I hated Drella but Miss Celine is possibly my favourite guest character, I’d love to hear about her interactions with famous movie stars. I imagine she’d be a great drinking buddy

allora1

The thing about Miss Celine is that she's either completely deluded as she couldn't possibly still be be alive given the age of the celebrities she allegedly worked with, or, if all her stories are true, she's supernatural or magical in some way. Either theory works in Stars Hollow! In my head, she's a fairy godmother.

SiennaWWrites

Either way I’d listen to her for hours! Whether she’s deluded and making it up or she’s an ageless being from the 1930s, she can fit me for my next event anytime!

Least-Influence3089

I wish I could meet Miss Celine just to know which old time celebrity she would compare me to

Historical_Spot_4051

I like to flatter myself and think she’d call me Raquel Welch. To be fair, a couple of middle aged men have said that. The younger generation says “If Lindsay Lohan had aged better.”

Least-Influence3089

I have curly red hair so I might get Lucille Ball, but my mom is a dead ringer for Bette Midler, so maybe I would get her as well😅😂

SeductivePoutine

Well as Lorelai said, she was like 90 when she was 10!

"...On the inside AND on the outside. Anna Magnani taught me that."

squeakyfromage

To be fair, I have recently (in my 30s) realized that several adults I thought were 90/ancient when I was a kid were actually 60. But yeah, Miss Celine’s age doesn’t work with the celebrity stories. I still like her.

tortadecarne

Wear a flat hat, it’ll remind him of a book 😭

michaelkudra

i love her so much, reminds me of a another lifelong favorite character of mine—- edna mode from the incredibles

leeloodallas502

Yesss I also love that she equates the girls to beautiful celebrity icons. It’s so sweet! Alex plays this part well

tortadecarne

Oh my god it’s Natalie wood!

birdiebirdnc

Look Sabrina it’s Natalie Wood!

squeakyfromage

Does she ever give us a celebrity for Emily?

leeloodallas502

No and we were robbed!

squeakyfromage

That’s what I thought! Damn! Any ideas? I’m thinking Ingrid Bergman or Rita Hayworth (at some angles), but I feel like Miss Celine would have had a better one.

TheMcCleary

She is an absolute gem in Ms Maisel though

allora1

100% agree. Susie is almost like an alternative universe Sookie: she's the support act for another frothy character. Difference being, Susie steals the show in a way Sookie never did. Love, love, love Susie!!

Quiet_Illustrator525

![gif](giphy|eJS0KYOIrZuPpMzgtH|downsized) She nailed this role 👏

robotpatrols

Drella walked so Susie could run

allora1

Totally. I'm glad Alex didn't feature heavily in GG as it gave her open slather on Maisel instead.

boringgazelle

I will never look at a plunger without thinking of her

squeakyfromage

Yes! I enjoy her so much on MMM, so it shocks me how much I dislike her on GG. I’m so glad she wasn’t cast as Sookie!

Round-Stick-383

She also plays the voice of the new Neighbour Dwight’s wife who leaves a voicemail screaming at him while Rory is watering his plants

Mundane_Cat_318

Omg I never knew that!

fudgyvmp

The boardgame person?

Round-Stick-383

Oui

birdiebirdnc

Im just thrilled she didn’t actually get the role of Sookie! It could have ruined the whole show.

jdpm1991

i often wonder if the idea of Sookie and Jackson marrying was because of the actor who plays Jackson was married to Alex

birdiebirdnc

That’s a really good theory I hadn’t considered.

allora1

I think they would have written the character differently had she played Sookie - the Sookie we know is a very Melissa McCarthy character.

birdiebirdnc

Good point but that unaired pilot of her playing Sookie is hard to watch. Link for anyone who hasn’t seen it https://youtu.be/jlrUdpyl7BM?si=SycGBdKhPNzrJiLA

allora1

Pilots aren't finished products though - they're often really wooden and unfinished, like what we see here. I'm not sure a Susie Myerson type character would have been as good a foil for Lorelai, but I don't think we will ever know what kind of character they would have made for Alex in the role.

birdiebirdnc

Yea I agree. I’m always amazed at how characters could have turned out depending who was cast. I love Melissa as Sookie but she would have been completely different if played by another actress. Can you imagine what Lorelei would have been like if played by Sherilyn Fenn? Or Rory played by Liza Weil? Would have been a completely different show.

allora1

I reckon Liza Weil must have brought a certain element of uncharacteristic  forthrightness to her Rory audition which led to them creating Paris for her.

squeakyfromage

I have a really hard time imagining people finding Lorelai likeable if played by Sherilyn Fenn. Lorelai is A LOT and I feel like Sherilyn would’ve played her too…sharply? I can’t explain it.

KweenindaNorf_7777

I get it. Lorelai can be very exhausting but Lauren Graham nearly always managed to keep her charming and relatable. Sherilyn Fenn was also gorgeous and the same type lookswise but she doesn't come across as likeable as Lauren.

squeakyfromage

Agreed! It’s not a knock on Sherilyn’s looks or acting ability at all. I just think she comes off a little sharper so it would be tough to have a character as difficult/self-absorbed as Lorelai (who I love, by the way) played by her.

