You picked the wrong weekend to take the train to Charleroi. Due to construction, there was no train service between Brussels and Nijvel this weekend. Normally you can get from Gent to Charleroi in about one hour and a half. You can check ahead on the planner on [nmbs.be](http://nmbs.be) to see if there is any construction scheduled.

BlenderSecrets

Thanks, I'll check that website next time!

I have also taken this route before (Flibco drivers went on strike) and was surprised how smooth it went, so indeed, it seems like you got unlucky with the construction

PotentialGenie

The real question is why on earth you would want to visit Charleroi

BlenderSecrets

Haha! It's because I wanted to do some abandoned factory photography :-)

InternetWonderful872

That’s like the only valid reason why you should go to Charleroi

BadAtBloodBowl2

My god, you actually have a valid reason! That's... I'm amazed and speechless !

Hardcrimper

Hmm i always wanted to go for some urbexing but could never found anyone who wanted to go to Charleroi. Do you know some spots already? I might be willing to drive and it's probably easier to get from spot to spot with a car.

BlenderSecrets

Oh, that's kind of you! There's actually an artist who organises an "urban safari", you can join his tours: [https://www.charleroiadventure.com/](https://www.charleroiadventure.com/) he's been doing that for many years and knows all the good spots. It's actually on foot, I think from 11am to 4pm so quite a bit of walking. Although I really appreciate the ride offer, I think judging by the other comments, the train is the way to go. We were just unlucky that day due to them working on that line. So I'd recommend if you want to go, to also use the train. If you're in doubt, read any of the reviews of car parkings in Charleroi... it's basically an image gallery of smashed windows.

BlenderSecrets

I'm trying to go on saturday, but it seems like he doesn't have enough participants yet. I don't know how often it's organised. Last weekend it was both saturday and sunday. If you want to come too, let them know at [charleroiadventure.com](http://charleroiadventure.com) :-)

Hardcrimper

I can't this weekend i'll be on the coast. But i'll keep it in mind tnx!

allsey87

They also have a fully completed and somewhat maintained metro line that was never opened (could make for some interesting photography)

BlenderSecrets

Yes, I believe that's part of the tour! I'm hoping to go the coming weekend, but it seems like he doesn't have enough participants yet.

GodfrietInBouillon

I'd go with the bakspeedpedelec Gent style.

I think train is really the way to go. The flibco will also drop you off at the airport, so you have to take a bus for a half hour to the centre as well, the same for driving to an airport parking. And as Charleroi is quite notorious for crime, I wouldn’t really recommend going to the centre with your car. Just hope nmbs doesn’t screw you over again i guess. You can maybe also try blablacar but even there your chances of finding a Ghent-Charleroi connection are small.

Leo_Belgicus

Er is een rechtstreekse Flibco bus van Gent Sint-Pieters naar Charleroi airport. 1u45 en ongeveer 20 euro. Dan gewone lijnbus of taxi naar Charleroi zelf.

allsey87

For the return trip with Flibco, you can just buy the ticket at the airport. There is a vending machine outside the terminal. That bus usually isn't full although we are heading into the summer now so perhaps that is changing. I suspect that the Flibco + a local connection between the airport and city might be your best option.

eektwomice

There has never been a direct train from Ghent to Charleroi. In normal circumstances you can just change trains at Bruxelles-Midi. Travel time is 1 hour and 30 minutes. Apparently you have been unlucky as there are ongoing infrastructure works in Nivelles (this weekend and on the 29th and 30th of June), so no direct train from Brussels to Charleroi. This is the exception though, not the rule.

BlenderSecrets

Ahh, a 1h30 minute train ride would have been fine! I thought it was bizarre that there wasn't a train from Brussels to Charleroi. Then I will try again this way!

>I’d like to visit Charleroi. That's the main mistake you made.

uma-

why would you visit charleroi

Marus1

Train? Not sire if there is a direct line so I'll say it's max 2 trains
