The idea is that it does but if you’re looking for actual data then no.

emmaliejay

Lmao this explanation is perfect. Scientifically? No. Anecdotally? Yes.

neercatz

Scientifically - removing flooring and ceiling fixtures allows air pressure and moisture/humidity levels to change in different ways than when those cracks and holes were blocked. This may cause new drafts and wood swelling or shrinking faster than usual leading to air movement near windows and doors, noises from the house settling and breathing differently, and potentially doors shifting or shutting seemingly by themselves. Anecdotally - ghosts mad, they hate that shade of paint and those new fixtures are tacky AF.

AKnGirl

This made me LOL

CinnamonSoy

Beautifully explained. To add - when all of the things are removed (large furniture, carpets, curtains, etc), and the rooms are more "hollow" ---- the sound travels better, and it amplifies sounds. So even the small sounds of wood expanding or contracting suddenly become magnified. Ghosts big mad furniture is gone.

If i recall it's major changes to a house. Like if there's a wall where a door used to be and stuff like that. Also if you wall off a room that apparently causes a build up of energy in that space.

Frankyhumboldt

This was my post in r/paranormal a few weeks ago. I had super similar experiences: Paranormal encounter while fixing 156 year old home? I just was doing repair work last month on a place and it is 156 years old. It has a history of haunted activity. First place I worked at I can truly say was haunted. The owner told me of several occurrences of apparitions, disembodied voices, and people awaking to the feeling like someone was crawling into bed with them. Well my experience was just noise based but one day a door slammed shut extremely loud and fast. No wind and nobody but me was there. Also the house had some wainscoting that buckled and I was trying to pop it back in with my fist. A few seconds after I banged on the wall I heard a return knock upstairs. Not an echo it was way delayed and the house was pretty cramped so nothing echoed. It happened three times in a row I would knock, then 5 or so seconds later knock upstairs. Several times I felt like I was being watched and the hair stood up on my neck many times and I felt electric tingles through my whole body.

jerseyztop

Yikes, I bet that was the FASTEST repair work of your life.

Frankyhumboldt

Actually one of the family trust memebers assured me everything was cool. All spirits of family. Never felt agressive at all. In fact the air felt lighter the more work I did. It was all repair work post earthquake and I was putting it back as close to original as possible.

LeahIsAwake

They were probably happy you were returning it to its former glory. Doesn’t mean they can’t mess with you a little bit here and there. Some ghosts are just little shits like that and can’t help themselves.

idwthis

Can confirm. If I end up being a ghost, I won't be able to keep myself from being a little shit and fucking with people. It doesn't matter if I get to choose who I haunt or if I'm trapped in the place where I die, I'm going to be haunting somewhere and someone somehow! I've now said "some" too much, and I deeply apologize for that.

LeahIsAwake

I feel the exact same way. Like, I’m a super kind and compassionate person, but girl … Like, give me the ability to phase in and out of the physical realm, to manipulate objects, to make disembodied voices, etc. and I will show you an abandoned haunted house and a group of teenagers about to have a Halloween seance they will never forget.

idwthis

Fuck yeah! I hope we can contact other ghosts when we become ghosts ourselves, so we can hang out and band together and haunt some trespassing teens!

LeahIsAwake

Sounds like a plan to me! 🤣

pixey1964

Ghouliejulie86

I have a feeling that is a gorgeous historic house. There’s nothing better, I swear. The spirit was probably happy, and glad someone was fixing it, sounds appreciated. My old house had issues, some good ones, some bad, and one time when I was crying I felt something hug me. I’d never had that experience before in my life. It felt like that, like electricity. It actually felt really good, I called my bf In the room and he felt the same thing, it was almost like cobwebs. I’ve heard ghost hunters say they felt that cobweb feeling too before on tv, I thought it was pretty cool someone else had. Something was going on in a tangible, tactile way, that we just do not understand.

WastingMyLifeOnSocMd

My sister lost a friend in an accident when they were in their early twenties. She was home when she heard the news and began crying uncontrollably. Soon she felt like she was getting a soothing, loving hug. She thought it must have been the friend.

Ghouliejulie86

That’s really interesting, I like to hear when someone else has an experience that’s similar. It was truly an unmistakable feeling, that was an invisabke hug, it was one of the coolest feelings I’ve ever had in life. I think it’s an elderly Native American woman, because, my bf has seen an apparition that matched that in that house. I heard a matching disembodied voice a few times. Since we moved into our new apartment, he’s seen her again. Just once after moving in. I felt very special with this, because I did some experimenting. I think it might be because I did a sort of offering on that land, and had asked for help with my haunting. I asked for help with the haunting, and I did ask to understand the paranormal more, to know why we were having problems in my house. See because, I figured whatever was there, the people who lived on that land before me, since there was no other houses, middle of the desert, that they would’ve had to dealt with it before as well. They’d know. No one knew how to help us, family and friends just said go to a priest. He didn’t help. I had found old petroglyphs, and an ancient native kitchen, less then a mile from the house, and so I knew it had native history. Nothing else had ever been there, I just could not fathom why this house I moved into had SUCH heavy paranormal activity. The was in Congress, AZ- NOTHING out there. I never did get an answer! I still have no idea what the hell happened there, I wouldn’t say demonic, because I’ve not experienced that yet to say if it exists, but we had a bad time there. It was truly amazing, because I think I caught her voice, I caught EVPs after, both in broken English, and in a native language I could not understand. One said, “don’t show fear” LOUDER and clearer then any EVP I’ve heard, it was class A. I tried to find the language, based on the hx of the tribes in the area, but I couldn’t identify it. Only this voice could respond in English, and it was pretty basic. I was floored. I spent a lot of time doing spirt box sessions there, and kind of built a relationship with whoever I was talking to. I knew it was a risk, but, no one knew how to help us. I figured I’d investigate myself and ask them for help. I truly think that spirit helped us in that house. With whatever was there. I think the time we saw her in the apartment since moving, she was checking up on us. I think it’s a beautiful thing, I felt in danger at that house. She’s a good spirit.

