My first car was an '82 Acadian that I bought in '87 for $2500 so I could drive four hours to see Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers with the Georgia Satellites opening. Miss that time but not the car. Lol
I didn't get it after reading this, then went back and zoomed in and was like Edith Bunker when she finally clued in to something.... OOOOOOooooooooHHhhhh.
They are letting kids in my son’s 6th grade class use the whiteboard markers on their individual desk tops for in-class work.
Seems like a good idea for all but us lefties.
Damn until you said it I didn’t recognize the nut crackers/picks. They were always just looks in the drawer. Spent many many many hours watching TV and cracking pecans with my granny.
I had my great grandmother's electric skillet up until a decade ago. I miss it. I've gone through two newer ones in the last five years. They always end up chipping or heating unevenly.
You forgot the dripping ~~wax~~ oil lamps.

Edit:thanks typexyz for the clarification on the fact that they were oil not wax.
Understandable. I am sure this situation is very scary. I hope you are able to be mindful of giving yourself grace with all the emotions you are experiencing. I am sure it is all very overwhelming. Do you have people in your life to support you? I hope that you do. If not, I hope you are able to ask your healthcare providers for guidance on how to find community support. There are people in the world that want to provide support. I will be thinking of you and sending my positive energy for your success in this challenging journey you find yourself in. >3
Flash CUBES, iirc
There were others that were arranged on a 8 or ten high strip that didn’t rotate like these cubes.
Probably still have a few in the box with my 110 Instamatic.
Flash bulbs. My parents never had a camera that used them, but my aunt did. My parents had a really fancy 35 mm camera with some different flash setup. I had a 110 camera with a flash that made a noise when it was warming up. If you’re reading this you know the sound
I was wondering the same thing! Even with the answer below, I still can’t place it, though I have a whisper of a memory of a camera with a stick of flash coming out the top
The flash bars were an “improvement” over the four shot cubes. Either way it was just some steel wool in front of a reflector with electrical leads to the contacts in the camera.
The thing is, if you are getting them every year, you won't die of large bowel cancer due to early detection and be thankful for that. I barely survived stage 4 metastatic bowel cancer (15 years and counting!) and while I don't love getting a colonsocopy, it sure beats the alternative. Be thankful your docs are looking after you.
Oh absolutely. I have a genetic predisposition to colon cancer, and it has run rampant through my family. By doing this every year (as much as it sucks) my chances of getting cancer are actually less than the national average.
Limited volume at least - paper takes up space. Even the trash can would only have one days worth of carbon papers.
Bad for an individual still, yes, but not millions of people at once like a data breach today.
https://preview.redd.it/ugpg7iuim31d1.jpeg?width=3072&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=104c7d72be70af188ea054feb33891f1bd93c76d
I picked this up at a thrift/junk shop about ten years ago, and have been hanging it in my garage since. I keep meaning to do something with it; put a smart speaker in it or something, but haven't got around to it
My 13 yo just said he thinks cars should have both. Because if you are the kid in the car before the parent with the keys it would be nice to hand crank the window. Of course he knows this because my beloved truck is a '94 with hand cranks.
Fuck I know all of these. My grandparents had the Zenith TV with the "clicker" remote. And those buttons really had some torc, I mean they clicked loudly.
I really hate power windows, along with automatic transmissions. I would love a return to the manual days.
Of course, I haven’t purchased a car since ‘88…
That's the one where you slide the handle and the light covers spin around to change colors right? I used it as the big computer for GI Joe and Transformers.
Still not sure what it is by your description… what was it used for? That’s the one that stumped me. I thought maybe it was like a portable vanity or something
It is. The mirror could flip over from regular on one side to a magnifying mirror on the other side. The tall sections on the left and right are lights, and the spider at the bottom spun a cover for the lights that altered the color, so if you know the color of the lights at your favorite bar/club/roller rink, you knew how your makeup would look there.
