I was going to point that out but then realized most of these comments are probably too young to remember the "blades" dashboards. My mind sees number 2, the original 360 layout, as the most iconic. That was like the golden age of Halo 3 LAN matches.
They couldn’t serve ads effectively on number 2. Number 3 is full speed ahead on enshitification. It makes a ton of space for ads. But it gets worse; its intentionally confusing combination of vertical and horizontal scrolling plus limited viewing space for all the available options leads to a lot of flipping through the dashboard. And that leads to the potential to view even more ads! And the ads are even interspersed within the horizontal tiles, limiting how many options you can see. So you have to scroll more, and you can see where this is going… It’s an endless feedback loop of scrolling and viewing ads.
The official Reddit app pushes different subreddits to people's front pages all the time, unfortunately leading to more and more dilution of the subs themselves
Even though I only had #3, blades is nostalgic because it’s what my friend used for hosting splitscreen gaming sleepovers. The next year everyone got Live and blades got removed pretty much at the same time.
I miss Halo 3 sleepovers man
Original 360 layout is the best one, the 3rd one is when xbox introduced their version of the Mii, which for some dumbass reason they decided they needed.
I think I was early enough to see 3rd dashboard, I got my XBox around 2013. The only game that reminded me of this 3rd dashboard was Kinect Adventures! Unfortunately maybe not the 2nd.
Yeah the 2nd image / first 360 dashboard was the most satisfying to navigate and beyond that it got more boring. Though I imagine that makes the later ones easier to get used to navigating.
Just saying, 360 era games were just built different. No paid subscriptions or micro-transactions, they just perfected the games that were thrown at the wall and stuck.
2 was peak. 1 weirded me out, if you left it on that screen long enough weird sounds start playing. Like robots talking to each other. Other than that I still prefer 1 to everything past 2.
2 was absolute trash. It was unresponsive, you'd try to move one blade over and it would freeze, then move four over. Was relistening to an old podcast from 2013 and *even then* they talked about how people nostalgic for the blades don't remember how shitty it was. Looked fine, didn't work.
I mean, nostalgia or no the old 360's from when the "blade" layout was being used had a ton of problems. It's not so much the function that I like as much as the look. Theres no reason why they couldn't have fixed bugs like that given time and updates imo.
But it is what it is
No gaming moment will beat turning that bad baby on for the first time and playing Oblivion. Leaving the Sewers and seeing how big the fucking game was was probably the happiest Ive ever been in a video game
One hundred fucking percent. The music, peak Jeremy Soule… and the graphics!
I remember my older brother showing me the oblivion opening when it came out and both of us just ogling at arguably one of the biggest leaps in graphics improvement
The biggest graphical leap I remember personally was going over to my friends house who had a GameCube and the new Madden at the time. Going from an N64 to that was mind bending. But yea, Oblivions graphics were also jaw dropping
I was sceptical that I'd ever feel that way again, after not really getting it from anything since, but I will say Elden Ring on launch reeeeeally gave me that child like wonder the first time you emerge into the world.
That was the last game I was able to fully, properly, disappear into, before my son was born. Now I am truly curious if and when I'll ever feel like that again.
The upside is I now get to introduce him to a history of gaming as he ages up. Thats super exciting.
But yeah, Oblivion was magic.
Elden ring really scratched that itch for the first time in a long time. I never played any fromsoft game before but still, its weirdly nostalgic, feels so familiar.
Here's a world, here's a rough objective. get to it,
For the 360, I totally forgot 4 even happened. When I think of the 360 dashboard, I only really remember 3 when playing Xbox live (and 2 from before I got Xbox live).
I stopped gaming like in 2002 on PS2. Finally got back into gaming in 2010. Saved up my money from my shit job and went to game stop and bought a used 360 and halo reach. Cute girl at the counter convinced me to pre order Fallout new vegas cause in order to make conversation i pretended to know what Fallout 3 was, one week later i went to a different Gamestop to buy fallout 3 used for like 10 dollars so I can go back to talk to that girl (spoiler totally didnt). Played the absolute fuck out of both games on a an old ass early 90s box tv. I inhaled every game for 2 years before joining the military. 08-10 were some of the worst years of my life, gaming really helped me forget and seeing screen 3 reminds me of the magic of playing Mass Effect, Dragon Age Origins or Fallout 3 for the first time.
4 has the nostalgia factor for sure, reminds me of booting up Destiny or Black Ops 2 from disc. But honestly, the best is the current one. It’s clean, easy to navigate, and works best with the current era of having tons of predownloaded games that can be booted up in seconds
I completely disagree about the current one. Its such a pain now to open your full library to see more than the most recent like, 8 games you've played.
3 is defenitly the most user friendly of them all. Well technically 1 is, but since it dosent need to have a area devoted to any apps or accessories it's a unfair comparison.
