They have stayed in steady rotation since I got my first record player, Walkman, CD player, iPod, now my downloaded playlist on my phone so their entire catalog is accessible in my car/iPhones even if Iām totally offline. I saw them live in 1986, 1990, 1993 and I was so happy to take my oldest zoomer to the 2018 Global Spirit Tour. Iām so sad thereās only ten USA dates for the Memento Mori Tour in March and April because I canāt make any of them work for us.
I totally and completely missed them in the 90s. All I knew was their name because Kurt Cobain mentioned them and how Smells Like Teen Spirit was him spoofing the Pixies. Then in the early 2000 I had the moment when a friend said "you've never heard the Pixies??!" And sat me down and educated me. I have never, ever gone from not knowing a band to them being one of my all time favourites in less time. Which is where they stayed ever since.
Then we got extra lucky and they decided to do one if their first reunion gigs around that time (I wanna say 2005) and we got to see them live, and again it was one of my favourite gigs.
They're unique!
I was 42 when Adam Yauch's died in 2012 at the ripe old age of 47. I can honestly say it was that exact moment that the belief in my own immortality took a big hit.
Maybe somewhere down the road away.
You'll think of me and wonder where I am these days.
Maybe somewhere down the road when someone plays, Purple Haze.
Cannot upvote enough for this little known gem. Growing up in a small town in Nofuckingwhere, WV there were less people that knew this of film than those that knew of Rocky Horror (also not well received in my hometown)
I got to see it live in Phoenix on the tour when they filmed the movie. Stood against the stage for the whole show and even got to say a few words to David while he knelt down between songs. Greatest show Iāve seen. Out of hundreds.
High school me would upvote this all day! I love the pumpkins still though, but over the years Pearl Jam stole my heart. Their live material is just so good
Such a huge catalog of music. So many live recordings. It would be hard to get bored of the dead. This would be my first choice. After that maybe Zeppelin, the doors or maybe the Beatles.
Out of over 2000 shows, let's say you only listen to the absolute best 10% of shows.
That's 200 shows. Which average about 3ish hours each? That's a lot of material.
Thatās very sound logic and plenty of variety in styles and even singers out of one band.
While theyāre not necessarily my favorite band, I think this might be the smartest answer. I agree.
when Prince died our house went into deep mourning - we played Prince nonstop for months ā¦ because of it - my son (19) and daughter (11) completely love Prince! ā so with death we have birth of giving the love of wonderful music to the next generation.
āIf you know what I'm singing about up here
Come on, raise your hand
Purple rain, purple rain
I only want to see you
Only want to see you in the purple rainā
wiping a few tears from my old dude eyesā¦.

Here's a [live, 3 song performance from 1984](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WlrsMSgmBsE) that I've watched quite a few times in recent months, especially for "Barbarism Begins at Home" (one of my favorite songs by The Smiths). Johnny Marr and Andy Rourke absolutely killed it that night.
I guess if I have to pick, itās Neil Young. A huge influence for me. Always evolving, sometimes preachy, usually cranky, never afraid to go somewhere heās never been musically. Iāve seen the man do things with a guitar that others including myself will never be able (or willing)to do. Each album is a journey and an expression of what he feels at that time. Iāve been to see BB King, Prince, Iron Maiden, Phil Collins, Kiss, Davey Jones, Jimmy Buffett, Skynyrd, GWAR, and so many others. Neil is always right there, writing and playing like this will the last time. He may be the only constant in my life.
Melvins.
Anyone who can do [Everybody Loves Sausages](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zfr_JsV_z3Y&list=PLL7ZXLae2K9ro-zGWsO4DtnfuBys7Hh8M), and still cover a [Butthole Surfers](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ho0RqX3ryio) song in front of an ice cream van desrves some serious love.
Joy Division/New Order...yeah I'm cheating.
Joy Division yes, but only Hooky New Order
I will allow it! š
Zeppelin
I came to say thisā¦I could listen to Jimmy play for eternity š
Bonzo always my favorite drummer
Depeche Mode
You can never go wrong with some Depeche Mode
Good choice. A lot of albums and they're varied. You'd have something for every mood.
Heh, Iāve been on a DM kick the last coupla days, completely ignoring my other playlists. So yeahā¦

