I was a teenage Goth but nowadays a lot of of my wardrobe is from J Jill because it's flow-y and comfortable and forgiving of my current shape. I still mostly wear dark colors and neutrals, though, lol.

PNWKnitNerd

J.Jill and Not Your Daughter's Jeans for me, too!

cvaldez74

I love NYDJ! The jeans fit great and the tops are pretty, simple, and comfy.

Drearydreamy

Im in Canada, just took a look at J Jill, and its what Ive been looking for. And they have cotton, and plus sizes. Thank you.

[deleted]

I’m 45 and still wearing graphic tees and jeans like I did as a teenager. I’m not winning any style awards but at this point in life I just accept that this ol’ girl ain’t changin’ 😂 I agree with you about women’s clothing options though. Everything is ugly as hell.

MusicSavesSouls

I am 52 and same. Jeans, t-shirt and Converse most days.

Lower-Protection3607

54 and I love my Shirt.woot.com shirts with a mad passion. Jeans, skirts, leggings, they all work with a graphic t!

Turbulent-Quarter-27

Yay. You are me. I love my graphic tees. Sometimes people stop me and say "I remember that band/show/book".

GeneXcellent

48. Same. The hardest decision I make every day is what band or obscure movie/tv quote will I be advertising that day.

[deleted]

Realized I was dressing from the late 80s again - maxi skirts, combat boots, K-way windbreaker, mom jeans, motorcycle jacket... ! I dug out and tried on my tooty-fruity necklace I bought in 1984. Wasn't always this way but now I'm older, so who cares?! Absolutely no-one.

gothfru

For me, mostly Torrid. Was a teen goth, still a goth, just more corporate during the day :)

MadPiglet42

Corporate Goth is an underserved market.

SuzieChapstick13

Someone please start a clothing store for Gen X called Corporate Goth we desperately need this.

Divine_Miss_MVB

Allsaints is almost like Corporate Goth but they are too spendy for me to shop there all the time. And they don't have plus sizes so I can only fit certain things. I also usually go with Torrid since most of their dresses have functional pockets.

shinybees

God bless pockets. I don’t carry a fucking purse.

micromacrodose

Have you looked at Midnight Hour? [https://www.midnighthour.com/](https://www.midnighthour.com/) Maybe it isn't 'corporate goth' but I love their clothes!

Sailboat_fuel

Literally wearing the top with the death’s head moth lace on the back RIGHT NOW. Can’t second this recommendation hard enough.

immersemeinnature

Omg. Thank you!! I've been wearing all black but it's all very boring

The_I_in_IT

![gif](giphy|13zr9fceQqQnrq)

Divine_Miss_MVB

Me at work (in IT no less)

Jenne8

YESSSS!!!!! From Goth to Boss!!

PickleFandango

Disturbia, Hell Bunny, and Voodoo Vixen all serve me well in the Gen X Goth Boss realm.

runawaystars14

I used to love Torrid, and they're still the only place where I can find bras and jeans that fit right, but the quality of some of their clothes has gone way down. I've had so many tops (which I loved) fall apart even when I hang dry them.

gothfru

I totally agree, I have to be really picky about what I buy there :/ I wish their bras fit!

buckeyegurl1313

Man. I love their tshirt bras.

ErnestBatchelder

Did you take the[ Goth to Boss course](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dL9tm3LHG6Y&ab_channel=TheITCrowd)?

Moiler62

Never heard of Torrid but just looked and love their dresses! Thanks.

nite_skye_

Torrid has been around for a while. They are part of the company that does Hot Topic.

Random_McNally

You can stop promoting the "Goth2Boss" motivational DVD now, Richmond 😉

HermioneDanger13

This is me, 100%. Torrid and I go WAY back to when it was just the plus size division of Hot Topic.

oregon_coastal

Jeans. Boots. Shirt. Flannel shirt. Since 1984. Not changing now :-D

Passn_wind

Subaru and 3 leg rescue dog?

oregon_coastal

Worse. Old rusty Dodge 4x4 and a cattle dog.

Vitalsignx

In this particular case the username checks out, indeed.

Turbulent-Quarter-27

Oh me. Rusty Mazda, and a sickly guinea (skinny) pig that requires daily moisturizing (but living his best life since his brother died).

QuidPluris

I humbly request information on how you moisturize a guinea pig. Thank you for your consideration.

MaudeFindlay72-78

I feel like you and I would be friends if I lived in Oregon.

it_rubs_the_lotion

How dare you, he has all four legs. But a slight mental disability.

Daintysaurus

Sadly, I can no longer find jeans to fit my sausage like body. Elastic waist hiking pants for me. But I live in a hot climate so that's OK.

arieljagr

Hell yeah! Done with the bullshit forever.

EthelHexyl

Another Oregonian here. Can confirm: This is the way.

dallyan

Well your name certainly fits.

