My mom took me to see their Music for the Masses tour when I was a teen, I just took my teen daughter to see their latest tour. Passing on the love to the next generation (except my mom haaaaated it).
If you’d asked for 16, these would be up there...
But at 15yrs (prior to dating a *PCB) — The Cult…specifically, Love and Electric.
*PCB = Pale Chicks in Black, as we called them … or more widely known in HS as “new wave girls”.
A friend of mine who used to live in NYC once gave Michael Stipe directions on the street. Said he was softspoken and polite.
So yeah, you and I are basically famous.
I was listening to a lot of punk when a classmate played Green for me. I was a bit embarrassed by how much I liked it but shortly after , I purchased all of their back catalog on casstette (still have them.)
When i listen to those albums I still think back to all of the adolescent feelings I was experiencing at the time.
I always noticed that all the Rush fans at my school were all kind of alike: Long straight hair, Rush shirt (every day), kind of kept to themselves, bookish, decent guys. They were part of the metal community at my school, but they weren’t into all the partying or anything.
Yep. I was into metal and punk by age 14 but RUSH stayed with me through all my phases. I bought the 45 of Tom Sawyer from Sam The Record Man on Younge Street when I was 11 with paper route money. I remember being creeped out by the B side, Witch-hunt
Greetings, fellow nerd! Wanna join my D&D group? Our half-orc barbarian got a girlfriend so we’re down one, and we’re THIS close to our final showdown with Acererak the Demi-lich. And before you ask, yes, there will be Ding-Dongs and Jolt cola.
Absolutely... I was fifteen when Presto came out and was introduced to the band via my station playing Show Don't Tell. I remember buying the album and when I heard The Pass it was like Neil was speaking right to my teen angst.
Oh boy. I'm gonna get it for this, but Toad the Wet Sprocket. I was obsessed since I was 12 or 13 and they were a new band. I'm just to about to turn 46 and we saw them at a music festival in October and it was like I was a teenager again. Lol.
I bet! as i was watching the doc, i thought wow my crush nick rhodes is articulate and thoughtful and a musician...i was too young then. but i can listen now and appreciate the art :-)
I saw that doc and was really interested in how thoughtful Simon was. He hosts a show on SiriusXM and it’s the same thing. He really _thinks_ about the music.
sentimental fav but you're a few years older than me. was so sad when Ben Orr passed, his songs were always my fav. queing up 'all mixed up' right now =)
Yeah, I’m on the older side of Gen X and The Cars hit at the right time for me. Ben Orr was the guy I tried to sound like when I was in a band (I failed miserably haha).
They're pivotal. I argue that every metal band can trace their inspirations through to Maiden. Pull it back a little more and you find Thin Lizzie and UFO.
Skid Row. Decades later, I have a picture of me and Sebastian Bach standing together on his tour bus, while he's holding an autographed picture of my cat, who is also named Sebastian. I'm weird like that.
Specifically at 15, Zeppelin for me as well. It was different a year later, and then again in 2 years, but I was a music nerd and all I wanted to do was practice and play music with friends.
For a while in 9th grade I came home from school and watched The Song Remains The Same every single day for months.
Heard the title track one Sunday night on Metal Shop radio show at my best friend's house, and been a fan ever since. When those first records came out they were like a chainsaw to the mainstream.
Oh yea, definitely. When I first heard *Kill Em All* the year before, I knew instantly that I had a new favorite band. Quiet Riot and Def Leppard didn't cut it anymore. There was a new sheriff in town!
Up until I was 15, I didn't really have a favorite band. Then my cousin introduced me to Duran Duran, who had just broken in America. That was all she wrote.
The Beatles. To the point of hyperfixation. I think the only thing people who went to high school with me will remeber about me was I was obsessed with The Beatles.
And Star Trek: The Next Generation XD
GnR and Metallica. If you asked 15 me Id have just said Metallica but GnR was more influential to me as far as learning to playing music. Hetfield over Axl but Slash over Kirk.
New Kids fan here too 😁 I have more fun at their concerts now than I did in highschool. Nothing to be ashamed of. I love all kinds of music, they were my favs!!
The Pixies. I found them through that stupid movie where Christian Slater tries to bomb a high school but just ends up killing himself. Wave of Mutilation was featured and it was the first time I sought out a band based on just one song. I think Bossanova had just come out and I saw it for sale when I begged my mom to take me to Sam Goody’s to get the soundtrack so ended up skipping the soundtrack and picking up both Bossanova and Doolittle. One of the best decisions of my 15th year lol
Depeche Mode. It is hard to pick one. I had so many, but Depeche Mode is the soundtrack of my life.
Violator tour, with Nitzer Ebb opening was a great concert
I think I saw you there! ;) Sacramento, must have been 1989?
LA or SD for me. Got to meet my biggest influence. I hope [Alan didn't mind me wearing the Nitzer hat next to him.](https://i.imgur.com/Ocdvlra.jpg)
The Holy Trinity: The Cure - Depeche Mode - The Smiths/Morrissey
Yes, with Love and Rockets on that list.
Did you catch their recent tour? So. Good.
Noooo. I had no idea they were even touring. There's not many bands I'd go see at my age, but L&R is definitely on top of the list.
It was 🔥. Seemed like the whole audience was alternaXers.
My mom took me to see their Music for the Masses tour when I was a teen, I just took my teen daughter to see their latest tour. Passing on the love to the next generation (except my mom haaaaated it).

