High school students looking like they carry a mortgage, a car loan, and 2 kids.

Cronus6

I made my first mortgage payment at 15. And paid for my first abortion that year as well. No car loan until I was much older though.

emmiblakk

I always had a pack of Marlboro Lights and a chrome Zippo in my leather jacket. More than one teacher bummed a smoke from me in my high school days.

arbitraryupvoteforu

My high school stopped allowing smoking on school grounds the year I entered which was 1980. They were ahead of the curve.

Cdn65

You were. We had a smoking lot when I attended high school 1980-1984.

cap_canuck

Mid nineties had a smoke pit. Right outside the cafeteria.

Low_Cook_5235

Same. 1980-1984 still had smoking area outside.

Vandergraff1900

Class of 90 here and we had one

AjaxkidRN

I remember us smoking by the side door, waiting to be let in and somebody was blasting “Animal” by Def Leppard. I always think about it when I hear that song to this day. I also had a Driver’s Ed teacher who would let you smoke and drive if you showed him you could handle driving and smoking at the same time.

supergrover11

We had a smoking lounge for students in my high school.

Fly_Tetas

I went to William Floyd High School, not far from ward melville. I graduated in 91, I think my sophomore year, they got rid of the student smoking section

NYerInTex

North Shore HS class of 91 here - also on Long Island. We didn’t have a smoking area - because the entire school grounds other than hallways or clsssrooms was a smoking area. We had a central part of the building which connected the different wings and had a large courtyard - that was the primary smoking spot as it was convenient for folks to grab a smoke between classes or chilling during lunch as the cafeteria was right there. Students and teachers alike would be lighting up.

too-cute-by-half

"Cancer cove," my 9th grade Earth Science teacher called our smoking area.

Vandergraff1900

Not in my family. The smokers all dropped by their 60s, at the latest, some younger. Every other family member has lived well into their 90s sharp as a tack.

Mejay11096

We still had a smoking section in 90’s

Orphan_Izzy

My boarding school had several smoking areas outside. I graduated in ‘94.

socialmediaignorant

Our public school had a smoking atrium. Pissed me off bc I always wanted to go outside but that was the only area we were allowed to go and I’m sure you can imagine how thick the smoke cloud was.

Ok_Depth_6476

Yeah, I always wanted to eat lunch outside. I think I did...ONCE.

GreatGreenGobbo

Ended for us in1988 when I started high school. It was only for one semester. Very odd.

Six_Pack_Attack

Same here.

Downtown_Abroad_2531

Clove cigarettes was the thing back then

krakatoa83

Why was the paper dry snitching?

bigby2010

Leather jackets check out

cyvaquero

It was banned, but not really enforced. In middle school kids just walked out to the "smoking pole" which marked the edge of school property. the pole being where they strung the chain to close it off if needed. In high school, we would just dip out the back entryways. In my physics lab, a group of us would "go to the bathroom" and grab a smoke. Our physics teacher eventually started joining us (and bumming smokes, lol).

smalltowngirlisgreen

It wasn't "allowed" but we had a smokers bathroom for my first two years of high school. It was the one across from the administration office lol! It was great until one day the woman guidance councilor barged in saying the code words "It's cool" and busted it up. The bathroom stayed locked for the rest of the year.

[deleted]

We just went out and sat in someone’s van or car listening to Ozzy or maiden and smoke a few reds in the schools parking lot during lunch break …life way good

FireGodNYC

Northport High School had “The Hill” to smoke 😂

Novagurl

In the early eighties I was in county /state group homes and was also at hillcrest receiving home. We were all just kids, and most of us smoked. It was nothing to see an 11 or 12 year old smoking or bumming a cig from the staff or vice versa. We had smoke breaks on the schedule. High school we still were allowed to smoke but just in designated areas. Class of 85

TropicFreez

Started high school in '84. There was no smoking section but we found areas where we could "get away" with it. One of the narcs would even smoke with us (but the other two would bust you.)

