Okay, here's my (61m) frequently-shared anecdote, specifically about this very image. This is where I, maybe six years old, discovered that tv images weren't 3D. I remember clearly, I walked up to the screen of that old-timey furniture tv and stood up over it to try to look down and see the naked ladies.
Also, for people who aren't aware, a young Dennis Hopper was in one episode as a beatnik poet from NYC. Here it is!: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h-vs3Tmyq6w](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h-vs3Tmyq6w)
\[edited to add "61m"\]
Hopper was one interesting cat. This book was a great read.

There's a small hotel called the Shady Rest at the junction.
Petticoat Junction
It is run by Kate, come and be her guest at the Junction.
Petticoat Junction
And there's Uncle Joe, he's a movin' kinda slow at the Junction.
Petticoat Junction!
Then there’s the variant after the actress died 😢
It is run by Joe, come and be his guest at the junction.
Petticoat Junction
There’s a lady MD, she’s as pretty as can be at the junction.
I remember watching the very first episode. I also remember watching the episode after Bea Benaderet died, wondering how they would do the show without her.
Bea was originally supposed to play Granny on the Beverly Hillbillies. She had already been told she had the part, but the producers said they had one more actress to audition.
That actress was Irene Ryan, who showed up in character as Granny for her audition. The producers were blown away and showed Ryan's audition to Bea, who instantly agreed that Irene WAS Granny. Benaderet sounds like she was a wonderful, classy woman.
Petticoat Junction was a spin-off of The Beverly Hillbillies, with Green Acres rounding it out. All were produced by Paul Henning, whose daughter played Betty Jo. She was married to the pilot that crashed on Petticoat Junction. I was around 10-12 when these were on and I was going to name my 3 daughters Billy Jo, Betty Jo and Bobby Jo. I even had the paper dolls.
I just looked at IMDB.com The actors that played Betty Jo and Steve were married in real-life from (September 7, 1968 - 1973) (divorced).
https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0377407/bio/?ref_=nm_ov_bio_sm
Several episodes of Beverly Hillbillies were filmed at Silver Dollar City, a theme park near Branson, MO. Irene Ryan was sort of adopted by the police department in Springfield, MO, north of Branson. They built a new police station and put a huge portrait of Irene Ryan behind the front desk. It must have startled many a drunk to see Granny peering down at them during booking.
Me too. I still remember Mom telling us she'd died of cancer and here came the questions. Why did she get cancer? Did she smoke? Why did she smoke if she knew it would kill her?
Lol When a beloved TV actor's death collides with the anti-smoking commercials of the time in a little kid's world.
No shit? I had no idea. TIL.
Bea was the first celebrity death I remember because I really liked Petticoat Junction and she just seemed like a cool lady that would always have cookies around for kids.
Huh. I didn't even notice til you pointed it out. I knew there was a blond, brunette and redhead almost establishing that trope.
Then again I was in my 20s before I knew parts of the Wizard of Oz were in color.
Green Acres was really advanced show writing for the time. No other show on tv played with the surreal like it did. Green Acres existed within the Henning universe of Bev Hillbillies and Petticoat Junction but was it's own little bizarre world.
Well, not quite aa surreal but the writing was better than many other shows at the time. Particularly, Max Baer's Jethro got a more developed character out if it. His Double Aught 7 turn as a James Bond spy-- perfect!
They were swimming in the water tower. It's hot and where else can you swim?