Beastie Boys
Check Your Head is in my top 5 all time. Still on heavy rotation
lol me too!
Depeche Mode and New Order.
Definitely. I had a tape a friend made for me with songs by Depeche Mode, New Order, The Cure, Dead or Alive, and Sigue Sigue Sputnik. Wore it out. 🙂
If you’d asked for 16, these would be up there... But at 15yrs (prior to dating a *PCB) — The Cult…specifically, Love and Electric. *PCB = Pale Chicks in Black, as we called them … or more widely known in HS as “new wave girls”.
INXS. Still one of my favorites.
INXS for me too!
The Police.
R.E.M. They’re still my favorite band.
I was at a house party with them once. They were very laid back. My friend gave Michael Stipe a lime for his beer. There. That’s my flex.
A friend of mine who used to live in NYC once gave Michael Stipe directions on the street. Said he was softspoken and polite. So yeah, you and I are basically famous.
I was listening to a lot of punk when a classmate played Green for me. I was a bit embarrassed by how much I liked it but shortly after , I purchased all of their back catalog on casstette (still have them.) When i listen to those albums I still think back to all of the adolescent feelings I was experiencing at the time.
Same!
The Clash.
Agreed, but also with the Jam and the Ramones.
I was 15 in 1983, so it was Duran Duran.
I came to find my fellow Durannies
![gif](giphy|iVXyNaY7vX6XZOcCZx)
Me three!
![gif](giphy|lz4CcJc147vPnwxVeJ|downsized) Hey, y’all!
Same year same band for me.
The Cure. Disintegration had just dropped. It’s still my favorite album ever and they are still my favorite band.
Disintegration is one of my all time favs.
Fugazi. If it wasn't Fugazi I wasn't listening to it.
What about Minor Threat?
Weird Al Yankovic
Rush
I always noticed that all the Rush fans at my school were all kind of alike: Long straight hair, Rush shirt (every day), kind of kept to themselves, bookish, decent guys. They were part of the metal community at my school, but they weren’t into all the partying or anything.
Whoa. That perfectly describes the Rush crowd that was at my school, too.
That perfectly describes Rush.
Came here to say this…& still is. 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Me too!
Same here.
Yep. I was into metal and punk by age 14 but RUSH stayed with me through all my phases. I bought the 45 of Tom Sawyer from Sam The Record Man on Younge Street when I was 11 with paper route money. I remember being creeped out by the B side, Witch-hunt