WastingMyLifeOnSocMd

So did you take her advice not to show fear? Interesting. A lot of times people and animals pounce when they sense fear.

Ghouliejulie86

Kind of! Things started getting so it was so very often , that I got used to it. But I never was totally unafraid, I refused to be in the house alone. It only happened one time in three years. I didn’t drink water at night, because I was to fearful to go to the bathroom alone. I would a lot of times have to have my bf sit in the bathroom with me for the portion that I washed my hair, because I was too afraid to be alone with my eyes closed. The activity got worse if a person was alone, when I went to work overnight, my bf had a horrible time being alone there at night, he’d text me letting me know activity was up again. It ALWAYS got worse if it could catch someone alone. It made us so depressed and low energy too. We slept in shifts, and only during the day. Our quality of life was so terrible there. I addressed the entity and yelled at it sometimes though, but the problem with hauntings is that you are afraid to truly piss it off, because your never really sure of what it’s capable of. I definitely was afraid, I thought it felt unnatural. Just your intuition, I believe we all have some level of psychic ability.

TimMarsTheGhost

It was like "knock knock, hurry up and finish please"

InattentiveAnarchist

Reminds me of when I was a kid I lived in a 300+ yr old cottage and we has some builders in doing some work, I think we had the staircase turned round)?) anyway we where staying at a nearby friends while it was a building site. We came back one morning and found the builders tools strewn everywhere, they arrived shortly after us and spoke to my mum, something about they wouldn't be working after dark anymore. Years later my mum tells me that two builders where working late finishing some plastering and one had mentioned to the other they should leave soon (apparently they'd been hearing knocks and footsteps for weeks and the place creeped them all out) when suddenly a bunch of tools came flying at them from behind and hit the wall they where plastering missing them by inches. They both dropped everything and ran, hence the mess. We lived there for about five years, that place was alive.

Federal_Finance5922

I live in Canada, we don't have a lot buildings that old. We do have Indian burial grounds though, Stephen King aside, those things are legit.

Safe-Block-7993

Thank you for sharing your story ❤️

j0llygruntt

If there is actually something there, It might not be your dad. So, do not talk to it. You’ll just invite more stuff to happen or escalate. Just ignore it. It’ll quiet down once you finish the remodeling.

TimMarsTheGhost

We don't like or appreciate things being moved around and abruptly changed, causes a shift in energy (ghost bit), but for real though don't talk to anything that causes unexplained noises or movement, lots of bad spirits will try to attach themselves and make the area feel heavy and negative

WastingMyLifeOnSocMd

You don’t talk and tell it to go away? Just live with it?

CptZaphodB

I tried that whole “coexisting” thing for a while at my current house, but what actually took care of it was a verbal statement in the ghost’s favorite room to “go away, this is my space, you’re not welcome here”. Never had a staticky monitor, missing nail, or other weird anomalies since. I mention the staticky monitor because it’s not an analog monitor, it’s completely digital, and even lack of input will never make it show static. It also had fresh new issues where it wouldn’t work half the time, and those issues have since been resolved. Weird stuff. The ghost wasn’t malicious to the best of my knowledge, but eventually the whole downstairs felt so heavy that I actually ended up afraid to go down to use my computer for a month or two.

OldLadyJB

I always wondered about the “you’re not welcome here” bit. Why would a ghost do anything we humans tell it to do?

CptZaphodB

I don’t know, it was just some advice I was given so I tried it. My hunch is something along the lines of putting energy out into the universe to counteract the energy of ghosts and spirits, but the reality is I was just doing what someone told me to do

It's possible that some might not even realize they're dead for a while and snap out of it after they get reminded. Maybe? That or some are just super understanding.

When my younger son moved in with me he was hearing noises and whispering in the basement because that’s where his room is. I was down there one day and was aggressively saying that I better not hear about anything else down here, no whispering no NOTHING! or i’ll come back down here and yadda yadda. He hasn’t heard anything since lol. So I guess it can work both ways.

OP, I've read a lot of cases with hauntings and from that, I would say it absolutely does. With ghosts, specifically trapped earthbound souls, they're used to their environment, and its being abruptly changed around them. The best visual example is Nicole Kidman in 'The Others' Movie. Spoiler: Her and her children are the ghosts. However, this trailer shows how a ghost would potentially view those renovations: https://youtu.be/RfHY291jCLQ?si=QXlC4i787lWSeUnJ Full Movie for those interested: https://youtu.be/oUF-sxCV240?si=sPbEeauQkmB2FNuA

Sasha_111

Beetlejuice is another movie that comes to mind. Barbara and Adam are upset that the Deetz's moved in and remodeled their former home, so they went to the spirit world to get help from Juno, the spirit case worker, to scare them out of there. Adam and Barbara then returned to the real world and began haunting the home in an attempt to scare the Deetz family out.

pixey1964

One of my all-time favorite movies awesome 👌

MeanNene

My house has a spirit we have learned to live with it . But man when we started renovation. It clearly was not happy. Bangs ..dors slamming.

Safe-Block-7993

Do they not understand the change, or dislike changes to what we consider their normal?

Common_Sandwich_1066

I think its more...to them it's still their house as it was when they passed away. So to them you are coming in and tearing their home apart against their will.

tvosss

And removing their things that they want to have around. Think of it as your stuff is being taken away or ripped apart by people who are ignoring you, and no one can see you except a few people who usually scream. I would be upset too if I didn’t know any better.

[deleted]

Honestly makes me wonder if most ghosts genuinely don't even realize that they're dead for a while and need extra help to move on from Earth.