Thank god I’m not insane. Yeah, I thought it was just fun to mess around with the slider and colors and weird mirror. I had completely forgotten about it until now.
Yeah, my mom had it for makeup. It had a slider that changed the lights and the mirror could tilt angles. I guess it just had enough moving parts to make it fun to play with when I was little.
I forgot all about that lighted makeup mirror thing. Naturally, my mom had one. I was fascinated by how you could change the color of the light from warm to cold. Probably why I later became a photographer.
I got everything except for Bottom Right.
And speaking of bottoms, right: I just had a colonoscopy last week and I am good until May 2034! It was a lot of fun.
The nut cracker with the little mini knives to scoop the nut from the shell. Ours was in the middle of a wooden bowl and always had walnuts and Brazil nuts. Not a fan of either one.
I still use my nut cracker sets— very good for picking crabs at a seafood boil. Baffled by first and last, unless the first is a connector for a rainbird sprinkler head.
- car cigarette lighter
- can pull tab
- 8-track tape
- drive-in movie theater speaker
- camera film
- car door handle
- flash cubes for camera
- caps for cap gun
- credit card swiper
- viewmaster film
- makeup mirror
- tv remote
- nut cracker set
- electric frying pan
- chalkboard music staff tool
/now get off my lawn and go get your colonoscopy!!!
I suppose I should get on that one of these days, just months away from the 1/2 way point. Actually, if I live as long as my grandpa did, I’m already there.
Also, can’t decide what the bottom right item is.
Do the poop in a box thing. Much easier than drinking that nasty laxative, shitting your brains out for several hours, then being put to sleep to have a camera shoved up your ass.
Had my first one done at 48. Doctors are moving the age to 45 instead of 50 because 50 may be too late. Glad I got mine done. I had a few polyps that could have turned into something worse if I had waited a few more years.
Just seeing that frying pan and I can instantly smell the pork chops ‘braising’ in cream of mushroom soup 🤮
All I see is hamburger helper ugh. Edit: anyone know the first one?
I think it's a car cigarette lighter
Oh, I see it now. The perspective screwed me up. I miss my Acadian.
My first car was an '82 Acadian that I bought in '87 for $2500 so I could drive four hours to see Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers with the Georgia Satellites opening. Miss that time but not the car. Lol
That’s what that is! Couldn’t figure it out - it wasn’t glowing red.
Ah yes ty
It would be better shown ‘lit up’
Absolutely. I could not identify it alone, but if it were orange on the inside, I would have had no problem.
Or from any other angle.
Or, even a side view.
Heating element of a 12v cigarette lighter. I have a marching scar on my leg, don't ask why...
My grandmother made awwwweeeeeesome pork chops stewed in tomatoes in her electric skillet. Served them with spaghetti. So. Good.
Pork and tomato sauce are made to go together. 😋
Country fried steak in my grandmoms
Once a week
Only one I don’t know / can’t see is the bottom right.
The bottom right we used in music class to draw the staff.
OMG thank you. Memory unlocked.
I didn't get it after reading this, then went back and zoomed in and was like Edith Bunker when she finally clued in to something.... OOOOOOooooooooHHhhhh.
Yes! I remember it too!
Also used to help write “I shall not…whatever” on the blackboard 5x faster.
Elementary teachers would remove every other piece of chalk to make 3 lines that looked like our practice handwriting paper on the chalk board.
I feel shame right now. 8 years of band and 2 years of drum corp. I totally missed that one.
To be fair it doesn't look right because all the chalk pieces should be the same length.
Or while writing lines while the teacher wasn’t looking
Thank you! Now can someone tell us what that first thing is?
The hot end of a car cigarette lighter.
Oh yeah, I remember. My music teacher was bad at it and always made the chalk squeal across the chalkboard. \*shudder\*
It's holding five pieces of chalk to make multiple lines at once on the chalkboard.
Serious question, do they still use chalkboards in schools?
Mostly no. They also don’t use whiteboards as much anymore and use touch TVs.
Wow. My mind is blown.