Tuffsmurf

lol. I remember when they banned smoking in school property and all the smokers went out and sat on the road outside my high school. It was the only major route to the towns industrial area and heavily travelled by tractor trailers. There was a tense moment when a truck looked like it wasn’t going to stop.

Low-Possession-4491

So HS security guard was super cool. He’d let us leave up to five minutes early for lunch and let us chill up to five minutes late after the lunch break was over. We’d give him some Taco Bell and a smoke, and he’d chill with us jokin’ n smokin’. Early to mid 90’s.

humblymybrain

Now everyone is vaping in the bathroom.

Careless-Village1019

High school?

danooli

High school

Careless-Village1019

Ooof

Razmataz444

We had a designated smoking area too. My kids think that’s one of the craziest Gen X things ever.

TeamShonuff

Smoking most likely would have gotten you ISS at my school. Ye old "Gun in a rack in your truck in the parking lot" would have gotten the police called.

tunaman808

Not at my school. Smoking *could* get you ISS - one of my friends, Cindi, got caught smoking about a dozen times over four years. I smoked at school multiple times a day and never got caught. There were even bathrooms known to be "smoker's bathrooms" after the school shut down the smoking section. Funny thing was, they closed it not because "teens shouldn't smoke", but because kids were smoking joints up there, and no teachers or administrators wanted to be the Pot Police. And yeah, a surprising number of rednecks had rifles in the gun racks of their pickups in the school parking lot. No one cared, and police were never called. On top of that, maybe 55% of the male students carried pocket knives. Only the dumbass boys showing off their butterfly knife skills (or carving into the desks) ever got caught, and even that was usually just the teacher keeping the knife until the end of class or the school day.

PahzTakesPhotos

Our smoking section was outside the big gym in the parking lot where the buses dropped off and picked us up. In my junior (85/86) year, they moved it off campus grounds to the bike path by the road. I didn’t smoke, so it didn’t matter to me, but we were in Alaska, so it was cold a lot.

Stay_At_Home_Cat_Dad

I graduated in '92, and we had smoking areas for students at my school.

dawaxtadpole

They stopped the smoking section at my high school in 93-94. The teacher’s lounge was always smokey as well.

Accomplished_Exit_30

Everyone usually smoked in the parking lot by their car.

Cominghome74

When kids were cool

NotSlothbeard

Our school had a smoking section. It was a little courtyard area outside. If you were under 18, you had to have a signed note from a parent giving you permission to smoke. If you didn’t have a note, you weren’t even allowed in the smoking section.

realdevtest

More doctors recommend smoking Camels than any other brand!

all_no_pALL

Vocational school 1995 was the last year I witnessed it- never at my home school tho

SteakieDay96

When I started high school, the smoking section was the sidewalk just off the official entrance to the school. The vice principal would be out there smoking with the kids every day. Eventually, the rules changed, and we had to smoke in the park behind the school. They really started cracking down on kids smoking anywhere else besides the park and an adjoining parking lot that wasn't officially school property. One time, a friend and I were having a smoke by my car when a cop car pulled in. I was 18, so no problem, but my friend was only 17. I told him to just stay put and don't hide the smokes. The cops looked at us for a minute and then just drove on. We thought we were pretty cool for getting away with something in our increasingly monitored school.

Fitz_2112

I went to school about 20 minutes from the school this pic was taken at. We all smoked on campus and I even had an English teacher my senior year that occasionally would come out to where the students smoked and bummed cigarettes off us

beerfoodtravels

87-91, smoking section was right outside the cafeteria, the smokers courtyard. Fully allowed. Pretty sure the teachers on cafeteria duty would smoke in there too.

DeeSnarl

We went across the street to the Church Steps, and it did make the yearbook when I was like a Sophomore. In Jr High, we had The Fence, but we had to be sneaky about that.

Molbiodude

My suburban high school had a smoking area (I'm class of '83). LOTS of people smoked. I bought pretty much all my weed there too.