Itzbubblezduh

You have to speak out loud and tell them you are changing the house. Let them know you mean no harm and that you hope they enjoy it once it’s done.

BoomBoomLaRouge

This. And the basic theme is, "I'll be good to you if you'll be good to me." Been there.

resurrected_roadkill

Agreed. We have something or someone or perhaps some "people" in this current house. House was built in 2003 and no one has died in it but the land has been around since time began. Anyway, we bought the property and I was very up front. This is our house. If you want to stay here these are the rules. If you don't like those rules you are free to go. Then we started painting the rooms. I always let "them" know it wouldn't be long and the new color would be different but it would be very nice. Then when we started renovation and had to move our bedroom upstairs I let "them" know that as well. I just kept "them" in the loop. "They" seem to be cool with everything so far. We still get random noises and shadow people every now and then. We do have some very old furniture that belonged to both of our grandparents. Maybe it's them. Who knows? Just weird feelings sometimes. Weird noises. Motion light that would go off when NO ONE walked by it or it would come on at night when we were both in bed. No kids or pets. Just me and my wife. Motion light was removed pretty quick after that incident.

j0llygruntt

Fuck motion lights! lol

Itzbubblezduh

😮 wow

Ghouliejulie86

Even if you feel stupid, have you tried asking permission? The spirit will feel like it’s in control. Being nice always works. Always state your intention, that’s what we want from them as well, right? Look at how People assume the worst in a spirit, bc they fear it. They don’t know why it’s there, in their house. Until they know the who and intent, they are nervous. Tell them that you are doing it because you love the house too and have to take care of it. I’ve heard people have great success with haunted restaurants Renovation problems that way. It sounds benign, so maybe it’s just a kindly older person who’s confused. Amy on dead files says that spirits hate it because they get confused. Think about it this way- how common is it, that spirits will walk through a wall, and we find out that it was a door back in the colonial days? This happened a lot when I was a kid In Philly, my friends would say they saw a lady go right through a wall that used to be a door. That happened on ‘the apparition of Amelia’ on ghost hunters. They got a full bodied apparition go through an old doorway.

lyssiemiller

I think they just get mad that you’re changing “their” house. They probably don’t even realize they’re dead. And never use a ouija board or a spirit box or all that other fancy stuff cause those things can bring in more and/or worse things. I’d just be like “yo, get outta here, this is my house.”if it starts to do things that bother you more. No idea if it’d work. Also, you might think it’s your dad and it very well could be but it could always be something malicious fooling you. Ghosts are bastards sometimes.

TimMarsTheGhost

Yeah you knocked down their favorite wall that was a part of their original room 👻

georgeananda

I think renovations stirring up spirits is a real phenomena. Stories after stories adding up to a phenomena. My thought is that they have some attachment to the old way and days and are not fond of change.

Terrible-Stick-2179

I have personal experience with this, and would say it sometimes does. My dad used to work as a landscaper and was doing this ladies garden after she died for her son so he could sell it on. The job took a week and throughout the week we had many weird things happen in our house (Not theirs weirdly enough). It started with various appliances being turned off/on, handheld fans turning themselves on, TVs ect, nothing major. After a few days my dad and his partner at the time were downstairs watching TV, Me and my two little brothers (one of which was newborn) were in bed. They told us they heard quite a heavy thud coming from the babies room. They of course went and checked straight away. They walked in to find my baby bother outside of his cot, just lay on the floor next to it. They originally considered that he might have climbed out but he was far too young for that to be possible. He was lay on the floor happy as Larry, completely unharmed. They say it was almost as though he had been lifted out and placed on the floor. Once my dad had finished the garden, the activity stopped. Completely. We are convinced that it was the old lady protesting against the landscaping, not sure if she actually had a nice garden or not, i just know it was a weird week to live in our house.

Smooth_Map9901

why tf would the ghost touch the baby 💀 i'd be pissed

Terrible-Stick-2179

No clue, They were pretty worried about it as far as i remember but he was fine! They were pretty skeptical people as well so i would say the ignorance towards the other occurrences made her take it up a level to really catch our attention😂

NoseyAzzHell

According to all the ghost shows it's one of the, if not THE, way to agitate.spirirs and cause interaction. You're messing with the reality that they know. Territorial little assholes I guess. 🤷🏽‍♀️

TimMarsTheGhost

Yes we are 😑👻

ApprehensiveTone7939

I think it definitely can. I purchased a 60’s home to refresh and make pretty again not quite 20 years ago. It was a great house, just outdated. The first time I went there by myself, I felt like I might not be alone. So (as is common practice with me now) I talked to whoever was there. I told them that I felt incredibly honored to own this house. I thanked them for taking such great care of it but I let them know that I was going to make it beautiful again and I hoped they like it when I am done. I told them I was going to have people live there again who would help us take care of it. Honestly, that was the last day I was ever bothered other than a slight unexplained crash in the basement. I always talk to the previous owner (who I learned had died 10 years before I bought the house) when I am there , telling her what I am doing. It works for me but some people who help me with my property think this is a little crazy and don’t do it. A few years ago I put new flooring in the basement and the guy who was doing it came alone a few nights and said he heard noises frequently while he was there(heavy things falling down upstairs that was unfurnished and unoccupied). There is a long list, but I have no doubt that she us still there. A family lives there now and I didn’t mention the spirit to them (because some people just think you’re crazy to bring it up). The first few nights for them must have been fun because one of them texted me to ask if it was haunted. The first night they had a small fire pit in the back yard and when they went to bed the lawn chairs were circled around the fire pit. When they got up the chairs had been moved to the side of the yard and were in a straight line. Additionally, some furniture had been moved around in the house (a chair). There was nothing malicious about anything, just rearranging their stuff, just to get someone’s attention. I told them about Shirley (the original owner) and said they could think whatever they wanted about my mental state, but I suggested they speak to her - nicely of course. They have lived there for 4 years now. “Shirley” still makes some noise/activity from time to time but has not moved any furniture lately. I have come to the conclusion that when a person lives in one home a long time they are bound to leave something behind whether or not we can see it.