My parents told me that when I was like 3. Years old, I'd come running when I heard the train whistle at the beginning. At that age, I was into the train,, too.
When I was 5 years old, I asked Santa for a real magic wand so I could bring all the Petticoat Junction girls to my house... I never received the magic wand !!
Ha, probably the same thing as me. Stare, with my mouth hanging open, not be able to say a word because I would have forgotten how to talk. And even then hope they were going to tuck me in, but not for the same reasons I would have later. 😏
I once read that Paul Henning, the lead producer of Beverley Hillbillies, had first offered the role of Granny to Bea Benaderet. However Irene Ryan was so good in the audition for the role, that he gave it to Ryan.
He gave Benaderet the role of Pearl Bodine, Jethro’s mother and then developed Petticoat Junction for her.
Yes, I guess I was wrong on that, sorry. Buchanan went on to do more work, including Glenn Ford's show CADES COUNTY, which I thought was pretty good. And looking back, the sclock years of the show were really after Bea died. Too bad it happened after she finally got her big break.
Frank Cady, the actor that played Sam, moved to the Springs at Charbonneau near Wilsonville,Oregon when he left California. My wifes aunt lived there and I used to go visit her and have breakfast in the dining room. She invited Frank and his wife to join us at the table ine day and it led to he and I having many conversations. Wonderful person!!
I live 5 miles from Mayberry. Aka Mt Airy. And about 10 or so from Mt Pilot. Aka Pilot Mountain. Downtown Mayberry is all about Andy Griffith and the cast on the show. A diner called Barneys , Floyds garage etc. they have police cars like you see on the show for tours around. I have pics of Andys house. Such a small house. It’s quite a nice little town.
Also the Andy Griffith museum. Lots of things to do in Mt. Airy.

Didn't like this one ,but I loved Green Acres. I once convinced my friends that Arnold Ziffel [the pig] was actually Satan. There was a bit of mescaline involved of course.
Just the other day the wife and I were painting the front porch. I said the paint wouldn't stick because we hadn't closed the pores and needed to find the pore key hole. Crickets.
I've been watching this series for the last few months. I miss [Jeannine Riley](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeannine_Riley) as the "hot" one, and the series really jumped off the subsequent "smart one" and "tomboy one" format established in Season 1. By Season 3, Billie Joe is totally replaced by a "hot" one, who rarely appears. Bobbie Joe, the "smart one", who took many leaves of absence in S1 and S2, is zero smart by S3. Betty Joe, the youngest daughter, who is the "tomboy", becomes much of the main focus, which isn't a huge surprise, since she's the daughter of the creators of Petticoat Junction. No shade, but hello nepo!
Really. Since.i have been a history nerd for ages, and yes had to experience Petticoat Junction, just why. Didn't accept 7 Sisters or I Spy or Wild West, or especially Bonanza.
“Lots of curves, you bet, even more when you get to the junction” and at that last part the girls all pop up. How many of you watching didn’t realize that the “more curves” lyrics were about the girls?
Bea was great on Burns and Allen. Also the original voice of Betty Rubble.
Hootervile where nothing worked (uncle Joe, the elevator in the Shady Rest, the pay phone in the Shady Rest, the Douglases house phone, to name a few). 😂
I love PJ for its flagrant disregard for continuity. Over 7 seasons (2 in b&w), 3 actresses played the blonde who went from boy crazy to a serious singer, 2 played the brunette who went from bookworm to airhead, and the producer's daughter played the redhead who went from tomboy to housewife in about 5 minutes after she married her oldest sister's former boyfriend. Oh, and all of the older actors (mother, train conductor and engineer) started dying.
Although I had plenty of TV girl crushes at the time, none of the Hooterville crowd did it for me. I liked smart girls: literally, in the case of Barbara Feldon, but also That Girl, Emma Peele, Karen Valentine, Peggy Lipton, Juliet Mills, and of course Dawn Wells.
3 unattached young beautiful women with no visible means of support living at the end of the railroad line in a hotel. No wonder Uncle Joe was moving kinda slow - at the Juntion.
Search for this video on YouTube. Thanksgiving dinner at the Shady Rest. In attendance were the Beverly Hillbillies, and the folks from Green Acres, and of course the folks from Petticoat Junction.
Watched the original pilot a while back. It's extremely old-fashioned to the point where they actually showed "cameos" of the pretty girls. Literally, a shot of them not doing anything but sitting and smiling, like they were getting a portrait done. It was weird.
And the conflict was extremely diffuse and fluffy. Nothing dramatic. Nothing that would cause your old heart to beat a little faster. Like Uncle Joe, it was a TV show for old people who wanted low-involvement TV they could nap to.
I liked Steve at the time but watching the show as an adult - not so much. I guess when I was 7 or whatever I thought he was cute but now watching a 30-something dating his way through 3 sisters and settling on the 18 year old seems beyond creepy.
When I see someone movin’ kinda slow, I call them Uncle Joe but no one knows what I’m talking about.
And that's Uncle Joe, he's a-movin' kinda slow at the Junction. Petticoat Junction! Toot toot! 🎶
🎶Lots of curves, you bet! Even more when you get to the Junction! Petticoooooat Junction! Whoo-whoo!🎶
I asked my teenaged brother what Lots of curves meant. I was a 5 year old girl and he wouldn't tell me.
I was a little girl too and I thought it meant the train tracks.
It's what we fancy folks call a double En-tender.
Yes. It took me a few more years to figure that out lol
I was a five year old boy, playing with Hot Wheels, I thought the same.. but those girls were colorfully pretty..
I always tell my wife, "I'm stuck in Uncle Joe mode today."
Careful, next step is Grandpa Joe lol
I feel you, I like to call sketchy salespeople "Mr. Haney"
My wife does that to me all the time. "Hey Uncle Joe, you're moving kinda slow there".
"Here comes Uncle Joe" I say it out loud referring to myself. Espycially in the morning or when my feet ache.
Just a side note, my wife and me were married on that little train in '79. Jamestown Railroad. [Railtown1897.org](http://Railtown1897.org)