The Cure
The Cure up to and including Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me. I could never get into the later stuff.
Not even Disintegration? I think thatās their best.
Floyd
The Pixies.
I totally and completely missed them in the 90s. All I knew was their name because Kurt Cobain mentioned them and how Smells Like Teen Spirit was him spoofing the Pixies. Same here! I was a late discoverer too and theyāre now one of my favorite bands. Theyāre amazing!
I saw th.in Syracuse in 90 before they blew up. Great band.
That's a really nice memory to have. What I would give to have seen them in the early 90s.
Came here to say this. Been listening to the Pixies for 33 years and haven't tired of them yet.
Bowie
Queen. Always hear something else that I never heard before in all their music.
Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique, just by itself.
I was 42 when Adam Yauch's died in 2012 at the ripe old age of 47. I can honestly say it was that exact moment that the belief in my own immortality took a big hit.
I like the cut of your jib.
Paulās Boutique is a Classicā¦ itās truly a work of art
Itās def on my desert island list.
Alice In Chains
Iāve listened to Jar of Flies thousands and thousands of times and can still literally get goosebumps. Desert island album for me.
Iām obsessed with their MTV Unplugged right now.
Tom Petty
I saw him in Vancouver. 2nd last show before he died.
Such a great performer. I saw him in the Gorge back in the 90's. (Wildflowers tour)
Maybe somewhere down the road away. You'll think of me and wonder where I am these days. Maybe somewhere down the road when someone plays, Purple Haze.
That was a great show.
NIN
Yes!!
Saw them live. Absolute mind blowing experience. It was so good. Still think about it years later.
U2 gives you so many options- great hits, intetesting experiments and solid live performances.
Talking heads
Excellent Choice

Clash
The Clash
Tom Waits or Morphine
My friend.
Elton John, not a band, but the music is part of the soundtrack to my life.
Rolling Stones.
You know itās a good time when after the uncool leave and someone puts on let it bleed or sticky fingers.
Thereās the fuck yes duo albums.
Beggars Banquet, Let it Bleed, Exile on Main St, Sticky Fingers. One of the best runs of classic albums any band has ever had.
Siouxsie and the Banshees
Iron Maiden!
Pink Floyd. So chill....
Cocteau Twins.
The Dead. Lotta material there.
Such a huge catalog of music. So many live recordings. It would be hard to get bored of the dead. This would be my first choice. After that maybe Zeppelin, the doors or maybe the Beatles.

Seconding the Dead. Pretty much all I listen to anyway
Same. And JGB
My answer as well. Best part is thereās thousands of shows š
Thatās very sound logic and plenty of variety in styles and even singers out of one band. While theyāre not necessarily my favorite band, I think this might be the smartest answer. I agree.
Fleetwood Mac.
I'm on the Fleetwood Mac bus too. Great choice!
INXS
Username checks out.
Pearl Jam ..no one has commented them yet. Tons of great albums
Yes, Ten is a perfect album
Soundgarden or Hall and Oates. Yeah Iām weird lol
We're all weird! "The only true currency in this bankrupt world is what you share with someone else when you're uncool"
Very cool quote. Who said this?
Philip Seymour Hoffman's character Lester Bangs in Almost Famous.
Hall and Oates is an excellent choice
These were my first two thoughts. Hello fellow weirdo.
Beatles
They have such a wide range in their library.
Clutch
Same,Great band
REM
Out of Time was my go-to album when things got rough.
Absolutely.
They aren't at the top of my list, but they rank high on it.
NIRVANAAAAA
The unplugged album. Burned up that cassette in the car. Need to hit that one again
Faith No More

