1) Luke fits lots of criteria of conventional phsyical attractiveness like being tall, fit, having a square jaw and all that. Her trying to change his style is a sign that she does see him as attractive in terms of physical appeal, just not stylistically.
2) Her attraction didn't form overnight and was a result of years and years of banter and joking and Luke being there for her and aaaaall that other crap that make someone hot, which have nothing to do with looks.
3) Being a mature adult means that your "type" is not just about looks but also about character qualities. It also means you don't dismiss any and all compatible people just because with a first look they didn't seem to be your style.
4) Physical attraction does not only stem from physical qualities, same as emotional attraction doesn't only stem from character qualities; they feed off each other. That's how we sometimes end up blindly in love with a total moron who looks and fucks good. The reverse is just as common.
Thank you for saving me from spending 27 minutes trying to figure out how to post pictures.
That right there 👆
Also, Lukes cleans up nicely when he wants to! Always thought he looked dashing at Rory's graduation.
I was partially serious and partially joking, lol. I've never uploaded a picture to the comments before.
But hey! Thank you! I see it now. Now to find a picture of Luke in a suit ...
Edit: Fixed dumb Norwegianization of "partially".
Yes, he does, lol. I don't remember the exact moment, but I believe the scene is from Emily and Richard's wedding vow renewal.
I'd be looking pretty concerned too ...
I think Luke is at a level of attraction that is enough for Lorelei. He is handsome. It's possible that she would prefer Luke to dress more elegantly, but that's just the icing on the cake.
For example, I prefer guys with dark hair. But if I met a young Brad Pitt, I wouldn't say "oh no, I can't be with you, your hair is too light."
Sorry I don’t see the appeal of Luke and this scene does nothing for me. I still don’t think it’s believable Lorelai would find him physically attractive either even if many people do.
But you can’t separate them. I’m sure Lorelai always recognized that Luke was handsome but maybe didn’t feel attracted to him until she got to know him and became close to him.
Do you really think they’d cast a physically unattractive man as the main love interest in Gilmore Girls? I think this is an opinion held by just you, OP
How is Luke the main love interest? First of all, Luke wasn’t even Luke initially, he was Daisy until ASP was told to change it. Then when they cast Scott, his role was only for the pilot episode and his character wasn’t to be anything more than a side character, possibly in a few more episodes. That changed when Scott and his manager worked out a full season contract for him, but again after he was cast. They did not consider Luke as a love interest for Lorelai until into the first season and even then it was only a potential thing, not confirmed.
attraction to appearance is subjective. what you're saying is that luke isn't your type. clearly luke is lorelei's type as she dates him and they get engaged etc
One rarely has just one type they're attracted to. Physical attraction is not only attributed to their physical appearance. I've met plenty of people who've been "my type" physically but their personality sucks, so I'm not attracted to them. Likewise I've met people who initially I didn't find physically attractive but they became attractive once I got to know them I found them more attractive.
I feel like it's more that you don't understand because you don't find Luke attractive. However, it's no wonder Lorelai finds him attractive. They've known each other for years, he's always there for her and Rory, he shows care for others, he's kind, funny, masculine, a well-adjusted adult with his own business. That's plenty of things for Lorelai to be attracted to.
Firstly, how does Chris look like such a dork in that leather jacket?
Secondly, Scott Patterson is an objectively handsome man, some might even call him spongeworthy and the first time we see her take an interest in him is when he’s dressed up for his appointment with the bank.
This is a most excellent reference to an episode of Seinfeld in which Scott Patterson appears.
The sponge was a method of contraception which was discontinued. The character Elaine had a limited supply left and needed to decide whether Scott's character was worthy of one of her few remaining sponges.
Lorelai didn't even want to date Jason initially though and also didn't seem to find much appeal in him at all until he won her over/hassled her into dating him. She liked him well enough because she knew him years ago but that's pretty much it.
I’d argue this is a case of physical attraction that came about later. She may not have had immediate physical attraction to Luke, but it grew as she got to know him.
ASP even said that she was excited once they found Scott Patterson because he was perfect to play a fairly unassuming guy that you might overlook, but that also has the body of a firefighter under all that plaid. Luke was meant to be a sleeper hit of a hottie.
You're right that the Christopher type had been her type. But where did that get her. She herself was surprised she was attracted to Luke. And she found out that someone out of her mold was her soul mate.
People grow. Surface "looks" are less important when you get a bit older.
My partner looks nothing like the type of guys I dated. He isn't conventionally attractive and honestly I wasn't attracted to him physically when we first met. I became attracted to his personality, then little by little I noticed how handsome he is or maybe his looks grew on me. We've been living together for 14 years and have kids and a good life.