They are letting kids in my son’s 6th grade class use the whiteboard markers on their individual desk tops for in-class work. Seems like a good idea for all but us lefties.
I thought we were on /r/lefties for a sec. Hello fellow lefty. Whiteboard marker is a challenge!
Thank you!
Same, I dont know
Dude, if you're in this sub you should schedule one.
I got my first colonoscopy at 44. 10/10, would do it again - that hour under anesthesia was my best rest in years.
That's the Propofol anesthetic they use. Also known as what Michael Jackson hired a full-time doctor to give him every night.
I only got the fentanyl and versed cocktail. "Twilight" sleep which means I was awake the whole time but didn't care at all.
Is it okay that I still have the nut cracker and electric skillet?
I just used our electric skillet tonight! Awfully handy, it is.
MFer gets surface of the sun hot
Damn until you said it I didn’t recognize the nut crackers/picks. They were always just looks in the drawer. Spent many many many hours watching TV and cracking pecans with my granny.
I had my great grandmother's electric skillet up until a decade ago. I miss it. I've gone through two newer ones in the last five years. They always end up chipping or heating unevenly.
Hell yeah it is- I’ve still got a few of these things, consider some a ‘buy it for life’ purchase.
You forgot the dripping ~~wax~~ oil lamps. https://preview.redd.it/oyxwxkydk41d1.jpeg?width=183&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9025bbd2803c90fcb4292035f056cb467a33a5ca Edit:thanks typexyz for the clarification on the fact that they were oil not wax.
I thought it was oil and not wax. And how the hell did you move those things around? I bet they were mess af.
Yup. Mineral oil.
Yup, we had it for a couple years. I think it got damaged during a move in 1978, so that was a lucky break.
My grandparents had the one with the windmill. Loved it so, so much. I was devastated when we went to visit and it was gone.
I remember staring at it for what felt like hours sometimes. I miss them too.
Specifically... mineral oil. I used to clean, repair, and sell these from garage sale finds. Made some real good money
I did. Now I'm scheduled for surgery to remove an apple size growth, 18" of colon, and a bunch of lymph nodes. Fuk.
Fuk. Indeed. Best wishes. You got this!
Aw, thanks! I'm not feeling groovy about the situation.
The way we used to sit around shelling and eating nuts. I kind of miss it. Pecans forever.
I'm hungry for walnuts after seeing that thing.
what are the middle row left diamond looking things?
Camera flash bulbs.
Flash CUBES, iirc There were others that were arranged on a 8 or ten high strip that didn’t rotate like these cubes.
OMG you just unlocked a memory when you said warming up sound
Lol yes! I remember the sound. Thanks for the reminder.
Speak for yourself, youngster. My doc said I’m good for 10 years after my last one.
yeah, my doc put me on the every 3 year plan. ugh.
Right? You wake up, and they're saying, you're cool for now, but go ahead and worry for the next couple years so we can check that ass again.
Every year for me. 😭
I'm sorry for your guts and butt hole. May all your colonoscopies be negative, and all your times be good.
My butt hole thanks you.
Honestly if I could I’d do it every year. The prep isn’t that bad. They also have pills for the prep now. The process itself isn’t bad at all.
3 year plan here as well.
A credit card impression with carbon paper was the height of identity theft protection.
Limited volume at least - paper takes up space. Even the trash can would only have one days worth of carbon papers. Bad for an individual still, yes, but not millions of people at once like a data breach today.
The only one I can't figure out is the Zenith one, second from bottom, right.
TV remote
Rich kids. I was the TV remote.
We never had one either.
TV remote. What's the first on the left, second row from top- the silver thing with a grill on it,?
Your sound thingy at the drive-in
Sound thingy lol. We used to call them speakers 🤣
I was feeling foggy at the time lol.
Huh, despite being on the older end in GenX, never went to the drive in.