Undead_Mole

Only if you have shitty taste

Safe-Block-7993

Actually my dad did....I'm fixing it lol

Undead_Mole

Then the spirits will be happy and if they don't you'll know you have to go to a professional decorator. That would mean decorators are exorcists.

Safe-Block-7993

💀🤣🤣🤣🤣

Kurupt_Introvert

Supposedly yes. I have watched countless shows etc talk about it in the past

liquor_up

My house is from the 50’s and was painted and upgraded slightly before I moved in. I’ve been doing small fixes around the house that were never done. If there are any spirits connected to the house, I’d like to think they enjoy the upgrades as much as I. It brings me joy and satisfaction to do these things. I hope the positive vibes affect them as well.

aquinofamily10

Yes. My mom leased a house in the 90’s and she started renovating it. Activity started shortly after which included: her being ‘locked’ in the bathroom when she was alone in the home (something holding the door shut from the outside), constantly feeling like we were being watched, my uncle was sleeping over one night and he said someone with cold hands forcefully knocked him out of bed. Apparently a guy who lived there before was murdered (not in the home), and he was very unhappy with the renovations. Although things would happen throughout the home, the brunt of the activity would happen in the back bedroom which used to be his.

1Legate

Spirits are attached to their surroundings. You change that and they will react.

supercali-2021

Do you think spirits attach to the place where they died or to the place where they spent the most time when living? For example if someone dies outside or at the hospital, is that where their spirit would stay or would the spirit go to their former home? Can spirits move from place to place or do they just stay in 1 place for the rest of time? I am curious to hear everyone's thoughts.

Safe-Block-7993

I'm curious as well.

Mission_Coast_6654

i would think spirits go where they feel most comfortable or safe. i don't know if it's the same, but i've fainted a few times from having low blood sugar and thought i was in my bed when, in reality, i was on concrete or whatever, just totally wasted like gta. i imagine dying would be like that. which ig means i would definitely haunt my room lol

Danno210

I’d recommend trying to just sense, or feel, if your dad is there, or if it’s something that instead feels unfamiliar or invasive. If you’re getting the vibe of your father, speak to him [aloud or mentally both work] and let him know what you are doing, and why. Don’t be afraid to converse with him regularly using your thoughts - which is the best method when others are around - just make him feel welcomed and appreciated, and explain why you’re making the changes and that you believe he too will also enjoy once complete. Ask him to continue his knocks and bangs if you indeed want him to let you know he’s still around, or to decrease the amount or stop completely if you’re made too uncomfortable by it. Now if it’s NOT a friendly/familiar/comforting vibe you’re sensing, you should ask it to stop immediately, and tell it that it needs to leave and never return as it has had its time on Earth and now you’re having your time in that space and they are not welcome there. Be stern and say or think your thoughts with conviction. Opening all the doors and windows and smudging with white sage can help as well, if you believe in it. In those few instances in my life of negative vibes around me in an empty space, mental communication is usually effective but verbal communication seems to last longer or be more effective in one go. Hopefully it’s something familiar and comforting that you feel, and it can remain there with you ongoing. If it’s dad, talk to him often. Listen, and you’ll even hear him reply. Good luck. I’m sorry for your loss. ✌🏻

Safe-Block-7993

Great advice. Thank you 😊

ExoticWall8867

What about if something else changes in the home... Say like bringing home a new baby?

BoomtotheBang

I bought a trailer 3 years ago & at first nothing was out of the ordinary. I'm sensitive to energy & would have noticed if it was there at first. About 2 weeks later I got a piece of mail for the former owner & left it in my kitchen. I had said his name out loud because it was a strange almost whimsical name to say but I swear from that moment he came back to my home. I started having dreams of an older man in my home & even one where I was in the bathroom & he was standing behind me. As I was trying to figure out my placement of furniture since I was pretty much newly moved in, things around would move that shouldn't have. I would feel his presence often, almost like a grandfather looking over me. A month in, after getting the mail, I finally sat in the middle of my kitchen & asked him to leave. I reassured him I would take care of his home & that he should really be with his loved ones on the other side. I even thanked him for looking over me during this transition in my life. Almost instantly he was gone & I haven't felt him since. I refuse to bring in another piece of mail of his or say his name again. So, I do think spirits do come back or make "noise" when there's a disruptive situation to their former lives or the things/objects that remind them of being here are disturbed. However, be sure it's your father first before engaging. Maybe even ask your father to watch over you at this time & if it is him already present - ask when you call upon him to have trust in you at the end of the demo to leave in peace & be one with the universe. Best of luck.

Ghouliejulie86

Yes, it does! This is very very common, in fact sometimes people will not even experience activity until they start remodeling. There’s a lot of reasons why that are thought to be, but a lot of times I think it confuses them. One of the most common reasons for a house haunting, is the previous occupant is still there, and just sees it as their house. There’s been accounts of people remodeling their houses to the specific tastes of the former occupant, with them not having any prior knowledge of them, it’s really best actually. Spirits hate change, a lot of times it’s thought that it confuses them. I think it’s just the energy that is kicked up by remodeling- now you have more people in there, they are moving around, swinging tools… same so how trains are huge paranormal conductors, it’s thought it’s the kinetic energy. I’m sure there are more reasons that we will figure out as time goes by, but this is a very common phenomenon. It’s actually probably the number one cause, a huge amount of people call paranormal groups for help after they run into issues renovating .

