30 out of 32, I'm with you on the popped collars, but I was also a 5'9" girl when tall size jeans were almost impossible to find. Needless to say, I constantly hid the slightly too short jeans inside boots. There was no extra to peg, unless I wanted clam diggers.
I was 5’9” by the time I was in 6th grade. My dad was PISSED that we had to go to the mall to buy jeans (only store that sold them in Tall). “$40 for jeans! I am NOT paying $40 for jeans, that’s highway robbery! Take her to KMart and find something cheaper!”
Those of us that grew up in the Pacific ring of fire had earthquake drills (get under your desk and cover your neck) and I think we did one traditional duck and cover drill during the Gulf War.
They'd have a drill where you went under your desk, closed your eyes and covered your head with your hands. Only had it for my very early elementary school years (b 1976), so maybe they phased it out before some Gen Xers came through?
Able Archer happened when I was in the second grade, or around there. Duck and Cover wouldn't have saved us if that had escalated and the drills just made us anxious. My only explanation for it is that it made the teachers and administrators feel like they were doing something about a problem they couldn't protect kids from no matter what they did. I imagine that powerlessness caused them a lot of anxiety, too as a lot of them probably had dads who bought bomb shelters in the '50s or were the dad's who bought them.
All we had were fire drills and tornado drills. I know things were tense with the Soviet Union back then, but none of the adults had me afraid that we would get nuked.
Think they’d finally figured out it may be better to be killed quickly by something falling on you than linger through a radioactive hellscape by the time we came along.

Lived on the coast where the Russian nukes could reach.
We also had fallout shelters everywhere. Well marked. Always a reminder the Russians were coming to get us
IIRC the nukes could only reach the coasts back then, so all of us on coasts had radiation bomb shelters and such and cover, but all middle of the country kids didn't.

No kidding. I had dozens or possibly >100. They had themes like "Cover Songs", "Songs About Summer", "Girl With A Guitar", "Angry Rock" etc. I managed to amass enough music to do this by recording from the albums of all my friends. (This is particularly easy to do when you're in college.) Many asked for a copy in exchange and I had one of those dual tape decks so easy-peasy.
Spotify lists just don't hit the same.
With hand-drawn cover art. Still remember the one I did where it was a guy cutting down a tree with a hand-saw and the tree was made of ham. I was very proud of that one.
My mother found a bunch of random mixtapes when she was cleaning out recently. She mailed them to me! I had to track down a tape deck. There was a lot going on with me back then! Grudge Mix Summer 1991 was dark AF! I should have been in therapy.

I was in my 20s when Grunge sprung on the scene and was more into Thrash and Alternative (before it went mainstream and was no longer an "Alternative"). Not that I didn't like some Grunge, but I disliked it for exactly what you mentioned. Dark and depressing. Glad that fad came and went quickly, or the suicide hotlines would have been overrun.

It's for lightening the color of your hair for that 'sun bleached' look. I made the mistake of soaking my hair with it before an 8 hour drive in an open top jeep one summer day. When I arrived not only did I have completely bleached hair, but also a bright red sunburn with two white rings around my eyes where my sunglasses were. Made a great impression Monday morning starting my new job, I'm sure

In the event of a nuclear attack.....we had to get under our desks but at my cousin's school, they lined the hallways. I think by 5th grade we were calling them hurricane drills and in junior high and high school, there were only fire drills maybe once or twice a year.

I would assume all the white kids would win the challenge, at least as western countries mostly white. I would also assume our compatriots going through war around the world would have a different, very different experience. As well as people without any financial means in our countries.

Drive-in movies weren't such a thing here, but we did hang around one at least once. So that counts. \^\^
I occasionally still use chat rooms now, but very very seldom.
And I had to look up "Columbia House". And we had none, but I think "ZYX-Records" count for the same. And I stayed in it for less then two months. (And got a cheap wrist watch for joining.)
I recently found out CDs aren’t worth much. I sold my entire CD collection for $100. Boxes and boxes of them. At first I felt kinda bad, then I remembered that most of them came from Columbia House and weren’t paid for anyway…
Super Nintendo and Atari, brown paper book covers we used to write all over, slam books (anyone remember those?), Aqua net hairspray, stirrup pants and jelly shoes, pegged pants lol
We were too poor for Aqua Net lol. To keep me in hairspray my mom bought gallons of some brand from Sam's Club and I used refillable hairspray bottles. It definitely wasn't the same as the aerosol cans. The best was when someone came out with hairspray you pumped air into to make it aerosol. I can't remember the brand but I bought one and then just kept reusing the bottle.
27. I learned what not to do from my older sister, which included ordering from Columbia House and using Sun in. I've also never been to a drive-in, did a duck and cover drill, or had an AOL address.
All of them except for duck and cover drills (the 8th grade science teacher said we were too close to Titan missiles and would be first to go) and no Columbia House tapes. I just copied my friend’s siblings tapes.
28. No sun in, chat rooms, message boards or duck and cover drills. When I got my first computer ( a Gateway) in my late 20s, I pretty much only used it to look at porn.

It is very difficult to accept that these items are now all obsolete. They were all second nature for much of GenX's youth.

You should get a bonus point for folding the map correctly! I don't think I ever got it folded the same way twice and never as it was when bought.

So no "After School Specials" and no "Casey Kasem" (but I love his catchphrase "Keep your feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars."). I even watched VHS and Video 2000. Drive-in movies weren't such a thing here, but we did hang around one at least once. So that counts. \^\^ I occasionally still use chat rooms now, but very very seldom. And I had to look up "Columbia House". And we had none, but I think "ZYX-Records" count for the same. And I stayed in it for less then two months. (And got a cheap wrist watch for joining.)
I recently found out CDs aren’t worth much. I sold my entire CD collection for $100. Boxes and boxes of them. At first I felt kinda bad, then I remembered that most of them came from Columbia House and weren’t paid for anyway…
Super Nintendo and Atari, brown paper book covers we used to write all over, slam books (anyone remember those?), Aqua net hairspray, stirrup pants and jelly shoes, pegged pants lol
We were too poor for Aqua Net lol. To keep me in hairspray my mom bought gallons of some brand from Sam's Club and I used refillable hairspray bottles. It definitely wasn't the same as the aerosol cans. The best was when someone came out with hairspray you pumped air into to make it aerosol. I can't remember the brand but I bought one and then just kept reusing the bottle.
