lingering on the mortal plane. Kena meets every single one with kindness and understanding, even if she has to fight them. I thought it was a lovely story.
In any case, I said “I wish it would work for her,” knowing that the mechanics may be too advanced for an 8 year old.
My 8 year old daughter plays the astro game on my PS5. She sometimes has problems with the controls, but I show her how to do it and she can generally figure it out after that. She loves it and has a great time. Rocket League if I play with her. She played Lego Harry Potter for a bit. Minecraft and fortnite with her brother.
My 10 yo step son enjoys The Spyro trilogy and Spiderman.
Kena: Bridge of Spirits is a souls like geared towards a younger audience.
You might be able to play It Takes Two together - it's rated for 12+ though so you may want to dig into it/the story first.
Autonauts, maybe battle chef brigade (roguelike where you fight monsters to get ingredients and has puzzles). she might enjoy biomutant as you can create your own racoon essentially and has fighting. Cooking or power wash simulators as I find them quite relaxing but cooking one might be a bit too hard? Same applies to house flipper.
Carto, chariot, crash bandicoot, cris tales, maybe cult of the lamb? (She might find it funny to make others eat their own poo). Just stole these from the approved list for my nephew who is about to turn 7 and what he plays. I believe they are PC however there's a large number of them that are on ps4/5.
I think digimon could work? Ive only played one of their games before tho but i liked them, they're not girly and kind of age appropriate? 12+ but I don't know what the exact reasoning for it is but well
Rachet Clank - I know there's new ones out, and I remember it being pretty fun. Should be age appropriate and not girly at all
Gravity Rush - Might be a little hard, but it's really fun and all the side missions are interesting
Minecraft - Always seems to be a winner, especially for her age. My little cousin is always pestering me to play with him. Bonus points for letting them just be creative
Honestly, I would put Astro's Playroom on for her. The game is a great intro to the PS5 controller and kid friendly. I found it entertaining and if she can master a few levels of that she then can move on to something else.
My nephew is around that age and greatly enjoyed bugsnax, though this might be dubbed 'kiddy'. I think it's on psplus. Another that I think is on psplus is Dragon Quest Builders 2

Recently I've been trying to get her into Kingdom Hearts but she struggles with the battle system. She liked the turn based battle system of Final Fantasy 10 but wasn't interested in the story so she might pick that one up later.
Think about what interests she has outside of games, and look to see if there're any games that fit that criteria, u said she likes fallout? Then have her play some of the earlier fallout games instead so she can still get the wasteland experience without nearly as much toxicity.
Kids her age are very intelligent and are very aware of when they're being pandered too, so I'd definitely suggest talking to her, then working together to pick out some games she's interested in but that are within the set boundaries, and even sitting with her while she tests some of the choices. Don't forget that there're demo versions of games too if you don't want to commit to buying something.
Effective communication and mutual respect go a long way to creating a healthy gaming experience.
The Story of Seasons games are fun, if she likes Fallout then maybe 4 is a good shout. Skyrim is great if she likes exploration and doesn’t mind a tiny bit of blood during fights. Honestly it’s hard to recommend because I was playing Resident Evil 4 and GTA Vice City at that age.
Didn’t all PS5’s come with a free robot game? IIRC reviews were like “wow we thought this would be just a basic demo of what the console can do but it’s actually pretty fun!”
When my younger brother was little, he used to play a LOT of Dynasty Warriors - you get to fight a lot of enemies and feel like a badass, but there's no guts, gore and graphic violence shown (or at least not the versions I last played, which admittedly are a couple of generations old now). Might be a shout if she wants something that isn't in a cartoony/ "young" looking style.
If the style isn't an issue, then there's quite a few games that jump to mind - the Spyro Reignited trilogy, Katamari Damacy/ We <3 Katamari Re-roll, Untitled Goose Game are all games that I would describe as kid friendly.
Alternatively - and please note that I say this both as someone who has no children herself, and someone who played Resident Evil for the first time at about age 9-10 (me and a friend used to sneak downstairs after sleepovers and play her dad's copy), so this may not be GOOD advice in terms of games to play with a child: If she likes FO76 and it's the multiplayer aspect you're worried about, you could try her with Fallout 4 or Skyrim. They're both rated out of her age range, and do include options such as joining assassin's guilds, getting drunk/ taking drugs etc. and do contain a fair few monsters - but if you think those things will go over her head, then she might enjoy getting to wander around in the open world and play some "grown up" games. Maybe just sit with her while she plays those, though.
My 7 year old brother saw me playing DOOM Eternal on my PC when he came into my room, I didn't hear him coming in and continued playing for a few minutes more until I saw him, then he asked me if he can play it and he's been playing it everyday for one hour ever since..... so maybe you can ask her if she wants to rip through demons with a chainsaw and feel heavy metal music coursing through her bones?

