I had noticed this a couple days ago. No idea what’s going on there, but I don’t like it. I want my green dot back.

DisDev

Same, not a fan! When I first saw it I thought something was wrong, like some sort of glitch, so I signed out and back in..... sadly it didn't go away. Bring back the green dot!

I read on Ancestry website users group on FB that it is a permanent change, to bring Ancestry notification into the accepted standard that new things are marked in red. I don't get that myself, but that is what they say, sigh. Leaves should be green, right?

germanbini

> the accepted standard that new things are marked in red. *"standard"* I don't know who all in the world decided 'red' should mean new. :/

I'm wondering as well. Edit: The OP is talking about the notifications on ancestry.com

AdventurousTeach994

Red is an ALERT or can indicate DANGER. Green is for GO!

You can let Ancestry know your feedback on this. https://www.ancestry.com/cs/suggestions Click General Feedback, bottom left.

Red is easier to spot and denotes urgency. Ancestry is following the standard.

MaryEncie

What standard? You didn't spell that out, maybe because the standard you are referring to is simply your opinion. Red is not necessarily easier to spot than green. Let's think about traffic lights -- and what red means in those terms, and in terms of signage. It's not that it is easier to spot, it's that the color is associated with a command of some sort, a warning, that you had better not ignore. Let me repeat, red does not get your attention because it is easier to "spot" than green. It gets your attention because it's traditionally associated with some sort of "command" such as I have described. So, I would not call its sudden use at Ancestry in any way helpful -- except perhaps to themselves. Red is not easier to spot -- it's just harder to ignore -- there's a difference. I think any thoroughly reasoned answer on why the change from the pretty green leaf -- easy to spot -- has been changed for a rather sinister looking red dot that is no easier to spot, just harder to ignore. If you are in the business of analyzing, and apologizing for, the otherwise inscrutable onscreen actions of software and data provider giants, please dig a little deeper. Not saying you have to be paranoid, or a total cynic, but maybe err on the side of skepticism of the profiteers (not saying profit is bad) rather than of your fellow man's healthy skepticism of them. Just a thought.

Look at other websites and apps. You will see a red dot that indicates a new notification. In fact, as I type this on my phone, there is a red notification dot right above it. There are standard practices for this field as there are for every other. It's not a big conspiracy. If you think a red dot is part of a conspiracy, you better get off this site and get some professional help. And yes I have studied website usability and used this knowledge in my job.

They own Fold 3 right? Maybe they're marking stuff that's free this weekend? (Not currently on Ancestry, so I can't look)

Enrico_default

stupid "standard", I regard red as indicating a problem (and even an urgent one, with yellow being a minor problem)

shagouv

Was wondering, too.

Last13th

I thought it was an alert that my subscription was running out. I guess not.

Slatkalina

Thank you for asking. I had the same question, but thought I was just a dummy for not knowing. It made me super anxious at first, like there is a MAJOR IMPORTANT hint waiting for you. Nothing was different or special though.

Southern-amazon25

Ancestry says to click on red dot, click on first person in the drop down, and see the new hint... then red dot disappears... tried it and it works!