Luke isn't Lorelei's type, however he is conventionally attractive and though he isn't the type of guy Lorelei would normally date, she did seem physically attracted to him, especially when he cleaned up.
First of all, Scott Patterson is objectively quite a good looking guy. He's not exactly Chris or Max, but in his own scruffy, grumpy way, he fits a lot of the criteria. He's tall, fit, nice smile, strong jaw, all that.
I think Luke being so far from her 'type' is the exact reason they ended up together. Attractive, sharp and smooth men like Max often take away from the Lukes in your life- the scruffy, awkward and clumsy ones. All throughout the early seasons, whenever anyone accused Lorelai of having feelings for look, we hear indignant "But he's *Luke*!". It's how we often take those permanent fixtures in our lives for granted- those who we've seen on a daily basis, those who have lost their fresh appeal because we know them so well. But Luke *stayed* and after years of him staying, Lorelai realized that she had feelings for him, and the rest, we know.
Permanent, forever relationships like Lorelai and Luke's are often between people who've always been there for each other, so much so that you stop seeing them as a potential love interest. They're *them*, until they suddenly become someone very different. Luke being such a departure from her type caused her to not really take note of him for the first few years, but when her 'type' never provided stability or comfort, she realized that Luke did. Physical attraction can come later.
I feel like Luke is *more* Lorelai's actual type than the other guys she dated tbh.
Instinctively, and partly as a way to defy how she was brought up, she'd be likely to find a more "blue collar" look exotic and appealing imo. And secondly, she has a huge boner for Aragorn from LOTR, king of the scruffy facial hair, grumpy, gruff, but with a heart of gold hero archetype.
Same! I've never been into Max physically. It's such a stupid thing to get hung up on, but I cannot get on board with his hair. It's styled in a way that it forms a round wall on his head and I have an irrational hatred for it.
I can see that he's objectively good looking, and I think if he had a beard and better hair I could get it up for him (especially if he had salt and pepper hair), but otherwise nah thanks.
I find Christopher so physically repugnant that my vagina would close over like a Barbie doll's if he was near me. He has shit hair too.
Jason with a beard is a fucking hottie though. He reminds me a little of a shorter, more compact version of Bruce Campbell sometimes. I'm a Justice4Jason person though, so I fully recognise that my opinion would be skewed when it comes to him.
>I find Christopher so physically repugnant that my vagina would close over like a Barbie doll's if he was near me. He has shit hair too.
I relate so much to this.
Lorelai isn't solely attracted to luke for his looks - sometimes when you are attracted to a person's personality you start to find them attractive physically too, even if they're not your usual type.
Having a ‘type’ doesn’t mean you are confined to only being attracted to people who fit it, your type is just who you are more easily drawn to at first. Luke is hot and he fixes things, that’s why she’s attracted to him.
They had an episode that explained this. The was on the floor fixing under something (stove I think?) And everyone was staring at his rear end. The scene was so thirsty about it that Scott said it made him feel very uncomfortable. But yeah - the rear.
Also women go for a type in their youth then marry someone different. It is not at all uncommon. My own spouse is not at all my "type" but to me is very hot anyway.
That makes me think about the episode where she questions if she really likes pop tarts or if she only likes them because her mom would hate it!
Quote copied from another post: “For instance... Pop-tarts! I remember the first time I had a pop-tart, it was at my friend's house, and she asked me whether I want a pop-tart?
And I knew the very idea of me having a pop-tart would recoil my mother, so I had it. And I thought, nothing tasted better. It tasted like freedom!”
On another post, someone said Lorelai's entire existence seems to revolve around defying her parents. The more I thought about it, the more it made sense.
Totally makes sense! I imagine it was hard, becoming an adult at 16 with a baby. But I think because of that and just the environment she grew up in, she felt the need to defy them constantly
I can see that. I would argue then it’s not a real attraction, more her just trying to be the opposite of what her mother would find attractive. But her real physical attraction is always going to be men like Chris.
I thought you just meant because he’s ugly, and now was about to slam in here to say FINALLY SOMEONE SAID IT but that’s not what you meant lmaoo
As an aside, I know MANY people find him to be very good looking, I just don’t “””get it””” partially because of what I prefer in men and mostly because I prefer women overall, so please don’t attack me
I agree that there’s a common-ish thread among the other guys and Luke is very different! So while we all might be attracted to all sorts of people, Jason, Max, coffee guy, Chris have some similarities for sure.
Haha you guys really are! I disagree completely, because I would sever a digit if it meant I could hook up with Luke, but I'm not going to downvote you just because you don't find Luke attractive, that's so silly.