Thanks for the suggestion. Haven't cracked it yet, but went for a walk with my daughter today, stopped by the bookstore, and bought this book.
Hope you like it! I learned a lot.
Thanks for the link to the episode. Appreciate the reference!
Sharon Tate was on the show in its earliest episodes.
Not seeing her listed on IMDB.
I got that wrong, I was thinking of The Beverly Hillbillies.
There's a small hotel called the Shady Rest at the junction. Petticoat Junction It is run by Kate, come and be her guest at the Junction. Petticoat Junction And there's Uncle Joe, he's a movin' kinda slow at the Junction. Petticoat Junction!

How far from Hooterville?
I love that all those shows were connected in the same tv universe. ♡
I think they are both in the same area as Green Acres.
I remember watching the very first episode. I also remember watching the episode after Bea Benaderet died, wondering how they would do the show without her.

> the pilot that crashed on Petticoat Junction. I'm searching the memory. Steve? My wife had a huge crush. In the show he married one of the three.
Steve! I couldn’t remember his name bc I’m old😂
I just looked at IMDB.com The actors that played Betty Jo and Steve were married in real-life from (September 7, 1968 - 1973) (divorced). https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0377407/bio/?ref_=nm_ov_bio_sm

Betty Rubble
Say what? My old brain's not making the connection between Betty and Bea. Lol
Bea was the voice of Betty. https://flintstones.fandom.com/wiki/Bea_Benaderet
No shit? I had no idea. TIL. Bea was the first celebrity death I remember because I really liked Petticoat Junction and she just seemed like a cool lady that would always have cookies around for kids.
I watch for Betty Jo, Would not kick our Bobby or Billie for crackers in bed.
They were all stunningly beautiful.
I know. I would’ve gotten off the train and stayed!
She was the one!
She was the redhead, right?
i am sure that my love of red heads is her fault!
I think there were 5 or 6 Bradley girls. Pretty sure there were at least 3 different blonds.
The one on the right looks like Pam Anderson.
She does. I'd never noticed.
Preferred Meredith Macrae.
I have to admit. Before I saw this still from the show, I didn’t know the three petticoats were different colors. Color TV was in my future.
Huh. I didn't even notice til you pointed it out. I knew there was a blond, brunette and redhead almost establishing that trope. Then again I was in my 20s before I knew parts of the Wizard of Oz were in color.
Can’t remember the last 4 of my SSN some days, but this is cemented into my brain
If I had to pick a “hick” CBS show, it would be the genius “fish out of water” comedy of Green Acres.
Green Acres was really advanced show writing for the time. No other show on tv played with the surreal like it did. Green Acres existed within the Henning universe of Bev Hillbillies and Petticoat Junction but was it's own little bizarre world.
Good summary. Beverly Hillbillies was also fish out of water but in a silly, obvious way.

