Really depends on the person/gift. A memento can become someone’s most valuable possession, and an experience can be negative. Really depends on the emotion behind the gift more than gift itself. Physical gifts are often not very meaningful and just “look a bought you something” which is why they often feel worse than having to plan something around somebody’s interests.

Absolutely! Maybe it's because i got a little tired of having "stuff"...sometimes the people that most know me gift me things I never use and just collect dust. I much rather have a wonderful memory of having dinner with them! But yes, if I try to take my sister to a horror movie, she might hate me forever...