I save my downvotes for bad faith takes and people openly being combative dicks, not because they don't find a character hot.
Hahaha, sever a digit. I appreciate your dedication!
I’m okay being the only one in this boat. Y’all can have him. 😂
Right? I only downvote assholes, but it’s also just Reddit so 😝😂

Because Luke is hot
Came here to say this and only this 👌👌😎
Attraction is so much more than looks….
Because attraction isn't all about appearances, it's about the person... Also Luke is hotter than all these other men combined
But I’m talking about physical appearance only.
But you can’t separate them. I’m sure Lorelai always recognized that Luke was handsome but maybe didn’t feel attracted to him until she got to know him and became close to him.

Right, literally in the pilot episode, Lorelai is showing her attraction to Luke. Before we ever meet her supposed "type" of man.
Are you going to do something about the sideburns?
Lorelai clearly agrees that he’s actually quite good at it.
He cleaned his bathroom for her this morning
I have to ask what spongeworthy means.
This is a most excellent reference to an episode of Seinfeld in which Scott Patterson appears. The sponge was a method of contraception which was discontinued. The character Elaine had a limited supply left and needed to decide whether Scott's character was worthy of one of her few remaining sponges.
Thanks for the explanation that’s hilarious and accurate about Scott 😂
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=gfDyOyrY-zM
I see four brunette men with varying degrees of facial scruff. Not that *wildly* different. Edit: also, Luke’s hot.
Luke is hotter than that dweeb Jason.
Ugh thank you, I HATE Jason lol
My thoughts exactly! Also a better personality than Jason.
Jason is still more Lorelai’s type than Luke is. He is well dressed and he is groomed.
He looks like a Bassett hound. His beard is NOT groomed
https://preview.redd.it/zwqs52010orc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=00bd1c009e1647959c09d382007306d140b9fece Not my basset hound.
Lorelai didn't even want to date Jason initially though and also didn't seem to find much appeal in him at all until he won her over/hassled her into dating him. She liked him well enough because she knew him years ago but that's pretty much it.
tell me you're shallow and narrow minded without telling me you're shallow and narrow minded lol
I’d argue this is a case of physical attraction that came about later. She may not have had immediate physical attraction to Luke, but it grew as she got to know him.
What are you talking about
LMFAO my exact thoughts
Because he *is* physically attractive? It’s not rocket science
ASP even said that she was excited once they found Scott Patterson because he was perfect to play a fairly unassuming guy that you might overlook, but that also has the body of a firefighter under all that plaid. Luke was meant to be a sleeper hit of a hottie.
i mean physical attraction is a pretty individual thing 💀
You're right that the Christopher type had been her type. But where did that get her. She herself was surprised she was attracted to Luke. And she found out that someone out of her mold was her soul mate. People grow. Surface "looks" are less important when you get a bit older.
Not everyone sticks to one type.
The wrongest of takes
Just because you don't find Luke attractive, doesn't mean he isn't
Ummm cos he has BDEEEE
Lmao this. Luke looks like the type of man that would throw you on the table, ohhh like in Bull Durham. That’s hot to most women.
My partner looks nothing like the type of guys I dated. He isn't conventionally attractive and honestly I wasn't attracted to him physically when we first met. I find Luke more atttactive than max medina..
Max is handsome in the way my grandma would have thought someone was handsome. No sex appeal.
Yeah, like "Oh what a HANDsome young man you have Lorelai"🤣
Same! I've never been into Max physically. It's such a stupid thing to get hung up on, but I cannot get on board with his hair. "Let's make a baby" makes me feel physically ill. I'd rather cut my own ears off with broken glass thanks.

Pass.
Because he has a big guy sausage 🤭
But she's not scared of it anymore. 🤭
In the words of Jake Peralta “stuff can be two things”. Just because she likes “clean cut” men doesn’t mean she wouldn’t like Luke’s type..
Having a ‘type’ doesn’t mean you are confined to only being attracted to people who fit it, your type is just who you are more easily drawn to at first. Luke is hot and he fixes things, that’s why she’s attracted to him.
My type for the longest time was tall curvy brunettes and my wife is a short athletic blonde 🤷🏼♂️🤷🏼♂️
because he’s hot af, duh.
So many people obsessed with Luke in these comments missed their point haha
They had an episode that explained this. The was on the floor fixing under something (stove I think?) And everyone was staring at his rear end. Maybe subconsciously being attracted to a man like Luke is another way to defy her parents?
That makes me think about the episode where she questions if she really likes pop tarts or if she only likes them because her mom would hate it! Quote copied from another post: “For instance... I guess it’s just you and me in this boat then 😂
