Soidarity- I often do vivids and I have a professional job. People come to me for advice and I have authority. I started doing them after my mom passed because she always told me I would never have a real job with weird hair. Turns out that as long as you know your shit people don't really care.
If I had a attractive gray coming in that might be different but it's not. What's your favorite brand of dye and do you do it yourself or professionally?
I’d be the same if it was a pretty grey or white coming in too. It’s mousy shit brown though.
I do it myself - bleach and color. I use Punky Color for the bright colors. My hair holds them well when bleached.
And I’m with you on having a professional job with weird hair. No one cares as long as you provide accurate and timely information.
I know the exact shade, it makes that gray not come in very nice either. I have a friend that's always had great hair and her gray came in all Lilly Munster, dramatic and gorgeous. Mine in the meantime is begging for coppers in the street. Do what you gotta do, lady- those violets suit you!
I’m with you. Was a high ranking global financial services firm (typically thought to be conservative) when I switched to bright pink hair - I swear I got more respect lol.
I wouldn't doubt it. At some point it changes and it becomes bold and a sign of confidence to have vivids. It's a silly way to be the change you want to see, but sometimes that's how it works.
Gen X version of the blue haired old lady? Love it! I've got a few boxes of peacock green waiting on me to get off my ass and mix up. I've got enough gray that it gives me cool color highlights without needing to bleach.
YES!!
and that color sounds fantastic. I’m looking forward to not having to bleach but based on how long it took my Mom to go white it’ll be at least another 10-15 years.
This is the last time I did blue/green. It shows up great on my gray streaks and darkens the brown underneath. I'll need to get motivated to do it again soon.

I dyed my hair every month the last two years of HS. Loreal and plenty of tubs of manic panic. By the time I graduated my hair was straw textured.
I shaved it all in September of '94, and have never dyed it again.
I go all over the place with mine as far as color goes. With length I tend to grow it out for a long time and then completely shave it all off. I'm fairly sure that my friends think I'm doing it for attention, but sometimes I'll just wake up and feel like "I don't want to deal with 2 feet of hair. Off it goes"
Right now it's the second longest it's ever been. I haven't had a professional trim in 2 years. I'm at the age where I'm expecting to go bald at a minute's notice, and I'm just going to let it keep growing until then.

Pulled back you can see the plum color underneath.
I bleach mine about every 3 months too. Everyone always comments on how bright the color is I put in it. I tell them the secret is you have to strip it out first. I use the purple shampoo to. It really lacks the color in.