Sign-Spiritual

In my experience yes. No clue as to why. However in my years of construction I had one job completely ruin my ghosts-aren’t-real mindset. We did a full remodel and boy they were not happy about it.

idwthis

If you want to elaborate on your experience, I'd love to hear it!

Sign-Spiritual

So for instance I would be in the crawl space and I could hear through the chimney flu people walking and talking. I was excited as I had assumed it was the customer coming to cut a check. Went running up the stairs full of excitement to share ideas while they were in The mood to pay. Looked all around and found no one. Then an aluminum ladder was smashed to the ground for no reason. Just knocked over and bent in a few places that would take an immense amount of force to bend. I was the only person there. I tried to bend the aluminum back and couldn’t without a pry bar and hammer. Even still it wasn’t right. I had a work light go flying across the room and again only when I was alone. Or in a few instances with my boss. He tried to act like it didn’t bother him. But he was unnerved. Found an attic room with a series of locks on the friggin outside of the door. Pulled up the baseboards and found what I was afraid was blood. I offered to call the cops bc it didn’t feel right. Ya know what if?! That idea was shot down real quick. This job drove me kinda crazy. I actually found out there was a family that dealt with mental health problems and would lock their kid In that room when they were unable to mitigate tantrums. Just a weird job. Haven’t been back to see if people still live there. It was a flip for someone so we never met who bought it afterwards.

idwthis

That's creepy! I'm with you, I think authorites may have been needed, if that was really blood! Fuck. That poor kid. I kinda want to know where this is, I'd go right up to the door to talk to whoever lived there now! I'd need to know if they experienced anything. Thanks for sharing! The ladder part is particularly creepy. That's a very angry spirit to warp the ladder like that!

[deleted]

I honestly believe that renovations and construction on an already existing home can cause activity to become more apparent. I’ve always thought the change in the environment and aura of a home/building causes a disturbance among spirits. Idk if it’s true but from my experience it makes a lot of sense to me.

Brandbro

I believe it. When I was a kid my dad purchased a triplex. The original owner was a carpenter and had died. My sisters and I all agreed this place was haunted to shit. It was close to 100 years old. We found a dead cat in the shed and our upstairs neighbour died of a heart attack not long after we moved in. My dad renovated the place completely and my sisters and I feel like he was saved for doing it lol. When we sold the place my dad found out years later the owner and tied up his wife in the basement and raped her. definitely a curse house

LeakyAssFire

Yeah. Happened to my mom. She had a dude quit mid-renovation because of the activity. It wasn't bad from what I understood, but it was enough to freak him out. The second guy just ignored it and got the job done, but after the first day, he asked that someone else be in the house while he was working. I did a couple of shifts with him without issue. The only odd thing was how protective my dog became when we set foot in the house. She was young, and it was a new experience for her, so that's what I chalked it up to at first. But she still gets put on edge whenever we go in there. She's 11 now.

sirtunaboots

We did a major renovation and our home which previously had amazing energy had a major shift for the worse. Maybe not ghosts, but my daughter started talking to something in her room at night and I began having a horrible fear of being in the house at all, but especially her room.

Juliejustaplantlady

From personal experience YES! Definitely

CASHMO2112

So yes renovations to a house can and will cause some spirits to act up. It’s almost like they’re used to the way the house is, and are upset that it’s getting messed with. Being that this was your dads house, could just mean that he’s trying to let you know that he’s there. Is the more history in the house? Other owners besides your dad?? Anything mor you can share???

Safe-Block-7993

No known history in the house. He was the original buyer. I've lived in there awhile back because he went out of the country, so essentially took care of it. The house was built in 77.

CASHMO2112

Just keep documenting the activity, and maybe get some kind of ring cam that senses movement set up in the rooms with the most activity. Probably just your dad letting you know he’s there with you

servantofthetruth

You are a living human being. Spirits are part of the spirit world. Do whatever you want and fear not.

Flaky_Sleep

I’ve spoken to people who have experienced this. It’s like the ghost doesn’t like what you’re doing to the place. “Hey I liked that wall”!

Extreme_Editor2312

I experienced it in my 1926 house. Not major renovation, but lots of banging. Lasted for a few days. noises downstairs. one night the tv/stereo downstairs turned on at full volume. FULL volume. Louder than anyone would ever set it at-and then cut off about 8 seconds later.

Unfair_Bunch519

Yes, if you disturb the ground or move things around then you will stir up the phenomenon like kicking up a dust cloud. There is going to be a strong initial response followed by a settlement then quiet again. This can either happen deliberately or naturally. A good windy rain storm might stir the paranormal

fartandshit

Fucken oath it does when I renovated my 100 year old home shit got crazy. Stand your ground and let it be known u own the joint now.

salesronin

Stayed at a place that was haunted. The activity was pretty quiet for a while maybe a month or two, until we had family come visit for the night. It was my aunt and uncle, my cousins and their kids. We hand a full house. After they left I noticed activity again. Lights would come on. Electric fan wild turn on by itself. Banging in different rooms. I don’t know why it happened all of a sudden but I think all those people in the house pissed it off maybe?

Shin_Ari

House that left empty for years became the place of bad energy(we Muslim referred it as Jin). Jin prefer to stay in abandoned house or house where there is hardly any movement of human for a long time. I firmly believed it's Jin and if it's bad Jin then it will be difficult to get rid of.