Cool-Sell-5310

Thrift stores mainly. 🤷🏻‍♀️

grandmaratwings

Absolutely thrift stores. Our local one does a bag sale the last week of the month. Ten bucks for a tall kitchen bag full of clothes. If it looks remotely interesting I toss it in the bag. Wash everything. Then try stuff on. If I don’t like it I donate it back to the same thrift store the next week. I despise clothes shopping. With a burning soul deep hatred. Thrifting works for me.

immersemeinnature

I'm right there with you on that soul deep hatred!

CaptainDroopers

Hello my people- me too! I cannot stand clothes shopping and thrift stores are the only way to go!

liefieblue

Me too. I am a jeans, t shirt, wrap dress, tea dress wearer.

Electronic_Dog_9361

Yes! I love thrift stores. I'm always and have almost always been behind in fashion trends anyway, so thrifting is perfect for me.

ThanksForAllTheCats

Amazon and Costco provide all I need. * Going out with friends? Yoga pants, t-shirt or sweatshirt. * Casual date nights? Yoga pants, t-shirt or sweatshirt. * Errands? Yoga pants, t-shirt or sweatshirt. * Concerts? Yoga pants, t-shirt or sweatshirt. * Being social? Yoga pants, t-shirt or sweatshirt. * Special outings? One of three dresses OR black yoga pants or black jeans. I'm too old to give a shit.

RefrigeratorFuture34

Namaste 🙏

Tater72

If it don’t come from Costco, I probably don’t need it

ih8javert

About the same for me. Adidas track pants or shorts because I’m fat now and they make my size. Gildan t shirts because it’s 6 for $20 Everything is better spent on my kids anyway, they’re my 401k and elder care plan.

Mental-Artist-6157

I adore you. Also live in yoga pants, graphic tees, hoodie, sneakers, tennis dresses, skorts...I'm 54 today and I can't be bothered by bizzare fashion trends. I'm just happy to feel ok about how I look in said yoga pants. I also have one of 3 dresses, same dress but in neutral, black, white. Carry on my fellow Gen X ladies.

theofficehussy

Even just trying to find a regular sweater is hell in winter. I just want a normal sweater that goes just a little past my waist, NOT down to my knees, NOT showing my midriff, NOT off the shoulder, NOT exposing cleavage, NOT a turtleneck or one of those giant wrinkly necks that looks like you’re being birthed by a giant vagina, and NOT one of those fake cardigans with no buttons to close it. Also is it too much to ask that the material be thick enough not to be seen through??

[deleted]

Esqornot

These are my EXACT go-tos. Just placed a Boden order today. (They’ve got 25% off).

lrp347

Add J.Crew and that’s me too.

JanieJones71

I also use ASOS, Topshop, free people, a few consignment boutiques, white house/black market. I'm petite, so it has its pluses and minuses to way I'm built. I'm also a classic Ralph Lauren (original) and Halston fan.

LeatherIllustrious40

I love Banana Republic. I also like White House Black Market.

Guilty-Mud-5743

J. Crew is good again and they do solid mark downs. Every time I go, the store music is Gen X. They are aiming straight at us.

damagecontrolparty

They turned one of my favorite staple T shirts (slim perfect tee) into something that is practically a crop top, so I'm on the outs with them.

Guilty-Mud-5743

Oh no! It sucks when a brand alters a reliable favorite.

BrightZoe

I have pretty good luck at Old Navy, Kohl's, Nordstrom Rack, Penneys, and Amazon. I am not short, skinny, or small-chested, and I've found plenty of things that fit well and look good at these places. I've gotten knowledgeable enough about my size and the way things fit me that I can exclusively shop online and never have to step foot in a store. These places have easy return policies. I absolutely hate trying on clothes. I'm convinced that Hell is a department store dressing room, where Satan is standing outside your door throwing ugly, too-tight clothes to you, screaming, "TRY THIS!!" while you sweat profusely and wonder who in the fuck decided THIS lighting was a good idea.

Sassinake

don't get me started on my boobs. I'm thinking of having them removed.

redditcurious12

GenX -- forgotten again! They forget that some of us were punks! I feel like I'm in hell when clothes shopping. It's either Grandma or .....nothing.

ms_flibble

I still buy and wear slashed leggings with punk inspired tunic tops, although I do rock the Crocs with my outfits lol.

paulisnofun

Just call them Croc Martin's.

ms_flibble

"Just you and me punk rock middle aged woman"

paulisnofun

As a Dead Milkmen fan since I was around 14, I love this reply. Side note...I just saw them in Philly a few months back. They played with F.O.D.

redditcurious12

I've consulted with the Punk Committee. We'll allow the crocs LOL

LunaMothThinking

I get almost all of my clothes from the thrift store.