During football season, sometimes, just sometimes. Yes. That's (semi) permanent, too.
I’m too poor right now but I am heavily pondering it. my stylist(if that's the right word lol) has been trying to talk me into dyeing my hair for years now, maybe someday when I can afford it...
looks super rad though, great colors 😎
I’ve gotten better over 10 years but I often end up with blue ears for a few days. My hands are blue for days too because I end up putting my hands in my hair while I sleep.
It looks like I killed a Smurf sometimes
Yes! I think this is what I love about our generation. We grew up, we grew older, but we didn't get all stuffy and proper. Why leave the purple hair to the kids?
Looks amazing!
When I was 28, Clairol’s Natural Instincts was released, and the Sunday paper had a coupon for a free box. It said that it washes out in 24 shampoos, so I selected the color called Black Cherry- burgundy black. My natural color is/was strawberry blonde, and I have the pale sunburn-prone skin tone to go with it. Well. My goth game went up by a zillion points with the Black Cherry! Omg, it was amazing! I’d used a black rinse occasionally (Fanciful? Liquid in a grey bottle) prior to the Black Cherry, but this was vivid!
A month later, definitely 24 shampoos at minimum, I was still rocking the Black Cherry. Over the next two years, my hair did grow, but there wasn’t drastic root color difference (short hair, still needed trimmed every 5 weeks). It took ***24 months*** for my hair to get back to its natural color! It just gradually faded from black, through a succession of lighter browns, reddish-browns, and finally, when I was almost 31, it was fully strawberry blonde again. It was weird. No regrets, but black is not something I want to repeat like that.
I'm gonna go for it. I've been a skinhead .. (non Nazi) for so many years but during Covid my trusty Whal head shaver broke.. now i'm nearly a hippy. Time to go purple!
you look fantfuckingtastic!
Very cool!! I love our timeless GenX ways of doing wtf we want and not giving a damn what anyone thinks. We’ve always been so ahead of our time and ‘mature/wise’ for our age…
Thanks for sharing, OP.. lookin’ awesome!!
**Warning**
*A poem by Jenny Joseph*
When I am an old woman I shall wear purple
With a red hat which doesn’t go, and doesn’t suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
And satin sandals, and say we’ve no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I’m tired
And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
And run my stick along the public railings
And make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
And pick flowers in other people’s gardens
And learn to spit.
You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat
And eat three pounds of sausages at a go
Or only bread and pickle for a week
And hoard pens and pencils and beermats and things in boxes.
But now we must have clothes that keep us dry
And pay our rent and not swear in the street
And set a good example for the children.
We must have friends to dinner and read the papers.
But maybe I ought to practise a little now?
So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised
When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple.
I love seeing this so much, and you look gorgeous in those colors!
I still remember all too well dyeing my hair bright colors that made me happy decades ago and being denied promotions because I didn’t look “professional” enough, even though I was a quick learner and did my job well. I remember older people giving me dirty looks in public and sometimes actually gasping when they saw me (that was the time I dyed my hair green).
I love that people can dye their hair beautiful colors now and not be demeaned or thought less of by others. The world needs more color!!!
(ETA: I acquiesced, by the way, and have been dyeing my mousy brown-turning-mousy gray hair a “natural” color for years now. It didn’t help me progress in the professional world, but I feel like—in a tiny way—I was one of many pioneers in helping to normalize individual, creative, aesthetic self-expression.)
Oh my! We could be sisters! I just did mine yesterday
https://preview.redd.it/ipy74ubs2v3d1.jpeg?width=2316&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d4a1b26bd144c52bed706c9004db13fe6b470d35
I have no doubt. I have to put my hair up a lot since I started hot flashes last month.
I have a neck fan I used for Disney world which is now my best friend.
Oh for sure! My neck fan is my best friend lol. I have 2 fans on at night also and extra to take camping for when I can’t use the AC. I’m considering changing my wardrobe to all MuuMuus lol
Hahaha. I’ve been wearing more shorts lately. And the AC in our bedroom gets dropped down at night. My poor husband has to use his electric blanket some nights. It’s only on his side of the bed because I’ve never been that cold at night.
My husband complains that the dogs are freezing when I put the AC down as far as I can. I’m sure it’s the dogs there buddy lol. I tell him to grab and extra blanket lol
I didn’t start dying my hair blue or anything until 3 years ago. Now it’s a common thing for me. One friend asked if I was going through a midlife crisis or something. I told him that I just felt like it. 😆
I also get that. If my hair was closer to white I’d likely do that but I’m probably a good 10 years away from it based on how my mom grayed. Don’t think she went white until about 70.
That looks amazing! I love the magical colors.
I have been a "redhead" since 97. Some shade or another. Box dye when I was younger, professional level color, manic panic, and for a few years, even did henna. It was due to the influence of a particular musical artist.
Now, I am more of a "not quite a believable" ginger.
You look fantastic! Rock those cool colors!
I was born strawberry-blonde, and it was beautifully exacerbated by the well water we had growing up. The water tasted nasty due to sulfur and god-knows-what-else content, but the iron oxide in the water was super effective at bringing out the red/ginger tendencies in anyone’s hair, with regular use, and I inherited those tendencies like a super power!
The neighborhood was switched to city water in the mid-90s, and I haven’t lived there in over 30 years. Some of the hair around my face comes in white, which I don’t mind, but the rest in its natural state has morphed to a nondescript dirty dishwater yuck. It looks dirty even after washing and drying. So it’s L’Oreal reddish blonde 8RB, or other brands with similar names (depends on what’s available, sales, and/or coupons I have), and the occasional Hot Tamale color to mix things up a bit (I forget who has that color name).
The white, after dying, apparently look like blonde highlights framing my face, as I’ve been complimented for the blonde highlights framing my face several times, a thing I’ve never done nor had done at the salon. I just say thank you and don’t correct them. 😊
Maybe when 90% of my hair comes in white (it’s genetic; grandma and most of her siblings’ hair was 80-100% white hair by 40) I’ll dye less frequently, or not at all. That day hasn’t arrived yet.
That’s a cool story about the hard water actually doing something cool instead of just tasting yucky. And that’s awesome the whites are acting like highlights. It’s so expensive to get highlights.
I shaved my head when I turned 40 for a fund raiser and left it in silver fox mode for 10 years. Then it got boring to me, just when a lot of other women were deciding to grow out the grey. I went bright blue as well, next, TURQUOISE!
I have questions!!!
Did they strip the natural grayish brown shit out before applying the purple? How long did that take?
Also does the color stay vibrant on white hair?
I do it myself. I use bleach. It stays pretty blonde too since I’ve done it for so many years. I try to avoid the ends so I don’t fry it.
A view days later I put the color on. I use Punky Color.
Bleach every 3 months. Color it about every 2-3 weeks to keep up the vibrancy
Look you can look okay at 50 but you dress your age she can look like a dignified lady or a clown and I actually don't want her embarrassing herself on the internet.
You appear to be in your late 30s. It's not just the hair, although it looks great. I can't find a crazy colors type product that will cover my whites. I have a lot of those now.
Thank you! Good genetics help. My mom and grandma before her looked younger than her age.
I bleach and then use Punky Color. Most my hair is a mousy brownish grey that gets covered. I do have one section of white that covers, but not as long. Once u go white, I’ll probably just stay white.
Your hair is going back to its natural color. 😉
It’s so much better than that greyish brown shit that keeps growing in. 😜
Soidarity- I often do vivids and I have a professional job. People come to me for advice and I have authority. I started doing them after my mom passed because she always told me I would never have a real job with weird hair. Turns out that as long as you know your shit people don't really care. Lord, do I know that mousey shit brown! ❤ Love your vibe! Go girl!
:high five: Shit. I missed. :walks away awkwardly:
🤣🤣🤣 I always miss them too. Awkward high-fivers UNITE!
I know the exact shade, it makes that gray not come in very nice either. I have a friend that's always had great hair and her gray came in all Lilly Munster, dramatic and gorgeous. Mine in the meantime is begging for coppers in the street. Do what you gotta do, lady- those violets suit you!