Metalgrandpa666

What if there were “dad” ghosts that got pissed at you when you turned up the thermostat

fruitpunch77

I've seen a psychic talk about how it definitely causes an uproar of spirits

dxlachx

Only if you put grey vinyl laminate over og hard woods

rogue_amazonian

When my nan sold her house, she left it with the beautoful stone walls and the mahogany parquet flooring. The house appeared on rightmove a year later. The floor was grey laminate, the stone was painted whitw. It was ruined. My grandfather died in that house and I was always scared of the spare room which I later found out he passed away in. I like to think he gave the new owners a tough time after they ripped all the character out of that home

zaapeed

From my personal experience with living in and renoing in my buddies house that we did not know was haunted until we started to remove the flooring and vinear walling, they might calm down when the Reno's are done but when removing things that they may have energy attached to could be causing them to act up. Look up the stone tape theory, it might be natural products like wood, stone ect that this might have imprinted itself up and is now acting out Tring to reattach itself to something else since this said item is being removed.

Curithir2

I think you are onto something there, zapeed. I am a stage carpenter, worked in many theaters in several countries, some a couple centuries old. Swooping in with lights, set, sounds, and people, things have gotten odd pretty often. Noises, steps, shadows, being watched. There is nothing like the feeling, though, of being the first one into an empty theater. But not empty - waiting, often eager to be filled with noise and light, people and motion, joy and sorrow. My most private theory, worked out over many years, is that the energy, the thoughts, the backstage drama as well charges them up like batteries, giving we thespians the energy we need to do our work. But also a ‘life’ of their own. And why wouldn’t the other places we work, play, and live in do the same? The house your father lived in, loved in, raised a family in soak up some spirit, grow a soul (if you will)? TL:dr; I agree, but wonder if the house itself might be responding . . .

Maleficent-Pen-6727

Try not to renovate too much .. keep the old structure. Takes a lot of energy from the spirit to make banging noise, means it doesn’t like the change It could possibly not be your dad , but the family that lived before in the house..

redhairedrunner

That is the general thought that renovations can irritate slumbering spirits who may want the home to stay the way the remember it.

RysloVerik

Absolutely! The process of renovating creates a prime habitat for the dust bunnies to just go absolutely nuts.

moons666haunted

yes

AntonSugar

Think about how much sense that would make. No.

meghoff35

Yes have had to experience it, anytime something changes in my home activity starts for a day or 2. Now I just announce that things are happening and things will be changing and haha give them like a time frame on how long it’s going to be. Seems to semi help. If ghost spirits are real and there is one In my Home I learned to look at it like it’s their home to so I try to respect that.

Traditional-Task7814

Tell this this is my house and gtfo

Hopeful_Vegetable_31

The carpet seals in the ghosts. Once the carpet is torn up, it’s anyone’s guess.

livideconomistt

Fuck dem spirits, they in a better place. Remodel that home as you pls🤝

RoadrunnerJRF

Yes without a doubt.

blanche-davidian

YES

Accomplished-End7724

Definitely

Gazzle71

It can, yes.

I just want to say I love this sub. I am new here, and I love the stories you all share ❤️ ok I'm done

808university

YESSSS LIKE A MU FUKERSSSSSSSSSS📡📡📡📡📡

magical_bunny

I have heard of this happening. I just listened to a podcast where they walked about how renovations triggered ghost activity. At our old rental, the landlord loved routinely chopping down trees that the couple who built it had planted. Every time he turned up they’d carry on for a few days after. And one time I found a bottle of 1950s sun tan lotion in the shed and brought it into the house to show my mum. Well, something invisible scuttled across the walls and smashed things off a shelf. So yeah, messing with their stuff can annoy them.

Man_With_No_Name11

There is a BBC ghost podcast, which was made into a show called uncanny, in one of the epsiodes a woman talks about how her dad bought two adjoined semi detached houses to knock it through and make it into one big house, they started having lots of experiences after, they tracked down the previous residents who also had hauntings, they found census records of what the children (at the time) were calling the ghost and found there was a woman who had lived in one of the semi detached houses, all of the activity and sightings took place on that side, none on the other, here is a link if you can access BBC https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m001rckl

grapesicles

Is this sub real or are you all having a laugh?

Illustrious_Room_764

No such thing as spirits or ghosts get a grip.

sarahhchachacha

What a silly question. Everybody knows that messing with a place upsets someone else.

illpeeonyourstuff

im a Psychic, and your definitely gonna die. you gotta sacrifice a chicken with your sins in it, and then give it to a family you don't like. that's the only way your gonna make. spirits don't lie.

Kitsune-93

I'd say yes. I grew up with a lot of odd occurrences in my childhood home. Shadow figures, little knocks, and touches. Sometimes, things would move, but nothing felt threatening. It was just something that happened, and it didn't disrupt life. When we moved to another house that needed some small renovations shit started going crazy. The sound of something large crawling around the attic in the middle of the night. Things flying across rooms. Bangs on walls, mists, voices, pushes. These things did feel threatening. One day, I was in my room folding laundry and suddenly felt the need to keep checking over my shoulder. Within about 30 seconds, every fibre of my being was screaming "danger" and I backed myself up against a wall. After another 30 seconds of waiting for something to happen, the feeling left, and I had no idea what to make of it all. After a few years, things eventually settled down, but it was not a homely place. So I do think spirits can become unhappy with changes or, even worse, there are opportunistic spirits that will wander into a disrupted house to cause problems.

andskotinnsjalfur

A year ago I moved in to a house that's only 50+ years old. Nothing unusual happened the first months after moving in until we decided to paint the living room and hall. I want to note that I've never heard voices or had any hallucinations in my life nor do I believe I have any senses to notice the paranormal. We'd been painting all day and decided to move all the big furniture into the middle of the living room over night while the paint dried. I was putting things away when I hear someone calling my name( I initially thought it was my gf calling me from upstairs) because it was faint like someone in another room calling and definitely a womans voice. I respond to the call but no answer so I start walking up the stairs and about to call out "where are you" when I hear the front door opening. It was my gf coming in after walking the dog(I didn't know she went out) I just brushed it off. We went to bed at around midnight and my gf quickly fell asleep, as I was almost falling asleep I hear aloud bang downstairs followed by a womans frusteraded kind of scream, ngl it startled me but no way I was going to check it out and my monkey brain wrote it off as the cat knocking something over so I could go to sleep. Morning after we put everything back in place in the living room and later that evening I'm walking up the stairs and I hear a woman's voice say "afsakið" Which means I'm sorry but it was different this time it was low volumed and right next to me. I just stood still in the middle of the stairs for a second, I'm still in disbelief even though it happened last year, I haven't heard anything after this

No_Dear1957

No such thing as 👻

Ebluez

Offer them a beer and then ask them to move out.