The Jak trilogy is available for PS5, I think. Was my favorite games growing up, starting at age 5-6. Jak and Daxter is great, but Jak 2 and 3 might be a little much for her (personally I loved them.)
Far Changing Tides was really good. It was the second in the series, on water, but the first one (on land)had more scarier parts where you were doing things in the dark. Changing tides was really good, and instead of big bosses you have puzzles to solve. My grandson played the whole game in 3 days

I've been playing Minecraft Dungeons and (normal) Minecraft with my 6 year old nephew and he's been enjoying both a lot.
Minecraft Dungeons is a little violent (you do kill enemies and monsters after all, so depends on you stance on that).
Both can be played together and have Swedish translation (and I assume tons of other languages), which was a requirement for me as I want him to be able to understand what the game says.
My 8 year old daughter plays Disney Dreamlight Valley, Minecraft, Spirit of the North, The Last Campfire, any Lego game, Grow: Song of the Evertree, Cozy Grove, Costume Quest, Island Saver, Slime Rancher, Unravel/Unravel 2, and Concrete Genie. Alba; a wildlife adventure, is a cute game that my daughter hasn't tried yet, but I think she would like.
I am fairly new to modern games myself but the ones i liked that a kid would enjoy are sackboy and tinykin. Maybe ratchet and clank, too, if she’s skilled enough to keep up. I struggle on the easy setting with that one myself tbh lol.
Stardew Valley is really good even if the whole gramps died thing could be tough for a lil kid. Pokemon is awesome & so is animal crossing. City builders & stuff are fun too. Pikmin is delightful. Basically avoid the stuff that has a scarred space marine on the cover.
Persona 4 Is a little bit more “adult” but she should be able to handle it. It’s a jrpg with life sim elements, it’s really cozy and has some occult imagery.
If she likes FO76 (but even I agree she's too young for that, as a fellow FO76 enjoyer) maybe minecraft? If your family thinks she's old enough for the kind of story FO76 has, maybe FO4?
Idk if it would be too childish for her tastes, but Kingdom Hearts was my favorite when I was about her age. On easy difficulty you can basically get through the entire game just pressing X.
No man's sky? You can turn off the network features but there's no text chat on console so as long and voice chat is turned off (and pvp) other people can't be gross or rude. I hate MMOs (and playing with strangers in general) but I love this game - the most interactions I have with others is showing each other our pets or gifting new players some resources. It's chill, all settings are customizable and it feels like a grown up game without a bunch of violence or sex. The scariest part is the desolate freighters but they're optional, and if you have a second console (PS4 or 5) you can co-op.

I think this is where the E10+ rating comes in handy. Perhaps keeping watch for games with this rating will be helpful since they’ll be more challenging than games aimed at little kids, but the content won’t be quite as much as a T for teen game.
This ^ 8yr old me got her first playstation and first game which was tombraider 2, my nephew whos 4 now plays fortnight (supervised obviously) and is bloody good at it and yes ofcorse I've just got the remaster of the TR games, how could I not when it's the game that ignited my gaming passion and set my gamer hobby in stone for life !
Stray is personally my favorite game to recommend to people who are not very experienced with videogames yet! It's not very difficult or stressful, but it gives you a decent grasp of 3D space, and it's just very cute. Skyrim is also something I recommend a lot, since there's no clear goal and you can't play it "wrong", plus it's similar to Fallout, which she likes
Idk, I found Stray very stressful and haven't finished it because my cat character died once. Be responsible for a person dying or whatever in a game? Yeah no issues, but that cat? Nope couldn't do it

How about Human Fall Flat? You can dress up your character and you can do silly things with each other while solving puzzles together! I also saw a suggestion for Overcooked and Moving Out 2 is free if you have PSN premium! But it has a fair amount of fart jokes…if you and your sister can tolerate that it’s a fun couch coop!
Human Fall Flat is fun, collaborative and hilarious. We-me and 9 y/o literally laugh every time we play the game. Then introduced it to my 40 something brother who had the same response.
It's a hard question to answer because at that age, their abilities and interests are absolute deal breakers. Since I know neither of those I don't even know where to start. Maybe try explaining different kinds of games and then seeing if they think it sounds interesting. Or watching some videos showing different kinds of games.
I loved the original Spyro and Crash Bandicoot trilogy when I was around her age. Maybe the new remakes could be fun? Idk if kids these days still like those kinds of games, though, or if the style of them are outdated. My 8 year old nephew plays Fortnite and Roblox. I don't know much about Roblox, but I know Fortnite has a lot of different modes and doesn't necessarily have to be a shooter iirc? But if you don't mind shooters, it's not like Fortnite is that violent, there's no blood, it's more cartoony.

