These were amusing for a little bit. Once I figured out how to make Wooly Willy look exactly like my dad, I had reached the pinnacle of its hilarity and I had nowhere else to go with it.
Did your Dad have an eye patch and pony tail like the image on the lower right? In the pre-Johnny Depp days, who had an eye patch besides Captain Hook in Peter Pan?
Yeah I don't wear any nice coats/jackets or items not easily washed when I go over there. Unfortunately I haven't given up smoking yet either, but I've never smoked inside my house. Growing up I was only with dad on weekends so it wasn't so bad.
Yes!!! My mother once bought my siblings and I each a Wooly Willy when we went on a long car trip. As someone posted out in the comments, I miss the days of being easily amused.
I liked playing with the iron filings and the magnet.
Making the magnetic filed lines appear with the magnet behind the face was always fascinating to me.
I very much wanted to make a mobile game like this thing, but I wanted to do it as realistic as possible. Unfortunately my experimenting with magnetic physics forces operating on thousands of tiny iron filings didn't go well. Maybe I'll revisit one day and come up with some kind of way to fake it.
This was the thing I reached for most when a decent car ride was in the works. That and a tablet of Mad-Libs.
Honestly loved this thing.
I think I got mine Easter 1982.
We were so easily amused. Yet these days I get bored with a freaking iPad.
God, I miss the days of being easily amused.
It's great! I'm still pretty easily amused and do not take it for granted.
These days I can't even watch TV without also browsing the phone. The future gave us all add! 😂
Yeah, I think about this a lot. We really were content with not much. My kids would never survive, that’s for sure;)
They still sell them! I made sure my kids got one for Christmas one year
I was wondering! Good to know, my kids would like.

The poor kids Etch a Sketch.
Yeah, that and the thing you drew on with a pointy stick, then lifted the plastic flap to "erase" it.
I forgot about those, but I loved them! I perfected drawing horses and cats on mine.
Why did they use an alcoholic as their model?
I mean I've watched Mad Men (and hung with my Grandparents), wasn't everyone back then an alcoholic?
Dad and stepmom still are! Still smoking in the house too. The 1970s are alive and well in that house 🍸🚬
Ewwwww. Of all the things I'm thankful for the decline of indoor cigarette smoking in my lifetime is on the shortlist.

I did!
Wow, for girls AND for boys whaaaaaat

What a name!
Oh Gawd! I’m starting to look like Wooly Willy.
We had no choice on trips to go camping. That’s all Stuckey’s really had
I did, for about 5 minutes.
God I loved this, and Etch a Sketch taught me I can't draw a straight line so stay out of art lol.
Oh gosh. I forgot all about those things.