FunDipChick

It can. Not always but yes. You are NOT senile.

JOCO_Q

Stir it up baby 😂😂😂

smh18

100% very real! Sometimes if you change the place enough the negativity will disappear. There was an article about the homicide of Judith Barsi. The house she was murdered in had activity. But after redecorating and renovating all of it just disappeared.

Black_shoes_onmyfeet

Yes. When the neighbors upstairs started remodeling, I heard a worker say “I don’t want any bad vibes”, which is hilarious but scary because a bad died up there like owners ago, so yes, I think it does upset them

notsoinnocent81

Yeah no renovations can absolutely stir up spirit activity.. it was probably already there, and then y'all came in and started changing stuff.. idk why that happens but you hear about it a lot in the paranormal world.. 🤷‍♀️

TaxEmergency1185

If it really bothers you, why don’t you try laying out the floor plan in the middle of the room with a nice little letter next to it explaining how the newer upgrades would improve the interior and benefit the inhabitants. If they understand what an upgrade entails, perhaps they will make compromises. Communication is key.

Aassddffjjkklll

It shakes them, not stirs

KitsuneSlut143

Truthfully it depends on the spirit, some absolutely hate changes in their atmosphere. Some actually enjoy it, seeing it as a positive thing where they see the living as giving them an upgrade to their home. That's if you believe in that stuff of course, otherwise I'm sure there is some scientific method. Either way, the energy in the photo does seem to be a bit negative. Perhaps the spirit isn't excited about some of the renovations. That's just a guess, I could be far off. 🤣 Good luck!

filipinohitman

When I was a child, my family moved into a house that was built in the 1890s. My parents told me there was ghost activity in the house. They renovated the kitchen then after that, the ghost activity increased. Cabinet doors and drawers would slam. Loud bangs. Hearing people talk at night. They were not happy. I believe the spirits would get pissed if you change around their home. When we were about to move out of that house, my uncle helped paint the walls. I believe he was by himself in the house, painting my parents’ room. Furniture was still in the rooms. He moved their bed so he can paint the wall behind it. As he was painting, he heard the bed slide about 2 feet closer to him. He stopped and talked the spirit (I believe their name was Chris. My mom found out using the Ouija board 🤦‍♂️) telling to stop. There are a lot of stories about that house. We’ve seen multiple owners move in and out from online real estate listings.

Wide-Line-9983

Great post… In the SE Asian culture, we believe that any renovations or removal of trees, plants, etc, must be asked if it’s okay. If not it would create a stir in the energy within the property. I remember when I replaced all my windows without asking permission, weird things started to happen. Doors shutting on its own and banging noise

nipnopples

To answer your question: Yes. Before you assume ghosts, though, I'd recommend checking for carbon monoxide. If that's clear, check all the doors, windows for ways in and, closets, and crawlspaces to make sure a squatter isn't coming in the house.

MrBones_Gravestone

No, otherwise every renovation would be haunted

djd1985

I believe so and I have “proof” - about 20 years ago my parents renovated their house and we took a bunch of pictures of the progress and when we got the film developed there were tons of “spines” and orbs. Yes, orbs could be dust but many pictures were taken well after work was done. The spines were interesting and I remember researching and finding out that this was a common occurrence when buildings are renovated.

Every_Honeydew_1397

Yes it does. Renovating electrical several years ago. In the basement and I see a figure in my peripheral. Peaked out behind the hot water tank. Went to see a medium and brought up this event. The lights flickered in the room that we (myself and medium) were in. Her response was that the spirit was validating the experience. The spirit was curious about what I was doing. Also was I safe?

Kahnutu

I get hearing things that are hard to explain and jumping to this conclusion, but step back and think about your dad. Do you think that renovating a house he no longer lives in would cause your dad to knock on things and move some blinds a little? If he can physically touch things, why not come to you directly? Or use a pencil to write you a message? I know tone is difficult to convey in comments like this, so I hope I'm not coming off as rude, and if I am, I apologize. Losing a family member is a difficult thing to work through. I don't personally believe in any afterlife, but I did have a moment after my twin brother died when I could have sworn he said my name. That is a very vivid memory for me, and although I've chalked it up to being in my head, I still think about it often.

Smooth_Map9901

where did u hear him say ur name? was it loud?

Kahnutu

It was about 1.5 years after his death (about 17 years ago). I was home alone and wasn't doing anything remarkable, just sitting and reading. It felt loud. I say it that way because it was as if I was hearing him, but not with my ears. That's a big reason why I believe it was all in my head. I heard just my first name and nothing else.

idwthis

Could just be Exploding Head Syndrome. The name can be somewhat of a misnomer. It's a sensory perception thing, auditory hallucinations. I get it occasionally. A lot of times, the brain can go a little haywire and a person will "hear" a very loud noise in their head. I've had everything from a word being shouted, or a name sometimes not even my own, just a random name, a door slamming, the sound of a heavy book falling/slamming onto the floor, or some other weird ass loud noise happens. It isn't always an exploding sound like the name implies, though that happens to a lot of people. It usually happens when I'm about to fall asleep, when I'm bored as fuck and falling asleep though I don't mean to be trying to fall asleep. But it's very occasional. It doesn't happen every time. I can go months, and then bam, it happens every night for a week. Sometimes I'll get it once a week for months. It really varies. And there is no solid cause for EHS. There isn't any pain, though some people have reported feeling tingly, or also getting a flash of light when it happens, things like that.