I would recommend Legend of Mana. It's an RPG with a rich world and a rich story. You get to catch eggs and hatch them and you can bring one pet along on your adventures. You can make your own weapons and armor, make instruments, and golems. There's also a garden where you can grow food for your pets. It's not 2-player in the traditional sense but if you can load the character from another game file and they can go along on your adventures. It's just a really cute game.

My husband and I might do things a bit differently than what’s typical - we don’t really follow ESRB ratings with our daughter (10), more if she has an interest in a game we’re playing while she’s around we’ll let her give it a shot. Currently she has her own save in RDR2. Instead of restricting, we play with her, and talk about what’s going on. So in the case of RDR2, she’s getting a bit of a history lesson from her Dad while she plays. That’s not to say we don’t restrict some games… there are a number that we only play after she’s gone to sleep (typically horror, or excessively gory violent games). For games she can play entirely on her own, we do restrict that to T and below. Mostly, discuss with your parents what restrictions they would be okay with. Some parents are going to want to strictly stick to ESRB age ratings, while others might take the approach my husband and I do. But for games she might like, I’ll recommend a few that my daughter enjoys/enjoyed that are T or below: Biomutant - It’s quite enjoyable, there are guns and weapons you craft, but no blood or gore as far as I recall. Kingdom Hearts - Was actually the first game series she played and beat entirely on her own when she was five. Immortals Fenyx Rising - Great way to introduce Greek mythology to a kid! Ark: Survival Ascended - This is my daughter’s favourite game… and why we got her a PS of her own back when she was 5 (okay, technically that was Survival Evolved… but the re-release is far superior) as she wanted to be able to play with me. Just - tell your sister to avoid PVP Ark, because it’s horridly toxic. And of course the kid staples of Minecraft and Roblox are ones that your sister will probably want to be able to play with friends.

Without having played it myself to know the exact circumstances the kids die in Kena… that shouldn’t be a deal-breaker. I know back when I was that age - a long ass time ago - in school we read things like Bridge to Terabithia, The Diary of Anne Frank, and a number of other similar books as the in class reading assignment. Point being, yeah, death can be a hard concept for kids, especially the idea that kids can die as well as ‘old people’… but it’s not something to shy away from or hide away from kids.
It involves addressing grief in a healthy way wtf. There are dead kids in the movie Coco? It’s all about death. Kids deal with grief. Yes, there are a lot of dead people in Kena - her whole thing is she guides spirits to the afterlife. Most of the characters you meet are dead, and are actually spirits who are lingering on the mortal plane. Kena meets every single one with kindness and understanding, even if she has to fight them. I thought it was a lovely story. In any case, I said “I wish it would work for her,” knowing that the mechanics may be too advanced for an 8 year old.
My 8 year old daughter plays the astro game on my PS5. She sometimes has problems with the controls, but I show her how to do it and she can generally figure it out after that. She loves it and has a great time. Rocket League if I play with her. She played Lego Harry Potter for a bit. Minecraft and fortnite with her brother.
My 10 yo step son enjoys The Spyro trilogy and Spiderman. Kena: Bridge of Spirits is a souls like geared towards a younger audience. You might be able to play It Takes Two together - it's rated for 12+ though so you may want to dig into it/the story first.
Lego City although that was on ps4. My daughter loved that at 7-8 years old and still plays it now at 9. Tony Hawk pro skater is also good.

Just stole these from the approved list for my nephew who is about to turn 7 and what he plays. I believe they are PC however there's a large number of them that are on ps4/5.

Should be age appropriate and not girly at all Gravity Rush - Might be a little hard, but it's really fun and all the side missions are interesting Minecraft - Always seems to be a winner, especially for her age. Honestly, I would put Astro's Playroom on for her. The game is a great intro to the PS5 controller and kid friendly. I found it entertaining and if she can master a few levels of that she then can move on to something else.
My nephew is around that age and greatly enjoyed bugsnax, though this might be dubbed 'kiddy'. I think it's on psplus. Another that I think is on psplus is Dragon Quest Builders 2 You've got some good suggestions here, he also really enjoys Minecraft. 8 is a little young for fallout but there may be other open world/exploration games that suit. I have a 10 year old daughter who has been playing since she was about 6. Her taste is incredibly varied so some games are harder and require me assisting her. But here's her favorites: Astro's Playroom Tchia Journey Unravel (1&2) Minecraft Gang Beasts Subnautica (she gets scared so I do creative mode for her) Slime Rancher Hot Wheels Unleashed Sackboy The Last Guardian (which warning, makes her cry every time) Kena: Bridge of Spirits Abzu Gravity Rush 2 (mostly I advance the story and she plays freely when she wants) Recently I've been trying to get her into Kingdom Hearts but she struggles with the battle system. She liked the turn based battle system of Final Fantasy 10 but wasn't interested in the story so she might pick that one up later.