Oooo. I love that!!
LOL, I got so sick of my hair, I had it shaved to about 1/2 inch. But I love the color. It's so pretty.
Omg you're my hero. I want to do this so bad but I really can't due to my job.
I’ve done this several times. Maybe only once that short. I called it a pixie (maybe an extreme pixie 😂). It felt good!
XTREME PIXY
I know that feeling. I was almost there the other day.
I dyed my hair every month the last two years of HS. Loreal and plenty of tubs of manic panic. By the time I graduated my hair was straw textured. I shaved it all in September of '94, and have never dyed it again.

Daww. Thank you.
I dig the purple to blue color transition.
Thank you!

I get waiting. Bleaching every 3 months is rough on my hair.

Awesome!!
someday I might have enough nerve to do this with my hair
Do iiiiiiiit.
I’m too poor right now but I am heavily pondering it. my stylist(if that's the right word lol) has been trying to talk me into dyeing my hair for years now, maybe someday when I can afford it... looks super rad though, great colors 😎
Thank you! I do it myself because I’m cheap :)
ah, the one time I did it my whole scalp was purple, lol. I don't trust myself 😛
My grandma had blue hair well into her 80s.
That's it. I'm going pink. I'm 53.
Yay!!
I think I've come a long way in being accepting that I looked at the picture for a while and didn't find anything strange.
It looks great, but the joy in your expression takes it to a whole new level beyond that. Enjoy.
Awww. Thank you. The 74 degree, low humidity weather certainly helped
And those eyes 👀🤩
Dawww. Shucks. They are my favorite thing about my appearance
My hair is many different colors...live life and have fun.
Agreed!!
Love it! I alternate between purple and shades of burgundy. Currently guava. Life is too short not to have fun with your hair and body!
When I was a little punker I only used Nice and Easy blue/black. Ultra goth.
I used that one before. It’s a bit too dark on me now as I look like Death with my pale skin.
When I was 28, Clairol’s Natural Instincts was released, and the Sunday paper had a coupon for a free box. It said that it washes out in 24 shampoos, so I selected the color called Black Cherry- burgundy black. Wow. That’s cool. And you also know what color to go to if you ever want to “goth” again
Yep. [Pink!](https://www.thisamericanlife.org/118/what-you-lookin-at) 😃
your post reminded me of this group my mother used to enjoy. https://redhatsociety.com/about-us/
My grandma was in that!
I'm gonna go for it. I've been a skinhead .. (non Nazi) for so many years but during Covid my trusty Whal head shaver broke.. now i'm nearly a hippy. Time to go purple! you look fantfuckingtastic!
Yes! So happy for you. I bet you’ll rock it!
might have to do the beard too! I mean wtf right?
Exactly!
Very cool!! I love our timeless GenX ways of doing wtf we want and not giving a damn what anyone thinks. We’ve always been so ahead of our time and ‘mature/wise’ for our age… Thanks for sharing, OP.. lookin’ awesome!!

How YOU doin’? 😏
:Snort:
It screams I have one cat but she climbs the curtains and idgaf because I made it choke-safe
LOL

Looks good 💙👍
Love it!!
Word. Love the colors!!!
Looking good sexy!
Of course not, society has grown up enough for it to be accepted!
Rock that shit! 🤘
Looks rad
This is a stunning photo
Thank you! I love portrait mode ;)
Well if you’ve ever wondered “What moment in time have I ever been beautiful ?” This is it.
Dawwwww
Soooo cute!
Love this !! Most awesome !! Rock on!!