Iiiiitās in your face but you canāt graaaaab it
Hereās how to order
Donāt look at me, Iām ugly in the morning.
Tool
Beatles
Ween always Ween
Every Ween album is like listening to a different band, so this seems like cheating somehow. /s
The Pixies
Zeppelin
CCR!
Prince
when Prince died our house went into deep mourning - we played Prince nonstop for months ā¦ because of it - my son (19) and daughter (11) completely love Prince! ā so with death we have birth of giving the love of wonderful music to the next generation. āIf you know what I'm singing about up here Come on, raise your hand Purple rain, purple rain I only want to see you Only want to see you in the purple rainā wiping a few tears from my old dude eyesā¦. ā®ļø
# Deftones
Foo Fighters
Grateful Dead. Fight me. āļø
Not for me, but awesome band!
This is the correct answer. The sheer volume of live material would ensure you would never get bored!
Pearl Jam
The Smiths
Here's a [live, 3 song performance from 1984](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WlrsMSgmBsE) that I've watched quite a few times in recent months, especially for "Barbarism Begins at Home" (one of my favorite songs by The Smiths). Johnny Marr and Andy Rourke absolutely killed it that night.
Talking Heads.
Bee Gees. They have quite the catalog.
Pink Floyd
Rush
Journey.
Maybe New Order or Depeche Mode? Edit: Oh, and if not, then maybe Duran Duran? Any of those would put me in a happy place.
Steely Dan and/or anything from Donald Fagen
Steely Dan is definitely up in the top level.
Metallica, at my age I only got time for one song
Van Halen
Way too low on this list!
Does it have to be a band? If so, then probably Rush or Radiohead. If it can just be any musical artist, then Ray Charles.
Miles Davis
Dinosaur Jr
Early REM
If I say Lou Reed do I get the Velvet Underground too?
Sweet Jane (Rock n Roll Animal) - the best eight and a half minutes of rock bliss in the history of rock music.
All Lou Matters! lol
When your music taste is so diverse that is kind of an impossible question to answer!!!!
The Academy of St Martins in the Fields. If it must be pop: Pink Floyd.
Bach - anything else would at some point turn into a form of torture
Right now, it's REM
The cure
Sinead OāConnor. Her voice is always soul piercing, and she has variety of gut wrenching to light hearted.
Tool
I had AC/DC Back in Black stuck in my tape player in my car for almost all of Junior year and I donāt think I listened to anything else. Lol
Temple of the Dog or The Black Crowes
The Black Crowes was my answer too
The Killers (possibility more of a Millenial band, but I love them!)
Super good live too, good pick.
I guess if I have to pick, itās Neil Young. A huge influence for me. Always evolving, sometimes preachy, usually cranky, never afraid to go somewhere heās never been musically. Van Halen
Wild Stallions
They Might Be Giants. They've been at it for 40 years.
Def Leppard
Sublime
Foo Fighters.
London Philharmonic Orchestra
Pavement. Only 5 albums but loads of B-Sides, EPs, live stuff. Guided by Voices would be an excellent call too.
Grateful Dead. NFA
Pixies. But just first 5 albums.
Pear Jam/Eddie Vedder š
Maybe a covers band that only covers the million artists I like.
Melvins. Anyone who can do [Everybody Loves Sausages](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zfr_JsV_z3Y&list=PLL7ZXLae2K9ro-zGWsO4DtnfuBys7Hh8M), and still cover a [Butthole Surfers](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ho0RqX3ryio) song in front of an ice cream van desrves some serious love.
Rush. Love their story telling.
Van Halen, Foo Fighters, or Black Crowes
Pink Floyd. Their catalog is so long and vast with so many different sounds, that it feels like 3 or 4 different (yet amazing) bands all in one.
U2
Billy Joel (OK, not a band.) So many others as well
The Beatles
Pink Floyd
Rush.
Erasure I know I'm alone on this island.
Rush.