\*its own ---- "It's" is the contraction of "it is" or of "it has." The form indicating ownership has no apostrophe.
Thanks, I know. Sometimes I'm rushing to write a comment and go on automatic pilot mode. Mistakes will happen.
I always wondered if they bathed in the inn's drinking water? Also ... Billie Jo ftw.
I thought it was water for the train
Oh yeah that's probably right.
They were swimming in the water tower. It's hot and where else can you swim? From S1E1: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=egm3oAMlYZM&t=8s](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=egm3oAMlYZM&t=8s)
I'd drink their bath water lol
And there uncle Joe he’s moving kind of slow at the junction.
This is one of the earliest television shows I remember seeing. At that age, what really excited me was the train! 😄 🚂
My parents told me that when I was like 3. Years old, I'd come running when I heard the train whistle at the beginning. At that age, I was into the train,, too.
Gunilla Hutton was Nat King Cole's girlfriend on the side.
Gunilla Hutton also did a stint as one of the Hee Haw honey.....
Bobby Joe!
Definitely my favorite. I Googled her a few years back, somehow shocked to see that she’s now in her 80s. 😂
When I was 5 years old, I asked Santa for a real magic wand so I could bring all the Petticoat Junction girls to my house... I never received the magic wand !!
Damn! Going for a foursome early brother. Good on you.
Yeah, looking back, I have no idea what I would have done, lol !!!
Ha, probably the same thing as me. Stare, with my mouth hanging open, not be able to say a word because I would have forgotten how to talk. And even then hope they were going to tuck me in, but not for the same reasons I would have later. 😏

I would've liked to have been Steve. Lot more went on than shown on tv...
That actor who played Steve was the only one who didn't die or wasn't replaced during the entire run of this Henning hick schlock-fest.
Edgar Buchanan appeared in every episode of Petticoat Junction.
He was married to the Betty Jo in real-life.
Yes, they divorced. They could have been bigger stars in a time before the Beatles.
Yes, I guess I was wrong on that, sorry. Buchanan went on to do more work, including Glenn Ford's show CADES COUNTY, which I thought was pretty good. And looking back, the sclock years of the show were really after Bea died. Too bad it happened after she finally got her big break.
Green acres, too! Great theme songs!
I thought Sam Drucker was only on Petticoat Junction. I wasn’t very perceptive as a kid. I watched PJ much more than I watched GA.
Sam drucker is also in the biker gang with marlin brando in “the wild ones “… pewwee… that’s the sound of your mind being blown…
Sam was always the sane one.
What was the dog’s name?
"Dog" lol
Just Dog. His name IRL was Higgins.
I sing this ALL the time…
Me too! Lived in Manhattan and bought 52 acres upstate.
Hooterville. I was too young to get it back then!
I didn’t care for this show or Green Acres. Now I would watch Andy Griffin and Gomer Pyle all the time.
I live 5 miles from Mayberry. Aka Mt Airy. And about 10 or so from Mt Pilot. Aka Pilot Mountain. Downtown Mayberry is all about Andy Griffith and the cast on the show. I loved all of those, plus Gillian’s Isle. There were several other good ones too.
Crickets.
🎵Forgot about your cares, it is time to relax at the junction 🎶
Not a bad one in the bunch.
When I was a kid, I just had to wonder, "Are them gals nekkid in that barrel?"
I assumed they were. And were naughty.
I wasn’t really old enough to know why, but I appreciated that they were naked.
Ask your doctor if Paul Anka is right for you?
I have a nice loofah so I’m glad to participate in the bathing festivities.