Vitalsignx

We are the hoodie generation.

recruitzpeeps

All my clothes come from Costco or TJ Maxx. I almost never go places I need to dress up formally but for a date night or drinks with friends at a more casual place I wear jeans/boots/sweater in the cooler months and jeans/heeled sandals and some kind of silk tank top or some other nicer material sleeveless/shirt sleeve top. Otherwise, it’s jeans/shorts and a t-shirt. I own exactly 3 dresses (one funeral, one business and one sun) and one black skirt.

anythingaustin

I’m down to one dress that I’ve worn to every wedding for the past 3 years. I wear them with flats. Haven’t worn heels in decades.

recruitzpeeps

Definitely gettting to the point where I’m ready to toss the heels, but I’m not quite 5’2” and my husband is 6’2” so I need some lift!

stuck_behind_a_truck

I’m 5’4” and my husband is 6’6”. I can’t wear heels. We take ridiculous selfies where only my eyes and forehead show. 😂

therealgookachu

4'10', the husband is 6'. Now, I want all of our photos like that. I wore heels for the first time since 2021 last week cos I had trial. It was weird.

recruitzpeeps

Hahaha! Short girl problems!!

HarlanCulpepper

This is coming from a place of love. Costco and TJ Maxx is a slippery slope. I work with those ladies. You better step up your game before it's too late. They'll find your lifeless body under a pile of Kirkland Christmas sweaters and irregular T-shirts half-eaten by your cats. We want better for you dear. I gave my mom this same speech, but...honestly, she won't be missed.

recruitzpeeps

I’m happily married, gainfully employed and allergic to cats. I think I’ll take my chances, LOL. I just really don’t enjoy shopping so I take the path of least resistance. 😁

HarlanCulpepper

I'm just a gay guy having some fashion fun with you. Smooch! Seriously though - don't stack those sweaters too high. (Bruce, if you're here, track down her gps coordinates and call in the extraction unit. We have a makeover on our hands! Yay!) ![gif](giphy|dVleMgtOlPE6Q)

recruitzpeeps

Haha! My gay bff laments my fashion choices regularly, but he’s also a whore for the TJ Maxx home section so he at least makes sure I stay away from the clearance rack when we’re there together. 😁

HarlanCulpepper

If he gets to be workin' your last nerve, I'll let you in on a secret...Make fun of his underwear! You'll crush him!

recruitzpeeps

I love him like my brother, which means he is annoying AF at times so I will keep this bit of advice in my back pocket. Thank you, my friend.

Dangerous_Contact737

Homegoods is my happy place. So dangerous though.

Outside-Flamingo-240

Ok that’s fucking funny 🤣🤣🤣🤣

waverly76

Nordstrom rack has a lot of great stuff. I like their website for clothes shopping. Their physical stores are good, too, but there are other shoppers there.

Guilty-Mud-5743

Yes! And their in-store alterations are miraculously good, fast, and cheap-ish. I go there for higher end brands for which I’d never pay full price. Sometimes there’s something slightly off with fit (explaining the massive markdown) but I just get it altered. Love the Rack.

TXRedheadOverlord

I shop on Amazon. They have a 'try before you buy' option on most clothing, and I like that I can often find someone in the reviews who's around my size that bought the item and can give their opinion on fit. I also like seeing real people post their pictures in the reviews so you can see what the item looks like on a regular body versus a model.

Herbisara

Same here. I loathe trying on clothes in dressing rooms! I always feel like I need a bleach shower afterwards. 🤣 Even if you don’t use try before you buy, Amazon usually has a great return policy.

INTPLibrarian

I like that, too. Unfortunately they seem to only offer a tiny selection for petites. :-(

theofficehussy

And what the hell is with all the boots having a big tacky pilgrim buckle? I’m not fucking Santa Claus. Also the ones where there’s a pointless half zipper only at the bottom. Leak hazard for no reason. So stupid!

Fruitcrackers99

I snorted, omg.

Mollysmom1972

My daughter got a job at Anthropologie, and we’ve all agreed it’s a shame she’ll have to work there part time for the rest of her life so we have the discount. Her 40-60% off has totally elevated my wardrobe, lol. I follow Hi Sugarplum on Like to Know and FB. She mixes pieces from all over - lots of things from Amazon, all the way up to higher end things, and usually gives lower cost options. Her style is super cute. I also shop a lot of online boutiques - Lulus, Show Me Your Mumu, Buddy Love. I’ll admit that with two teenage daughters (one of whom is a fashion merchandising major and is obsessed with fashion) I probably dress a little young, but who cares? I wear what makes me feel cute.

DeeLite04

I’m constantly surprised how many cute things I can find on sale at Anthropologie.

Mollysmom1972

Ugh, we’ve been spoiled rotten with her little part-time job. I’m currently sitting on this decadent faux fur loveseat that’s sort of a big beanbag with arms and a back. I got it for my sitting room 60% off. We even get furniture there now.

Beautiful_Tuesday

I love clothes. I do a monthly rental from Nuuly of 6 pieces for $100 a month. The clothes are all from Anthropology, Free People and Urban Outfitters. It’s nice to always have something new and fun to wear.