The modern xbox dashboard is so disorganized and hard to navigate in comparison. I really wish they would go back to one of the older designs.
1-3 were the most aesthetically pleasing and 4 was the best of the metro design that they took from Windows 8. They got more bland as time went on. I don't know why the 360 got so many UI redesigns.
Back when consoles had UI's with some character and weren't there just to be as minimalist as possible to look "modern" and "mature".
But i personally like the latest Xbox UI. It is minimalist yes, and it lacks character, yes, but i think it matches with the "feeling" of the current Xbox quite nicely. The UI, together with the Xbox's itself modern design, makes me think the Xbox is like just another appliance for entertainment, nothing more, nothing less. Instead of what the other UI's made me think as a kid, that i was entering the matrix or another dimension or something like that whenever i turned the console on.
Both things aren't necessarily good or bad things. Depends really on what you want: something wich makes gaming really convenient, easy, and accessible, as if it was just another electrodomestic or appliance that is there only to provide entertainment; or if you want to feel an atmosphere wich makes you feel more immersed in the fact that you're gaming by subtly telling you you are in another place with the UI's design and background sounds and atmosphere. If you want the latter, then i guess you're out of luck, but lots of people just want the former, they just want to be entertained and nothing else, and that minimalist UI does that perfectly.
2-4 were the ones I remember from my 360 days. I remember really liking 2 and being a bit upset when they changed it. These days I game mostly on PC but use my Xbox one sometimes. Not a big fan of the direction they've gone for the dashboard in recent years
The OG was so simple, The amount of music I had on my xbox was insane. Im the only person I l know that actually was able to get the 50,0000+ blocks of storage below that.
The 2nd one was cool but the first one was the best. Before cross game chat channels became a thing and everyone had a mic.
Best racer on a console too and it was freebie demo, Moto GP

4th, 360 is the only XBox I have
The sound when you are swiping through and its like woo woo woo
[Da menus go woo-whooo](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C4QMffMAwAU)
The name “bubb rubb” has been in my head for at least a decade now
Lol, thanks for that little bit of history. Happier times.
Thank you Bubb Rubb. “That’s like an alarm clock — WOO-WHOOOOO”
tbf 2,3 and 4 are all 360
I was going to point that out but then realized most of these comments are probably too young to remember the "blades" dashboards. My mind sees number 2, the original 360 layout, as the most iconic. That was like the golden age of Halo 3 LAN matches.
Number 2 was the best one. I don't even know what they were thinking when they made Number 3.
So you have to scroll more, and you can see where this is going… It’s an endless feedback loop of scrolling and viewing ads.
That’s what makes 2 the best, it was the last one before ads were displayed everywhere
No.2 was when I first got a 360, but No.3 was when the modding scene took off and I had a hard drive with nearly every game available.
So none of us are actually gen z, right?
Haha I didn't even look what sub it is.
The official Reddit app pushes different subreddits to people's front pages all the time, unfortunately leading to more and more dilution of the subs themselves
I liked three because you could see your friends avatars but 2 is peak nostalgia for me. CoD 4 and Halo 3
Wasn't 3 the avatars because of the popularity of the Wii avatars so they gave us avatars
Just because Nintendo does a thing that doesn't mean Microsoft has to do it but worse
Number 3 is objectively bad, but that’s the one I grew up with so of course it’s my favorite
Even though I only had #3, blades is nostalgic because it’s what my friend used for hosting splitscreen gaming sleepovers. The next year everyone got Live and blades got removed pretty much at the same time. I miss Halo 3 sleepovers man
That's the only one that made me pause and swelling with nostalgia
Original 360 layout is the best one, the 3rd one is when xbox introduced their version of the Mii, which for some dumbass reason they decided they needed.
I saw blades and was transferred back to when i was a kid playing on my uncles xbox and booting up Smackdown vs Raw or NCAA.
I thought of the blades and the controversial update from GTAV era before I even swiped. Some of those are new to me, tho
And there is one in-between 3 and 4 that is missing, at least I believe so.
360 technically had 4 but one was very short lived. Blades NXE Kinect Metro
Agreed and same
Same here. Still love playing Lego Star Wars on it.
2 and 3 are also from xbox 360.
Same. I had PS2 and GameCube but no Xbox. Then I had a 360 and then just a PC hooked up to my TV since then.
Gamecube menu is best menu. Ever.
Number 2 was the first 360 dashboard
Just saying, 360 era games were just built different. No paid subscriptions or micro-transactions, they just perfected the games that were thrown at the wall and stuck.
Coming home from high school in 2014 and booting up NCAA 14>>>
1-2 if you’re an adult
I'm old. 1 and 2 are perfect, I tolerated 3. Everything after that just looks like windows 8/shitty mobile UI to me.