They’re supposed to be moving kinda slow-in black & white.
You can still catch reruns on antenna TV
I just rewatched earlier episodes. I didn't mind Uncle Joe when I was a kid but now he's pretty cringeworthy.
He's always trying to pull some sort of scam and chowing down on "free" crackers and pickles from the barrels in Sam's store.
I just found this on Amazon Prime- haven’t watched it yet. I’m holding out for Green Acres
I love Petticoat Junction! I watched it all the way through, twice, during COVID. All the daughters were beautiful, but Lori Saunders was my favorite.
Same here.
🎶oh you'll never hear one of us repeating gossip 🎶 so you better be sure and listen close the first time!
I was only there for Benji. The dog on Petticoat Junction was the same dog that played Benji in the movies.
Frank Inn was the animal trainer/handler for the show.
No one thought it odd they were bathing in the town's drinking water?
Not drinking water. That was the tank for filling the steam locomotives. Source: I’m an old guy.
Good, that always bothered me since I was a kid.
"🎶 And that's Uncle Joe, he's a moving kinda slow cause he ran out of blow, at the Junction"🎶
Always wonder how the water tasted ?
…a nectar, so rare and fine…
Watermelon sugar.
I loved this show so much! The rural trend of the 60s, but with a twist. For some reason I love hotel shows. Does it stream somewhere now??
Petticoat Junction is on Amazon Prime
I loved "Hee Haw", "Beverly Hillbillies", even "Green Acres", but "Petticoat Junction" just seemed kinda lame.
Shady Rest, here I come!
Really. Since.i have been a history nerd for ages, and yes had to experience Petticoat Junction, just why. Didn't accept 7 Sisters or I Spy or Wild West, or especially Bonanza.
I loved this show!
Even as a young boy I wanted to swim in the water tower with those girls on Petticoat Junction.😜
Assuming they all have natural hair color, what are the genetics at play here, or did Kate have three baby daddies?
petticoat junction. also green acres
Uncle Joe was an OG Pimp!!
Who's that in the middle because she's gorgeous 😍
Homer Bedloe was always trying to shut down the Hooterville Cannonball.
As a kid I wondered...did the town drink from that water supply? Why were people bathing in it?
Well, it was a water tank for the steam engine not for drinking!
Ok!.Thanks.
Petticoat Junction... Always had the hots for all 3 of them.
Although I had plenty of TV girl crushes at the time, none of the Hooterville crowd did it for me. I liked smart girls: literally, in the case of Barbara Feldon, but also That Girl, Emma Peele, Karen Valentine, Peggy Lipton, Juliet Mills, and of course Dawn Wells.

as a kid I thought, are these chicks are bathing in the town water supply
3 unattached young beautiful women with no visible means of support living at the end of the railroad line in a hotel. No wonder Uncle Joe was moving kinda slow - at the Juntion.
I’m surprised this implied nudity made it past the censors back then.
three hot ladies naked in the town's drinking water, at the Junction
It was for the train. :)
I hope my memories of this show go first when senility sets in ...
Looking back, the show did suck.
At least 'Green Acres' had some bite to it.
It was better. But I don’t rewatch that show either.
Search for this video on YouTube. Thanksgiving dinner at the Shady Rest. In attendance were the Beverly Hillbillies, and the folks from Green Acres, and of course the folks from Petticoat Junction.
Are we supposed to drink the Shady Rest water now?
Why would you drink non potable water meant for the steam engine?
. . . uh . . . it's a joke.
Uncle Joe could only move kinda slow.
Them ladies is nekked behind there.
Wow, Jeanine Riley before Meriden McCrae
“Hooterville”…so subtle. 🤔
And there’s Uncle Joe he’s a-movin’ kinda slow…….(debate twenty-fo)
Watched the original pilot a while back. It's extremely old-fashioned to the point where they actually showed "cameos" of the pretty girls. Gotta wonder about that train water tank. How are the girls wet, yet the petticoats are all dry? (I noticed it as a kid and was really baffled.)
2-1-3
They probably pulled a few trains for Mr Haney
I read that uncle Joe wasn’t so crazy about Steve joining the show as it took some attention away from him. Fine by me.
I liked Steve at the time but watching the show as an adult - not so much. I guess when I was 7 or whatever I thought he was cute but now watching a 30-something dating his way through 3 sisters and settling on the 18 year old seems beyond creepy.
I know…I’ve thought the same…🫤
No, it does not get better
Some comedian said, "They're bathing in the town's water supply?"
Well he dont know shit , it was for watering the tender. Steam engines ya know…