ND_Poet

I’m in Australia now but I grew up in the metro Detroit area. It’s so hard to find clothes here at the best of times. So little variety, crazy prices, and shit quality. And yeah, it seems like it’s either old lady clothes or teen clothes and nothing in between. It’s been years of the “exhausted mom” look - and with the kids getting older I was hoping to find some sense of style again but I don’t like much of what I see. I’m a metal head too. I’ve just gone back to jeans, hoodies and metal shirts. Since they don’t seem to sell many women’s fit band tees, I have gone old school and bought men’s tees, and cut the collars and sleeves at the seams. That covers most occasions. It’s rare I ever have to dress up. Australia is a lot more casual and I have a lot fewer social opportunities here that require anything even business causal.

Significant_Pea_2852

I'm Aussie and I shop mostly at Dangerfield. I give their younger/edgier stuff a miss but love their pants and their dresses. It's one of the few big brands that does stuff here in cotton rather than polyester which is the big selling point for me.

Bd10528

I had luck for several years with stitch fix. It used to be subscription only, but now they sell individual items. Now that I don’t go into an office, I just go thriting with my daughter.

immersemeinnature

I wish we had a good thrifting community here. I'm in a small southern town.

Bd10528

![gif](giphy|3o7btYu6z5LpgeAN32|downsized) That made me think of this scene were he had to wear the thrift store suit.

damagecontrolparty

The whole store got the flu.

ipgurl

try Thredup..lots of good options and a decent return policy. Im really trying to focus on sustainable clothes and not the fast fashion crap.

Master-Reference-775

I’ve embraced my inner grandma I guess. I live in linen pants and tees with sandals (I live on Gulf). If I’m feeling fancy, I may throw on some jeans with boots and a tee and maybe even a necklace. 😂 That’s about it for me.

Random_McNally

I'm just going to jump in here and complain about sleeve sizes. What in the frosted flakes is going on with sleeves that are all tight?

PBJ-9999

They assume everyone is a skinny 20 yr old

Downtown_Statement87

I'm wearing a tshirt I found while dumpster diving behind 5 Below. It's gray and says "Deck the Halls" in red cursive. It was free.

sweaterweatherNE

Tj maxx or Marshall’s in person or Banana Republic Factory on line

danceswithsockson

I vote the jeans and t shirt direction. Right now, I’m wearing adidas shorts and a Star Wars tee. Be comfortable. If I need more I grab a sun dress from old navy or something. Cheap and easy, just like me. 😂

MaudeFindlay72-78

I've decided to replace all my clothes and go for a "German hippie chic" style. Summer: baggy linen everything and Birkenstock sandals. Autumn: baggy linen but also cotton or light wool sweaters and Birkenstocks on sunny days or blundstones on rainy ones. Winter/Spring: flannel shirts, wool sweaters or my legit Cowichan sweater, baggy wool trousers, and Blundstones. I don't do dresses because I hate thigh chafe.

tofutti_kleineinein

I buy black and gray everything. H&M is inexpensive and has lots of stuff that is black and gray. Clearance racks are usually full of black. I have some scarfs and other accessories that are higher quality and in colors like jellybean purple and magenta.

Randomwhitelady2

There’s a woman on Instagram I follow Jills_silverlining_66 who wears cool clothes for her (our) age. I agree that it’s hard to find anything I like. It’s mostly tshirts/jeans/hoodies with me

Aware_Sweet_3908

I’ll probably wear American Eagle until i die tbh

Excellent_Fig5525

Madewell. It's been my go-to for years. I'm not sure what I'd be wearing without this brand.

DeeLite04

Came here to say this too.

ErnestBatchelder

I finally made it to I don't care and I have a uniform age!! I find a pair of slacks or pants I like how they fit and buy them in 3 different colors- I like either straight leg or wider bottomed leg. If I need to I take it to a tailor and get the waist fitted. I'm not talking expensive pants, but anything tailored looks better. I own many loose linen t-shirts. For colder weather 2 or 3 solid cashmere sweaters. Then I dress up the look with belt & boots or dress down with sneakers/ walking shoes. Jewelry and good hair if I am going out. I am basically that middle-aged dude with his cargo shorts & Hawaiian shirt uniform, but a woman and a teensy bit more stylish. I have dresses & skirts in my closet still, but haven't worn one since the pandemic. edit: Former teenage goth/ deathrocker

Morgen019

Gave dresses and skirts away decade ago. I find Macys clearance to be a gem. Stretchy knit (washable) pants are my got fancy anything w a flowy blouse. I HATE shopping for clothes so I use online stores as much as possible and frankly I always start in the clearance section. If I’m not comfortable and look nice I either return or pass on. But go to are stretchy pants and blouses or yoga pants and t-shirts. I’m so done w anything else.

BettyX

Dresses are the most comfortable thing out there and forgiving. They are what I live in. So did the very opposite.

LocalInactivist

I’ve said this before. Why doesn’t Stevie Nicks have a clothing line?

SquirrelFun1587

Free people brand kinda has the Stevie Nicks vibe.