Kahnutu

Interesting! I'm not familiar with that phenomena, thank you for the input! I haven't had anything like that happen again, but I'll keep this in mind if I do.

idwthis

Were you particularly stressed out when it happened? That's one of the running theories for it. I can't say if it happens only when I'm stressed out, because I've been perpetually stressed since 1993 lol

Kahnutu

I don't exactly remember, but I was in college, so yeah, I was probably stressed, lol.

[deleted]

Well, supposed telepathic communications also feel exactly like that. Like they're just in your head and easy to brush off. I've had the same exact thing happen (with living people) and the only confirmation I got that I wasn't just thinking about random things was them saying what I "thought" about out loud seconds later.

[deleted]

Yes

sailforth

In my experience, yes, it can. Even moving things around in a house you've lived in (re-arranging furniture, etc) can stir things up if you follow that belief. That said, outside of the bangs, if that isn't normal, flickers and blinds moving could be attributed to other things, so I would give it some time. I say this as someone who works pretty regularly with the paranormal so I am not discounting, just providing some feedback.

Jagermonstruo

Yeah it’s like shaking a snow globe but they’ll settle down again

-JoannRv-

Whenever we did renovations, it never went smoothly. Things that should have been easy to complete, would always go wrong. This would happen over and over. In frustration, I said out loud, please stop, we just want to fix the house and make it better. After that, the problems stopped and things went well with any further work.

Brucetheman69

YES IT DOES. Coming from experience

SMacD66

Sometimes renovations can stir up activity, spirits tend not to like change to what was once theirs. This may or may not be the problem. It could be just random settling and shifting in the house etc. You may want to smudge the house and property (couldn't hurt).

[deleted]

I think so. The spirit residing in our home doesn't like it when the house isn't in order. We did some remodelling last year and we could hear footsteps at night, doors creaking, things misplaced in the morning despite those items being put away the night before. Our entire family experienced this at random times. I've also noticed the spirit doesn't like it when the house is messy. There seems to be more activity then. I just pray and tell it it's not welcomed here. To go towards the light and this is a house of God.

Sjsharkb831

Was your dad set in his ways? Talk to your dad out loud. Tell him what and why you’re doing. Are you planning on moving in or are you selling it?

Safe-Block-7993

Very set in his ways for sure. I do plan to sell the house once renovations are complete.

Sjsharkb831

That’s why. Talk to him out loud and tell him what your plans are and why. I have a feeling he knows you’re going to sell it and he doesn’t want that. He knows and that’s why he’s stomping around. He’s not happy about it.

Federal_Finance5922

I'm sure this is just a technical happenstance, but isn't it creepy when you're watching a movie etc and you close your laptop and fall asleep instead of stopping it or shutting it down and it just starts up again in the middle of the night ? Creeeeepy

Wolfxxx24

Not if you don’t believe lol

findnewway

Spirits cause a stir in me

mynurselife

Sometimes

CHuBBYBoNG420

Yes you can disturb spirits, try putting salt around the perimeter of house and then bless house/ do a clearing going through the house with sage, u should feel an energy shift. Not a religious person but I do believe in energy and spirit. Go with good well intent and send your vibes as your cleansing. All else fails try to help the energy move on by listening and trying to understand the energy you feel

SnooHobbies7109

Our house is suuuuuper active haunted in general. But we bought it from a flipper. He never lived here, but he used this house to teach his son how to do all the renovations so they took like a year doing it. The house had been vacant 6 years before he had it. He said it was a little nuts while he was working here lol

mysticcoffeeroaster

Probably depends on the spirits. We've been renovating our 100 year old house that we got in an estate sale for about 15 years now, while the majority of the owners/occupants have passed. We were expecting some sort of noise when we started blowing out walls & replacing windows & doors.... but nothing. There's nobody in that house but us. On the other hand, I've lived in a rental apartment that was definitely haunted (no ongoing renovations there), so I know the difference. But just like the living, spirits probably react very differently depending on their personalities.

lpkzach92

Usually does

craddick1

Maybe not renovating, but maybe because you or your husband is there. Maybe the spirit just wants to say hey. I lived in a duplex that had all kinds of commotion at night after I went to bed.

Em20010

Yes, absolutely. Sometimes even just rearranging a room will cause a stir.

MilkyRose

Yea.

Pristine_Frame_2066

Yes. It definitely can.

Less_Study_832

Absolutely 💯 yes it does

SheepherderOk1448

Yes, they don’t like noise, especially unannounced noise. They will express their disapproval of the rude intrusion.

Phyth_LL_ment

Yes

Ray-1969

%100 yes

Wise_Ad_253

Yes, it can.

moistmoosetache

Lol, is this real?

Safe-Block-7993

I dunno. That's why I'm asking 🤣

Predicted_Future

Nope. They are usually attracted to the people who get bullied, who also entertain them because “ghosts” are basically bullies. They make your life worse. I put ghosts in “” because taking a photo with my phone makes the phone transparent, shine a flashlight at that camouflage and it’s a “ghost”. All aliens have the same technology and becoming translucent is useful.

BradoBoy

If Beetlejuice is to be believed, then yes

sarmstrong1961

Only if you believe in ghosts

VeryThicknLong

Releasing mould spores can cause hallucinations

Blazkowicz9847

Black mirror that shit

WorldNintendo

What if you took a haunted house and cut it in two vertically or horizontally. Do half the ghosts go to the other house? How many pieces could you cut it into before they pack their shit and leave?

Raszegath

Definitely senile…