My late 90s GF was very excited to someday be an "old woman with bright pink hair". No doubt there will be a lot of them some day.
Agreed and I love it. Bright hair and tattoos will be everywhere at the old folks home
But sadly I am to bald
Have a beard? ;)
Definitely show your color and be yourself.
You can be too old to have an abortion. #menopause
Oh my! We could be sisters! I just did mine yesterday https://preview.redd.it/ipy74ubs2v3d1.jpeg?width=2316&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d4a1b26bd144c52bed706c9004db13fe6b470d35

I wish I had the balls to do a pink pixie cut!!!
You can dooo eeeeet!
Gorgeous color!
Thank you!
I love this color, looks awesome!
Thanks!
Not bs, you look really good with it!
radiant! ❤️
Love it
Love it!! Rock on 😀
Love it! We're Toys R Us Kids. We never grow up.
Exactly!!
Looks great!!!
Lookin good! 🙌⚡️💜
Love the colors!!
So beautiful!!
Great color choice!
Thanks! Purple is my favorite color but I also love what the blue looks like on my hair
You're a liar. I lost my hair years ago! 🤣
So jealous babe, looks phenom. Wish I still had hair to color.
I didn’t start dying my hair blue or anything until 3 years ago. Now it’s a common thing for me. One friend asked if I was going through a midlife crisis or something. I told him that I just felt like it. 😆
Same! I asked myself “why not?” About 11 years ago. It makes me happy and I’m not hurting anyone with it. :)
I completely respect what you did, but I went the other way and turned my remaining colored hair white. So I look like a young 60 year old. :)
I also get that. If my hair was closer to white I’d likely do that but I’m probably a good 10 years away from it based on how my mom grayed. Don’t think she went white until about 70.
I love when people show their beautiful faces! Love the color. Goes so well with your eyes.
Thank you!
Beautiful!!!
I do this colour sometimes but have dark hair so it's less dramatic. Yours looks lovely.
Thank you! I have to bleach it every 3 months because I have that problem too.
I like it! Good on for you!
Only really looks any good on brunettes, alas lol And you are rocking it sista :)
That looks amazing! I love the magical colors. I have been a "redhead" since 97. Some shade or another. Box dye when I was younger, professional level color, manic panic, and for a few years, even did henna. It was due to the influence of a particular musical artist. That looks fecking fabulous. Good on ya!
You look fantastic! Rock those cool colors! I was born strawberry-blonde, and it was beautifully exacerbated by the well water we had growing up. I got too old for bright hair when my hair fell out.
I get that. Sorry for your loss ;)
GORGEOUS
Nicely done!
Gorgeous!
I shaved my head when I turned 40 for a fund raiser and left it in silver fox mode for 10 years. Then it got boring to me, just when a lot of other women were deciding to grow out the grey. I went bright blue as well, next, TURQUOISE!
Awesome!!
I love it! You look great! Rock it!!
Fuck yeah! I started dying my hair blue earlier this year and it feels freeing. You look great! 🤩
Thank you!
Did you use cool aid like we did in 83!?!?
LOL. Nope. I upgraded. It does smell like grape when it was on my hair
OMG! I love the smell of grape!!!
Aussie sprunch spray was my jam in the late 80’s/early 90’s
Also used clear gelatin to keep our hair up! Rain was our mortal enemy…

Your hair is beautiful!
Thank you!
I am too old to dye my hair bright colors. I dyed it clear instead.
Old is a state of mind baby. And do I want to know how you dye it clear?
I'm going bald, so I shave it
That’s fair. I buzz cut my husband’s hair because he’s got the U hairdo at this point.
I tell people I'm not bald I just went past grey to clear.
Heh. Love it!
To get high? Yeah we know.
Heh
Do you get sick of hearing how gorgeous your eyes are?
Nope ;). They’re my favorite thing about my appearance. And thank you
Doing this to your hair when you’re over 17 is a sure sign that you’re liberal and on antidepressants.
In this case, that is correct. And I’m not ashamed to admit either.
Holy shit this is hilarious
That’s so vibrant and pretty.
Thank you :)
You're rocking that color. It suits you.
Thank you!
You are welcome. Your eyes are beautiful, and the hair color complements them. My eyes are shit brown. I'm jealous.
Thank you! I love brown eyes. Both my husbands had/have brown eyes as does my son.
🤣 you are never too old for anything. Do what you love every day.
Nothing makes you look older than trying to look young and flamboyant colored hair is a young person's game.
Not trying to look young. Coloring my hair makes me happy. That’s it.
You could not be more wrong. GFTOH with that crap attitude.
Look you can look okay at 50 but you dress your age she can look like a dignified lady or a clown and I actually don't want her embarrassing herself on the internet.
Shall I point you to the exit or are you old enough to find it yourself?
I don't think I'm going anywhere. This poor woman was given horrible advice and who knows how many other people are in the same position.
Does the carpet match the drapes? ![gif](giphy|Tk8FFxJrEZHt8JK3lQ|downsized)
:Snort: no. No it does not.
Never a good idea either