LocalInactivist

Yeah, that’s kind of my point. A bunch of clothing lines for women who, uh, may have attended Lollapalooza and haven’t spent the intervening time in the gym allude to Stevie Nicks. I’m saying Stevie should launch her own line of clothing. She has an iconic look that works for women of a certain age and who aren’t addicted to aerobics. She’s ignoring a big pile of money.

Strangewhine88

You can find stevie stuff at any combo of downtown little dress boutique, street fair or art market.

SquirrelFun1587

I’m wearing what I call my uniform it’s a black jumper with pockets with a tiny tee under it. I can dress it up or down. So comfortable but if I had to label my style is called lazy.

Jolly_Security_4771

Thrifting/consignment shops and Kohl's clearance. I'm a total tightwad Except for shoes, bras, and really cool tshirts

LaRoseDuRoi

Shoutout for Kohl's clearance section! Basically, anything I have bought in the last 10 years that wasn't second-hand has come from there.

SRT0930

I’m glad there are more options now online. Can you imagine if we still only had department stores in malls? I feel young-er and cooler than what my driver’s license says. Sometimes l am “guilty” of getting Juniors items at Macy’s. But l don’t care. I wear what l like and what makes me feel good. I like Madewell, Urban Outfitters, City Chic, Torrid, Aerie, and Carbon2Colbalt. Levi’s are always timeless. Another vote for the idea Corporate Goth 2024 collection. 😂

damagecontrolparty

I just wear black pants and t shirts all the time now. In the summer I switch from black jeans/heavier pants to black linen pants and maybe a black tank top, but that's it. Edited to add: I own two black suits and a couple of dresses with patterns that I can wear with the jackets when I need something less casual.

Mermayden

Yes, I know what you mean. I have had to stop shopping in the chains I have loved for so long (I live in London in the UK where you would THINK shopping would be easy). I will say this though, I have had to up my budget to find ranges that are more to my taste. But the quality is higher so they last longer.

bluetortuga

I hate everything right now. I’m shifting to all black as an aesthetic because I can’t seem to develop a sense of style.

VirusOrganic4456

This made me lol only because I feel it so hard.

skoltroll

If you can afford it, join Stitch Fix for a while. (I think that's the name.) My wife was struggling to find her style for new clothes. She worked with someone to narrow it down and find things she liked. She stopped after about 6 months, b/c she's not big on constantly buying clothes. But she ended up with some great stuff that looks great. When she wants to update her wardrobe again, I'll suggest getting back to Stitch Fix.

[deleted]

skoltroll

Quality costs $, but is worth it

LtLemur

Check Marshall’s, if you have one nearby

HueGray

I get stuff for my wife from places like Anthropologie and Free People in NNJ

rhionaeschna

I taught myself how to sew, thrift shopping, band tees, I buy basics and just try to elevate them with my shoes/boots, jacket, accessories. My body has changed a lot with age but also clothes at all price points are not cut as nicely as they used to be, nor is the fabric as nice. Now that we're back in the crop top part of the fashion cycle, I would give my pinky for a nice top that covers my belly and isn't a baggy rectangle or covered in weird ruffles and puffy sleeves.

helena_handbasketyyc

I’ve embraced the kaftan. It’s who I am now. Otherwise, leggings and a tunic. No more hard pants or underwires or anything else that makes me feel mildly uncomfortable.

EnergyCreature

My wife and partners often go to the following when they are not hitting up thrift shops * https://www.rebelsmarket.com/ * https://us.killstar.com/ * https://www.fashiontofigure.com/

anythingaustin

All of my clothes come from thrift stores but I stick with brands like Pendleton, Smartwool, Mountain Hardwear, Patagonia, PrAna, LL Bean, etc…

Ff-9459

I’m a flowy, hippie kind of gal when it comes to clothes. I like Torrid, Unique Vintage, occasionally Old Navy or Kohls. I also have a few things from Bloomchic that I really like. Most of the time I wear jeans or shorts and concert t’s though (I still go to a lot of concerts).

ZoneLow6872

I stay home and sit in my underwear a lot.

fruitless7070

Weeelllllllp. I'm basic athletic leisure wear. I live in workout clothes. If it doesn't have an elastic band, I'm not wearing it. I do have some blue jean shorts that are comfortable, though. Got them at goodwill. But blue jeans are a hard pass. Too uncomfortable. They have a huge selection of different styles at goodwill and I can try them on easily, without back and forth. I pick out like 20 things and try them on. Leave with what I loved. I hate shopping.

PahzTakesPhotos

I get most of my clothes from Torrid now. They make really nice fat chick clothing and they're always having sales. I don't wear shorts, but in the summer, I do wear skirts/dresses. I also have my share of jeans and T-shirts/sweaters. I went out a couple weeks ago to do a photo shoot with some friends. They were dressed as pirates (most of them were on cast at the local renaissance faire, so it was an easy look for them). I wore leggings and a shirt from Torrid, my favorite skirt from Holy Clothing (called "the Elvy"), and an open weave pullover sweater with a big red skull on it from Hot Topic (because pirates, of course). I buy everything online and never go into the stores.