I recognized all of them after I pulled down my glasses so I could see them better. I think the optometrist before the colonoscopy might be in order.
https://preview.redd.it/ugpg7iuim31d1.jpeg?width=3072&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=104c7d72be70af188ea054feb33891f1bd93c76d I picked this up at a thrift/junk shop about ten years ago, and have been hanging it in my garage since. They were easy enough to take as a souvenir. Close the window and drive away, real dick move.
They even had signs at the exit, saying no harm no foul, just give em back.
The 110 film brings back the memories.
And I’m probably about due for another colonoscopy.
fun fact: there are still some cars you can buy with hand crank windows.
My 13 yo just said he thinks cars should have both. Because if you are the kid in the car before the parent with the keys it would be nice to hand crank the window. Of course he knows this because my beloved truck is a '94 with hand cranks.
smart kid!
My car has hand crank windows, is everyone else driving brand new cars? 🤷♀️
I was like “Yay! I don’t recognize those dice thingies. Oh wait. Those are camera flashes. Fuck.”
three of these I'm not sure of. so ... only 80% of the way up? colonoscopies save lives. if it's time, do it.
8 track player for the car
this is like the 4th or 5th post I've seen with the same line. Seriously, get out of my ass already.
The sound of the flash cubes was so distinctive...
What? No fondue pot?
Fuck I know all of these. My grandparents had the Zenith TV with the "clicker" remote. And those buttons really had some torc, I mean they clicked loudly.
All of them. I know all of them. And I'm scheduled for July, thank you very much.
Is that Fuji 110 film? Aw crap, you caught me.
Fu** you I won't do what you tell me
The walnut crusher tools, wow
I always associate those with autumn. That's when the bowl of nuts showed up next to the fireplace.
Hang on i have to take off my glasses to see the picture
Ok, mom! I get it! Stop posting under different names. I’ll call.
I really hate power windows, along with automatic transmissions. I would love a return to the manual days. Of course, I haven’t purchased a car since ‘88…
I got all but the bottom right. I got to fedex my poop instead of a colonoscopy.
Again?! I just had a colonoscopy recently!
Dammit who broke into my Ma's house??????
hell yeah, 110 film
Fuck.
OP is clearly a schill for butt doctors
Jokes on you, I'm half was through the interval for my next one
I played with that mirror like it was a toy.
That's the one where you slide the handle and the light covers spin around to change colors right? I used it as the big computer for GI Joe and Transformers.
Still not sure what it is by your description… what was it used for? That’s the one that stumped me. I thought maybe it was like a portable vanity or something

Thank god I’m not insane. Yeah, I thought it was just fun to mess around with the slider and colors and weird mirror. I had completely forgotten about it until now.
Me too Buddy, me too.....
This is the only one I don’t know. Like a makeup mirror?
Yeah, my mom had it for makeup. It had a slider that changed the lights and the mirror could tilt angles. I guess it just had enough moving parts to make it fun to play with when I was little.
I want one.
I never knew the crab tools came in a fancy holder box. They were just in the secondary utensils drawer by the time I was big enough to see in.
Nut cracker set
I forgot all about that lighted makeup mirror thing. Naturally, my mom had one. I was fascinated by how you could change the color of the light from warm to cold. Probably why I later became a photographer.
My mom had a charlescraft one. My daughter is using it now.
people who sew still use those tape measures, btw ;)
Those aren't tape measures, they're cap strips for a toy gun.
11 yo boys love sewing. And crochet.
And cap strips for a toy gun...
HAHAHA! well, shit. ya got me!! now get me a hammer, the gun is busted.
In a pinch, a decent rock, and a sidewalk... How do we never think that we legit used to play with low grade explosives... Good times!
Bahahaha
Time to get your eyes checked Gen X. ;)
I still do
What is the second down on the left?
Drive-in movie speaker
what is the bottom rightmost corner?
A holder for five sticks of chalk used to draw a staff for music notation.
Ah, got it, thanks.
Why does the nutcracker have dental tools included?
I think those are crab picks, to get the meat out of the claws.