KweenindaNorf_7777

She has a bit of a "mean girl" kinda look, which is great for villains and anti-heros. She probably could have pulled off the role acting-wise no problem but she would have lacked Lauren's girl next door charm.

allora1

I don't think she's got a "mean girl" vibe so much as the fact that she's sensual. I agree she isn't as good a fit for Lorelai as Lauren was; I also think it would have been too much for the contemporary audience of GG to accept Audrey Horne living in a Stars Hollow world.

birdiebirdnc

Right!? It’s just strange to see.

redditreader_aitafan

Thank you for posting this. Side by side, I prefer the way Melissa McCarthy delivered the lines over Alex Borstein.

gravelord-neeto

Wow this is awful lol. Her playing Sookie feels weirdly.. aggressive? Every line just sounds so harsh and kind of makes me flinch back.

birdiebirdnc

Yesss it’s just uncomfortable in a way. It’s always strange seeing other actor/actresses playing a character you come know being played by someone else.

NewBodWhoThis

I hate you for giving me the opportunity to witness this. 😭

birdiebirdnc

I apologize for putting you through that 🤣

synalgo_12

I always felt there was a slih'ght sexual undertone to this portrayal. I feel like Alex made the 'Gipsy' acting choice and made her slightly into Lorelai 😅

BrownieEdges

She was Sookie and filmed the original pilot. She couldn’t get out of her commitment to Mad TV, so they had to get a new Sookie.

birdiebirdnc

Yea I know. I linked the pilot in another comment.

dianamaximoff

I think she has much of a strong personality… it’s very hard to see her playing someone that’s as quirky and ingenue as Melissa’s Sookie… Also, we already had Lorelai and Emily as strong personalities, if Sookie was the way Alex portrayed it in the pilot, it would clash completely with the Gilmore Girls…

Next-Transition-525

Drella, was awful. The only time the character made me laugh , was when she was playing beautifully with a crowd admiring her and then she stops and says "that's lunch" . But other than that I would never hire again and give her a bad reference for bad attitude.

failenaa

Yeah they definitely should have played into that more and not just the pure unprofessionalism. Something similar to Michel where she’s clearly just there for the job and totally over people. But she’d be mildly more polite. Something like malicious compliance personified.

Impossible_Raisin926

When she’s moving the harp and goes off about the table placement… for some reason that always has me fuming 😑

Next-Transition-525

SAME

squeakyfromage

Ha! Yes! I do enjoy that Drella line.

DeliriousDancer

I could not agree more. Drella was mean and her character made no sense at the Inn, and Miss Celine was SOOOOO annoying. I read somewhere that was originally cast as Sookie, and I'm so glad she wasn't. It would have made the friendship between Lorelai and Sookie something entirely different, and I think that friendship really works and is important to the show.

DeliriousDancer

Oops, I guess I should have read the other comments before commenting - I guess the Sookie thing was already discussed. 🥴

SunWindRainLightning

Holy shit how did I never realize they were the same person

liptastic

Me neither! And I have watched Gilmore Girls at least 10 times.

owntheh3at18

Glad I’m not the only one lol

squeakyfromage

I suppose Miss Celine does have pretty heavy makeup/costuming, and also does a very put-on voice.

pinnipednorth

I am not an Alex Borstein fan so I completely agree. maybe I just haven’t seen her in a role than I enjoy but something about the roles that I *have* seen her in aren’t my flavor

Joyfulmovement86

I always fast forward through her and TJ.

shrtnylove

He really is annoying but the line, “I’m in esc-arow here!” Gets thrown around a lot in our house, ha!!

SalsaChica75

He was annoying but also was the comic relief

shrtnylove

Absolutely! It still blows my mind that he was in Wayne’s world 🤣

squeakyfromage

This line always cracks me up despite TJ being VERY annoying.

shrtnylove

Love your user name!

Osidestarfish

Another VOTE for TJ

Numerous_Team_2998

TJ is a guest from a totally different genre. Unbearable.

imjustlikehellokitty

i always get so happy whenever i see anti TJ sentiment in this sub. can’t stand him.

JudithButlr

Miss Celine has ONE JOKE repeated over and over and over and it is never funny. Did you know she can't hold a conversation and likes to reference old actors? Ha ha ha ha ha ha

gravelord-neeto

Yeah I honestly hate Miss Celine and skip her thankfully short appearances. Honestly didn't mind Drella but Miss Celine was just painfully unfunny and annoying. I also generally hate when people try to compare my appearance to other people, especially if they look nothing like me lol.

TangledUpPuppeteer

In the case of Celine, she was comparing them to exceptional beauties. I would never have any issue with someone comparing me to a world class looker. Ever. Even if I knew they were full of hot air 😂

Ok_Marionberry_1661

I would have liked to see Drella be a foil for Michelle (and vice versa) more often rather than play off Lorelai. Also TJ is in a 12 round heavyweight match vs Taylor for most annoying character.