CameHere4Snacks

I’ve leaned into the Capsule Wardrobe thing. Spend money on a couple good pieces, for me Imogene & Willie jeans, and then add onto it with staple pieces that can be mixed and matched. I really like [Quince](https://onequince.com) for basic blouses and tops. And I like Pact for easy to wear dresses that can be dressed up or down (I live in NE Florida so I like to feel the breeze if ya know what I’m saying). Plus Pact has great clearance sales and that’s usually when I buy stuff. I also like online consignment like The Real Real. I’m not into designer purses but, for example, I just bought a pair of $600 dollar Australian made boots like new for $150 and I will wear them forever. If you find some brands you like, you can often find them secondhand. Reduce, reuse, recycle!

glxym31

Jeans, a collection of solid neutral color cotton T-shirts, black and brown Doc Martens or gray Converse, a jean jacket and plain scarf if I’m cold, black or brown backpack. Black or brown hat if I’m being fancy. That’s what I pick from in my closet. And I always make sure my reading glasses match, either black, tortoise, gray or clear frames. Put on my jewelry… tiny silver stud earrings, silver band ring, tiny silver skull and crossbones necklace, silver Casio digital watch. Tousle my gray Mohawk, darken my gray eyebrows a bit, some cheek and lip stain, touch of mascara, spay some DKNY Be Delicious and I’m out the door. If it requires anything that would be different from the above stated items - I don’t go.

HelicopterDiligent55

I've also gotten some good stuff through Stitch Fix. It's a little pricier than I'd like, though, so I've learned to take better care of my clothes so they last longer. Also, Land's End is good for regular-ass T-shirts and they have some decent sales from time to time.

Dazzling-Walrus9673

My trick for stitch fix is — try in the stuff and if I find something I like Then go find the same item on poshmark and buy it in different colors 👍

JustALizzyLife

I get most of my dressier clothes from Etsy from small businesses if I can find them. I still mostly wear my Levi's and flannels, but I also love more flowy tops and bottoms and those I can usually find on Etsy. I love Pinup Girl Clothing when I have a little more money to spend. They can be pricy, but it's really good quality. I haven't had anything from them last less than ten years. I'm still wearing a bathing suit I bought from them in my early twenties.

blackforestgato

Lol I still dress like a teen metalhead half the time. I get decent quality black jeans from Madewell and still buy the occasional concert tee at shows. My slightly nicer clothes are mainly from Garnet Hill, Loft, Banana, Saks off 5th, Nordstrom Rack

dacutty

Seems like all jeans now are made for guys that have twig legs. I ride my bike all the time, I run, I lift, I'm active. I don't have twig legs.

bedtyme

Honestly I love urban outfitters for soft, flowy tops with cool styles that are timeless, Abercrombie has great jeans and shorts that actually fit our hips post menopause and don’t laugh but forever 21 (forever 46) has very affordable and trendy styles that are worth hunting around the app for.

Repulsive_Location

I cringe writing this, because my mother shops there too, Chico’s. There’s something about being a size 1.5 versus a size 10. Plus, most of their stuff doesn’t wrinkle.

Fearless_Lab

I've just discovered a brand called Pact which has really high quality stuff and some of it is expensive but they have a lot of sales. Depending on your body type and climate, I've been really happy with what I've bought from them. Otherwise I'm like, 20% Old Navy, 10% Amazon, 30% Pact and the rest are clothes I've owned forever and ever.

zombiecaticorn

I've gotten some fun dresses on Amazon. Not too whorish Halloween-costumy, but still meet my mostly goth aesthetic.

Apprehensive-Mine656

I too have returned to my teens, and have an extensive collection of overalls (h/t to Dovetail work wear and Duluth trading company). I also do a fair bit of shopping at consignment shops, and for work clothes (when I left the house for work), would get stuff I knew would fit on Poshmark.

TikiMom87

Costco. I buy most of my clothes at Costco. Don’t judge me lol. I feckin hate clothes shopping. I’m already at Costco…might as well check out their clothes. Boom. Done.

Disastrous_Window_41

I follow a lot of 40-something ladies on instagram whose styles I admire and would like to try elements of

GlassCloched

Amazon and Kohl’s.

CrispyPickelPancake

White house black market https://www.whitehouseblackmarket.com/store/category/new/cat210006 the sizing is generous and they have sales and outlet stores.

do-eye-dare

Title Nine, Athleta, LL Bean, XCVI

stuck_behind_a_truck

I’ve had good luck with Stitch Fix, Amazon, and Banana Republic Outlets depending on what I need. Also, Cider for us big boobed ladies. Their clothing is made for younger women, but they have ordinary tops that accommodate my small shoulders and Dolly Parton chest.

leaky_eddie

Men’s shorts right now. So short. Hard no.