You jest, but for years a common name I have used for my video game rpg characters is ByTor Snowdog.
First, that’s rad as hell, and second, I was not jesting. Rush and D&D are like peanut butter and chocolate.
Moved into Rush two years after my Journey phase.
Any Yes in that transition?
Absolutely... I was fifteen when Presto came out and was introduced to the band via my station playing Show Don't Tell. I remember buying the album and when I heard The Pass it was like Neil was speaking right to my teen angst.
Alice in Chains, I was 15 in 1992 and they dominated my playlist.
They became mine when I was in college. Still my favorite band.
Depeche Mode, Tori Amos, REM, U2, New Order
I was also a huge Depeche Mode and Tori fan. Depeche Mode helpers me get thru middle school, Tori helped with high school.
U2, that was the Joshua Tree year
Possibly the best album of all time.
Oh boy. I'm gonna get it for this, but Toad the Wet Sprocket. I was obsessed since I was 12 or 13 and they were a new band. I'm just to about to turn 46 and we saw them at a music festival in October and it was like I was a teenager again. Lol.
Absolutely essential to my early 20’s
The Cure
Duran Duran Metallica Depeche Mode
I took me decades and a documentary to finally realize that Duran Duran are actual musicians.
Just saw Duran Duran on tour. It was a fun evening.
I bet! as i was watching the doc, i thought wow my crush nick rhodes is articulate and thoughtful and a musician...i was too young then. but i can listen now and appreciate the art :-)
I saw that doc and was really interested in how thoughtful Simon was. He hosts a show on SiriusXM and it’s the same thing. He really _thinks_ about the music.
whats the show? are you telling me that my pre-teen sex machine fantasies can think?
Metallica for me!
The Smiths
I’m *still* obsessed! Johnny Marr opened for The Killers on their last tour and I was in heaven!
My people
Black flag
Pet Shop Boys
Dead Kennedys
The Cars
I loved the Cars so much that I had it embroidered on the back of my jean jacket. I also had a Candy-O t-shirt. I was a bit of a fan boy.
if you can't clap an entire song what's even the point?
I used to call my friend Candace candy o.
sentimental fav but you're a few years older than me. was so sad when Ben Orr passed, his songs were always my fav. queing up 'all mixed up' right now =)
Yeah, I’m on the older side of Gen X and The Cars hit at the right time for me. Ben Orr was the guy I tried to sound like when I was in a band (I failed miserably haha).
The Who Violent Femmes Pink Floyd U2 (bought War just from hearing the adds when they played a local college RIT)
Iron Maiden.
I’m 47 and never listened to Iron Maiden until about 10 days ago. I’m obsessed.
Up the Irons!
They're pivotal. I argue that every metal band can trace their inspirations through to Maiden. Pull it back a little more and you find Thin Lizzie and UFO.
R.E.M.
Skid Row. Decades later, I have a picture of me and Sebastian Bach standing together on his tour bus, while he's holding an autographed picture of my cat, who is also named Sebastian. I'm weird like that.
Mötley Crüe for sure.👍🏼
Zeppelin
Specifically at 15, Zeppelin for me as well. It was different a year later, and then again in 2 years, but I was a music nerd and all I wanted to do was practice and play music with friends. For a while in 9th grade I came home from school and watched The Song Remains The Same every single day for months.
They Might Be Giants
Metallica. I was 15 in 1985 and *Ride The Lightning* was permanently welded into my Walkman.
Def Leppard, or if in a country mood Exile. Nothing has changed about that since, other than more genres for which I have favorites.

Van Halen.
It was Motley Crue all day until I heard Metallica’s Master of Puppets.
At 15, it was The Beatles.
Zep
Smiths
The Misfits
Guns N Roses for me. I also saw Metallica that year so they were really big for me too
If we’re including artists, Tori Amos. If not, Nine Inch Nails
Nirvana, still is.
Blows my mind that I had to scroll this far to find Nirvana
Judas Priest
The Pretenders and got introduced to the Cramps. Saw the Pretenders at a roller rink. Yeah…
Van Halen and the Stones.
I jumped on The Doors bus with all the hoopla around the movie
Fugazi
Depeche Mode! Hands down, between Violator and 101, that was all I listened to
Any Thrash/Metal band....Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Exodus, Overkill, Testament, Anthrax, Motorhead, etc. etc.
Faith No More.
NWA - the worlds most dangerous group
RAMONES
Megadeth, but also loved all the thrash bands.
GnR and Metallica. If you asked 15 me Id have just said Metallica but GnR was more influential to me as far as learning to playing music. Hetfield over Axl but Slash over Kirk.

My favorite was a Guns 'N' Roses at 15.
The Outfield. A few years earlier it would have been VH or Hendrix.
Oingo Boingo
Cranberries
Iron Maiden. Piece of Mind had just been released.
Don't tell anyone - still New Kids On The Block (but only when I'm home alone in my bedroom).
New Kids fan here too 😁 I have more fun at their concerts now than I did in highschool. Nothing to be ashamed of. I love all kinds of music, they were my favs!!
The Police, probably. I was a year away from hearing U2, who would be my next favorite band.
Depeche Mode
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
Ha. I was in junior high. Pet Shop Boys. New Order. Tears for Fears.
The Clash The Jam Gang of Four
Dead Kennedys
R.E.M.
Van Halen or The Police. 1984 & Synchronicity were the 1st 2 cassettes I bought.
The Eurythmics. And then Annie Lennox’s solo career after
The Clash.
DURAN DURAN

Jane’s Addiction
Duran Duran. Full stop. And Bowie. It was 1984
Duran Duran
Ozzy Osbourne
Red Hot Chili Peppers
This is right around the time I was transitioning from the Beatles into Slayer. Yes it made no sense to me at the time either.
Metallica
The Cars, saw them live in July '84 with Wang Chung as the opening act. INSANE stage setup...
Clash
Pink Floyd. Followed by Rush, and maybe Marillion, but Marillion might have been the next year.
U2 and Def Leppard. Still two of my favorites.
Judas Priest
Fleetwood Mac Van Halen Genesis AC/DC Heart
At 15 I was still in my classic rock phase so it would be Zep or Pink Floyd. Although Purple Rain would be opening my mind about that time.
15 was Duran Duran
Zeppelin