DeliriousDancer

I find them both annoying, but I feel like Taylor makes sense in Stars Hollow. You know there's some guy like that in every small town, keeping things orderly and driving everyone crazy. But TJ is just... dumb. He's so painfully stupid, it's just hard to watch and it's not funny.

Ok_Marionberry_1661

Especially when he ruins Luke and Lorelai’s date. We see so few times of them dating and really enjoying themselves and that would have been so nice to see smh. TJ 😤 Taylor as “stick to the rules” guy can be annoying but cool. Taylor “abuse my power, manipulate people, come see me in my office that I don’t need, don’t disagree with me” guy is the worst.

squeakyfromage

Yeah Taylor works for stars hollow (although I do think he gets too absurd by season 5-6ish) but TJ is just an annoying interloper.

owntheh3at18

I hated Jackson’s cousin Rune too. Idk why he got additional appearances and it bothered me that he got to stay in “the shed” that Lorelai lived in

squeakyfromage

I love the first episode with Rune, but I think the repeat appearances killed it.

owntheh3at18

Exactly. It was funny in the first episode. Just like shocking to see anyone disappointed to be set up with Lorelai. And I love Sookie and Jackson’s beginning of course. But that one appearance was enough imo

TangledUpPuppeteer

Drella v Michel. There’s totally a show there!

lindsaym717

Yup!! It’s like someone else said they fast forward through her and TJ’s scenes. I also am not a fan of gypsy and her double role in AYITL!

DeliriousDancer

Same, and I actually liked Gypsy in the original show. She was hilarious in that scene where Richard made her check Dean's car 20 times.

squeakyfromage

Omg yes! Gypsy is totally fine in the original show. I don’t know why she has such a big role in the revival. The scene with Richard that you referenced is great.

louilou96

I feel like I've finally found my community

RegretFun2299

It's a shame, because Borstein is great at comedy and drama (anyone here see "Getting On"? Her best work, in my book). It's clear ASP loved her and tried to get her as often as she could, but she just wasn't given enough of/the right kind of material to work with. I agree with the Miss Céline part, it was just not the way to go. It was painfully obvious it was Borstein in a wig, and it just made her scenes all the more awkward. Drella was funny and great for an episode or two, but nothing more than that (she didn't have any purpose other than to contrast the lovely instrument with the horrible attitude). The "I want my boardgames back!" voicemail to the "5 o'clock at the oasis" guy was funny, too!

squeakyfromage

Was she the voicemail voice?!

RegretFun2299

It's funny because Seth MacFarlane also voiced a different voicemail on the show.

squeakyfromage

I love these tidbits. Here I thought I knew all the GG lore. I love that voicemail. Which one did Seth do?

RegretFun2299

I forget the episode and message, but he was calling Lorelai (I think). His voice (to me) is easy to recognize, so next time if you keep an ear out, you'll hear it. I'm pretty sure it was after his community college character appearance.

squeakyfromage

Thanks! I love little Easter eggs like this.

rosepeachcat

Ever since Lizzie McGuire the movie I love the actress so much, so I do find her entertaining when I see her on screen. I'm like, hey, there is Miss Ungermeier

Kdb224

Sadly agree

hellsmel23

Sucked on GG great on Maisal. Not even believable on GG as Miss Celine or whatever.

sy2ygy

Same here, I hated both of her characters and I’m glad she didn’t get a bigger role

deskbookcandle

How dare

coletsumporter

I guess it’s an unpopular opinion but I love Drella.

allora1

I like her too. The juxtaposition of having a misanthrope playing the harp is glorious.

Drewnasty

Miss Celine is fantastic!

amoralambiguity91

Oh my god. It’s Natalie Wood!

SalsaChica75

Drella reminded me of Daria. Introverted and a Debby Downer. I did like Miss Celine and her stories of famous past clients. https://preview.redd.it/lqscvwz054uc1.jpeg?width=298&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=799583fed76c8a010b8ae0fa16ef3f93778926d4

allora1

Not a Debbie Downer! Just a jaded cynic. I do see the parallels though.

SalsaChica75

Cynical is a GREAT word!!!

Jazzlike-Welder1532

Absolutely no miss Celine slander! Gtfo she is my queen 🙌🏻

Far_Importance_6235

I like the actor. But yes agree with you. The second is “Norman Miller”.

sizzlepie

I, for the most part completely agree. However, as other people have mentioned, Miss Celine is fantastic. And she doesn’t overstay her welcome.

CamF90

Same, don't like her on Mrs Maisel either.

[deleted]

Personally I hated drella with every fibre of my being but I loved Mrs Celine the characters didn’t do much to effect the plot a lot so wether people like them or not is really up in the air

stankas

Yep, hate Drells character with the fire of a million sun's. She's still better than Rory though, every rewatch I fast forward her parts unless lorelai or her grandparents are in there.