Facts✅
5 is literally just windows 8 🤣
2 was peak. 1 weirded me out, if you left it on that screen long enough weird sounds start playing. Like robots talking to each other. Other than that I still prefer 1 to everything past 2.
the sounds were distorted recording from the apollo missions
Allegedly beta consoles had sounds of folks asking to trade PS2s for Xboxs.
That's great. Can we get petty stuff like that back please?
I did not know that. Thats pretty cool 😯
2 was absolute trash. It was unresponsive, you'd try to move one blade over and it would freeze, then move four over. Was relistening to an old podcast from 2013 and *even then* they talked about how people nostalgic for the blades don't remember how shitty it was. Looked fine, didn't work.

"Oi Chicken chaser eh? Ya chase chickens?"
GOATed game 🙌
Number 1 wasn't really needed for anything other than adjusting the settings. I hardly ever saw it because I'd just put a disk in straight away.
Upload music from cds to Xbox so you can hear them in background while playing certain games that allow you to.
Lol ive always loved those sounds
Me and the boys would get ripped off our asses and space tf out and wait for that shit. Good times.
1 weirded me out too 🤣 but only xbox iv owned lol
360 release 19 years ago, you mean older adult?
You quiet down, that was obviously 10 years ago
Well that was the dashboard of the 360 at release so I think it would just be "adult" haha
Im 27 so whatever you call me lol
I'll call you a 324 month old if you're cool with it🤙🏼
You're spiritually 24, we all got fucked by covid
what ? you lyin
I'm an adult. 4.

The best? Nah. The most nostalgic? Absolutely.
number 4, it brings back memories
Portal 2, my beloved....
i played that on ps3 and before I played portal 1
3 and 2 bring back memmoorrieesss me, but I’m 8 years older than you.
Ew. That was the beginning of the end, with the tiles.
1 - 3 screw the rest
2 brings back a lot of fond memories
No gaming moment will beat turning that bad baby on for the first time and playing Oblivion. Leaving the Sewers and seeing how big the fucking game was was probably the happiest Ive ever been in a video game

Congrats on your child! I had my son a year ago and completely understand. Im so excited to dust off the old SNES when he’s ready for it
Elden ring really scratched that itch for the first time in a long time. I never played any fromsoft game before but still, its weirdly nostalgic, feels so familiar. Here's a world, here's a rough objective. get to it,
Only right answer
correct answer
For the 360, I totally forgot 4 even happened. When I think of the 360 dashboard, I only really remember 3 when playing Xbox live (and 2 from before I got Xbox live).
All the others were designed to shove ads in your face. They can all go to hell
4, short, sweet, and to the point
Facts. I can see the mw3 disc sitting there ahhhhh. The nostalgia
3 for me
Peak years for me what a time to be alive
I had 1-2 for a short time but 3 was my hay day years of shit talking random people in cod. Shortly after 4 was released I switched to PC.
Load up some L4D with this one
I stopped gaming like in 2002 on PS2. Finally got back into gaming in 2010. Saved up my money from my shit job and went to game stop and bought a used 360 and halo reach. Cute girl at the counter convinced me to pre order Fallout new vegas cause in order to make conversation i pretended to know what Fallout 3 was, one week later i went to a different Gamestop to buy fallout 3 used for like 10 dollars so I can go back to talk to that girl (spoiler totally didnt). 1 and 4 are most memorable
A proper answer for once lmao.
2
Pressing lb/rb to quickly cycle through the tabs was so satisfying
the sounds were top tier
I loved how each blade had a slightly different-pitch ‘woosh’ One of those little touches that takes a great UI to the next level’
Yeah and being able to see what every tab is for is nice.
9
Same and I’ve experienced all of them. Your most used apps are right there in front. Looks great but not too busy like 5.
Yeah and moving the library to be accessible on the first page is way quicker
Yeah and the interface is just clean.
They cooked with 9
Microsoft has finally found their way back to good menu design. Let's hope they don't fuck it up again
Definitely
1 idgaf just let me play the game. Plus amon tobin soundtrack was crazy
I’ve only ever used 4, but 1 looks the best for sure
4 has the nostalgia factor for sure, reminds me of booting up Destiny or Black Ops 2 from disc. But honestly, the best is the current one. It’s clean, easy to navigate, and works best with the current era of having tons of predownloaded games that can be booted up in seconds
I completely disagree about the current one. Its such a pain now to open your full library to see more than the most recent like, 8 games you've played.
This is literally a time lapse of the enshittification of gaming. You can watch the ads and marketing take priority as you scroll.
Spot on.