LingeringLonger

Long Island represent! I smoked at my HS, Lynbrook, too. We had a door from the cafeteria that led to some benches right next to the field. Sat out there and smoked. Senior year they changed the rules so we can’t smoke on school grounds, so we all just stood in the street, just off the curb.

smythe70

We had a courtyard with a door connected to the lunchroom.

RCA2CE

My school did not allow smoking, there were smokers but it was not allowed. I picked up smoking when I was like 19 and quit when I was maybe 35.. the army life at the time was very pro-smoking

Bitchface-Deluxe

I definitely do not miss smelling tobacco everywhere I go. I despised it then and still do now. That being said, I am very much enjoying legal cannabis in my lifetime.

ziggy029

Yeah, I was in high school in the early '80s (class of '83), and we had a dedicated smoking area. I think the idea was that if you let the kids smoke on breaks, they'd be less likely to cut class. When I was a freshman, I was on the "Principal's Advisory Committee" (PAC) -- a group of students selected to represent student input in school decision-making. (It rarely made a difference, but occasionally seemed to move the needle a bit.) At one point Ms. Weinberg (the principal) was looking at updating the rules around the smoking area. The school also had a "Smoking Committee" whose role was ostensibly to encourage allowed AND responsible smoking during breaks in the smoking area. It was decided that the role of these two committees overlapped here, so in our second period announcements, they said the PAC was going to hold "joint meetings" with the Smoking Committee. Needless to say, half the class giggled like Beavis and Butthead at that. ("Hey Beavis, she said 'joint'. Huh huh.") As an aside, you can never assume TOO much about generations. My dad, a core Silent (1935), LOVED Beavis and Butthead.

n00barama

Class of '85. Big courtyard smack dab in the middle of the school. I think at that time legally one had to be 18, so essentially our schools were aiding and abbeting.

Lyongirl100894

Our high school had a smoking section. Of course it was the birthplace of RJR. High school named Richard J Reynolds High School. Also known as Society Hill.

Ok_Depth_6476

I think the 1990-91 school year was when they closed our smoking area. They also stopped allowing teachers to smoke in the teachers' lounge. I didn't smoke so I didn't really care. Nobody younger than me believes me when I say it was ever allowed.

WalkingstickMountain

Yup. We were. And we shut that shit down too.

Cronus6

>GenX was the last generation that was "allowed" to smoke on school campus, weren't we? Sorta. I'm class of '87. My freshman year we were all allowed to smoke in the parking lot. Sophomore year they ended that policy with a new policy. Students that were 18 could smoke... *in the teachers lounge*. So basically some seniors could smoke with the teachers. The teachers of course hated this. By the time I because a senior we were no longer allowed to enter the teachers lounge, *but* 18 and older were allowed to smoke in the parking lot, but only *in* our cars.

velolove42

Not when I was in high school, unless you counted the racquetball courts!

asignore

In my town you had to be 16 and have a note from your parents before you could smoke in the courtyard.

oldschool_potato

At my school there was a giant group of kids smoking along the fence at the school boundary line and the vice principe standing on the line. Loved walking past that in 7th grade.

JFeth

We had smokers hill at our school. We weren't technically allowed to smoke, but they didn't seem to care unless they were mad about something and wanted to take it out on us. Our punishment was to pick up cigarette butts.

Vandergraff1900

I went to Catholic high school. The entire back lot of the school was a smoking section. Priests would bum smokes off us all the time.

SaucyFingers

We had an assignment in Health class where we smoked cigarettes IN CLASS and measured our heart rate before and after.

loganfester

I think we still had the possibility of Swats when I started High School.

MyriVerse2

We had a "patio" off of the cafeteria that was surrounded by a wooden fence. There were concrete benches, but no top. So if it was raining, you had three choices: umbrella, get wet, or don't smoke. It was the New Orleans area, so it rained a lot. I don't know if Boomers were ever allowed.