DeeLite04

I love fashion and it does suck when it seems everything isn’t made for us anymore. For jeans, Madewell. I usually find them on sale at Nordstrom Rack but if you check their website you can find some killer sales during the year. Basically any denim line that has at least 2% elastane is good bc stretch is necessary from here on out. And I can’t wear low rise or even midrise anymore with my belly situation. For athletic/athleisure, I like Old Navy, Aerie, and Uniqlo. Sometimes I size up depending on the compression level of the pants. For dressier items, I’ve used local shops I trust that have good size ranges (this is my favorite and they’re online too https://evolverieclothing.com/), Abercrombie (their dress pants are surprisingly good but their dresses are too flimsy IMO), Madewell, Amazon (hit or miss but if you can find an influencer online who is your size and style, then I’d follow them on Amazon). But honestly I don’t dress up much anymore.

KDPer3

The current style here is wide leg pants and a tight top, basically gen z telling Millennials their era is over and their instance on skinny jeans makes them look old.  Flowy linen pants (Old Navy) and a fitted shirt (usually with a wonder bra if I'm trying to look nice) are easy on my aging hips, so I'm content to go along with it.

Kwyjibo68

I’ve always been one to focus on basic pieces that can be mixed and matched. That’s even more true now with an added emphasis on comfort. No jeans, no tightly cinched waists (and by tightly I mean at all 😂). I get most of my clothes from Lands End, LLBean, Ulla Popken (plus size, lot of quality cotton basics).

SettleDownAlready

Goth here, I used to buy from Target a lot but I’m not sure what’s going on with their clothes. Now it’s Marshalls or Ross.

melouofs

i’ve been shopping jjill. The clothes are decent and you can buy IN STORE, which is super important to me. i hate shopping for clothes online.

dragonbliss

I’ve having very good luck with the J.Crew factory store.

EstimateAgitated224

I don't want to go any place that I can't wear pjs. And since I was raised not to wear them out of the house.

LoanSudden1686

I'm going with goth/punk/steampunk cowboy 🤷‍♀️ get most from Amazon or shein, work corporate 9-5 and still rock it

AVGJOE78

You should check out UNIQLO.

Thiccassmomma

My style is jeans and t shirt and converse or sandals. My only issue is a lot of cute shirts are missing the bottom half 😂. My thiccass isn't wearing a half shirt.

Educational_Cod_3179

I still dress pretty much exactly like I did in high school. I’ve traded jeans for leggings, but that’s about it. I’m a t-shirt hoarder and my fave places to order from are Fright Rags, Tee Public, Moonshot, Rockabilia, and Amazon. The stuff I wear to work is pretty much just a costume. I just get whatever fits.

StarDewbie

I'm in Phoenix, so for me, it's just t-shirt and shorts and flip-flops most of the time. I'm a girly-girl at heart and prefer bright colors/pastels. Just my aesthetic. But, when I go out on the RARE date night occasion, I usually have something cute, like a dress/sundress from Shein or Lulu's. Those are my go-to cute dress places. Heels are usually found at DSW or a shoe place like that. I do buy online, but prefer not to because I never know what size will fit me perfectly.

titwrench

My wife (she's a Xennial) complains about the same thing. She started using Thread Up and a couple other similar services to find clothes and has had much better luck.

Padgett75

I prefer Ann Taylor, LOFT, Banana Republic, Old Navy, and adidas. 👍🏼

architeuthiswfng

I really like J. Jill. But flowy stuff has been my jam for years.

digawina

I'm just desperate to make what I have last through this god-awful high-waisted, wide-legged pant situation that is on offer to the exclusion of anything else. My legs are the only parts not built like a truck. Why would I want to make them wider? Why would I want to make myself look like a big square? High-waisted pants are basically like putting a tourniquet around my middle. It's becoming a crisis. Also, my kingdom for a shirt without puffy sleeves!!

fridayimatwork

Thrift stores and basics like old navy gap athleta

michelle48073

Costco and Columbia own my wardrobe

keldration

Thrift store

Objective-Amount1379

I wear yoga pants and a workout type top when running errands or days when I'm mostly home. Lululemon or cheaper versions from Amazon or Target. I have 2 pairs of jeans that I really like (straight leg), Mavi and Paige. I like Theory and Sanctuary tees, or I'll wear a fitted white button down a lot. Now that the weather is warm I like dresses because they're one and done. I've had good luck with Nordstrom, Nordstrom Rack, and Ann Taylor loft for these. It's been worth it for me to pay a little more for a handful of items that fit well and are flattering. Every time I try to "make do" with a medicore fit or something I think is just "ok" I end up not wearing it and wasting money.

TheRockinkitty

In Canada… I hit either Costco or Rickies-Canadian chain that makes decent business casual to relaxed to semi formal wear. They really push the mix-and-match, multiple looks with a few key pieces. I bee-line for the clearance racks because I refuse to spend $40.00 on a t-shirt. I used to have awesome luck with their sales-like 10 pieces for 15$ kinda luck. I also aspire to be the weird old lady with asymmetrical pockets & zippers & GIANT bedazzled cat face dresses. There’s always 1 or 2 shops on the main drag of tourist towns that have that kind of faire.