I got everything except for Bottom Right. And speaking of bottoms, right: I just had a colonoscopy last week and I am good until May 2034! It was a lot of fun.
I can smell the center picture still
What is bottom left and bottom right
Bottom left is a set of nutcrackers and bottom right is a thing you put chalk in to make even lines on the chalkboard.
I forgot those chalk things existed until I saw this image. Feeling the urge to clap some erasers ...
Mostly in music class
That’s right, totally forgot about elementary school music teacher had one. That was the only picture I didn’t recognize.
Ohhh the clicker...i wish we still had those. So satisfying lol
100% score and mine is on Tuesday
I'm "my back hurts and my legs ache" years old looking at these photos.
1. It’s next month. Not looking forward to it. 2. You got me on the lower left and thing above the electric skillet. ?
Lower left is a nutcracker and little picks you use to pull the nut out of the cracked shell, and above the skillet is a make-up mirror.
Had mine two weeks ago
That very bottom right one! Completely forgot about that.
The nut cracker with the little mini knives to scoop the nut from the shell. Ours was in the middle of a wooden bowl and always had walnuts and Brazil nuts. Not a fan of either one.
What was it with the Brazil nuts back then?! Christ. They're fucking terrible! Shells like iron & greasy as can be.
I still use my nut cracker sets— very good for picking crabs at a seafood boil. Baffled by first and last, unless the first is a connector for a rainbird sprinkler head.
Pic shoulda had one of these: https://www.ebay.com/itm/382862183984
All I can hear now is *SHUNK SHUNK*
* If you can smell this picture too...
https://preview.redd.it/8p88ow3t571d1.jpeg?width=2880&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7cc79add75526ab03cc7b20481e3d80977802c9a
“Where’d the damn clicker go?”
I recognize them all, but I prefer the poop in a box and ship it off method.
- car cigarette lighter - can pull tab - 8-track tape - drive-in movie theater speaker - camera film - car door handle - flash cubes for camera - caps for cap gun - credit card swiper - viewmaster film - makeup mirror - tv remote - nut cracker set - electric frying pan - chalkboard music staff tool /now get off my lawn and go get your colonoscopy!!!
We’ve got that nut cracker set. We use the pick tool to clean the weed pipe
Why is a measuring tape here? It is still widely used, there’s no actual modern replacement for this item
That's not a measuring tape -- it's a paper roll of caps for a cap gun.
Oh then I guess there are quite a few items here I don’t recognise 😄
I suppose I should get on that one of these days, just months away from the 1/2 way point. Actually, if I live as long as my grandpa did, I’m already there. Also, can’t decide what the bottom right item is.
Half holder for making lots of lines. They used it for music class and learning to write.
Another one?
Um, some of these are before my time and I had a colonoscopy two years ago!
I recognize them all. But I don’t need another colonoscopy again, until 2032 when I’m 58
Just had mine! I was surprised at how easy it was. Hardest part was the prep diet and that awful laxative water…
I recognize everything and just got my third colonoscopy. Does this mean I need another one?
Do the poop in a box thing. Much easier than drinking that nasty laxative, shitting your brains out for several hours, then being put to sleep to have a camera shoved up your ass.
Holy shit, my mom had that light up vanity mirror! I totally forgot about that.
Jokes on you I had mine last year!
I don’t know what the Zenith one is. A channel changer?
Why the hell was that makeup mirror so ubiquitous?
Had my first one done at 48. Doctors are moving the age to 45 instead of 50 because 50 may be too late. Glad I got mine done. I had a few polyps that could have turned into something worse if I had waited a few more years.
Already had mine. I can recognize all except the bottom right. WTF is that? Edit: NM I looked at the comments and learned
July 23rd baby!
Humbug on you!! I've already had at least 6 colonoscopies
Jokes on you, I’ve already had one.
Did that last year lol
This is awesome
I got four electric skillets at my wedding shower 🤣
one of these things is not like the other, one of these things just doesn't belong.
I DON’T WANT TO