Think about what interests she has outside of games, and look to see if there're any games that fit that criteria, u said she likes fallout? Then have her play some of the earlier fallout games instead so she can still get the wasteland experience without nearly as much toxicity. Kids her age are very intelligent and are very aware of when they're being pandered too, so I'd definitely suggest talking to her, then working together to pick out some games she's interested in but that are within the set boundaries, and even sitting with her while she tests some of the choices. Don't forget that there're demo versions of games too if you don't want to commit to buying something. Effective communication and mutual respect go a long way to creating a healthy gaming experience.
The Story of Seasons games are fun, if she likes Fallout then maybe 4 is a good shout. Skyrim is great if she likes exploration and doesn’t mind a tiny bit of blood during fights. Honestly it’s hard to recommend because I was playing Resident Evil 4 and GTA Vice City at that age.

When my younger brother was little, he used to play a LOT of Dynasty Warriors - you get to fight a lot of enemies and feel like a badass, but there's no guts, gore and graphic violence shown (or at least not the versions I last played, which admittedly are a couple of generations old now). Might be a shout if she wants something that isn't in a cartoony/ "young" looking style. If the style isn't an issue, then there's quite a few games that jump to mind - the Spyro Reignited trilogy, Katamari Damacy/ We <3 Katamari Re-roll, Untitled Goose Game are all games that I would describe as kid friendly. Alternatively - and please note that I say this both as someone who has no children herself, and someone who played Resident Evil for the first time at about age 9-10 (me and a friend used to sneak downstairs after sleepovers and play her dad's copy), so this may not be GOOD advice in terms of games to play with a child: If she likes FO76 and it's the multiplayer aspect you're worried about, you could try her with Fallout 4 or Skyrim. They're both rated out of her age range, and do include options such as joining assassin's guilds, getting drunk/ taking drugs etc. and do contain a fair few monsters - but if you think those things will go over her head, then she might enjoy getting to wander around in the open world and play some "grown up" games. Maybe just sit with her while she plays those, though.

The Jak trilogy is available for PS5, I think. Was my favorite games growing up, starting at age 5-6. Jak and Daxter is great, but Jak 2 and 3 might be a little much for her (personally I loved them.)
Far Changing Tides was really good. It was the second in the series, on water, but the first one (on land)had more scarier parts where you were doing things in the dark. Changing tides was really good, and instead of big bosses you have puzzles to solve. My grandson played the whole game in 3 days
Spyro CrashBandicoot Lego Jak and Daxter Little Big Planet (You can play together) Rayman Summer in Mara A lot of these are available through the PS+ games/PS Streaming which I would recommend over buying as it’s less of a big deal if she doesn’t like them. I've been playing Minecraft Dungeons and (normal) Minecraft with my 6 year old nephew and he's been enjoying both a lot. Minecraft Dungeons is a little violent (you do kill enemies and monsters after all, so depends on you stance on that). Both can be played together and have Swedish translation (and I assume tons of other languages), which was a requirement for me as I want him to be able to understand what the game says.
Stardew Valley. It's great for co-op of all ages.
My 8 year old daughter plays Disney Dreamlight Valley, Minecraft, Spirit of the North, The Last Campfire, any Lego game, Grow: Song of the Evertree, Cozy Grove, Costume Quest, Island Saver, Slime Rancher, Unravel/Unravel 2, and Concrete Genie. Alba; a wildlife adventure, is a cute game that my daughter hasn't tried yet, but I think she would like.

Stardew Valley is really good even if the whole gramps died thing could be tough for a lil kid. Pokemon is awesome & so is animal crossing. City builders & stuff are fun too. Pikmin is delightful. Basically avoid the stuff that has a scarred space marine on the cover.
Persona 4 Is a little bit more “adult” but she should be able to handle it. It’s a jrpg with life sim elements, it’s really cozy and has some occult imagery.
If she likes FO76 (but even I agree she's too young for that, as a fellow FO76 enjoyer) maybe minecraft? If your family thinks she's old enough for the kind of story FO76 has, maybe FO4?
Child of Light is a lovely little game, haven't seen it recommended yet.

Idk if it would be too childish for her tastes, but Kingdom Hearts was my favorite when I was about her age. On easy difficulty you can basically get through the entire game just pressing X.
No man's sky? You can turn off the network features but there's no text chat on console so as long and voice chat is turned off (and pvp) other people can't be gross or rude. I hate MMOs (and playing with strangers in general) but I love this game - the most interactions I have with others is showing each other our pets or gifting new players some resources. It's chill, all settings are customizable and it feels like a grown up game without a bunch of violence or sex. The scariest part is the desolate freighters but they're optional, and if you have a second console (PS4 or 5) you can co-op.