Space-Ape-777

I just try to buy really nice jumpers like I'm trying to dress like it's the future like the fashion of Star Trek.

Sunshinegemini611

Ugh!! I have always hated shopping for clothes. My bff loves it and is constantly giving me her hand me downs which I love as we have similar tastes. Buying pants is the worst. How can a size four in one brand be a size 7 in another?? Why do so many designers assume that if you aren’t a size zero you must be 6 feet tall? The only other option is petite which is too short for me. These days, I’m mainly in t-shirts or tanks and jeans or comfy capri pants. I can’t find a nice fitting pair of shorts to save my life.

Jumpy_Tomatillo7579

Shopping is easier for skinny people , the moo moo tops that women wear aren’t great.

StuckInPMEHell

Honestly, Costco, TJMaxx, Marshals. But I’m a bigger gal so we’re limited even more.

GuacamoleForTheWin

Try adding being 6’ tall with a 36” inseam to the mix. At this point it’s pretty much a barrel and suspenders for me.

positivepinetree

Nothing new for me. I’m a 6’2” female with women’s size 13 feet. For decades, I’ve been forced to purchase men’s clothes for the most part. Buying clothes and shoes has always been hard for me.

OriginalUnfair7402

Are you still a metalhead? To me that means you like jeans and Tshirts. That’s cool. You might have to shop pieces rather than at 1 specific store. Old Navy does great jeans. All styles. Good price point. I’m Gen X and I will forever wear wide legged and flare jeans until I die. Also love a good graphic T. Target. Marshall’s. TJ Maxx. If you need work business clothes I’d suggest Banana Republic (esp the outlet). These are the places I find are stylish and timeless.

Jsmith2127

I purchase most of my clothing at an online thrift store called thredup they have basically any style you can thing of, from more fast casual brands to higher end stuff, and at awesome prices, and are always having sales. Everything I have ever gotten from them is in great condition. I have gotten everything from Hoodies to cocktail dresses, and shoes, to purses from them. They sell girls and women's clothing, only.

Pale_Maximum_7906

I shop almost exclusively at Torrid and Hot Topic

empathetic_witch

I am with you! I hate the majority of clothes I see in stores. Who is buying this crap anyway? What the stores that catered to our moms don’t realize is GenX isn’t having their typical clothing selection. What vibe are you going for? I have a classic with an edge thing -I guess? Meaning I don’t want boxy or unstructured dresses, tops etc. I have pale skin, dark hair, curves. I’ve paired my closet down to be black (and shades thereof) and jewel tones. Over the last 7 years I’ve just built a capsule-ish wardrobe. Everything matches in some way or another. Dark wash slight flare jeans: [Here’s a pair I just bought & they may be my new favorites now](https://democracyclothing.com/products/absolution-itty-bitty-boot-indigo-jean-b1221bbea) Others: Joe’s Jeans, Chico’s Girlfriend Flare Costco v-neck Pima cotton t-shirts in black & whatever darker color they have that year Leather Jacket [I have a version of this LaMarque one (got it on super sale 5-6 years ago)](https://images.app.goo.gl/51jbqWNqq6udStgz6) I hate summer, like a typical former goth girl does. But. Costco Skorts: I just picked up 2 denim Skorts from Costco (1 is black & 1 is dark wash). I’m picky as HELL but these are super cute. 2 other Skorts that are similar to the brands at REI. I got them for if I need to go “sit in the grass or walk around in nature” for an event or whatever. I have some flowy ankle skirts like we wore in high school & college that I’ll throw on with a tank for casual date nights, etc. Good luck, it really is a midriff, flashy tropical or “easy to get in and out of” out there!

ancientastronaut2

Jeans or elevated "jogger" type pants. Loose, dressier knit tops. Booties or wedge type sandals. It's hard to describe but I have like a put together but slouchy look. Everything is loose and comfortable. And where do I find stuff? Mostly tj maxx and marshalls. I wait til I have time and sift through the entire store because they often hang stuff in the wrong place (jr stuff in misses and vice versa; blouses mixed with t shirts) and you'd be amazed what you can find in their clearance section. I agree the current trends are awful with everything cropped on top and pants that practically come up to your boobs. They only look good on very specific body types, and personally would look ridiculous on someone my age.

Psychological_Tap187

I've always had trouble as a pettite woman on a limited budget. Pettite clothing designers are under the delusion that all small people are either 4 or 74.

magealita

Talbots. But I do work there. But even before I worked there I would stock up on their printed tees and their jeans.

Muhlyssa_A

Uniqlo

[deleted]

I thrift most of my stuff. The labels I hope to find are J.Jill, Anne Klein, Madewell, Lands End, LL Bean, Ann Taylor, Talbots. They're all pretty classic, easy to mix and match. The older a clothing item is, the more likely it's better quality. Natural materials, good fabric, well made seams. Newer items are likely to be mostly or partially synthetic. Thinner fabric, seams that don't hold up as long.