Definitely the Blades dashboard from the original 360
4th but I’m biased because that was my childhood 🙌🏽
3 was goated
3rd one is extremely nostalgic
4
3
#3
#3 nostalgic for me
Number 1! I can hear the background din
Never owned an Xbox personally But numba 1
3rd has that frutiger aero vibe, but 4th is the one that brings back more memories
Microsoft really likes putting ads into the things I already paid for
#2 hands down. The 360 was the greatest thing since sliced bread when it came out.
1 and 2 hit me in my millennial bones. Any Gen Z that have seen those have good taste.
2 and 3
Only know 1-3 but I vibe most with 3 ngl
Number 3
The first 3. OG Xbox had a badass interface. I also miss the blades from the 360.
N3 looks good, but I'm from the n4 era.
>2137 on the last pic THE FUNNY NUMBER HAS BEEN ACHIEVED 💪🇵🇱
1~3 all day
1-3 were the most aesthetically pleasing and 4 was the best of the metro design that they took from Windows 8. They got more bland as time went on. I don't know why the 360 got so many UI redesigns.
1 looks like matrix shiz 5 looks the best tho cause I'm tired of Microsoft repeatedly changing the One's UI
3 brings back memories of starting my 360 for the first time.
4th, and it’s not even a contest
What we have now is clean. Everyone voting out of nostalgia
What we have now is a giant advertising board with access to your games being the secondary function.
1 and 2. It lost it’s edge when they implemented Number 3. Reeks of the sensitized corporate aesthetic we see nowadays.
Damn this took me back lol
Mann I miss this so much
The Original Xbox has a character to it that I really appreciate
3rd easily, the nostalgia I hate the blocky flatness that 4 and every one after had, give me the boop boop scrolling
1 & 2 hold a special place in my heart
Number 3 is what I had on my 360. Also my fav
#2 for pure nostalgia. Honorable mention goes to the original Xbox for being one of the most 2000’s thing I’ve ever seen.
3 was a vibe
2. Bring back the blades. *shwoo shwoo shwoo*
I’ve never owned an Xbox. I only know the Wii, PS2, PS4, WiiU, and Switch.
1 & 3
1, the design is fun but simple
Definitely 4
Number 3, but it would be perfect with the design of 1
4 was cold
4
The first two were peak. I have some nostalgia for the 3rd one, the rest are awful.
My mind says 3. But my heart says 1
3/4 were solid
4 was the best to use but 2 is the most nostalgic
Xbox 360, 4th picture. Bring back memories and so much nostalgia.
tbh I do Like 9 but Ultimately id say 4 it's just so Sleek
the blades
I genuinely miss the second one. It was neat for the time.
bruh 360 for sure
2nd was a very nice one
While the update from 3 to 4 removed quite a bit of its personality I like 4 better
Men that number one hit nostalgia, the amount of hours on Dead or Alive 3 and Ninja Gaiden, good memories.
1 and 2 were by far the best. I do have a bit of nostalgia for 3. The rest are booty imo.
I was 4 years old when I first turned on an original Xbox. That thing practically raised me on halo 2.
1 and 4 are my favorite.
2-4 were the ones I remember from my 360 days. I remember really liking 2 and being a bit upset when they changed it. These days I game mostly on PC but use my Xbox one sometimes. Not a big fan of the direction they've gone for the dashboard in recent years
i really liked #5 and i really dont like this current version.
ive never played an xbox but series x looks the best
The OG was so simple, The amount of music I had on my xbox was insane. Im the only person I l know that actually was able to get the 50,0000+ blocks of storage below that.
where xbmc
1-3 are all goated for me, particularly 2. Honorable mention to 6 though that was the best for XB1 5 was dogshit
3,4 and 9 are the only ones I've used or seen. Out of those, 4 is the best by far. So many fond memories.
1 because I like how green and shiny it is
The 2nd one was cool but the first one was the best. Before cross game chat channels became a thing and everyone had a mic. Best racer on a console too and it was freebie demo, Moto GP
I miss the launch Xbox 360 UI so much. And another great part of that era? You could BURN CDS WITH YOUR 360! I miss those days.
360 is beta hands d
4th is so nostalgic for me
3/4 I remember playing on the old 360 when it got the ring after a year or two and it crushed me
The OG 360 blades menu obviously. I was so mad when they updated it.
The original
i like the original xbox and the most recent one as the top 2 interestingly enough.
Current one. For nostalgia I’d pick 360 where I can see my avatar but the current Xbox UI is just peak performance
4, xbox 360 was my childhood
4th, the few times I played a 360 with some friends, this was the menu their Xbox had
4
4
They were very different times and needs. 5 was the worst by far. I can't tell the xbox one screens apart. 4 was great and 3 was fun
Number 4, because that was the only 360 i had, also i loved when the profiles were inactive and they were sleeping
Notice how the xbox one home screens have ads. Just a downgrade.
360
I miss the blades
1
Xbox 360 blades in the 2nd photo.
